iFuRyu Sakura Kinomoto9.14/10    Readers' selection (2014-05-03)

Today we'll be reviewing one of the more anticipated prize figures in recent memory, FuRyu's Sakura Kinomoto.

About the character: Sakura Kinomoto is the title character from the much-beloved Card Captor Sakura anime. Sakura is a seemingly ordinary young girl who stumbles on an arcane book bearing the name "The Clow" in her father's library. The book contains a set of tarot cards, and when Sakura reads aloud the name of one of the cards (the Windy), the cards scatter to the wind. Keroberos, the guardian beast of the Clow, emerges and proclaims Sakura the card captor, tasking her with the retrieval of the Clow cards.

Packaging----------9/10

The front of the box has a large window, the show's logo, and a cute drawing of Kero-chan. It's too bad Kero didn't make it into the figure's design...

Both sides have the same drawing of Sakura. If you collected the US DVD release of CCS back in the day, you'll recognize this is the same illustration as was used for the cover of volume 1 of the DVD.

The back of the box has a shot of the figure over a cute drawing of Sakura.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971660.jpeg

Kero makes another appearance on the inside flap of the box.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971662.jpeg

The box is quite big, measuring 26 by 19 by 17 cm, and the figure itself is quite heavy, so shipping on this one could be kind of expensive. Overall, the design of the box is fine. I'm partial to boxes with artwork on them that can be displayed, so that aspect of the design is a big plus for me.

The reason the box is large is that other than attaching her base, Sakura is pretty much set up and ready to go.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971664.jpeg

Sakura attaches to the base via a peg in her foot and two small plastic rods. One supports her leg, and the other attaches to the bottom of her skirt. Those plastic pieces were wedged tightly inside the blister, so be careful when removing them, as I sent one of them careening across the room when I was trying to remove it!

Posing----------9.5/10

I really like her pose. Sakura is riding sidesaddle on her sealing wand, which of course grants her the ability to fly after she captures her first Clow Card.

Let's take a look at her.

Sculpting----------9/10*
Painting----------9/10*

*---These ratings take into account the fact that this is an inexpensive prize figure and represent ratings relative to other prize figures.

FuRyu exceeded my expectations in terms of Sakura's paint and sculpt. We'll see she does have a couple of issues, but generally the quality of her finish is much better than the run of the mill prize figure. I guess FuRyu realized they'd better do a good job with this figure or risk the wrath of Sakura fans...

One complaint I do have concerns Sakura's face. It seems to me to be just a little bit too wide. On the other hand, several key features of her character design are done very well, like her green eyes and her twin cowlicks.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971816.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971818.jpeg

The giant bow and ribbon on her hat is very cute. Sakura's best friend Tomoyo says that the world's only card captor cannot simply wear plain clothes, after all!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971820.jpeg

A little bit of brown paint made its way onto her hat. There's a rough patch in her hair, as well.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971856.jpeg

Is it my imagination, or does her nose look a little bit funny?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971858.jpeg

Some stray paint made its way on to the front of her outfit.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971860.jpeg

Sakura's outfit is replete with lots of ruffles, bows, and ribbons. I was afraid these things might end up as just big blobby messes, but the detail on the little bows on her outfit is actually quite good.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971862.jpeg

On mine, the stripe along the bottom of her skirt was a little sloppy in places.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971924.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971926.jpeg

Fans of CCS (or Clamp works in general) will recognize Clamp's signature wings.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971928.jpeg

Part of the ruffle on her skirt didn't get completely painted.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971930.jpeg

A real highlight of the figure is the wings on her staff.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971932.jpeg

Look at all the detail and texture! The wings really exceeded my expectations; they seem to be made from either a rubber-like material or soft vinyl, and as such they are a little bit flexible. This eases some concerns about her wings getting broken in transit.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971967.jpeg

Part of the "eye" on her sealing staff didn't get completely painted.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971969.jpeg

Another highlight of the figure is the rendering of the Clow Book. It is a spot-on match as far as its appearance, and the appearance of the Clow Cards matches their appearance in the anime. Interestingly, FuRyu decided to depict the Move and Jump cards. I would have probably included the Fly card, but that's just me. Note that the printing on the Jump card extends a little bit on to the Move card, but that will not be noticeable unless you're staring right at the cards.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971971.jpeg

The backs of the cards also faithfully replicate their design. Note the same printing flaw occurs on the backs of the cards.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971973.jpeg

The little gold accents on the Clow Book are pretty well done in general. Not bad at all for a prize figure.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398971975.jpeg

There is a little bit of extra material on her fingers.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398972025.jpeg

The little bows on her shoes are very cute.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398972027.jpeg

Most of the shots so far have been of Sakura at eye level. Here is Sakura viewed from below.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398972029.jpeg

Unlike many figures, she looks pretty good viewed from above. If the bottom shelf in your Detolf is wasting away, Sakura will still look OK displayed on a low shelf.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398972031.jpeg

Base----------8/10

I'd give the base a 10/10 for its concept and 6/10 for execution.

Sakura is supported via a peg in her foot, a peg that attaches to her dress and a support arm under her leg. This figure has non-trivial mass, and the base is quite small (about 10 cm in diameter) so I would have preferred a slightly larger base with a third peg that can be attached to her skirt.

The base seems adequate in supporting the figure, but I'd caution against displaying her on a high shelf or anywhere she could be knocked over, all the same.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398972033.jpeg

I do like the fact FuRyu incorporated Sakura's magic circle into the base, though.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398972078.jpeg

The attachment points on the base.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398972080.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------10/10

Despite some flaws, and a little bit of apprehension about her base, I think this Sakura is probably the best mass-produced figure of the character currently available. So, let's finish the review by a quick look at her scale.

Sakura with an older Sega prize Sakura item #3585. I was a little concerned that this Sakura would be tiny considering her seated pose, but that Sega figure is approximately 1/6 scale and so you can see my fears were unfounded.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398972116.jpeg

Sakura with Nendo Flonne, for comparison. The way she's posed, Sakura is about 19 cm (7.5 inches) tall.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398972140.jpeg

Sakura with Ayu Tsukimiya. Ayu is 1/8 scale, so you can see that Sakura will be similar in size to most 1/8 scale figures.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1398972177.jpeg

So in summary, if you are a fan of CCS, I can think of no reason not to have this figure in your collection. Considering her price was only 1500 yen, she is really an outstanding figure!

Availability (as of this writing)

Good question.

As far as I can tell, she's sold out most everywhere. However, on her MFC item page, apparently some proxy sellers have been offering her at around 4000 yen (her original price was 1500 yen). If I had to guess, I would speculate that given Sakura's popularity, the pre-order demand for the figure, and the relative lack of good Sakura figures out there, that 4000 yen figure might be Sakura's price point on the secondary market if you didn't grab a new one during the preorder window.

sorrowmoon (3 years ago) #2124771I'm really liking FuRyu. Prize figs for 1500 and they look better than some of the high priced figs. Sure they aren't perfect but for 1500 they are pretty impressive.

Can't disagree with that :).

darkrose (3 years ago) #2124884Thanks for the great review. I sort of agree with you on the face (which does not really look like Sakura from some angles) and the seemingly "weak" pegs to support her. But overall she looks amazing. Will grab her if I see her in my local shop

The pegs look to be reasonably strong and they extend far into the base, but I'm hoping they will not become brittle over time...

mintbunny (3 years ago) #2124482Just got mine today. I think the base was a bit complicated, but considering the pose, how else could you do it. One of her shoe bows came off on mine but it goes right back in. But those wings are epic and the book is great and she's just too cute. I've got a few seams lines and the paint job on that yellow stripe is meh, but for $20 you really can't complain. I do not regret buying her.

When she is displayed, those supports are very visible but like you said, I just see another alternative to keep her stable, given the mass of the figure. I figure that the stripe on her skirt will have quite a bit of variation from figure to figure in how well it's painted. There will be good ones and bad ones, but that's prize figures...

NemsEngelAceSasu (3 years ago) #2123882I still can't decide to get her. I love the wings but hate the bad painting. .. >_<

Well, if this was a 6000 yen figure, then yes the painting would be substandard. For a 1500 yen prize figure though, I'm inclined to be a little more forgiving.

Maakie (3 years ago) #2123846So cute! <3 I'm still waiting for mine to arrive! (Dutch costums *sobs*)
The sculpt has a lot of amazing details and the painting including the small defects is what I expected. ;)
I love how the box matches when it comes to art with the older Sakura figures I have. :)

My first reaction when I was unpacking the figure was "hey, I know this artwork!" :).
