Sega "Fruits Punch" Rei/Asuka

Today, we'll be doing a two-for-one review of a couple of Sega prize figures, their "Fruits Punch" figures of the iconic Rei and Asuka. There may be a few shots that are a little bit NSFW.

About these figures: These figures were released back in March 2012, and the sculpt was designed by the illustrator Okama. Okama has a very diverse body of work, and a few other Sega prize figures were based on his designs. Okama also did an artbook named Food Girls which spawned a few figures of its own, and this Rei and Asuka are in keeping with that theme. This Rei and Asuka are nowhere near as ecchi as the two Food Girls that got the figure treatment, though...

I'm pretty sure that most everyone knows Rei and Asuka, so let's get right to the review!

Packaging----------8/10

The boxes are cute, and in keeping with the fruit theme of these figures.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052391.jpeg

These were prize figures, and I got mine preowned from AmiAmi (B/B). Since that little cutout was punched out, I wonder if the figure's previous owner won her in a crane game at the arcade?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052393.jpeg

The backs of both boxes are identical, and Sega includes a drawing to help get the figures set up.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052395.jpeg

Both boxes measure 21 by 14 by 12 cm and Rei and Asuka weigh in around 250 grams each, so shipping shouldn't set you back a fortune.

Both figures require a minimal amount of set up. Rei's umbrella has a small peg which attaches to the inside of her hand.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052432.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052434.jpeg

Asuka's base has a small peg which keeps the umbrella in place.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052661.jpeg

The umbrella then rotates forward, and the end of the umbrella also has a small peg which attaches to the underside of her hand.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052663.jpeg

Hardly a week goes by on MFC where there's no discussion of B/B items from AmiAmi. Both of these items were B/B, and they had both obviously been opened. Both Rei and Asuka were quite dusty, but a quick dip in the sink fixed that up.

Posing----------9/10

I think the poses on these two figures are very cute. Setting aside the hyper-cute factor, their poses are both in keeping with the personalities of the characters. IMO, sometimes non-canon figures of Rei and Asuka get a little outrageous to the point where nothing of the characters' personalities is reflected, so the fact that their personalities shine through is a big plus.

Let's start by taking a look at Rei.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052509.jpeg

We can debate all day whether Rei Ayanami was ever intended to be a moe archetype (although this Rei is certainly is super-moe), but this figure nicely captures Rei's generally reserved personality!

Now let's have a look at Asuka.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052717.jpeg

Take Asuka's brash and outspoken personality and dial up the cute to 11, and you have this figure!

Given how well the two figures capture the essence of Rei and Asuka in cute packages, there are no complaints about the poses!

Sculpting----------8.5/10*
Painting----------8.5/10*

*-these ratings take into account that these are inexpensive prize figures and represent ratings relative to other prize figures.

Sega prize figures have gotten better by about an order of magnitude over the last few years, and these figures continue that trend. They have a few issues with sculpt and paint, but at a glance there is not a huge difference finish-wise between these figures and what you might get from that middle tier of (non-prize) figure companies.

Rei looks pretty cute from this angle. The little lemon wedge bracelet on her wrist is a nice touch as well. Her hairclips are lemon-shaped, and I like Sega's decision to color them white as opposed to yellow, since this brings to mind the neuroclips that she would normally wear.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052513.jpeg

A number of things are going on in the shot below. The red eyes are of course one of Rei's signature features and in addition, the juice dripping from her umbrella is a nice little touch. A notable feature of these figures is the little holes in their outfits, and her striped pantsu are quite cute.

There are a few negatives as well, like that black spot in her hair which resisted all efforts to remove it, and you can see a seam running up her arm.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052511.jpeg

The curve in the umbrella looks just a little bit weird. There's a messy spot in her hair as well.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052515.jpeg

In this shot, you can see some messy painting on her panties, and her elbow is a real mess. That is almost certainly the biggest flaw with either figure, though.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052564.jpeg

I like the way she's arching her back a little bit, and the level of detail on her back is better than I was expecting.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052566.jpeg

The outfits on these figures are made from a very soft and flexible material.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052570.jpeg

Underneath her boots, it looks like she's wearing a pair of sandals.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052572.jpeg

Asuka's personality is very much evident, and I like the armbands which match her stockings. Like we saw with Rei, the strawberry hairclips mimic her neuroclips from the anime. The hole in her dress is also strawberry-shaped.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052719.jpeg

Neither of these figures is particularly buxom, but Asuka is not quite as flat as Rei...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052721.jpeg

Her two ponytails are not quite the same color. The star-shaped caps on the strawberries are cute, though.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052783.jpeg

The way she's leaning forward and the hand on her hip are both very Asuka-like. Note that her bracelets are made of the same clear material as her dress. On mine, there was a little chunk missing from her dress, as you can see.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052785.jpeg

Her green panties are quite cute, but you can see some messy painting around the tops of her stockings.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052787.jpeg

It looks like she's wearing little red toe-rings underneath her boots. I hadn't noticed that particular feature until I saw the figure in person.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052789.jpeg

IMO, you cannot really have one of these figures without the other, since they complement each other so well!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052874.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052876.jpeg

Overall, these figures have a few issues (notably, Rei's right elbow is a real mess), but this Rei and Asuka would compare favorably with many non-prize figures, so I would have to say that Sega did quite well in this respect!

Bases----------6/10

As far as the bases go, they are white and they are round...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052872.jpeg

Sega screws both Rei and Asuka into their bases. This was unexpected, since these are not particularly large or weighty figures. As a plus, the bases are small, about 10 cm (4 inches) in diameter, so they won't take up too much space on your shelf.

Scale Comparison

Rei and Asuka with Sega's Poyoyon Rock Rei and Asuka (ITEM #1297 and ITEM #1298), who are pretty darn cute themselves...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052940.jpeg

Some of the various non-canon Rei and Asuka figures in my collection. The lack of availability of a Rei bunny to go with Asuka is a serious collective oversight...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404052997.jpeg

One of the lesser known cards in Sakura's Clow deck was the Fruits card, which would transform anyone she wanted into a hyper-moe, fruitified version of that person. Like that would ever happen...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404170261.jpeg

Italia-san ITEM #4715 is 1/9 scale, and you can see, Rei is a little bit bigger.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404170352.jpeg

Sora Kasugano ITEM #12046 a pretty petite 1/8 scale, and she's a little bit larger than both Rei and Asuka.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1404170317.jpeg

In terms of scale, both Rei and Asuka measure right around 17 cm (7 inches) in height. The "real" Rei and Asuka are about 4'11" and 5'1" (149 cm and 155 cm) respectively in height, so I'd put the scale of these figures somewhere between 1/8 and 1/9 scale.

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

As far as value for money, these two figures are pretty big winners if you are a fan of the characters and you like the hyper-kawaii motif.

In summary...

Arguments for: If you like cute figures, you'll be hard-pressed to find a cuter Rei and Asuka, the quality is pretty good, their transparent coats are quite distinctive, and the figures do an excellent job capturing the personality of the characters.

Arguments against: If you do not like non-canon Eva merchandise, then these are not the figures you're looking for, and they really need to be paired together in my opinion.

For the price, they really can't be beat and so if you're looking for a cute and slightly offbeat take on these two iconic characters, I'd strongly recommend these two figures.

Availability (as of this writing)

Not quite common, but not too hard to find.

These figures were on my radar for quite a while, but I could never seem to find both of them together at the same time, and I didn't want to have just one of them without the other. I finally tracked them both down (B/B) on AmiAmi for just shy of 2000 yen. Somewhere between 1000-1500 yen apiece should do the trick; quite a bargain, I think!

Maakie (3 years ago) #2412686In that set I like the Rei a lot more! :) They are cute as witches, although it's not really relevant to NGE! :P A friend of mine is selling the Rei only, but without a box. I could ask her, but I think you only want sets + boxed, right?

Definitely, where I have a Rei, the matching Asuka must follow :).

victorviper (3 years ago) #2404815I wouldn't mind having ITEM #5444 and ITEM #5062 , as they were also done by Okama, but they seem pretty hard to find these days. As far as the Food Girls go, I considered getting Nasubi-sama ITEM #3286 a while back, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy her. Maybe like you said, the cute+weird factor is just a little too high...

I have seen Nusabi at a friends' place and I got to say I wasn't really blown away at her quality. She isn't bad either.

Maakie (3 years ago) #2404768Ah, what a cutie pies! Normally I like Rei more, but here I think Asuka really stands out! They look great as set, but I think Asuka alone is already quite amazing. I'm not too find of Rei alone, though. On the figures I love the transparant effects and especially the boots! Leave it to Okama when it comes to designs that are cute and weird at the same time! ^^ Thanks to him we have the lovely Nekomura Iroha and personally I have been looking at ITEM #2574 a lot, but I jut think she is a bit too much considering how unhappy her face looks. :(

Thanks for reading!

DelicateThunder (3 years ago) #2386844I've had Rei for awhile now, and she really is very cute and sweet in person. Since my husband and i aren't exactly Asuka fans, we passed on her. Seeing them together is having me reconsider....
Great review. ^_^

I was in the opposite position. I don't have too many Rei figures, but having this Asuka by herself without Rei would be wrong somehow...

S1257 (3 years ago) #2386915Nice review, although you rated them a little higher than I would have. The poses are cute, but the outfits are just bizarre.

I think the outfits are bizarre in a good way though, with all their little quirks (the fruit theme, the clear outfits, the cutouts). With figures, so many tropes get used over and over (maids, swimsuits, shrine maidens, race queens, and so on), it's nice to see something completely different every now and then.
