Gift 1/4 Sena Kashiwazaki

Today we'll be reviewing one of my most anticipated figures of 2014, Gift's Sena Kashiwazaki. At 1/4 scale, she's practically bursting out of her iconic blue bikini, so many of the shots below could be considered moderately NSFW. You've been warned...

About the character: Sena Kashiwazaki is one of the main characters from the Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (Haganai) anime and manga. Sena comes from a wealthy family, she is attractive, and she is good at academics to boot. However, she also has an extremely haughty demeanor, and thus she has a difficult time making friends. As a result, she decides to join the newly-formed "Neighbors Club" in the hope of making some new friends. Almost immediately after joining the club, she is given the nickname niku (meat) by her friend/mortal enemy Yozora Mikazuki because of her busty physique. Additionally, Sena enjoys playing gal-games because they allow her to simulate friendship with other girls, although at times the adult content of those games makes her very embarrassed...

Now, on to the review.

Packaging----------8.5/10

There are plenty of windows in the box, enabling a good view of the lovely Sena. The "swimsuit version" text on the front of the box strikes me as funny. If you had any doubt as to what you're buying, rest assured this is most definitely Sena in a swimsuit...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406763794.jpeg

The sides of the box feature large shots of the figure.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406763796.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406763800.jpeg

The back of the box is a solid panel.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406763798.jpeg

Because of Sena's size, the box is large, measuring 47 by 18 by 16 cm. Figure and box weigh in just under 1.2 kg. Even though there's not much wasted space in the box, the fact that it's long and skinny means she'll likely need a large shipping box and plenty of packing, so estimate conservatively for shipping costs if you plan on buying the figure.

Sena inside the blister. She comes pre-attached to the base, so after opening up the blister and removing some plastic sheeting, she'll be ready to go!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406763802.jpeg

The box is made from a fairly heavy corrugated cardboard to keep Sena out of harm's way during shipping. So, the packaging is functional and it's not insanely large, and thus there are no real complaints on this front.

Posing----------9/10

I like it when a figure's pose has a basis in the original source material, and Sena's pose is based on an illustration which sure looks like the work of Buriki (the illustration below was used on a menu in the US DVD release of the show as well). In the anime, Sena is seen on multiple occasions in a similar pose, with her arms sort of propping up her breasts like this. Maybe that saves some strain on the back...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764310.jpeg

Let's have a look at her.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764095.jpeg

Overall, her pose is faithful to the illustration, and it gives Sena ample opportunity to show off her curves, so there are no complaints here!

Sculpting----------8.5/10
Painting----------8.5/10

Overall, I would say the finish of the figure is very good. She has a couple of very conspicuous flaws, but she also has some interesting features to compensate.

In the anime and manga, Sena is portrayed as a very beautiful girl and I think this feature translates into the figure. Her skin tone looks really nice and her eyes are very expressive. She also looks so happy...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764097.jpeg

A closer view of her lovely face.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764099.jpeg

There are a few flaws in Sena's hair. You can see a couple flaws in the front piece of hair, and there is a weird seam running right down the middle of her bangs. On the plus side, however, the shading and texture in her hair looks pretty good.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764101.jpeg

There is a spot or two where some dark-colored paint made its way into her hair. It resisted my attempts to remove it with a magic eraser.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764103.jpeg

The back of her hair also has quite a bit of shading. Her hair is not quite as wispy as it appears in that illustration above, but neither is it a clumpy mess.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764155.jpeg

I like the way some of her hair is resting in her cleavage...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764157.jpeg

The seam attaching her bangs stands out a little bit.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764159.jpeg

One of Sena's key features is her butterfly hairclip. The lines on its wings are textured and not simply painted on, which is a nice touch. There are a couple of small painting imperfections on the hairclip, but it's not the sort of thing you'll notice unless you're really looking close.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764161.jpeg

When some of the promo shots of this figure came out, there was some concern that her face would look like Mikudayo ENCYCLOPEDIA #43521 from certain angles. Seeing her in person, this is not entirely unfounded, but IMO she only looks awkward from one angle (viewing her from her left side from below). I'm willing to let that slide.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764205.jpeg

On the other hand, she looks very cute from several different angles!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764245.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764247.jpeg

I like the fact that even though she's kind of smushing them together, her oppai are not just one unit.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764249.jpeg

Although Sena is obviously very buxom, she doesn't just have two ping-pong balls glued to her chest. There's some shape there, so that's also a plus.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764251.jpeg

Sena's blue bikini has become somewhat iconic, and as is the norm these days, it appears to be a little bit too small for her. Thus, she shows off a little bit of underboob.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764306.jpeg

Her tricolor bracelets are cute, and I like the fact the Gift went to the trouble to sculpt the tiny individual links on the gold bracelet.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764312.jpeg

Her hands are nicely sculpted, with pink nails.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764314.jpeg

She has a little bit of a seam running down her shoulder. In fairness, it's very light and I had to mess with the lighting a little bit so it would show up in a photo, but it is most definitely there. Under normal lighting, it's not quite so noticeable, though. The sculpting on the bow is pretty good, too.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764384.jpeg

It's very hard to see, but there's a little bit of a gap where her arm, the ribbon, and her breast meet. You can see a tiny speck of wayward paint near her shoulder as well.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406853498.jpeg

Sena is not a toothpick, and she has just a little bit of a stomach. In episode three of the first season (when Sena's bikini makes its debut), this is explicitly pointed out when Sena and Kodaka are having a snack at the pool. Note how you can easily differentiate where her hip ends and her belly starts; that's a really nice detail!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764386.jpeg

A number of things are going on in the shot below. The ties on Sena's bikini bottom are well sculpted and non-chunky. Furthermore, the shading on her bikini bottom is a nice touch, and I like how you can see the little creases in her flesh where her legs and her pelvis meet.

One negative is that it looks like her bottoms were first painted blue and then the yellow trim was painted on top. However, the yellow finish doesn't look like it completely covered up the finish below in a couple of spots.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764388.jpeg

This just wouldn't be Sena if her thighs didn't have some substance to them, and Gift doesn't disappoint!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764450.jpeg

Her legs are shapely and attractive.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764454.jpeg

Sena definitely has some junk in the trunk, as they say, but in a good way.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764511.jpeg

Gift gives her some butt dimples. I'm not generally a big fan of this feature, but it's not terribly distracting. I also like how you can see the material in her bikini bottom being stretched and pulled to accommodate her ample assets.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764515.jpeg

Gift gives the backs of her knees quite a bit of detail.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764519.jpeg

There is a little bit of sloppy painting on the trim of her bottoms.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764582.jpeg

She has nice calves, too.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764584.jpeg

I like that her toes are well differentiated. The pink toenails are cute, too. I'm not exactly an expert on what strappy sandals should look like, but the fact that Gift sculpted trim on all the straps is a nice touch.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764719.jpeg

The tiny buckle is nicely done.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764721.jpeg

So, she has a few issues with sculpt and paint, but Gift did an excellent job capturing her beauty and her ample physique!

Base----------7/10

Well, it's round and it's white.

I would have liked to see something a little more elaborate, but although the base is kind of plain, it has a couple of good features. At 5.25" (13.5 cm) in diameter, it is not outrageously large. Further, it appears that metal screws/pegs are used to secure Sena to the base, which given her nontrivial mass is an absolute necessity.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764723.jpeg

So, it's not an exciting base, but it's not overly intrusive and it seems at least adequate to support the figure.

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------10/10

Let's take a look at her scale before we get to the final wrap-up.

Sena with Orchid Seed's 1/5 Sonico ITEM #198372. I'd assume that Sonico and Sena are about equivalent in their height and overall build, so you can see the difference between 1/5 and 1/4 scale.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764775.jpeg

Just like Sonico, I wouldn't blame anyone if they chose to display Sena facing backwards!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764777.jpeg

Sena with Kotobukiya's 1/6 Mikoto Misaka ITEM #155355.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764819.jpeg

Both Alphamax's Sena ITEM #106566 and Kotobukiya's Hoshii Miki ITEM #98895 are 1/7 scale. Anime needs more blonde characters, don't you think?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764914.jpeg

Sena and Sena.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406764961.jpeg

The hugeness of this Sena starts to become apparent when she's displayed next to smaller scale figures. Here is Sena with the 1/8 scale Sora Kasugano ITEM #12046.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406765009.jpeg

FREEing's Kuroko Shirai ITEM #135060 is also 1/4 scale, but Sena is taller, bunny ears and all. She's not as petite as Kuroko, after all.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406765073.jpeg

The three sizes of this Sena are 8.25-6-8.25 inches (21-15-21 cm), and the total length of her body is 15.5 inches (39.5 cm). At 1/4 scale, that would make her 33-24-33 inches and about 5'2", which seems consistent with her character design.

Because of the way she's bending over slightly, Sena and base are about 15.5 inches (39.5 cm) tall. For the Detolf owners out there, she will just barely fit in the bottom shelf. However, the shelf heights in a Detolf are not quite uniform, and she wouldn't fit in any of the other shelves in any of my Detolfs.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406765516.jpeg

Sena finds Kobato quite adorable. Do you suppose that Kobato is worried or just simply in awe?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1406765427.jpeg

In summary...

Arguments for: This Sena is full of personality, Gift nicely recreates her ample physique, there are lots of little details that bring the figure to life (her skin tone, the texture on her butterfly clip, the trim on the sandals), and all this Sena will still fit in your Detolf!

Arguments against: Bland base, noticeable seams in her hair, some painting flaws here and there, and there's no one else from the Haganai cast in large scale to pair her up with! Gift eventually released all of the Nanoha girls in 1/4 scale, so here's hoping they eventually get around to making someone else from this cast.

Overall, I'd say she's not perfect but this Sena is really an excellent figure. Rather than exiling her to one of my Detolfs, I've opted to display her right next to my computer, since under normal ambient light her skin tone makes her look just gorgeous!

If you're a fan of the character and you have some room in your display space and your figure budget, I'd highly recommend this particular Sena. It's not too often I'll buy more than one figure of the same character in the same outfit, and the Alphamax 1/7 Sena is a fine figure, but this one is pretty magnificent despite some small flaws.

Availability (as of this writing)

Sold out new.

It looks like she's sold out at AmiAmi, Hobby Search, and HLJ. I'll be very interested to see what happens to her price on the secondary market. Gift has done a fair number of larger-scale figures; some of them, like Tamaki ITEM #27830 have held their value, while others such as Fate ITEM #117636 have seen sizable price drops.

victorviper (2 years ago) #2533446I've had no complaints with Gift figures. Every time their 1/4 Hayate Yagami ITEM #73698 pops up, I'm always tempted by her. I'm not even a huge Nanoha fan, but something about that figure always draws my eye.

I didn't even watch Nanoha! ;) For some reason, she was really cheap so I got her, no regret. It it seems Gift quality improved with Sena. I'll try to hunt her next year.

secretly-otaku (3 years ago) #2284481My guess was that Tamaki wouldn't fit in the same detolf you put your Sena. And I know you don't have her... but maybe you should, uh? XP... and I don't know, I keep having this image in my head of a sofa and a small table right next to it with Sena and Tamaki on it, while watching anime in a huge TV screen. Ultimate Otaku cave!

2. Sweet back alert. (I wish we had a sweet back tag on MFC)

I like the idea of "sweet back". It could the new "dat ass".

Valkyria (3 years ago) #2285527I agree! ITEM #61425 was my first ever 1/4 scale and I was so impressed when I got her. I also had to get at least one Cattleya so I opted for ITEM #156660 (though technically she's listed 1/4.5). Really nice figure as well, IMO.
This will be my first Sena figure and it looks like I chose well. She's on her way to me and your review has me excited to finally see her in person. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on her!

Those Freezing figures look really nice, but I never saw the show, so I guess I don't have much connection to the characters. Hopefully the magnificence that is this Sena will arrive soon!

Maakie (3 years ago) #2285563I absolutely love her expression! And her hair looks great too!

Her expression is pretty great. A happy Sena is the best Sena.

victorviper (3 years ago) #2284433...I don't own that Tamaki, so it's hard to say if she'd fit in a Detolf. Given her slightly more upright pose, my first guess would be no. On the other hand, according to her MFC page, she's about 1/10 inch taller than Sena; if those measurements are correct, so might just fit on the bottom shelf. I've learned that the actual size of a figure and what it says on its MFC page are not always the same, though! My guess was that Tamaki wouldn't fit in the same detolf you put your Sena. Most every figure shows up somewhere eventually at a good price. I'm sure there will be opportunities in the future...

secretly-otaku (3 years ago) #2284378She is beautiful and sexy. Gotta tell you, I do appreciate all the details given to the bikini and that butt... I just can say she's up right there with Sonico in that department IMO.
And that Tamaki you mention on your review would look amazing next to this Sena, altough given her pose, she wouldn't fit in a detolf, right? I don't know, I kinda dig the idea of displaying figures of that scale on a lamp table or something similar. Just saying :).

Beautiful and sexy is a good description, and I like the fact that she's actually quite tasteful for a large-scale bikini figure :).
