Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Sailor Mercury S.H. Figuarts ZERO

sooyongsooyong3 years agoReview
Today's review is on the Sailor Mercury Figuarts ZERO figurine from Tamashii Nations. It was exclusively available for pre-order from Premium Bandai in Japan in March and just released this month.

Making it exclusive to Premium Bandai meant better price control up until release. I wasn't particularly happy with that, but after seeing Mercury in such an elegant and beautiful pose, I just had to make a pre-order!

Mercury comes in a box similar to the Sailor Moon Figuarts ZERO figurine:

Unlike with Sailor Moon and her Cutie Moon Rod being a separate piece, Mercury has no separate parts. No assembly required!

Everything about Mercury is remarkable, from her pose to the base and the strand of water behind her. She is literally in her element of water, and it's absolutely refreshing to see her in an action pose, because I think I speak for all Sailor Moon fans when I say that she is notorious for awkward and unnatural poses.

The sculpt and paint job are very well done. I love the metallic blue that they chose for her hair, and the jeweled effect of her blue brooch.I found no defects whatsoever. The wrinkles in the front of her skirt look a little weird to me, as if they kind of overdid it on the detail. I'm not sure if it's consistent with her pose, but it's not something to think too much about.

Another thing to definitely not overlook is the water. The water behind her is actually attached to her body and not connected at all to the water at the base. It's made of a stiff plastic like the base, while the water attached to the base is made of some sort of flexible plastic.

The base is also perfectly stable, and doesn't look plain and cheap like Sailor Moon's crescent moon base. I wish they had put more thought into Sailor Moon's base, as well as the upcoming Venus' and Jupiter's stands. Of the five, Mercury and Mars are by far the most aesthetically pleasing to me so far.

Her leotard, like Sailor Moon's, is high-cut under her skirt. I remember some people having complaints about this when it came to Sailor Moon, but I have zero complaints about the cut. Perverts can stare at it all they want, as it's not visible unless you're actually looking under the skirt.

In side-by-side comparison with Sailor Moon, she actually looks a bit smaller, but Moon does have the hair going for her. All I can think about is the fact that Usagi is supposed to be the shortest of the five Inner Senshi (at least from what I remember as a kid) but not by too much compared to Mercury. Perhaps it's just the pose that makes Ami look more petite.

Overall, I'm incredibly pleased about Sailor Mercury! I often feel like she is overlooked and under-appreciated as a Sailor Senshi, so I'm glad that she's been honored with this incredible work of art! I usually try to be strict with scoring, but I really can't find anything wrong with her that's worth taking a whole point off!

If you want to grab this figurine and you live in the US, you can still pre-order it from Amazon for $89.99, though it won't be available until the end of September. You'll also save some money compared to what I ended up spending in Japan. (No regrets, because I have her here now and not back at my parents' house in the US!)

OMG You're right, Mercury is too under loved compared to the others! I personally love her, as my favorite of the Inners with Mars. Also great to see how her final piece looks, I'll def be picking her up at some point.

Great review!

R_Kasahara (3 years ago) #2327992Some other Premium Bandai exclusives, like the Daft Punk S.H. Figuarts, have been regular releases in the US (distributed by Bluefin). It seems to be a similar case here. Those Daft Punk figures have dipped below MSRP since release, at least on Amazon, so there's a good chance that Mercury could as well.

According to this www.scifijapan.... it looks like the one on Amazon IS the Bluefin release. Though as you said, it's still possible that the price will drop after it actually comes out.

sooyong (3 years ago) #2327697The Amazon US page says in the description that "This licensed product is distributed and shipped exclusively by an authorized Bandai retailer within and for the U.S. and Canadian markets." So I'm not sure if there will be a U.S. release, but I suppose after a couple of months, if the supply of people selling privately goes up, the price will drop.

Thanks for the review, I'm glad to see that she turned out well. I've had her pre-ordered through Amazon for a while (that I currently have free two-day shipping due to their student promotion and that I won't have to worry about customs fees since she's shipping within the country made it hard to resist) and was hoping to see a review of her before payment time came around.

And I've seen a few people remark on the scale issues with this line. It doesn't bother me too much since Mercury's probably the only one I'll end up getting (unless Jupiter turns out fantastic once she's painted, but we'll see), but if I were collecting all of them I might be a little more annoyed. And I also wish they'd all been given bases as nice as Mercury and Mars.

She is my favourite but I am still waiting for a US release since it will be cheaper than the "exclusive" Japan version.
