Vocaloid - Calne Ca - Hdge - Nurse Cos ver. (Union Creative Inte

MaakieMaakie3 years agoReview
! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

! This is a review of a figure in an outfit that can be considered NSFW !

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about Calne Ca's Nurse Cos version ENCYCLOPEDIA #50879 from Vocaloid ENCYCLOPEDIA #41 ! This figure ITEM #162402 is made by Union Creative International Ltd ENCYCLOPEDIA #17625 , a manufacturer that is pretty new when it comes to making scaled figures!

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

Vocaloid is voice synthesizer software of which I think it doesn't need much introduction here. The software made it so that a lot of people came up with their own songs and sometimes also variations of the existing characters. Calne Ca is one of those characters, she is created by artist Deino www.deino.sakur... . Deino has a very unique artstyle and I think the easiest way to give an introduction to his work is to watch this short video that he made as an commercial for the Calne Ca figures:

Calne Ca is a mechanized skeleton, with her best friend being the cockroach that is always on top of her head. She started off as an original character from Deino, but was later also offically made an Vocaloid. There is not much known about her personality, but Deino let us know that she is usually very friendly.

She appears in quite a lot of original songs, of which I made a small selection in the spoiler, for the people that want to get more familiar with her before reading the review! View spoilerHide spoiler

Bacterial Contamination

Bacterial Contamination is in my opinion, lyrics-wise, the most beuatiful Calne Ca song. While the style of the video and sound of the song may seem scary at first, it has a really strong message about what bullying does to you. View spoilerHide spoilerSomething I can unfortunately relate to.

Machine Muzik

Machine Muzik is Calne Ca's main song. A very upbeat, electronic song. I like it a lot!

~ATARAXIA~

Song-wise I always thought of ~ATARAXIA~ sounding a bit too messy to be fully appreciated, but oh, how I love the animations Deino made for this video!

Nehanshika

A bit of an older video and song by Deino. Which is also visible from the animations and models. Although both the singing and the video feel very hasty, I've grown quite a liking to this song over the years.

There are even more videos and songs of Calne Ca out there, so if all or some of the above interested you, I recommend you to take a good look around on Youtube, for example on Deino's official channel: www.youtube.com... And I wish you lots of fun watching/listening!

The reason why and how I got her

I was a bit "late" with discovering Calne Ca and Deino's work, as the first video I ever saw from her was Bacterial Contamination which was released 2 years ago. I was very impressed and that lead to me looking more into Deino's work in general. I ended up liking a lot of his artwork, also his non-Vocaloid art and sculptures. I also tried looking into merchandise of his work, but not much was made back then except for some doujinshi artbooks which were incredibly hard to find.

Then, when Calne Ca's figures got announced over a year ago, I almost fell off my chair. I couldn't believe something that was Deino's work would get a figure, as the character design is something you don't see much made into figure form! Even though ITEM #162401 is the original Calne Ca, I personally felt a lot more attracted to her Nurse version, because of the colors. She was an instant pre-order for me, even though I didn't know much about the manufacturer.

Now with Deino's work slowly getting more popular and getting more merchandise, new figures of his work have been announced too with characters from his light novel project ITEM #260969 , from the bacterial contamination song ITEM #261214 and from original artwork ITEM #261527 . Also recently there has been more merchandise from Deino's works when it comes to jewellry and clothing.

The Nurse Cos Version of Calne Ca was especially thought up and made for this figure. That means not that much artwork is made of it. Above is the artwork where you can see most of the details on her. Her overall apperance is very similar to the original Calne Ca and the biggest differences can be found in the clothing and usage of colors.

The Box

View spoilerHide spoilerLadies and gentlemen, I present to you the Big In Japan shipping way!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DR2woPvHHPY/VHeGg9nA3CI/AAAAAAAACRE/CE7OTTKZDtc/s720/IMG_2936.JPG

I'm very happy that Big In Japan uses very high quality, thick cardboard boxes, although if I knew beforehand how beautiful this box would be, I would have probably chosen a more safe shipping method.

The box, wow, just wow! Amazing! I don't even know where to start! The outer design is amazing and there are so much reflective parts. The box feels very sturdy and high quality. From the moment I laid my eyes on it, I was sure this is the most beautiful box for a figure that I've ever seen!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BKthQ1czXCU/VHeGceZSwwI/AAAAAAAACQg/HaYeSVacG8g/s720/IMG_2957.JPG

All the reflective parts are so pretty!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-cV4I9osUmI8/VHeGgFoXVCI/AAAAAAAACQ4/W6PGupv8_co/s912/IMG_2959.JPG

I like how the box also mentions the sculptor and Deino himself. They also put down the 3 main sites that Deino uses!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-7xusF-4HZXY/VHeGiSMoTRI/AAAAAAAACRc/TmQZlEn0OEA/s720/IMG_2962.JPG

I was a bit surprised when I opened the box and saw the left part of the blister bended. There is no damage to the outer box at all, so it must be something that happened in the factory?

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-x6hM-ODQT34/VHeGi4wyfMI/AAAAAAAACRg/7Sc1mj1cVB4/s720/IMG_2963.JPG

The inside of the box is very psychadelic. I really love how it shines and changes colors! But let's not forget we still have a figure to look at...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QzraoCd0DxQ/VHeRwEQX9eI/AAAAAAAACZE/n5X-qd2o8iw/s720/IMG_2968.JPG

The blisters are very big and so is the figure! There is a lot of empty space inside the blisters though, which I think is also the reason...

The Figure - Opening

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hgoEmGdz2fE/VHeGn_mv1DI/AAAAAAAACSQ/s6czW95VBxk/s912/IMG_2971.JPG

...this happened. During transport (or maybe as a factory defect?) her left arm snapped off. Luckily it was an easy fix as I could use a small amount of superglue and put it back in it's place, but this is something you rather not see as an collector when you open up your new items...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-31qx4zmh6NE/VHeGmbTCVEI/AAAAAAAACSE/BsbbX3FOYiI/s912/IMG_2969.JPG

Then, with unpacking her the first thing that stood out was her base...and I don't really mean in a positive way...

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-BLbPIV3Dadc/VHeGmz1CIaI/AAAAAAAACSI/Ufock46-Xlk/s720/IMG_2970.JPG

Here is a CD for scale to show how huge the base is!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-quguccwUx1c/VHeGoqBwPXI/AAAAAAAACSY/ZVat4F33c4I/s912/IMG_2972.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-e_nQkT0mw_Y/VHeGpuOloOI/AAAAAAAACSg/pBNKAnfcdRQ/s912/IMG_2973.JPG

As for how Calne Ca connects to her base...there is no connection. You just put her in the transparant plastic part and hope she stays up. When I was photographing for this review she tumbled and leaned over a lot. When I afterwards put her on display in my detolf nothing happened. As long as you don't touch her and put her on her base once, she's good. Still, looking at the size, stability and amount of details on this base, this is all a big let down.

The Figure - First impressions

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P_cIa2CaIdA/VHeGs5TgvwI/AAAAAAAACS4/sX4nn2EHQLY/s720/IMG_2977.JPG

When I got her out for display and looked at her from a distance the only thing I could think was "wow"! Her posing, her mechanical parts, her skeleton arm...Calne Ca is such an unique character!

Looking at all the details!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TaFf2y2lerY/VHeGvialUXI/AAAAAAAACTI/m04hKoMQViA/s912/IMG_2979.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BuKbOh-euYw/VHeGuJ_3g8I/AAAAAAAACTA/Ne2ynZAr8tQ/s912/IMG_2978.JPG

The first thing that got my attention from her face were her very detailed eye decals. In the rest of her face the detailing is very simple.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-89YShLJFXmY/VHeGyWIeucI/AAAAAAAACTY/CX9TJRPP0k8/s912/IMG_2981.JPG

Her mouth-legs (no idea how else I should call it), have these small, transparant parts which I like a lot.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-aHfCapKk3Go/VHeGxLfS37I/AAAAAAAACTQ/1TenlcyFGuQ/s912/IMG_2980.JPG

The silver parts at the bottom though, are a bit messier when it comes to sculpt and paint.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-qtJ6fMkoELs/VHeG27HRTzI/AAAAAAAACT4/tLf1CS07Kdk/s912/IMG_2986.JPG

In case you are wondering how her mouth/jaw looks from below...there is not much there! The small pink parts we see here are probably her palate, while all the other parts are mechanized.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--A6EZ_d_sFU/VHeGzh7LpNI/AAAAAAAACak/k_DdaBi9BUM/s912/IMG_2983.JPG

Calne's cockroach has very nicely shaded painting and has been sculpted very well. Her nurse hat is very simple, but I love the bloody heart decal on there!

When looking closer at her hair, we will see quite a lot of let-downs. Let me prepare you readers upfront: her hair is one of the messiest parts!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xMbmfqEoeP0/VHeG0mYNzpI/AAAAAAAACTo/nRHHozNwuCI/s720/IMG_2984.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-5_ARsLFHQQo/VHeG1SDXG-I/AAAAAAAACTw/b6HzZEG5iFM/s720/IMG_2985.JPG

Here we see huge gaps where normally with figures only a few seamlines would be visible. Especially the parts around her ears are weird, it looks like they were glued on top of the rest of her hair.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-TCR5T8r6w0M/VHeG4fw7i2I/AAAAAAAACUA/JFgcRG6uJFs/s912/IMG_2987.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-m2EhDRAyZR8/VHeG5n2rNUI/AAAAAAAACUI/QuvOBiw47d4/s912/IMG_2988.JPG

Looking up close at her her hair ribbons just hurts me a bit. Both the painting and the sculpting is really messy.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-mlBueMGvTBs/VHeG-XufBUI/AAAAAAAACUo/m5wDy9z8SUs/s720/IMG_2992.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-5_Qt_dtbUWg/VHeG67y7Y6I/AAAAAAAACUQ/OEUi_GdFwEo/s720/IMG_2989.JPG

Calne Ca's hair has a really nice gradient, I really like how they did the painting here. When it comes to detailing in the hair it looks pretty good at the top and the middle, but when you move down to the tips...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-p_PQNnq3hXc/VHeG8YSSL6I/AAAAAAAACUY/8TWm8gsMk64/s720/IMG_2990.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gNlUeMzTH0A/VHeG_YCae7I/AAAAAAAACUw/QWUTWBjrk88/s720/IMG_2993.JPG

Sculpting leftovers, heaps of paint, just blegh, everything went wrong here! This is defenitely not up to the standards of nowadays figures and defenitely not what you would expect considering this figures' release price! I know Union Creative is pretty new at this, but this is just...too much!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-s-HBDCQnXpo/VHeHAShk7YI/AAAAAAAACU4/GcHXRL_d7p0/s720/IMG_2994.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-AQ0wpUNQEDE/VHeHCG8EQ7I/AAAAAAAACVA/YJvMYVmjVNk/s720/IMG_2995.JPG

Let's try to forget about the hair for now and look at other parts! Calne's upper body is nicely detailed when it comes to shading and I like that they kept the design of her breasts being "seperate" from her midriff. Her shirt is an opened version of Hatsune Miku's clothes, but without the tie. The details on the shirt itself are simple, but nicely done. I like the slight amount of shine it has. On her body there is a nice sculpt too and I especially like how her bellybutton was sculpted and shaded.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-LwqiprIJAUw/VHeHFo7rnWI/AAAAAAAACVQ/6aYKzJppbKQ/s912/IMG_2997.JPG

And after looking at something nice, we get something messy again. This figure is just ups and downs and ups and downs! Both of her belts are really messy when it comes to paint. The sculpting is pretty okay, but the quality of the paint is just too distracting.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-D8ndILCUf2A/VHeHJhRurMI/AAAAAAAACVo/5pO9gzwoytI/s720/IMG_3000.JPG

Next, let's take a look at her mechanical arm. The transition from her skin to her mechanical part is quite rough, and there is a small gap to be seen. On the other hand, on her design this is done pretty blunt too, so it's not that bad to see it like this (I do wonder if this was intentional or not).

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-OWUH3KiDpSg/VHeHLi_g2yI/AAAAAAAACV4/OPIFe9_MUU0/s720/IMG_3002.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-_LBiUlBY8q8/VHeHKnDitKI/AAAAAAAACVw/6CuBwC_-u0E/s720/IMG_3001.JPG

Her arm has an elbow-joint and at the place where her hand should be there is this big extension part followed by three big "fingers". The sculpting on her mechanical arm is really nice. The paint is one shade of silver all over. Personally I would have liked (and also expected a bit) for her arm to have some shading.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6xrouJ1i8lY/VHeHGxmurFI/AAAAAAAACVY/Knnu0K54a2k/s720/IMG_2998.JPG

Calne Ca's tattoo is a nicely put on decal. I (unfortunately) have no idea what it says, so if another user can translate it for me, I would be greatly interested! Translated by SASUNARUFAN13 : "The kanji on her arm is ' むくろ' ('mukuro') and it means bone(s); skeleton; corpse". Makes sense considering this is her skeleton arm!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-r8g_ERv9dTc/VHeHN7PLiAI/AAAAAAAACWI/t9WIbC7oX84/s720/IMG_3004.JPG

Continuing down we get to her skeleton arm. The transition from the flesh-part to the skeleton part I like a lot. Here it seems more like there was some sort of experiment/alteration that happened to her to let her arm become this way.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kMGXORGGKf4/VHeHO6TeC8I/AAAAAAAACWQ/vYXTyzGk-nU/s720/IMG_3005.JPG

The small, red tubes (my guess is blood to keep the arm alive?) are to be seen on a lot of smaller parts too. With her skeleton arm I'm really impressed by the shading, I like it a lot!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AuQ8hbBCjbM/VHeHQYUS65I/AAAAAAAACWY/5K91XOcTlo4/s912/IMG_3006.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KZsw1u70ZWc/VHeHR__oM0I/AAAAAAAACWg/Ca6mYPQPHDw/s912/IMG_3007.JPG

Calne wears a pleated white-and-red skirt. I like the movement of the pleats in the back. At the back we can also see that she wears something like a bag, but it looks more like the function of it is to keep both of her belts together.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-lUFrngigdug/VHeHS5YwrXI/AAAAAAAACWo/9SnZoQloWSM/s720/IMG_3008.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-JthQyBXfXgk/VHeHUhokOnI/AAAAAAAACWw/x_l_MtoJwKI/s912/IMG_3009.JPG

Calne Ca wears three big syringes at her belt. There is some transparant fluid sculpted in there, but it doesn't stand out much. I would have personally liked it if the fluid was a color that stand out more (probably red, because that would fit the rest of the figure also very well). I also think it's a bit disappointing that they didn't keep the extensive design of the syringes from the artwork View spoilerHide spoiler
http://myanimeshelf.com/upload/dynamic/2014-04/02/wallpaper_by_deino3330-d6r43bd2.jpg
, where they look more mechanical.

And yes! As always I have taken some fanservice shots from what's going on underneath the skirt!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0Bkbh0C76Hk/VHeHVh9RCpI/AAAAAAAACW4/O_cBuOeL4gk/s720/IMG_3010.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8su1uf3j2Os/VHeHWk183AI/AAAAAAAACXA/xXmcXL1PCVg/s720/IMG_3011.JPG

I guess this is not what most people expected! And it surprised me quite a bit too! The transition from her flesh parts to the start of her mechanical legs is really nice. It looks more natural (as far as this can look natural) than the transition with her mechanical arm. At her behind there is this weird, white block, which I guess is for sturdiness to the figure, as her bottom part is quite thin compared to the huge things going on at her upper body (I can imagine especially the weight of the arms being a lot). I do have to say I find it a bit of an ugly solution, but as I don't plan to look much underneath Calne Ca's skirt, I'm fine with it.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bxl_srCcPnA/VHeHXX3uUmI/AAAAAAAACXI/LxE7r-RUQmk/s720/IMG_3012.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6sGYYqtZ1bQ/VHeHY2BX2LI/AAAAAAAACXQ/myn0q0RATn8/s912/IMG_3013.JPG

Just like her mechanical arm, her mechanical legs have really nice details, but the paint is simple. The joints look really crisp, it's almost like you could move them. Which makes me think about Calne also being awesome if she was an action figure, her design works really well for that!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-xxkE7hmEDxo/VHeHdSUdGDI/AAAAAAAACXo/DZpHUlgJaBg/s912/IMG_3016.JPG

The back of her legs are in a crossed position, which I personally really like about the posing.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-3Y7kQPDX3UM/VHeHaqNe5yI/AAAAAAAACXY/sbpjgpQFJIs/s912/IMG_3014.JPG

The way the figure is connected to the base, as mentioned earlier, is one of the most horrible parts of the figure. There are only these really small transparant blocks where the "wheels" from her legs fit in. And that's it. No pegs or any other ways to keep her in there. The figure easily topples over with the slightest nudge and I was really happy when I had her on display after photographing, because then I knew I wouldn't have to touch her again for a while.

Bonus!

A big part of the fun of this figure for me was experimenting with making pictures of her. I had so much fun with trying to make "shadow play" pictures, that I decided to make a short video of it too! Enjoy!

This figure is just amazing when it comes to the athmosphere you can create with her especially through photography! Things like this make it easier for me to forgive her mistakes.

Summary or tl;dr

Positive
- A very unique character design to get a figure!
- The box, wow!!!!

Neutral
- I'm not completely sure about how safe the blisters are, or if I was just unlucky with mine.
- Some parts were sculpted and painted very well and others were pretty chunky or messy. This figure has lots of ups and downs.

Negative
- Hideous and huge base that barely keeps the figure up.

The Scores

Sculpting 7/10
Lots of small sculpting errors, especially her hair is a mess. Still, there are a lot of good parts too, such as her face, upper body and mechanical parts. Considering the price of this figure, the quality of the sculpting is probably quite a bit lower than most people would expect.

Painting 7/10
The same as with the sculpting, considering her price I would have expected more. Some small parts are pretty messy (such as her belt), but there are good things to point out too (such as her clothes and skin).

Posing 9/10
For a figure with such an unique body when it comes to proportions, the sculptor had a lot of limitations with her posing, especially when it comes to her legs. I think they did a great job coming up with an interesting pose that shows her off really well!

Base 3/10
Blegh, just blegh. I really can't give more than this for such a horrible base. It's huge and it's not safe for the figure. The reasons I gave it a 3 instead of a 1, is because I like the gradient colors on it and the size is just good enough to keep a figure with this big pose on it.

Packaging 10/10
Calne comes with an amazing box, that is sure to be imprinted in your memory! The size is huge though, so it's not easy to display.

Enjoyment 10/10
Even though she has her mistakes and the base is horrible, I'm still really excited about this figure! I never expected a figure of Deino's work to be made in the first place, so I'm happy she is a part of my collection!

Conclusion

Calne Ca has such an unique character design, that I recommend this figure to everyone interested in her! A downside is that her quality isn't that great considering her price, so if you like a figure from Deino's work in general and don't necessarily want Calne, it's maybe better to wait and see how the new figures from his characters ITEM #260969 , ITEM #261214 and ITEM #261527 turn out. It seems that Union Creative has been improving when it comes to quality, judging from the pictures and reviews I have seen from their recent Psycho-Pass figures!

Availability

Shortly after this figure was released, it got a huge price drop of over 30% off for a sealed copy. Then, slowly the market crawled up again. You can now find her for around her release price, sealed, in multiple stores such as HLJ www.hlj.com/pro... . When it comes to her original version ITEM #162401 it started off the same, with a big price drop and after that her going back to release price. Now with this version it is nowadays hard to find a new/sealed one, so you would probably have to go the pre-owned route. Both versions are pretty rare to be found pre-owned.

And to finish it!

Because Calne Ca's box was so pretty I thought: "Yes, I will display her box too!"

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-XsdqDYGGFAM/VHeHkzIL_EI/AAAAAAAACYg/jc6kgo07vmo/s912/IMG_3032.JPG

"Well okay, nevermind. Her box is way too big."

Currently I have my figures in storage, but here is how I used to display her in my collection!

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-PoeeOBcsVNk/VHeHmvzitKI/AAAAAAAACYo/Ys7AI0zoy-I/s912/IMG_3085.JPG

This was my work-in-progess horror shelf! When I will display her again I plan on making this shelf a lot more interesting!

For those who read all this way, thank you! Next up I will write a loot post about my recent Candysan loot and some small food reviews about the items inside! A new figure review can maybe take a while, as I'm currently busy with a new set-up for photography!

WolfiePie (1 year ago) #16659147You're so fast with replies! I always feel really slow. >w>;
Oh no! That sucks that they screwed up the insurance from devaluing! I feel like anything that gets shipped that is expensive, the seller should inquire what kind of insurance/shipping the buyer wants.
I always get notifications for things in Europe hahaha. I guess more people over where you are collect the stuff I like. XD
Yah, NH gets you with their property taxes and stuff. I don't think they tax addictables cause everyone goes over the state border to get alcohol.
I wish learning another language was a lot easier. But I'm a slow reader in English, so reading in another language (when I was in French class) took even longer. I recognize certain words and phrases, but I can't make coherent sentences.
Haha yah, it is similar to fighting games. The jojo games even give you lots of color variants to choose from. And Nurse Ca I'd definitely consider an alternate outfit/color variant. It's be cool to use her in a fighting game. XD

Most of the time I take a few days to reply? xD I know people on here that always respond within a few hours. :') Btw, let me know if I missed any of your messages to reply on! I got a lot of messages because of the last few blogs I put on here, so some things got a bit lost in notifications.

In most countries it's a "gray area", but in some countries it's really illegal to declare different values. So most sellers don't even let you know they are willing to change the value on a shipment unless you specifically ask for it. Actually, my best friend (who sells a lot on eBay) advises against it to put in your listings you are okay with writing down another value. >.<

Hrmm, interesting. I do think that most Strike Witches items I get notifications of, are sold in Europe, especially the southern countries of Europe. The more generic/popular figures on my wishlist always give me notifications for US sales. Maybe mecha musume is more of a thing here, hrmm. I at least don't notice it at my local conventions. I have been seeing a few Kan Colle cosplayers, though.

I have been calculating a lot and I think I will soon start with tanking gas for my car in Germany (and take extra cans with me of course, to tank full with more gas to refill at home >.<). First I'll wait it out if I get an extension of my working contract, because the jerrycans are actually quite an investment (I want to tank enough to only need to do a trip to Germany once a month).

Same for me! Would love to learn more languages, but I'm just so bad in picking it up and you need to keep on practicing... In our country it is mandatory to learn German, French and English in high school, with the possibility to learn Spanish or Chinese if you are one of the better ranking students. I always had a really hard time with both German and French. English I mainly learned from books, tv and games, so I only had to study for grammar, haha! When I was in college, I took Japanese classes for a year, but forgot most of it by now. ^^''

You did try to learn French for multiple years in high school or college?

The Jojo games always looked like fun, even before I looked a bit at the anime and other merchandise from the series!

Oh yes, Calne would be such an amazing design for a game! I would also love to see her in an action game. Her design works perfectly for that! <3

Maakie (1 year ago) #16546879Haha, no problem! I btw already answered on your PM. It's a long wall of text just like every other time, so take your time to read and reply, lol!
Well for me it happened the other way around, with an seller without me asking for it, delvalueing a package and actually screwing up my own insurance because of it! >.< And tell me about it as an European, haha! We only have a handful of stores to choose from if we decide we want to buy from a place that undervalues. When I sell: When a buyer asks it, for me that means they take full responsibility. If I sell something to someone and he/she doesn't give any special request I just put down the full worth price.
Huh what?! I know MFC is originally from Europe, but I swear I see way more US people trading/selling/buying than European ones?! I have to skip a lot of good deals on here, because of people living too far away. :(
Ahhh like that. A lot of northern European countries have crazy taxes on luxury and/or addictive items like alcohol and cigarettes. So they earn the most money on that, haha! Here in the Netherlands our taxes are extraordinary high on car-related things. Like gas, road tax and tax on owning an car (you pay for the specific weight your car has, it's pretty weird over here).
The only reason why I can speak English is because I have been watching TV and playing games in English from a very young age (our country is so small that a lot of media doesn't get translations/dubs). Every language I tried to learn at an later age (French, German, Spanish, Japanese) I failed horribly in and gave up after either a few years or sometimes a few months. :P I would love to learn a 3rd language, especially German would be useful now, but it's just too frustrating for me.
Hehe, reminds me of the (older) fighting game characters! I had been thinking for a long time to do a color variant of Lilith when I was planning her costume. Ended up still going for the 'normal' red-blue one, haha! But for Calne you could say I'm doing a "color variant" with her nurse colorway. :)

WolfiePie (1 year ago) #16475268I will answer it today after this one! I'm so slow I'm sorryyyyyy. X'D
Yah, the markdowns on packages does affect the price insurance will give you if the package is lost/damaged, but that's the risk buyers take. I'd rather have an over-seas buyer tell me what they want to have me mark it as, and have that be the price they're willing to "risk" on it. Sometimes sellers don't give you the option to choose the package mark price (like those Humikane art books I got. Nothing happened but the Japanese seller wrote a lower value so they wouldn't have to pay customs as much, and I only paid $9 shipping on ebay).
Hmm that really stinks though that you have to raise prices because of the high import tax. That trade agreement would be incredibly helpful to have. It's just a bummer cause MFC is European-based so most of the sellers are there, so as an American I see the price and get bummed out. XP
In New Hampshire they get you on property tax. So it's very expensive to live there, but cheap to shop there.
Oh gosh I'm terrible with languages. I don't think I'd be able to wrap my head around German. I have enough trouble with American English and it's stupid pronunciations, and it's the only language I know. X'D
Oh yuck! I would be livid if I got bootlegs in a grab bag. D: So yah, I guess stick to reputable dealers and stores.
I do like the white/grey coloration, but there's something appealing about a giant pink cat man to me. XD I haven't bought my morph suit yet, so I'm still contemplating colors for him. The good part about JJBA is that there are so many color variants that are official, so you have a lot of colors to choose from for any given character, merch included.

Maakie (1 year ago) #16241691Np, also take your time on my 10,000 pages PM I send you, haha!
Weeeeeeeeeell, undervalueing means also that the insurance is crooked. xD When something gets shipped insured, the item(s) inside are insured up to the value that is left on the form. So if you ask a store to put $10 on a package worth $100 and the package gets lost/damaged, they will only give you $10 back. ^^''
I think the big difference (and also problem lol) is that in most European countries there are high taxes on almost everything, including packages. So we're also expected to pay taxes on almost every item we import ourselves. Pretty tiring... Can you imagine our figure stores? Base price + shipping from JP to EU + taxes and other base fees + high taxes for selling within own country + a markup of course, otherwise they won't make any money. D:
That trade agreement would also save lots of time! No more packages getting inspected for weeks in a row!
No sales tax in New Hampshire?! But...how does the government make money there?! Only taxes on wages or something?
Yeah, I like going to Germany a lot. :) I'm pretty jealous on that country compared to my own, haha! Because a lot of things are similar, but in a way better way than the same things are over here in the Netherlands. But the thing really holding me back to visit more and/or think about moving there is the language...it's so hard to understand and I'm really bad at learning new languages. :(
I don't buy much grab bags from local conventions, main reason for them is that a lot of sellers try to dump bootlegs or really low value items in them. I DO love grab bags myself, but only want to buy them from trustworthy stores, such as a lot of the Japanese stores that do them too. Or con grab bags with foods/drinks only. I also have a small addiction to AmiAmi grab bags. xD
Hrmmm, I think I personally like him more in white/grey, but I understand the original color being the one most interesting/accostumed to you as a fan of the series! ;)
Interesting! I already had the idea that Jojo was a lot bigger in JP and the US. And that's good news for you! Lots of fun people to meet and nice merch to see/buy! :)

WolfiePie (1 year ago) #16196832Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. XP
I don't really see undervaluing as a bad thing, as long as there's enough insurance on the package to cover it if something goes wrong. But then again we don't pay taxes over here for our mail. For example, BJDs are usually marked down by companies on the customs form. It'll be like "Doll- $100" when you ordered a $500+ doll. Or even the mechamusume books I just got, I spent around $50 for them and the package arrived saying "used books- $20". But as long as expensive things are insured properly, I don't see a huge problem in undervaluing, but that's just my view on it as someone from the US.
Hopefully that trade agreement will go through. That'll be really handy!
That's like me shopping over the state border in New Hampshire for things, cause they don't have a sales tax. So buying groceries and stuff is cheaper, I guess like you going to Germany.
Grab bags are a pretty cool way to get rid of things that don't sell. I just get nervous about them cause I don't wanna end up with too much stuff I don't want either. XD Some vendors write a "theme" on the grab bag, like "action", "mecha", "kawaii" and stuff like that, or sometimes even specific titles. That way people can at least narrow it down to something they like for the most part.
The figure is a color approved by the mangaka, so it's technically an official coloration. But the character is originally a light pink, so I'd rather cosplay the original coloration of him. This is the color he's most often portrayed as: ITEM #11501
JoJo is actually really popular over here, as far as it's loyal fan base is concerned. We have really big cosplay groups for it. I'd honestly say some photoshoots are on-par with things like Sailor Moon and Attack on Titan, depending on the convention. I never really notice things until i get into them, but now that I'm in the JoJo cosplay group, I notice a lot more merch and cosplayers than before. There are definitely a few booths (usually ones that also carry Gundam and Zoids) that will have the JoJo figures.

Maakie (1 year ago) #15829619Wellllllllll, there is undervalueing. But that is tax evasion. You see a big split here in people. Half of our figure collectors will scream at the idea and risk of undervalueing and the other half are easily talking about how to do these tax evasions. :P
Also, for like 3 or more years already, there has been talking about a trading agreement between Japan and Europe. If at some point they finally accept that, it would mean no taxes or only taxes for really expensive shipments. I hope they finally make a decision about that in...hopefully not much longer, haha!
Hehe, what we see over here is that sales taxes in Germany are way lower than sales taxes in the Netherlands. So people hop the border to tank gas and especially buy luxury items (cigarettes, alcohol etc.). I also have some coworkers who are completely set on doing all their groceries in Germany!
Uh-huh! For sure! You can see with some of the items I had in my store or on a comment page for sale here. That it sometimes took me 1-2 years before I could stripe them off as "sold". :P But I also have some things NOBODY buys, those end up in my own grab bags I sell at my stand. :)
Oh, I would guess the character was more greyish white looking at the figure yeah, haha! You don't prefer that color version?
Jojo is over here not that big of a hit, but every few cons I see some cosplayers from it, so at least it's not really niche or something. ;) But our vendors don't stock up big on Jojo. They mainly go for "safe" series that (seem to) never lose their popularity, like Vocaloid and Pokémon.

WolfiePie (1 year ago) #15761275Aww, that really stinks. Yah, I wish there was a way to avoid customs fees. I have had people ask for me to mark the value lower, which I don't have a problem with as long as they're willing to take the consequences if it gets damaged in the mail. And I do agree, second-hand should be similar to a thrift store or something. It's already been bought once (or more) before, so extra fees shouldn't apply. But over here we have certain states that have sales taxes or no sales taxes. So we have sales tax in Massachusetts, so I tend to go over the state border into New Hampshire so I can avoid the tax. But this is more for buying things in-person.
I can see niche items being hard to sell. But there are definitely people out there who'd buy them. It just takes longer to find them. XP
Yep! I've already started looking into morph suits on Amazon. Currently debating between "peach" or "pink" for the suit color (the figure I posted is an alternate color version).
I didn't get into JoJo until after Anime Boston this year (so March/April), but I always see tons of JoJo figures there. So there's a good chance multiple vendors could have him next year, especially with the rerelease. But then there's the supply-and-demand and "popularity price" mark-ups, so he could end up costing way more in person. XP

Maakie (1 year ago) #15742871For me the other way around. I see a good deal from an US or JP seller and then get disheartened if I think about the shipping and total costs after all the fees. D: Btw I think it's really stupid that custom fees still apply on second hand items to be honest. If needed, the taxes should have been paid the first time the item was sold. :/
I only manage to sell my small and really rare items to people outside of Europe and even then it can take a long time to sell them, but I also blame the items I mainly sell and collect being so niche. :P
Woah! How are you planning to cosplay him?! Full body suit?

WolfiePie (1 year ago) #15695672Yah, European prices do look crazy high lol. I get excited to see things on my wanted list posted on here, but as soon as I find it's a European seller I get disheartened cause they ask for a lot more than US sellers. I have nothing against European sellers, but I'd rather just deal with USD and no mark-ups. XP
I can see it's be easier to buy within Europe for you cause you can avoid the crazy customs that way, so that's pretty helpful for EU collectors. It just makes it hard for us to buy from each other. XD
My next planned cosplay is Killer Queen from JJBA. This is the figure I'm eyeballing: ITEM #27980 He's getting a rerelease and I'm tempted to join the preorder, but I'm also not sure I'd just be better off waiting and trying to find him in-person at a convention. XP

Maakie (1 year ago) #15692557Well normally the taxes are for the receiver, but I guess that because this was a "false declaration" the seller ended up in trouble instead of me. :x
Yeah for someone in the US, all the European prizes must look crazy. When I import a figure from Japan and get all the extra fees, I end up paying 90-100% of the price of buying it from an European reseller, like Archonia. Also, buying form Japan yourself makes you have the figure quicker. So I always go for importing myself, although a lot of Europeans rather play it safe and just buy from our own stores (they don't like the hassle with customs).
Yeah, trying to get back your shipping costs is a bit stupid, but I can understand European sellers to try and also get a part of their custom fees back. Still, the most nice would be of course to take the release price and take a bit off that, considering you opened the figure. But yeah, with huge EMS figures and high customs, that can be very hard on European sellers. :P Still, as an European buyer, I'm cheaper off buying such an "overpriced second hand" figure from another European collector, than importing the figure myself from Japan. But for people living in countries with no or low taxes on packages, all European prices (also from shops) must look like scalping, lol.
Which is your next planned cosplay? :>

XP

About this blog

Welcome to my figure-blog!

I mostly write reviews for this blog, since I like to read and write those kind of articles the most! I also think of them as very useful for other collectors and Japan enthusiasts!

Next to that, I also write tutorials for GK's, loot blogs, cosplay and convention-related articles and guides for hobby-related subjects...just take a look! :)

I hope you enjoy my articles and feel free to rate and leave comments! \^o^/
