iFuRyu Sakura Kinomoto "Lovely Kitten"8.33/10    Readers' selection (2015-04-03)

Today, we'll be reviewing a figure which I've really been anticipating, FuRyu's latest figure of Sakura Kinomoto, dubbed the "Lovely Kitten".

About the character: Sakura Kinomoto is the title character from the much-beloved Card Captor Sakura anime. Sakura is a seemingly ordinary young girl who stumbles on an arcane book bearing the name "The Clow" in her father's library. The book contains a set of tarot cards, and when Sakura reads aloud the name of one of the cards (the Windy), the cards scatter to the wind. Keroberos, the guardian beast of the Clow, emerges and proclaims Sakura the card captor, tasking her with the retrieval of the Clow cards.

Packaging----------8/10

With a Sakura figure, one has to expect the dominant color of the box will be pink, and FuRyu does not disappoint.

Both sides are identical, and they feature a cute illustration of Sakura. If you live in North America and you collected the Pioneer DVD's of CCS, you might recall that this illustration was also the cover of volume 3 of the DVD. I distinctly remember buying that particular DVD volume at a Babbage's of all places (remember them, US MFC'ers?); that was just other day...looks at the DVD case...back in the year 2000...

Sakura doesn't require much in the way of set up. However, like with many FuRyu figures, Sakura's blister doesn't snap together. Rather, the two pieces of the blister are merely taped together, and so Kero-chan could come tumbling out if you're not careful opening it. Poor Kero...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757621.jpeg

The two different size pegs in her foot makes it clear how Sakura is supposed to attach to the base.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757623.jpeg

Kero just slips over Sakura's arm.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757625.jpeg

At first, I wasn't too sure if this method of attaching him would work, but Kero seems to stay in place well enough.

Set up and ready to go!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757678.jpeg

The box measures 17 by 23 by 17 cm and the package weighs around 330 grams, so it shouldn't cost a fortune to ship Sakura.

Posing----------8.5/10

Sakura's outfit was seen in episode 8 of the series ("Sakura's Rival Appears"), where Syaoran Li made his formal debut. Sakura is kind of down in the dumps during that episode (Li spends quite a bit of time criticizing her card-capturing skills), but she seems pretty happy anyway. That's fine with me, since cheerfulness is Sakura's invincible power.

Let's take a look at her.

The pose is fairly energetic, and I like how Kero is clinging to Sakura's arm, so there are no complaints here.

Sculpting----------9/10*
Painting----------8/10*

*---these ratings reflect the fact this is an inexpensive prize figure, and represent ratings relative to other prize figures.

While she has some issues that are to be expected on a cheap prize figure, FuRyu did quite a few things right on this figure. In particular, her face turned out really nice. This is probably the cutest Sakura-chan I've seen to date!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757730.jpeg

Another huge plus of this figure is the simple fact that FuRyu found a way to incorporate Kero-chan into its design.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757732.jpeg

The sculpting on Kero's wings and tail is not quite perfect, but neither are there any huge glaring flaws there.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757773.jpeg

You can see a couple of messy spots in Sakura's hair. The painting on her ahoge is a little uneven, too.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757775.jpeg

I like how her cat ears are fuzzy on the inside. Tomoyo lovingly designs all of Sakura's battle costumes after all, and you can count on her to include all these little details!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757777.jpeg

Even though Sakura has short hair, I like that she doesn't just have a helmet-head. Her slightly messy hair is also very cute.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757779.jpeg

In episode 8, the THUNDER card is running amok, and so luckily enough Tomoyo just happened to make Sakura's dress and shoes out of rubber. Also, she gave Kero a bell to wear, matching Sakura's bell. Thus, it's too bad he doesn't have his own bell to wear in this figure. In any event, the cat ears and Sakura's natural genki disposition is a formidable force!

I also like the subtle shading on Sakura's dress. It would have been easy to just give it a flat finish, so FuRyu deserves some kudos here.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757781.jpeg

The finish on the bell is okay, but that attachment point makes me a little nervous...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757813.jpeg

I was pleasantly surprised to see how well done the frill around the bottom of her skirt was; its finish is neither sloppy nor chunky in any way.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757815.jpeg

That huge bow, the cat tail, and the bells are all pointed out by Kero as part of the "Kero-chan check!" segment of this episode.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757817.jpeg

You can see a couple of spots where some excess black paint made its way onto the bow.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757819.jpeg

This spot where some pink paint spills onto her collar is about the worst painting defect I could find.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757821.jpeg

The finish on the bells was better than I expected.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757865.jpeg

On mine, the edges of her sleeves were just a little bit rough in places.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757867.jpeg

The painting on her staff is pretty crisp for the most part.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757869.jpeg

A couple more spots of black paint from somewhere.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757871.jpeg

The puffy bloomers complement the rest of the outfit nicely. However, the paint color of her leggings seems flatter and greyer than it should be. Maybe I'm just getting picky...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757873.jpeg

I like the buttons on the sides of her boots, but the painting is slightly sloppy in a couple of places.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757918.jpeg

Base----------7/10

The base is nothing special, but at least it's not huge and it doesn't detract from the figure. The base measures in at 10 cm (4 inches) in diameter. The prototype shots of this figure showed a pink base that was much thinner, and that would have complemented the figure much better IMO.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757920.jpeg

Scale Comparison

Cat ears and base included, Sakura is just over 7 inches (18 cm) tall, and taking into account the fact she's leaning forward slightly, I'd estimate Sakura herself is also about 7 inches (18 cm) tall. Her canon height ranges from 138 to 143 cm (Tomoyo notices that she goes through a growth spurt at one point in the show), and so I'd say Sakura is approximately 1/8 scale.

FuRyu's first Sakura offering item #183247 is pretty much the same in terms of scale, but they did a much better job with the sculpt of the newer Sakura's face!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427757966.jpeg

Tomoyo item #1080 fawning over Sakura, as she is known to do...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427758009.jpeg

The previous shot uses a little forced perspective, since as you can see that Tomoyo figure is much larger than Sakura.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427758011.jpeg

Card Captor Sakura is a family-friendly anime, while Yuki Katase item #39772 originally hails from a gal-game, but Yuki and Sakura definitely have some similar features. In any event, I like how they look together. Yuki is 1/7 scale for comparison.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427758047.jpeg

Kotobukiya's Maryan item #61395 is a petite 1/8 scale for comparison.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1427758163.jpeg

Sakura with another well-known mahou shoujo, Alter's 1/7 Nanoha item #141879 .

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9.5/10

Arguments for: Cute face, including Kero-chan is a huge plus, surprisingly good overall finish, and we can never have enough Sakura figures, can we?

Arguments against: Not too many. The biggest culprit is probably the rather bland base.

CCS has long been one of my favorite anime, and the fact that the previous FuRyu Sakura turned out nice made this figure a no-brainer purchase, particularly considering her low price. Thus, if you are a Sakura fan, I can think of no good reason not to have this figure in your collection.

The only question is how many of Sakura's battle costumes will FuRyu eventually realize in figure form. If I got to choose, I'd get cracking on her fairy outfit from episode 12 (when the TIME card was captured-one of my favorite episodes!) or her outfit from episode 7 with the cute bat wings. Do you suppose FuRyu would eventually make figures of all her battle costumes? Probably not, but if so FuRyu, I accept your challenge!!

Availability (as of this writing)

Still available new.

As I write this, it looks like she can still be found at HLJ and AmiAmi. If you decide to go the pre-owned route, the earlier FuRyu Sakura, while not uncommon, is not quite as omnipresent as other prizes (Sakura is pretty popular after all), so it might take just a little patience to track one down.

Hopefully, you'll have your Sakura soon. I wonder if Koto will eventually make a Tomoyo or a Meilin? Those two need more figures...

Maakie (2 years ago) #2859992This will maybe sound weird, but by seeing this figure from up close, I realised how "retro" looking this outfit from Sakura is. :') I never thought that before with my item #4182 !
Anyway nice review! They definitely made a lot better face!

The retro feeling could just be nostalgia. When I went back to see when the volume of the DVD with the episode featuring this costume got published, I could hardly believe it was 15 years ago!

MrsRococo (2 years ago) #2858307Can't forget our Kotobukiya babies either!! item #236142 & item #236143 -- Our poor wallets, hahaha.

Well, my goal is to try to pick them up via their US release, since Koto figures are usually cheaper that way. Unless of course, the current favorable USD-Yen exchange rate looks like it's here to stay for a while...

victorviper (2 years ago) #2858199$15 is really a fantastic bargain for this figure. item #263957 is next in the queue, and her face is so cute in the promo shots, so I hope the finished product is just as good. item #270949 will hopefully ship in May, and item #218618 is also scheduled for June, so barring delays, the next couple months should be Sakura-tastic!
