Eva Exhibition Set

MoroMoro2 years agoReview
Hello! By popular demand, today I’m bringing you a review of the full set of Sawada Kobo Production Evangelion Exhibition/Eva Store exclusive figures!

Initially these little figures were only available to buy at the Evangelion Exhibition, but later went up for preorder on the Eva Store. Ayanami Rei was made way before the others, and I bought her right away, so I was beyond delighted when the rest of the set was made and ordered them as soon as I was able to. Nowhere else picked them up, so if you didn’t go to the Eva Exhibition and buy them there, or order them from the Eva Store (required forwarding or proxy) you would have to wait for the secondary market.

Because they are so small, they didn’t show up well in my normal display case. Therefore, I created a special display just for them. In terms of placement I have displayed the set to match the illustration. But before I show you the special display, let’s take a look at each of these wonderful little figures one at a time. I've seen complaints about their quality, and I won't pretend they are flawless, but I love them anyway.

These figures were directly based on this illustration, which featured prominently in the Evangelion Exhibition:

So, let’s go in order based on the illustration, starting with Asuka. I love them all, but Asuka might be the best of them.

Her hair swirls about her so beautifully, framing her face—despite the small size of the figure, almost all the strands from the illustration are there. Her peaceful appearance is a strong contrast to her usual demeanor.

Next comes Kaworu.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Moro1430102437.jpeg

He has a soft curve from his spine to his long legs—I’d say the figure has slightly shapelier hips than the illustration, actually. Not a bad thing if you ask me! There are several Q-Kaworu figures and his messy, spiny hair is a little bit difficult to capture but this figure simplified it and softened it. It looks densely fluffy rather than spiked and I like it better this way.

Shinji is sadly the weakest of the set. I saw multiple complaints of crooked eye decals and it's unfortunately the case with mine, but it thankfully isn't all that noticeable unless you are up close.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Moro1430102678.jpeg

His hair is very simple, not much to look at. Like Kaworu, Shinji has softly shaped hips and long legs.

After Shinji comes Rei. Of all of the set, I think she is the most faithful to the illustration.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Moro1430102795.jpeg

Every strand of hair, every line of her body, it was translated very directly from 2D to 3D. Of course, Rei being the way she is, I think she is also most suited to this appearance. Unconscious or asleep, floating in a tank of LCL. She looks so beautifully delicate, so vulnerable. I couldn’t ask for better.

Last is Mari. Having her on the opposite end like this is very visually pleasing, because the set is bookended by the girls with longer, flowing hair.

Mari is the curviest of the girls and you can tell, especially next to Rei. We’ve never seen her look this serene, but here she is, unconscious or asleep like all the other pilots.

Here's how they look all lined up together!
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Moro1430103056.jpeg
Their stands, as you've seen, are small and nothing special, just plain white with “Evangelion” embossed on the bottom. It’s easy to put the figures on their stands (a tiny hole in their backs), though they will sway a bit after you’ve touched them. They aren’t necessarily easy to knock over, but I think a solid whack to whatever they were sitting on could easily make them topple. Don’t put them exposed somewhere the surface could get whacked, or if you have cats, or live somewhere with earthquakes.
I didn't take any shots of the boxes, but their boxes are actually quite nice. Each one has that character’s part of the illustration on the back, so the boxes look nice lined up together too.

Now then, now that I’ve shown off the figures individually, time for the pièce de résistance, my special display!

When I first saw the illustration these figures are based on, I immediately thought of them all floating unconscious in a tank of LCL, especially since a special, much larger version of the Rei figure was displayed floating in a tube at the Evangelion Exhibition. So I converted a special case into a tank of LCL! The front of the case was left clear for maximum visibility without compromising the effect. I was able to replicate the slight differences in elevation between characters without risers simply by positioning. (Please click these pictures if you want a better look, they don't quite seem to fit here.) The final result:

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Moro1430103062.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Moro1430103058.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Moro1430103060.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Moro1430103228.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Moro1430103302.jpeg

Now, the question many of you have asked in the comments on these various figures—should you buy them? (They can all be bought on the Eva Store still, except for Rei, who you'll have to find elsewhere.)
I'll try to approach it in more objective terms. If you’re a more casual Evangelion fan, you probably won’t find these to be worth getting. They are very small, they are not perfect. They are very different too.
I’d have to say I definitely do recommend them to hardcore fans who are looking for some Eva figures that stand out from the rest. I bought Rei when she was the only one, but I think it's most worthwhile to get the full set if you want them.
I also think it does need its own display, even if it’s just dedicating a small shelf to them by themselves. They are so small that they tend to get lost amid larger figures.
Thanks for reading!

Moro (2 years ago) #2945216His pose does match the illustration, though. I think because he's in the center his is supposed to be more static as a sort of pivot point for the other characters. But it's true that he's just less impressive than the other characters in the set. I'm fine with mine, anyway.
I actually experimented with some fishing line (temporary holds with masking tape) but it was actually still pretty conspicuous, because it would have required multiple pieces of line to keep the figures perfectly vertical and in the right place. I'd most likely have to affix the fishing line both from above and below the figures. And keeping that in place would also require drilling into the case, which I really don't want to do.

Yeah, you were pretty lucky with your copy as I've seen ones with really bad faces. xD To me Asuka (in a good way) and Shinji (in a bad way) stand out in this set. :)

Ah yes, driling into the case was also what I meant. Make small holes and tie the fishing wire/transparant thread inbetween there. I guess the best points would be to have 2 strings each figure from their shoulders to underneath their armpits. But that makes a lot of wires/threads, which probably looks bleh op close, but good form a distance.

Maakie (2 years ago) #2945210Asuka is defenitely the prettiest of them all! <3 I like how they made the full set, but I'm going to be honest here and say that I think Shinji is quite meh compared to the rest. Especially his posing is so static. The others are also eyes closed unconscious, but all have some sort of movement in legs and/or arms while Shinji looks just as plank from the front (from the side he looks a lot better). But from what I read elsewhere too, he seems to be the worst from the set, so here I think you have to be glad you didn't get one with a crooked face. xD
I really like the costum display you made and I also thought of what one of the users below me said about changing the colors of the bases. Orrrrrr maybe you could look into letting them hang from your display with transparant wire and just ditch the bases? I don't think they are really heavy considering their size?

toryyy (2 years ago) #2942945I'll be expecting this!
I would like to get this whole set eventually, I think they look darling even if the quality isn't the best. We most likely won't get any more Eva figures with this concept.
Not a fan of Mari, though. Will still get her.
Heh, I give you new expectations every time I talk to you.
They really are worth it IMO, flaws and all. And it's true we aren't likely to get any others with the same concept.

Moro (2 years ago) #2940459I actually considered fabricating individual tubes as well, but decided a whole tank would look more cohesive. Still, I can think of a way to make such a picture... you're giving me ideas! You're the worst Eva enabler :O

tomoko (2 years ago) #2942193Wow thank you so much for reviewing them! They're such beautiful figures, I wish I bought them. They look like they're all so peaceful and floating in LCL.. Great review once again : ) You're welcome, I'm glad people are liking it! I think this set is a bit under-appreciated honestly. With a bit of attention, they really shine and stand out despite being so small. Thanks~

Drew (2 years ago) #2942119Been wondering how you intended to display these and the thought of referencing LCL tubes hadn't occurred to me, well done! Hopefully get round to doing something with mine someday. Thanks! Ah, I'm glad to see that you also bought the full set :D I've got some kind of obsession with LCL, it's a sickness o wo; If you do make a special display for yours you should definitely take some pictures.

Celestrial (2 years ago) #2941558Thanks so much for doing this review Moro ^__^ I have been debating for so long if i should pick these ones up or not...i am still not sure haha. I think the main thing that bugs me is the size, i love the original artwork so much and they do look fantastic, but the size and those white stands ( why they are not clear is beyond me ) still bug me. The display you made for them look AMAZING though, if i could replicate something like that i might be more compelled to get them. Or even with a blue background that represents 3.0 ( much like i did with my EVA RAH case ) might look super awesome.
Thanks again for the in depth review !!
They really are lovely, despite being so small and having the opaque stands. I agree the stands definitely should have been clear. But I don't find them bothersome. Maybe it's just that love is blind |D
Ooh, a Q blue display would look good too. Your RAH display looks fantastic so I'm sure you could do something similarly nice with this set. Also, you could probably paint the stands the same blue and have it work. I didn't paint the stands orange on mind because it made them stand out even more, but it's different with cool colors.
