Yamato 1/6 Tandem Twin Alma

Taste in figures, as with all things, changes over time. Today we'll be reviewing a figure that I *could* have picked up new when I first got started collecting. However, I didn't buy her new since she's a little bit on the ecchi side, and she wouldn't have fit in with the rest of my collection back then.

But that was then, and this is now, and so we'll be taking a look at one of the figures from Yamato's "Tandem Twin" line, namely Dog Girl Alma. She's pretty dominatrixey and she has some cast-off features, so if that's an issue, I'd hit the back button...

About this figure: Tandem Twin was a series of finished figures released by Yamato between 2006 and 2008. It looks like a couple more figures in the line were planned but were never released (see ITEM #31885 and ITEM #31886). Generally, all the figures in this line have kemonomimi features, and Alma's features bring to mind a doberman pinscher, meant presumably to reflect her aggressive and dominant personality.

Now on to the review.

Packaging----------8/10

The black and red color scheme of the box is distinctive, and the eyelets and lacing bring to mind some of the bondagey aspects of this figure.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434234934.jpeg

I like the black and white illustrations of the figure which grace the sides of the box. It's not too obvious if these are drawings of the figure, or if someone at Yamato digitally altered a photo of the figure. I think it's the latter...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434234936.jpeg

The back of the box features two large photos of the figure.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434234938.jpeg

This is definitely not a toy. Got it?!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434234940.jpeg

Alma is packed inside a three-layer blister. After the top layer is removed, there is a "tray" inside which keeps her whip and shades in the proper place. There was also something I didn't expect down there in the lower right corner of the blister...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434234942.jpeg

Alma unpacked.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235006.jpeg

That extra little piece is part of one of the cuffs Alma wears on her biceps. The figure was sealed, and so it looks like that the glue on that piece just gave out after seven years sitting in the box.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235008.jpeg

Fortunately, a little superglue fixed that up easily enough.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235010.jpeg

Once her whip is uncoiled and set in place, she's ready to dish out some discipline!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235012.jpeg

Alma is quite a large and heavy figure, and the box is accordingly big and heavy. It measures 36 by 20 by 13 cm, and the whole package weighs just over 800 grams, so factor that into your shipping calculations if you're hunting this figure.

Posing----------9.5/10

Alma's pose perfectly reflects her dominatrix persona. Her body language (the way she's holding her arms in particular) means that she looks pretty serious about whatever is about to happen.

Let's have a look at her.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235061.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235063.jpeg

From this angle, it doesn't look like she's playing around!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235065.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235067.jpeg

Sculpting----------7.5/10
Painting----------8.5/10

For an older figure, Alma's finish is generally good. She does have a couple of pretty serious flaws on the sculpting front, but on the other hand the paintwork is pretty solid, especially considering that her outfit has many intricate little details.

Alma's facial expression is pretty interesting, especially when she's viewed slightly below eye level (maybe better described as "grovelling at her feet level" ? XD ). She looks like she really means business, doesn't she?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235124.jpeg

Viewed from eye level, her hair gets in her face a little bit.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235126.jpeg

Viewed from this angle, her expression seems to change subtly. It's almost like she's smirking at whoever is about to be on the receiving end of her whip.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235128.jpeg

If you want to display Alma wearing her sunglasses, first her head will need to be removed.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235130.jpeg

Her spiky collar can be removed, and she's wearing a less elaborate red collar underneath that one.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235132.jpeg

She can certainly be displayed just fine this way, but I think the spiky collar is a key feature of her design.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235172.jpeg

To set her sunglasses in place, first the front part of her bangs will need to be removed. My figure had been sealed since 2008, and it took quite a lot of force to remove her bangs!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235174.jpeg

I can't quite make up my mind about her sunglasses. They certainly make her look cool...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235176.jpeg

...but the glasses are also very opaque, so they are more like a blindfold. After going back and forth, I ultimately decided to go with the glasses when placing her on display, but she looks just fine with or without them. They really do add to the cool factor of the figure though!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235178.jpeg

Alma's pointed ears do certainly bring to mind the image of a Doberman.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235180.jpeg

One interesting feature of this figure is that there are a lot of sharp angles (the cuffs on her biceps, and all the various spikes on her outfit), and I like the very harsh and sharp sculpt of her hair. That bold color gradient is hard to miss, and this combination of factors really makes her stand out on the shelf!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235251.jpeg

There are an awful lot of little painting details on this figure, and in the shot below, you can see some flaws. The painting on the spikes is a little sloppy in spots, as is the trim on her collar as well as the gold trim on her breastplate.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235255.jpeg

There's a seam line on her sleeve that's pretty obvious.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235257.jpeg

On the other hand, there are many, many interesting details to be found when looking at her outfit. The raised metal trim, the studs, and the sharp angles in the design are pretty neat!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235259.jpeg

Another unmistakeable feature of this figure is Alma's pointy breasts! You could put your eye out with one of those ;).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235431.jpeg

The back of her outfit also has plenty of interesting features. The pyramidal studs are quite neat, and the slightly distressed brass finish on her bicep cuffs is a cool subtle feature. It gives the impression that this outfit has seen its share of wear and tear!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235433.jpeg

One thing that is not totally obvious to me is if Alma is actually a dog-girl, or if she is a human cosplaying as a dog. If it's the former, it must have been really difficult to put on this outfit and get that metal cap situated just right over her tail!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235435.jpeg

There's a nasty seam running up the side of hip.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235437.jpeg

Another similar flaw on her other hip.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235439.jpeg

Low angle shot. Alma is wearing a thong, but it kind of disappears in there...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235578.jpeg

Yet another interesting feature of this figure can be seen on the top of her boots. The tops are obviously supposed to be made of metal, yet they resemble bows.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235580.jpeg

Her brass thigh straps have a very busy design, with a combination of brass, silver, flat black and pewter elements! Those straps really draw the eye in person.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235582.jpeg

The design of her gauntlets is also quite busy. The bright red color of her fingernails is certainly appropriate, as it adds a diva-esque touch to the figure. One small complaint is it is somewhat difficult to get the whip placed in her hand; it wants to slip out if her hand if it's not placed just so.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235584.jpeg

I'm guessing that metal tip on Alma's whip means this would sting like hell! She'd have to be really careful when wielding this so as not to cause any serious injury to her submissive...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235586.jpeg

The way two thick pieces of material come together around her crotch area suggests a heavy leather material. The low-rise design of her bottoms is quite sexy!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235634.jpeg

Her boots are very detailed. Yamato opts to simulate the appearance of lacing by carving an intricate design into the front of the boots. Together with all of the metal elements, these could be taken right from Gene Simmons' wardrobe!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235638.jpeg

The boots show off her shapely calves nicely.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235640.jpeg

Alma's breastplate can be cast-off. The cast off shots reside behind the spoiler tag if you don't want to see this...

View spoilerHide spoiler

Removing the breastplate is quite simple. After removing her head and her collar, the breast piece lifts off.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235719.jpeg

Alma's breasts are plenty perky to begin with, and the rigid metal parts of her outfit amplify the effect by pushing them up and forward.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235721.jpeg

Alma's chest piece had presumably been on there since 2008, and as you can see it left just a little bit of paint transfer on her left breast...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235723.jpeg

...but to my surprise, it cleaned up quite easily with a Magic Eraser. Of course, YMMV, but I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of any substantial paint transfer.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235725.jpeg

You may have noticed that removing the breastplate leaves an ugly hole. There's a pin that presumably would hold the plate in place, and it ***might*** be possible remove it and hide that hole, but I wasn't going to risk it...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235727.jpeg

Base----------8/10

The base is simple but functional. The shiny black finish complements the figure without distracting from it. Further, although Alma is quite a large figure, the base is not that large. It's an ellipse with major and minor axes of 6 inches and 4.5 inches (15 cm/11.5 cm) respectively.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235761.jpeg

Scale Comparison

Alma is listed at 1/6 scale, and the measuring tape says that she's about 12 inches (30 cm) from head to toe, and her ears bring her total height to about 12.75 inches (32.5 cm). 1/6 scale would make her 6'0" (dog ears not included), which I suppose is not impossible, but I'd say she is really more like 1/5.5 scale.

Here is Alma together with one of my favorite (and largest!) figures, FREEing's 1/4 Kuroko Shirai ITEM #135060.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434238562.jpeg

Sonico's ITEM #198576 outfit is definitely bondage-inspired, and she complements Alma nicely. Sonico is pretty close to 1/6 scale, and you can see that Alma seems somewhat larger. Also note that compared to Sonico, Alma's skin tone is very tanned/bronzed. Bronze can easily turn to orange if not done carefully, but the bronzed effect certainly suits her.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235883.jpeg

Alma with another dominatrix-ey figure in my collection, Chara-Ani's Tira Misu ITEM #6512. Tira is 1/8 scale for comparison.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434235939.jpeg

Alma with another old figure that's one of my new favorites, Silfietta Lashia ITEM #1202 . Silfietta is 1/6 scale.

Behind the spoiler tag is a more cast-off version of the previous shot.View spoilerHide spoiler

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434238477.jpeg

Alma with a couple of my other favorite kemonomimi figures, Nono Nekomiya ITEM #209 and Nagi ITEM #4911. Nono is 1/6 scale, and Nagi is 1/7 for comparison.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1434238610.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9.5/10

Arguments for: A lot. Huge scale, cool box art, multiple display options (cast-off or not, with or without sunglasses), lots of detail in her outfit, and her pose definitely is in keeping with her dominatrix-ey persona.

Arguments against: Not many, unless you count the fact that once Alma is acquired, you might forced to hunt down her submissive partner Brenda/Bonnie (ITEM #1717 / ITEM #4291)!

I think I've made abundantly clear how much I enjoy this figure, and I wish I'd bought her a long time ago. Maybe the dominatrix theme is a little over the top, but if you need a really cool and sexy figure in your collection that's sure to draw the eye, I'd recommend Alma wholeheartedly.

Availability (as of this writing)

Not too hard too find, but not exactly common.

She's less common than I thought she was, as only 63 people on MFC claim to own this figure. With a little effort, you should be able to track one down, however. My A/B Alma cost me 4900 yen, which is quite a bargain as far as I'm concerned! All the figures in this line have color variants, and Alma is no exception. Her counterpart Annerose ITEM #740 has darker skin, and she wields a riding crop instead of a whip as her implement of choice.

victorviper (7 days ago) #29597125I figure the pin was removable, but this figure is sufficiently scarce these days that I didn't want to risk breaking a part.
Alma and Brenda are two of my favorite figures, and there were a few other figures from this Tandem Twin line which apparently got to the prototype phase, but never were produced. That's too bad...

Yeah I know. I assume the line did not do very well. Certainly not many people are aware of its existence.

Information on the series is super scarce. I would like to know more about what inspired these designs and what went on behind the scenes. Sadly, it just isn't out there.

CookieSkoon (7 days ago) #29589238This is one of my personal favorites, and the star of my small collection thus far.
I have her and Bonnie. Sadly, I lost Bonnie's chain collar in a move. ;-;
That pin on her breastplate... I tried to remove it when I first got her and I eventually got it out. The paint stuck it in there pretty good. It IS removable; however, after doing so I am entirely certain the struggle is not worth it and I have not removed it since.

victorviper (2 years ago) #3105530I was really surprised by the level of detail on the boots. Between the "lacing", the metal bows, the brass buttons, and the pieces on the top of her foot which simulate a dog's paw, there's a lor going on there!

Yeah, especially the "paws" look really amazing, but I was impressed at the knee "armor" too! :)

victorviper (2 years ago) #3103574Interesting. I guess I'd never really looked that close; maybe I'm gotten accustomed to figure variants being simple re-colorings. Although now, Annerose is on my wish list because she'd look really standing next to Alma!
Brenda is still sitting here next to my desk waiting to be unboxed. I guess I should get to it and have a proper look at her up close!

I love it when a variant is more than a simple re-coloring such as in this other lovely set: picture/1123899.... Besides different coloring, they have different hair styles and different weapons. And, just like is the case with Bonnie and Brenda, their heads can be switched, which adds another dimension of fun.

If you are only getting one, then Alma is the one to get, but once you have Alma, it makes sense to get Annerose as well for the "set" aspect. But it is a dangerous road to enter because once I started with one pair, I ended up getting a matching "twin" for all my other Tandem Twin girls as well. Now I know why they are called "Tandem Twins" :-)

loveanime (2 years ago) #3102857Many Tandem Twin variants differ not only in terms of color but also in terms of subtle details. For example, compared to Bonnie ITEM #4291, Brenda ITEM #1717 has an extra metal bar between her hands and metal balls tied to her feet. These two variants of Yamaneko ITEM #4394 and ITEM #1164 have different swords.

loveanime (2 years ago) #3100711While I am happy to own both, Alma is my favorite because Annerose's skin tone is "intense", more orange than brown. One benefit is that Annerose has a "low-cut" breast plate. They make a great pair or a great double pair with dog Brenda and dog Bonnie.

Hmm, I'd never really noticed that Annerose had a different style breastplate than Alma.

solluxcaptor (2 years ago) #3100817I love the art on the box, and this figure has some gorgeous details! Not quite my style, but I can appreciate it!

If you like to display figure boxes, the artwork on this figure (and her partner Bonnie/Brenda as well) is really cool and interesting.
