Sega "Gothic Night" Rei/Asuka

I like Evangelion. I like Rei and Asuka. I like figures. What this means is that when I see an inexpensive but interesting Rei/Asuka combo, more often than not it ends up on my shelf. So today, we'll be reviewing just such a pair of figures, Sega's "Gothic Night" figures of these two iconic characters.

About the characters: I think most everyone knows Rei and Asuka, so let's get right to it!!

Packaging----------7/10

Sega goes with a blister-card package for these figures. If you keep your figures in the packaging (and as we'll see, that might be an option for these figures even if you're not normally inclined to keep your figures sealed), this design allows a good view of the figure inside.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194160.jpeg

The back of the package is bland, as you might expect.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194162.jpeg

These are not small figures, but the package design does keep the weight down. Each package measures 31 by 18 by 11 cm and each weighs slightly more than 300 grams.

Posing----------7/10

Asuka's pose is fine, but as we'll see Rei's reclining pose makes for some real challenges in trying to display her. But, before we get to that, let's have a look at the lovely Asuka.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194327.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194329.jpeg

Asuka's pose is fine. In particular, the way she's flexing her fingers in front of her is perfectly in character, but you can probably see from these photos that the way she's got all of her weight on one leg gives her a little bit of a lean right out of the box and I worry that will only get worse over time.

Now, let's see what's going on with Rei. I certainly like the *concept* for the pose, as her reclining pose coupled with the way she's holding her arm over her head adds a sultry vibe to the figure.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194724.jpeg

However, the problem is that unless you view her from above, this is what she's going to look like. Even trying to display her on a low shelf doesn't help all that much since the figure has such a minimal vertical profile.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194726.jpeg

Thus, it's figure DIY time! First, I scavenged the unused pillow base that came with ITEM #27625. Then, I picked up a set of Ikea's DIODER LED strips not too long ago, and I still had the empty box sitting around which contained this little plastic insert.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194812.jpeg

The insert is about an inch to an inch and a quarter tall, and that's just enough to give some much needed depth to the figure!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194934.jpeg

So, the poses are fine, but you might have to get a little bit creative (or display her in the package) when displaying Rei.

*---these ratings take into account the fact these are inexpensive prize figures and represent ratings relative to other prize figures.

For prize figures (ones made in 2009 no less!), generally Rei and Asuka turned out quite nice finish-wise. They have a few issues that are common with prize figures, but Sega did a few things extremely well with this pair of figures.

First, Sega's rendition of Asuka's face is fine, although it occurs to me that maybe her neck is just a little bit too tall...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194403.jpeg

There are a few messy spots in her hair. You can see a little chunk missing in one of her ponytails, there's a paint run on her bangs, and the finish of her hair is sloppy around her ear. On the other hand, I like Sega's choice for her hair color, as it's the reddish-brown I tend to associate with Asuka.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194407.jpeg

Sega shaded her hair pretty aggressively, but I think it looks nice. On prize figures, any time the hair color is not just one flat color, it's a big plus in my book.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194409.jpeg

There's some excess glue or something where her jawline and neck meet, but the little red jewel in Asuka's earring is a nice detail.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194411.jpeg

Incorporating a corset into the design of Asuka's dress was kind of a neat feature. The strings in the corset and the tie are surprisingly non-chunky considering this is a cheap prize figure!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194506.jpeg

I really like the frilly shoulders on her dress, as it reinforces the gothic lolita motif of the figure. The material seems so light and delicate, doesn't it? However, you can see some stray black there, though.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194508.jpeg

Maybe it's because of that corset, but this figure seems to depict a slightly bustier than the norm Asuka!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194510.jpeg

There's a seam running up her leg, although the flat black finish of her stockings helps to mask this flaw. The ruffles on her dress are done pretty well, although there are a few spots where some red paint from her dress found its way onto the trim.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194512.jpeg

Probably the biggest single issue with this figure concerns the way Asuka is lacing her fingers together. All of her fingers kind of end up melding together, and it looks a little bit weird up close.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194514.jpeg

The finish on her shoes is okay, but I'm not too sure why Sega opted to make the bottoms of her shoes orange!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194569.jpeg

Pantsu check below. You could skip this if you want...

View spoilerHide spoiler

Plain white is the order of the day. The butt-dimple was an unexpected feature, but you can see a really messy spot on the inside of her thigh.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194571.jpeg

I found that under bright lighting, her complexion seems a little bit pale and washed out, but under more normal lighting, she looks really nice. I was messing around with my lighting setup and I really like how she looks below with a little bit of shadowing!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194573.jpeg

Moving on to Rei, one of her more interesting features is her facial expression. While Rei is of course generally stoic and unemotional, she does show some emotional development during the course of the show. Additionally, she does show flashes of sultriness, and for some reason Rei's expression reminds me of episode 5 of the series, where Shinji visits her apartment and barges in on her as she's getting out of the shower...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194936.jpeg

There are a few messy spots in her hair, but Rei's signature red eyes really stand out.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194938.jpeg

Presumably since she's meant to lay flat, Sega flattens the back of Rei's head.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435195024.jpeg

Sometimes, Sega drives me crazy with dumb little things. One such thing is their decision to plaster some copyright information on the back of her skirt! They did something similar with ITEM #1156 , putting that information on the bottom of Asuka's leg.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435195026.jpeg

Her top is made of a shiny black material, and to my surprise, there are teeth sculpted into the zipper. By design, the top of her bustier is not flush with her body, and the material is soft and flexible.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435195028.jpeg

It's kind of hard to see, but there's a spot in her armpit with some excess material.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435195030.jpeg

Much to my surprise, the various straps and buckles on her gloves turned out really nice! This is an area that could be a disaster on a prize figure, so Sega definitely deserves some credit here.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435195115.jpeg

There's a little bit of messy painting around the bottom of Rei's skirt.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435195117.jpeg

With her pose and that short skirt, there's no avoiding easy panty shots, short of placing her against a wall.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435195119.jpeg

You can see a few scuffs on her stockings. They resisted my efforts to remove them with a magic eraser.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435195121.jpeg

Base----------6/10

Only Asuka comes with a base, and it's rather plain. Plus, she attaches to the base with only a single peg. The way she's got a little bit of a lean right out of the box coupled with this base design kind of worries me; I would have preferred to see both of her feet attach to the base.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435194569.jpeg

Scale Comparison

These figures are quite large. Asuka stands about 9.25 inches (23.5 cm) tall, and her base adds about 1/2 inch to that. Asuka is supposed to be 5'1" (155 cm), and so that would make her about 1/6.5 scale. Rei is just about the same size, but because of her pose, she spans about 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) at her widest point.

One complaint is that is very hard to display Rei and Asuka together!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435195207.jpeg

This is Rei together with a very small figure, Kotobukiya's Ruri Gokou ITEM #61728. Ruri is a very petite 1/8 scale, so you can see that Rei is much larger, although even propped up on my DIY riser, she still has a pretty minimal vertical profile! It's too bad that Sega didn't giver her a base like Alter did with ITEM #65 , as that would make Rei much easier to display

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435195261.jpeg

For size comparison, here is Rei with Nendo Kobato Hasegawa ITEM #136448.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435195312.jpeg

Rei with another goth-loli Asuka, ITEM #302. That Asuka is 1/7 scale, and you can see that Rei is somewhat larger.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435195371.jpeg

Gothic Asuka + Gothic Asuka.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435195417.jpeg

Asuka with another non-canon Asuka, ITEM #28128. That other Asuka is listed at 1/6 scale for comparison.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1435195459.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------8/10

Arguments for: Large scale, good quality for prize figures, some really well-done details (like the straps on buckles on Rei's gloves), and for non-canon Rei and Asuka figures, the concept begind these figures is not ridiculous.

Arguments against: You might have to get creative to find a good display solution for Rei and it also might be a challenge to display the two of them together, some concerns about figure lean with Asuka, and Asuka appears just a little bit pasty under bright lighting.

Overall, however, these two figures are an interesting take on these two iconic characters, and if you want a Rei/Asuka pairing that's a little outside the norm, I'd recommend these figures, particularly if you're feeling creative and have some idea in your mind about how to display Rei.

Availability (as of this writing)

Not too hard too find, but not exactly common.

These are not rare figures, but you might have to hunt just a bit to get them together. I paid about 3000 yen for the pair, which considering their scale and overall quality is quite a good deal IMO.

Maakie (2 years ago) #3134222Rei's posing looks really nice with the base you costumised for her! ;) It's a bit sad how they don't look like a set at all to me...their size is huge though! I notice that with a lot of older prize figures, most of them are way bigger than prize figures nowadays!

I was certainly surprised by the size of these two, as you don't see that many 1/6-ish prize figures! Your comment that they don't look like a set is spot-on. Maybe if they'd given Asuka a different pose (sitting, kneeling, or maybe reclining to matck Rei!)...

Seiidaishougun (2 years ago) #3121261I can hardly think of a costume that would be more unfitting for Rei, it's far too daring and provocative for her, you couldn't get more out of character. It would fit Asuka just fine, however. At the same time, Asuka's dress is far too boring and conservative for her and totally out of character for her, but it would be a great fit for Rei.
Thus, if you would switch the costumes and poses, but keep the colours (red for Asuka and black for Rei), that would be a great fit for either girl.

If they swapped outfits, Asuka would need a different pose though. Rei's pose would be far too passive for Asuka...

Rei and Asuka equivalent, eh? That's not a sentiment you hear too often!

To be honest, I actually do like Asuka a bit more I think it has to do more with her design lol. But either way I like to joke that jailbait is jailbait lol

Seiidaishougun (2 years ago) #3120598Asuka's costume looks a bit bland to me (except for the color), and her pose is a bit dull. Rei's costume would've fit her much better, even more so in red. It doesn't fit Rei at all.
Besides that: Asuka ftw! :D

***Trying to imagine Asuka in Rei's costume***.

Asuka's dress is quite simple but it's not without someinteresting features, like the corseting. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think Rei's costume actually suits her pretty well.

I usually don't like straying too far from their uniforms or plugsuits but these outfits are so cute and I'm really impressed by these poses. And Asuka's soles are orange probably because wooden sole shoes were quite popular in gothic/lolita in the 90s/early 20s. Most notably would be Vivienne Westwood's Rocking Horse shoes that came with a platform wooden sole that back when they were released had a much darker almost orange stain than the ones made today.
I'll be out on the lookout for these figures myself now they're really cute.

They are quite neat figures, and much bigger than I expected! They also are kind of interesting in that they fill that middle ground; while they're not canon they're not quite as outrageous/silly as some of the other non-canon Rei and Asuka figures out there.
