FuRyu Sakura Kinomoto "Cheerful Pink"

Today we'll be reviewing the latest FuRyu prize figure of Sakura Kinomoto. Minor spoilers for one early episode of the Card Captor Sakura anime might follow...

About the character: Sakura Kinomoto is the title character from the much-beloved Card Captor Sakura anime. Sakura is a seemingly ordinary young girl who stumbles on an arcane book bearing the name "The Clow" in her father's library. The book contains a set of tarot cards, and when Sakura reads aloud the name of one of the cards (the Windy), the cards scatter to the wind. Keroberos, the guardian beast of the Clow, emerges and proclaims Sakura the card captor, tasking her with the retrieval of the Clow cards.

About this figure: This figure portrays Sakura in her battle costume from episode 4 of the CCS anime, "Sakura's Tiring Sunday", in which she battles the Wood and Rain cards. That's actually going to be important in a minute...

Packaging----------8/10

The design of the box differs a little bit from the previous two FuRyu Sakuras. Pink isn't the dominant color this time!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500170.jpeg

The rainclouds on the side of the box reflect the fact that this was Sakura's battle costume when she captured the Rain card.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500172.jpeg

Once Sakura is unpacked and attached to the base, the only set up that will be needed is to place her Clow Card in her hand.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500174.jpeg

Sakura attaches to the base at a single point. This is not a large figure, so she seems stable enough.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500176.jpeg

Sakura is wielding the Jump card. One problem, however, is that Sakura wore this outfit in episode four of the anime and at that time she had only captured the Windy, Fly, Shadow, and Watery cards. She didn't capture the Jump card until episode five, and she used the Watery card to capture Rain, so that might have been a better choice...

Set up and ready!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500291.jpeg

The box measures 23 by 18 by 12 cm and the package weighs in at 300 grams.

Posing----------8.5/10

Sakura's pose is fairly dynamic. With a Clow card and her sealing staff in hand, she looks ready for action!

Let's have a look at her.

My only real complaint about her pose is that the way she's got her legs positioned makes her look a little awkward from certain angles.

*---these ratings take into account the fact this is an inexpensive prize figure and represent ratings relative to other prize figures.

Overall, all the FuRyu Sakuras have been of pretty good quality, and this figure continues that trend. She does have a couple of really serious issues, however, as we'll see.

One of the best features of this figure is Sakura's cute face. IMO, the faces on the FuRyu Sakuras have been getting progressively better since their first Sakura offering ITEM #183247. In particular, her green eyes are very lovely and she's just as cute as can be, don't you think?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500338.jpeg

Generally, her hair looks pretty good, although mine had a little scratch on the top of her head and her headband seems a little bit tall in the middle.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500340.jpeg

The huge wings on Sakura's headband are a key feature of this battle costume. If I remember correctly, Kero pointed out this particular feature during the Kero-chan Check segment at the end of this episode. You can see a little bit of excess material in a couple of spots on this wing.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500342.jpeg

Mine also had a little scuff on the back of her head.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500403.jpeg

The back of the Clow Card is well-recreated, although on mine the paint got chipped in one spot.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500407.jpeg

The card is pretty thick! Also, this shot illustrates the biggest flaw with this figure; her fingers are quite messy, and FuRyu could have done better here.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500409.jpeg

Among all her battle costumes, this outfit is really one of the simpler designs. Some of the notable features are the big hoop skirt, and the thick trim around the skirt and around the shoulders.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500411.jpeg

There's a pretty obvious seam on the left side of her dress.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500494.jpeg

At first, I thought these handguards were way too thick and chunky, but after a quick rewatch of this episode I remembered that this is faithful to their actual appearance.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500496.jpeg

There are a few small painting flaws on the head of Sakura's staff. There's a black smudgy spot of some kind, and some gold paint spills over onto the "beak" of the staff.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500498.jpeg

Another interesting feature of this outfit is Sakura's boots, particularly those thick soles! However, this is another illustration of how her legs look a little awkward from certain angles.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500500.jpeg

CCS is not a fanservice anime by any stretch of the imagination, and so Sakura wears big puffy bloomers under her skirt.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500502.jpeg

This outfit appears in a slightly different form (minus the headband and wings) in some official Clamp artworks.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500599.jpeg

Overall, comparing this figure with Sakura in episode 4 of the anime, I'd say FuRyu did a fine job overall!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500605.jpeg

Base----------6/10

The base is nothing special, and it is quite large. It's an ellipse with major and minor axes of 6 and 4 inches (15 cm/10 cm) respectively. It's also quite thick, measuring a good 1/2 inch thick.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500601.jpeg

Scale Comparison

From the bottom of the base to the top of of her wings, Sakura measures about 8 inches (20 cm) and I estimate that Sakura herself (factoring out the wings) is about 7 (17.5) inches tall. At this early point in the series, it is established that Sakura is about 138 cm (4'6") tall, and so this figure is right around 1/8 scale, consistent with the other FuRyu Sakuras.

Here is Sakura with the previous two FuRyu Sakura offerings, ITEM #183247 and ITEM #246236. Of the three, I like the outfit best on the "Lovely Kitten" Sakura, but this Sakura might have the cutest face!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500672.jpeg

Sakura with another recent Sakura, Plum's "Angel Crown" Sakura ITEM #270949. I have to say that this figure compares favorably with that one in terms of overall finish, as well as in terms of price (1500 yen vs. 12000 yen!!).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500812.jpeg

Tomoyo-chan ITEM #1080 fawning over Sakura/admiring her handiwork (she designs all of Sakura's costumes after all).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500848.jpeg

Sakura with Nanoha Takamachi ITEM #141879. Nanoha is a largish 1/7 scale for scale comparison.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1436500888.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

Arguments for: Super cute face, surprisingly dynamic pose, low price, and you can never have too much Sakura-chan, right?

Arguments against: Some obvious flaws in finish (her hand is probably the worst offender), and if you're a stickler for detail/continuity, the fact that she's wielding the Jump card before it was captured might bother you.

Overall, however, given the cuteness of the figure and its low price point, I can think of no reason not to own this figure if you are a CCS fan.

Availability (as of this writing)

Not too hard too find.

You shouldn't have too much trouble sourcing one of these figures, and I'd expect to pay in the ballpark of 1500-2000 yen.

dalli (2 years ago) #3481862I'm a little late here, but
To give you some peace of mind, if you go by the manga, she wears this clothes on chapter 2, when she already have the 'jump' card :)

I forgot about that. I guess I always think of the CCS anime first, and sometimes it slips my mind that some of the story elements of the manga are a little different.

I didn't really care for this outfit so I planned to skip this figure but now I realized it's really nice and worth buying!

abi (2 years ago) #3169874great review! I have to say she looks better than I thought in comparison to prototype, I decided to pass on her from the line of Furyu's Sakuras, but she is really cute =)

babyofcry (2 years ago) #3170390Thanks for the awesome review once again! I ordered her a few days ago and also the "Lovely Kitten" version because of your review (though it's definitely not my favorite) c: I was so excited for this one in particular I'm glad it looks pretty great overall c:!
Thank you again!~

Her outfit is not outrageously detailed, but sometimes with prize figures, that's for the best!

ASH-Hikari (2 years ago) #3170445I always complain about how FuRyu sculpts Sakura's hair, but it looks like they're improving. This is the best one yet. Good to see and great review!

You know, her hair is one of the first things I noticed. It turned out really well, and FuRyu captured all the essential figures (her messy bangs and twin ahoges), particularly if (like I do) you prefer the appearance of anime Sakura to her manga counterpart.

pacificrimming (2 years ago) #3170519wow that's a cute one!! such a 90s sort of outfit. thanks for sharing!

Yeah, now that you mention it, her outfit does have quite the '90's feel to it. Sometimes I wonder (and cringe a little bit) about what a contemporary remake of CCS (a la Sailor Moon) would be like...

R_Kasahara (2 years ago) #3162036Thanks for this review! I haven't bit on any of FuRyu's Sakuras since the sculpts of their chins bug me (for the most part), but the final product looks pretty good. Might have to get her sometime ^^

With the first FuRyu Sakura, her face was clearly off, but the last two releases have gotten progressively better in that area.

weiwere (2 years ago) #3161954Nice! Makes me tempted to get one too.

Littleredguard (2 years ago) #3161919I wish they'd put more effort on the detail of the clothes, i would still buy one if my local shop gets it tho.
Nice review.

Considering the low price of this figure, she'd be a perfect figure to augment (or start!) a CCS figure collection. At first, I also thought her outfit was too simple, but that's just the design of this outfit. I'd be interested to see how FuRyu would handle some of Sakura's more elaborate battle costumes (like her fairy outfit when she captured Time, the bat-wings from when she captured Shadow, or the Alice in Wonderland costume, or ...).

solluxcaptor (2 years ago) #3161917She looks soooo cute! <3

tomoko (2 years ago) #3161901Very cute figure, and nice review~!
