iSorry for my rant, just needed to get ...n/a

I'm part of this figure photography "club" on DA so I keep getting Deviant watch things when new stuff is added.
And sometimes they're pictures of bootlegs, but their owners know they are bootlegs and willingly bought them.
And also some people talk about figures they own and then some people stay things like "Yeah I only have the bootleg cause I can't afford the real ones cause it's so expensive"

That just bugs me somewhat... I can't blame someone for accidentally buying a bootleg especially when they're just starting.
I have a Kogami Akira petit nendo bootleg, which I found out about when I ordered the Konata cat ear nendo she belongs with. and it just seriously pissed me off that I had bought a bootleg (it was secondhanded from someone on a forum) and that was only a petit nendo, I can't imagine how pissed I would be if it were a full figure.
It's somewhere tucked away in a drawer right now because I don't know what to do with it. I'm glad I have the real one now..

So I can't really understand why someone would willingly buy a bootleg, just because it's cheaper.. in my opinion if you want to collect figures, do it "right", or don't do it, if you can't afford it don't buy them or buy only one or 2, or save up for them.

If people keep buying bootlegs then they keep getting made, which means people who hate bootlegs like me, have to be even more careful..

Money is tight for me as well, but I try to cut back on almost everything just to be able to atleast buy one figure a month or a pre-order. Cause I see it as art, and collecting makes me happy.
For groceries I almost try to buy everything when it's on sale, my meals mostly get decided by what's lowered in price at the grocery store that week. I still have good meals, I just save up money which I can use for more fun stuff like figures.

Ofcourse I can't talk for someone else but buying bootlegs is not the answer I think. No matter how you look at it, it will always be a cheap knock off, most likely in lesser quality and I can't really believe you can enjoy your purchase then...

Sorry for the rant, I just felt like writing about it xD

elixia (2 years ago) #881447after reading this post it reminded me that I have a dilemma atm. one of my friend (friend A) bought another one of my friend (friend B) a bootleg Nendoroid L. she was so happy and has been wanting one for a long time, posting pictures all over Facebook n stuff.
she doesn't know it's a bootleg, but sadly, I do.

man don't really want to burst her bubble aye

and totally get you on the deviantart thing. I see bootleg vocaloid pictures submitted into vocaloid clubs. but the weird thing is that out of all the comments on those pictures... hardly anyone mention to the poster that it's a bootleg

I have that dilemma with one friend too. Her entire collection of four nendoroids are all bootlegs but she doesn't realize it. And she enjoys playing with them so much for who knows how lnog. T_T While they are fakes it feels weird just going up to her and telling her they're bootlegs.

.-. Seriously... Whenever I can, I try to warn my friends politely that their figure(s) are bootlegs. And all of a sudden, a third party jumps in and starts ranting about how money is tight and that as long as the figure stands it's "all good." Guh... *facepalm* I don't understand the quantity vs quality mentality either. It gives me a big headache.

DvalinnHey, don't equate prize figures with bootlegs and stop acting like some elitist. Not everyone has a massive money tree in their garden. I collect because I want figures of characters I know and love, and if I can get all the characters from a series in prize figures for the price of one expensive scaled pvc (see Madoka), then I know what to pick. Sega prizes can sometimes look nearly equal to the expensive version, for that matter (look at their recent Asuka).

That said, I am "elitist" if that's what it means to have generally higher standards and prefer to have nicer, scale figures than the cheap trading/prize stuff. I do have a few of those myself, though, simply because they were cheap and I hadn't seen better of the characters otherwise. But if I loved some series of characters and wanted figures of them, I'd get the best (in my view) available for them, instead of sacrificing quality for quantity. Some people, obviously yourself included, don't think the same way. You're entitled to spend your money how you want. Doesn't mean we have to agree, and I don't want to slight those who don't have the money to collect better merchandise. Though I do question the mentality of quantity over quality simply because I don't understand it.

Well, bootlegs is a completely waste of money imo >_> ... and so does this hobby according to my parents lol.

Anyway, some people think of quantity over quality, ... however wrong you think it is, it'll never go through them ... There's 1 friend of mine, who sell every bandai model kit he had and switch it with a whole cheaper knock off ... and i'm like "DAFUQ DUDE!???"(;;^ ^)

I would have to agree, some Sega Prizes are really freaking good when it comes to quality, you wouldn't think they some of these came off a UFO machine.

I thought of a lot to say but I realized I could sum it into a short comment. If it's not the real thing, I will go without. Even if I can't afford it, I would rather not have it than have a bootleg.

tittycakesthey also could have taken their profits and donated it, but instead they do it the reverse, charge you more and they get the honor of having done donations whoo man win-win for them they should do that every month

I still think she is worth the money though, because she's also an exclusive. I was just very unfortanete to not have enough money to order her :( Otherwise I totally would've done it. Her pose is beautiful, her base is special, I love her.

Just because a figure is sometimes (ridiculously) expensive doesn't excuse buying a bootleg.
I'm not judging anyone, it's their money but I don't think it's ok.
I myself try to save up every penny now to buy some figures I want. It's hard sometimes but the joy I feel when they arrive makes up for everything :D

mikehuntitchwell u have to admit some(while with a lot of detail and design qualities) are overly expensive and don't get me started on cheerful miku which is a total ripoff, i can understand why people would buy bootlegs, doesn't quite sit well with me if i know something from my collection is a fake but w/e obviously some bootlegs aren't that bad

Cheerful Miku donates 2000Y to the victims of the earthquake, so that would make her about 8000Y without it, which is a "normal" price for a high end figure like hers. Ofcourse you can argue it's expensive but then you have 2 choices. Not buy her or save up for her.
I would've loved to have her but I was really, really too broke to buy her unfortanetely :( I would've loved to support the victims of the earthquake some more (I do have cheerful Miku nendo) Unfortanetely at the moment I couldn't afford her :(

The reason I'm so against people buying bootlegs is that if people keep buying them they keep getting made. Which you can argue is bad, for us collectors who want the real thing, because with more bootlegs out there, we have to be more careful.
That's what bugs me the most, it's not really personal against the people who buy them themselves, although I certainly think it's not a good thing and they should spend their money on the real thing.

I buy some of my figures secondhanded indeed, and some on preorder, it's kind of 50/50. For example the kuroshitsuji figures should really get a re-release, they are going for insane prices online, money which could go to the figure company's if they'd just be smart and do a re-release :P

Though there seem to be many people who just collect on numbers alone, without much care for quality. (see Taito, Bandai, Sega etc figures, all that cheap crap that sells in massive numbers). Some people think more is better. We know they are wrong, but what can you do?

Bootlegs are just junk. They look crappy (I mean really, I haven't seen a single one that looks anywhere near decent), their materials are iffy and possibly dangerous, they're usually badly put together and none of the original creators get a dime. I'd never buy a bootleg, really, and I always make sure someone is trustworthy before buying from them, so I'll probably avoid buying them accidentally as well.
