FuRyu Sakura Kinomoto "Platinum Star"

Today we'll be reviewing FuRyu's latest prize figure of Sakura Kinomoto. There might be some minor spoilers about seasons two and three of the Card Captor Sakura anime, so be advised of that...

About the character: Sakura Kinomoto is the title character from the much-beloved Card Captor Sakura anime. Sakura is a seemingly ordinary young girl who stumbles on an arcane book bearing the name "The Clow" in her father's library. The book contains a set of tarot cards, and when Sakura reads aloud the name of one of the cards (the Windy), the cards scatter to the wind. Keroberos, the guardian beast of the Clow, emerges and proclaims Sakura the card captor, tasking her with the retrieval of the Clow Cards.

About this figure: This figure portrays Sakura as she appears in the opening to season three of the CCS anime. Her new staff first appears at the very end of season two after View spoilerHide spoilerSakura passes the final judgment devised by Yue and Clow Reed, and the typical plot point of season three involves either one of the Clow Cards going rogue or some scenario masterminded by Eriol/Clow Reed forces Sakura to inbue one of the Clow Cards with her own magic, thereby transforming the card into a Sakura Card.

Packaging----------9/10

With CCS, you'd expect pink to be the dominant color of the packaging and FuRyu does not disappoint on that front. The large window affords a good view of Sakura, but prize figures are meant to be unboxed, aren't they?

I really like this cute illustration of Sakura used on the side panel. There is a very similar top-down shot like this of Sakura in the opening animation to season three, but she looks more serious in the opening animation.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453652255.jpeg

As you can see, there is pretty much no set up involved. Sakura comes attached to her base with staff already in hand.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1451590608.jpeg

This is not a particularly heavy figure, but since Sakura occupies quite a bit of space, the box is a little bit larger in volume than you might expect for a 1/8-ish scale figure. The box measures 22 by 19 by 15 cm and the whole package weighs a little less than 400 grams.

Thus, the packaging is fine, and the cute illustration is a nice bonus.

Posing----------7/10

As it happens, Sakura's pose is probably my biggest beef with this particular figure. But, before we get to that, let's have a look at Sakura-chan.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453595664.jpeg

My issue with Sakura's pose is that it is quite rigid. In particular, note how her right leg, upper right torso, and head almost lie in the same plane. Combine this with the fact that her left arm is almost perpendicular to this plane and the way she's holding the arm straight out, and it just makes Sakura look really, really rigid.

In fairness, CCS is not exactly an action anime, but by comparison with some of FuRyu's other offerings, for example ITEM #246236 and ITEM #263957, the pose just seems lacking by comparison.

Sculpting----------8/10*
Painting----------7/10*

*---these ratings take into account the fact this is an inexpensive prize figure and represent ratings relative to other prize figures.

FuRyu's Sakura figures have generally been pretty good quality, and for the most part this figure continues that trend, although there are some issues with this figure that didn't show up in some of their other CCS figures. Overall, I'd say the quality of the sculpt and finish is slightly above average for a prize figure. There aren't an excessive number of glaring issues in terms of paint or finish, but there are a couple really noticeable problems on the painting front.

Sakura's face is really cute and all of her key features (her green eyes and dual ahoge) are represented, but if you look closely, you can see that the painting around the edges of her mouth looks a little bit weird.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453595666.jpeg

With prize figures, sometimes there are nasty sculpting flaws lurking in hair, but Sakura seems to be free of such issues. Plus, her big hair ribbons look sufficiently floppy.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453595668.jpeg

That big gold star is one of the most notable elements of Sakura's outfit, but it's a little chunky and rounded in spots.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453595726.jpeg

The two photos below illustrate the biggest painting flaw with the figure. FuRyu certainly did a good job sculpting Sakura's skirt, as the fringe on all the various layers of the skirt is well done. Further, just as in the opening animation, there are two white layers and one pink. However, note the little spots on the skirt. It almost looks like there were little tiny pieces of debris on the skirt during the painting process, which kept those spots from being painted.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453595730.jpeg

You can see the same effect on the back of the skirt, and it's most noticeable on the white parts of the skirt. YMMV on this sort of thing, and maybe I just got one of the worst ones in this regard.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453595732.jpeg

In the season three opening, Sakura is depicted in flight and after transforming the Fly card in episode 51, she gains the ability to fly without having to use the sealing staff for this function. In any event, the wings are pretty impressive. In the opening animation, the wings are solid pink, but I'm not going to complain about that, as the clear-to-pink effect looks pretty neat.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453595734.jpeg

I was a little surprised that her wings came pre-attached, as they are pretty rigid. Thus, if your local postal workers do not treat your packages with the same care with which they treat their Faberge egg collections, that could be a recipe for trouble.

The colors and overall design of Sakura's staff look correct. I always preferred the design of this iteration of the staff as opposed to the "beak" seen in seasons 1 and 2.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453595774.jpeg

A little more differentiation of Sakura's fingers would have been nice, but this is just a prize figure, I guess...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453595776.jpeg

You can see a little bit of sloppy painting where pink paint spills onto the wings.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453595778.jpeg

CCS is not a fanservice anime, and so Sakura wears big puffy bloomers under her skirt. Note the subtle color gradient on the underside of the skirt.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453595780.jpeg

The way the material in the bloomers is bunching up in spots was an unexpected detail.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453595782.jpeg

I like how the ribbon winds around Sakura's leg. That's a nice little detail.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453595821.jpeg

The ribbon stays attached to Sakura's leg via a small peg. There's some sort of a mold line running up the back of her leg, but that's a pretty common flaw with prize figures.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453595823.jpeg

Base----------6/10

I'm not really sure why FuRyu gave Sakura such a large base. It's approximately 5 inches (12.5 cm) in diameter, and it's also quite (~2 cm) thick.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453652257.jpeg

Personally, my shelves are getting crowded, so I really wish FuRyu would have gone with a smaller base.

Scale Comparison

Sakura herself is just over 7 inches (18 cm) in height, and her base will add another 2 cm to that. She's basically the same size as the most recent wave of FuRyu Sakuras. It's established that Sakura goes through a growth spurt during the first two seasons and by the team season three rolls around, she should be 153 cm in height, making this Sakura at the small end of 1/8 scale (approximately 1/8.5).

Sakura with a couple of recent FuRyu Sakuras, ITEM #246236 and ITEM #263957 .

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453652375.jpeg

Sakura with Plum's Sakura ITEM #270949. This comparison emphasizes that despite the flaws in this figure, all these FuRyu Sakuras are great values.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453652611.jpeg

Like Sakura, I guess Yami ITEM #300672 could be classified as a mahou shoujo, although Yami's abilities are based on nanotechnology rather than magic. Yami and Sakura are pretty similar physically (they're both established to be 153 cm in height), and I think you can see how the 1/8 scale Yami is just marginally larger than Sakura.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1453652673.jpeg

Though it's not seen in this particular figure, Maryan ITEM #61395 has a little bit of magical girl in her. Maryan is also 1/8 scale for comparison.

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

Arguments for: With this Sakura, CCS fans can now have a complete set of "opening theme" Sakuras, her outfit from the opening to season three is faithfully reproduced, low price point, and if you're like me, seeing the figure on your shelf might have you humming the opening theme song (I am a dreamer...hisomu power...).

Arguments against: Slightly awkward and rigid pose, excessively large base, and it seems like the overall quality of the figure is marginally lower than some of the other FuRyu Sakuras.

Despite some flaws, the low price point ultimately makes this figure a winner and if you are a Sakura fan there's no reason not to have this figure in your collection. Surprisingly, FuRyu has not announced any more Sakura figures, but maybe they'll do so at the upcoming WonFes. At least I hope they do!

Availability (as of this writing)

Still available new.

As I write this, HLJ still seems to have Sakura in stock, and even if you go the preowned route, I don't imagine you'd have any real difficulty in sourcing this figure.

Seravy (1 year ago) #7118364A wonderful figure, but 2 out of 3 arrived with broken heads, making it a risky purchase.

I saw on Sakura's MFC item page that a number of people seemed to get broken figures. I wonder how that happened...

Maakie (1 year ago) #6567135I really like the effect on her wings, but the rest of this figure doesn't really impress me...maybe it's the pose like you said. Quite boring compared to the other FuRyu Sakura's. Anyway it's still a very interesting line, but I think I'm glad that I stopped with collecting items from CCS with the amount of figures they're releasing now. xD
I voted for Platinum btw. I remember being really impressed with that opening when I watched CCS for the first time. It made Sakura look a lot more mature and more serious being a magical girl. But yeah, Fruits Candy is so cute!

Yeah, the pose is rather boring. If they'd tried to do a flying pose as seen in the opening animation, that would have been neat but this is after all a cheap prize.

I'd never really thought about that before, but each successive opening animation does seem to depict a progressively more mature Sakura.

I could have said exactly the same... in the same order. And don't forget Fruits Candy, maybe not the best, but full of cuteness.

One of the many great things about CCS is the music. Like the show, the music is so happy it always brings a smile :).
