The "Free!" Figure Series by Alter
(Bishi, bishi! XD)

[Picture and text heavy]

We all knew these boys are going to generate a craze like no other the moment the first short PV was released. And sure enough while the anime truly is a one of kind treat for the eyes, the same can be said pretty much for this figure series as well.

Warning: This is a review on tree figures, so naturally it will be a long one. Also, please, excuse the bad photography and be warned that there might be some fan-girl statements involved...

(Bishies in swimsuits... Come on... Plus, I love this picture!)

Note: Together as a whole and as a series the three figures are around a 9 for me (or more like 8.50) and that is the score I have give them on the side. Individual scores for each figure will be written down next to the descriptions below.

Khem...
Usually this is the spot I write stuff about how I ordered the figures in question, but in this particular case... These gorgeous gentlemen are not mine. They belong to clc, who was kind enough to leave them with me for save keeping. I am writing this review because she requested it. And just for the record, I will buy them for myself as soon as she decides to take them home, so you might say it is a matter of time. Also, as far as I know she ordered them form AmiAmi.

Packaging and boxes / Score 8/10 (all boxes)
So... Boxes... Rather plain, if I have to honest. They are entirely see-though and almost everything about them is just plain. Simple writing, some simple colouring like blue, green and red for each character and a single production photo on one of the sides of the boxes. And nothing more. They are almost the same size, have the same design, same quality. May be a bit too plain, but they still kind of suit the figures so it is okay.

Haruka Nanase

- Sculpting 9/10 - Haru has a nice sculpt. Reaaly nice. His face is cute, his hair is nicely done. His hands and feet are really well defined and of course his chest. Just look at all the nice muscles!

- Painting 9/10 - Also very nicely done. There are some minor problems here or there but nothing that sticks out too much to be annoying. I really like the shades on his skin. The tone looks natural in kind of realistic way. Also, for a figure that is basically naked there are still some small details to show the effort that was made to make him look good none the less.

- Posing 8/10 - He looks good. Don't know why they decided that the wind just have to blow his jersey, but you can kind of imagine he is on his way to take the jersey off and jump into a nearby pool. So, all this said the pose actually suits him.

- Base 8/10 - Simple and plain, just like the box. See-though and the only detail on it is Haru's name. I don't like how only one of his feet is connected to it but despite that he is not as shaky as other figures I know of, so I am willing to overlook that.

Makoto Tachibana

- Sculpting 9/10 - Like for many others, I am sure, Mako-chan is my most favourite character from the series. He is just such a cuttie! I also like his sculpt the most from all three figures. He is solid and a little bit more heavy than the others. He is also the tallest from the three. The only thing I will add as a side note is that he has his jacket on. We all know that Mako-chan's "strength" are his back muscles, but unfortunately we don't see them. Then again, knowing his character he will be too shy to take it off, so not really a problem... (We have female figures to which you can take the clothes off... Why couldn't they make one male figure and make his jacket removable? O.o Whyy?)

- Painting 8/10 - As nice as he is, unfortunately Makoto has a few painting errors like a smudge on his knee and two others on the back of his legs. While they are not that big to actually be a real issue, unlike the occasional dots of paint the other figures have, these errors are actually quite visible and that makes them a bit annoying. A bit sad, because he is other ways perfect.

- Posing 9/10 - Simple pose, suitable for him as a character. Also, I am not sure if it is because of it, but I think he is the most photogenic from the three figures, because no matter how you place him he just looks nice. A perfect example that sometimes less is more.

- Base 9/10 - Same design as the others, but he is the only one with a solid footing. Both his feet connect perfectly with the base and he is totally unmovable. Again, a perfect example how simple makes perfect!

Rin Matsuoka

- Sculpting 7/10 - Hmmm... Rin. Oh, dear Rin. All I have to say for his sculpt is that I don't really get it. If we look at the different parts of him individually - like his hair, face, body, muscles and hands. All of these are really, and I mean really, nicely done. And still I don't get it. He just looks kind of strange to me.

- Painting 9/10 - If I have to be honest his painting is the nicest from the three. There are almost no errors or what so ever. Even the slightest dots I could find, you have to look really closely to notice and be really picky to care (which unfortunately I am), but still really well done.

- Posing 7/10 - And again. I don't get it... Why pose him like this? First, I don't think it suits him and second, he just looks strange. Like he is on a fashion show or something which doesn't really make sense. He is a swimmer and I don't think swimmers do runway shows. He is the only figure I have trouble placing on my shelves because no matter what I do he just looks unnatural to me. Which is a pity really, because he is other ways gorgeous.

- Base 8/10 - Again. Same as the others in terms of design. The only thing I don't get is why only one of his feet is connected to it. The way he is placed it should make sense for both his feet to be connected, but that is not the case. Why? Who knows...

Enjoyment / Score 9/10 (all figures)
All in all, I like these figures quite a lot. They are male and they are gorgeous, and I think this industry needs more boys like them. I, personally, sure do. I am scoring the "enjoyment" as a 9, because as I said they are not mine, but I am guessing the moment I do buy them the score will go up to 10 instantly. In conclusion all that is left to say is that I am desperately missing the other two boys. Not that three figures are not enough. It is just that without Nagisa and Rei, the series just don't look as complete as it would be other way. But, who knows... May be one day...

CannedMuffins (1 year ago) #6803219I have to agree with Rin's posing. I personally do like it but...the whole over the shoulder thing? When I display him I can't really show off his chest and ab sculpting because it just looks awkward to face him in that direction. The way they intend for you to pose him makes him look pretty boring compared to the other two ( Are they trying to show off his booty or something? (To be honest if you were to flaunt any of the figures butts Makoto's is a solid 10/10 but that's me possibly being bias). Just his face turned in the opposite direction would make him pop so much more than he does. I still love him and having the other two I just couldn't not get him but all in all wish some things were done a little differently.

I think the poses were loosely based off this poster [ext link ] almost glad we didn't get Nagisa in that case. How awkward...
