iFirst4Figures: NiGHTS + Tale of my Childhood9.83/10

I know that I said my next blog would be a tour of my room, but I just managed to get my hands on something rare and wonderful for a great price and simply had to review this right away.

Today, I shall review one of the few existing pieces of officially licensed merchandise for one of Sega's most iconic and beautiful series. Today, I am reviewing the 1/5 Sega All-Stars: NiGHTS statue by First4Figures.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460776596.jpeg

But before I get started with this review, let's gather around the campfire and get some smores ready! It is time for a story! :D

As a gamer, NiGHTS has a very special place in my heart for one big reason. At the tender age of 7, NiGHTS into Dreams was the very first artifact of the video game industry my young eyes ever gazed upon.

One day, I decided to go into my brother's room and touch his stuff because that is what little brothers do. I got into his closet, read his Ninja Turtles comics, poked at random objects, and that is when the fateful encounter began. A plastic case with a purple flying jester-like character fell off a shelf and onto my foot.

I look at it and think to myself, "What is this? A movie? The back says I can make characters do things. What is a Sega Saturn? I know that Saturn is a planet. Wait. Isn't Sega that Disney show with the fast blue mouse?"

As you can tell from these thoughts, I did not fully understand what a video game was at the time. I also thought Sonic was a Disney character for some reason. :P

Picture actually drawn by Sonic himself in response to this Twitter post from IGN.

After I identified the Sega Saturn in the room, figured out how to put the disc in and turn it on, I had the experience that would change my life forever. I played my first video game.

My brother came home, found me playing on his console, dragged me out of the room and locked me out. I never got to play on that console again because my brother started to lock his door regularly after that, but I knew that I had experienced something magical. I needed to play a video game again. The music, the free-flying acrobatics, it was glorious. I think Darwin in this clip from "The Amazing World of Gumball" is a good summary of what this moment felt like.

When First4Figures announced this 12.5 inch tall statue of NiGHTS, I knew I had to have this. My collection just has no chance of being complete without something related to NiGHTS. Plus official NiGHTS merchandise has always been a rarity for this series.

While looking for the lowest price I can find, I found just two left in stock at eKnight Media, the store I got my Bishoujo Juri Han last month, and this store's offer was just too good to pass on.
$183.04 with free shipping + $5.49 in discount points.

A week passes by and it finally arrives! Perhaps the most elegant and enchanting piece in my collection. NiGHTS in his Journey of Dreams design playing his dream flute with a crescent moon behind him. Before this review starts, let's just skip the comments where we argue about what pronoun to use to refer to NiGHTS with considering that Nightmarens are genderless. I am just going to say "he" because it easier and "it" is considered rude when referring to any person. So instead, let's see if we can create a new pronoun for non-gender people. OKIE DOKIE! So now, the review can begin! :D

First let's take a look at the box.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460776228.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/ChocolateSpider1460776230.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/ChocolateSpider1460776232.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/ChocolateSpider1460776234.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/ChocolateSpider1460776236.jpeg

The box itself is quite lovely. The background image around the entire box is that of a stary cosmos image with what seems to be a thin nebula in the center on each side along with puffy clouds at the bottom. This imagery stays true to the lore of the dream realm where NiGHTS is from.

As is the case with most polystone statues, this figure has been safely encased in this styrofoam shell to ensure its arrival in good condition as polystone is a relatively brittle material and could break if not handled properly.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460776381.jpeg

I open it and check for any signs of paint defects or damage. And to my satisfaction, everything is in perfect condition.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460776385.jpeg

Next comes the assembly. As I do so, let's take a look at each of the three parts. First is the base.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460776389.jpeg

I actually enjoy the design of this base very much. The design feels similar to that of star imagery one would see in the bedroom of young children, which again, is fitting from the dream realm lore of this series. It also complements the LED feature in the exclusive version of this statue. So this design is also fitting for the fact that the exclusive version is essentially an artistic gamer's night-light. :P

Next is the crescent moon.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460776515.jpeg

A simple, yet lovely design for the moon was used here. A crescent moon is inherently a relatively basic shape and image to make. There is not much to this moon beyond its basic shape and light use of shading which becomes gradually darker to as the gradient moves inward.

There is really not much beyond what has been done here that is needed to make a proper crescent moon. A very simple, but powerfully beautiful image.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460776517.jpeg

Finally, we perch NiGHTS on his little stand.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460776590.jpeg

And your done! You now have an enchanting statue of everyone's favorite Nightmaren ready to be put on display.

Right off the bat, I noticed two things F4F improved from the prototype images prior to release. The first is that they corrected their original error of making the gem on the center of his chest yellow instead of red.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460776817.jpeg
Protoype Pic

The second is that they straightened out the pole which NiGHTS is perched on. Originally, the images showed it leaning forward a bit, making NiGHTS and the moon lean forward too much and look like the whole thing could tip over.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460776519.jpeg

Those two things were very off putting for me when I saw them. I even sent them a message regarding regarding the pole. But I felt confident that F4F would fix that. And I read their response to someone's comment regarding the gem on the chest and they said, "Don't know how we missed that. We will have the color corrected before release." But when I found a few pics of copies that people got in the mail, I saw that the pole issue was fixed and felt more comfortable getting it.

After closely examining the sculpt and paint, all I can say is that I am blown away. Every little detail of this iconic character has been so perfectly and accurately crafted, just as any high quality sculpture of such a beloved character should be. But you can view them images below and make that judgement for yourself.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/ChocolateSpider1460776809.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/ChocolateSpider1460776813.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/ChocolateSpider1460776910.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/ChocolateSpider1460776815.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/ChocolateSpider1460816066.jpeg

One small criticism I do have about this figure as that it can be a bit hard to find the right height and angle to have it displayed at. This is mainly because when the base and moon is facing forward, you get this.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460776519.jpeg

The problem with this is you can't see NiGHTS' face. That could have been fixed by lowering his arms a little bit. But there is an easier solution to this. Just rotate him to the right a little bit and you get this.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460776523.jpeg

However, the problem here, and this is just from an OCD perspective, is that while NiGHTS is at a good viewing angle, the base and moon's angle feels a bit off. But this is actually not as big of a problem as I may have made that sound. Because of shading used in the moon's paint-job, it actually hinders the eye's depth perception to clearly see that the angle of the moon is just a little off. So in a sense, you could say this is designed to be viewed at an asymmetrical viewing angle. It is one of those minor design imperfections that very mildly irks you at first, but then you quickly don't care or notice it anymore. This brings me to an idea that I had for a DIY project.

At some point, I am going to try making a custom moon and base to place NiGHTS on. In terms of shape, The moon and base are actually pretty basic. I am going to try to make my moon about 15% larger than the original and have it placed a bit higher. I might even try making mine light up like the exclusive version, but maybe a bit brighter or the whole moon lights up rather than just the bottom region. When I am done, I am hoping that the viewing angle I will design it for will be something like this.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460776918.jpeg

I will also try to make a base that has some of the clouds seen in the illustration this statue is based on. I found an interesting method for making explosion effects using cotton balls, chicken wire and a light bulb. In theory, I could use the same method with a dimmer light to achieve the cloud effect shown here. Maybe even make a stary night sky backdrop for it.
http://www.gaminesia.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/saturnnights-into-dreams..._1.jpg

On that note, this statue right out of the box offers a lot of option for diorama and backdrop usage because it actually still looks pretty good without the moon.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460778111.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/ChocolateSpider1460778109.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/ChocolateSpider1460778113.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/ChocolateSpider1460778115.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/thumbnails/ChocolateSpider1460778117.jpeg

This will be my first true DIY figure project, but I am going to give it my all. I look forward to sharing the results with everyone when I am done. :D

In conclusion, I would say that this statue is basically just a tiny rotation here or there away from being absolutely flawless.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1460778160.jpeg

Some have said that they chose not to get this statue because it features the Journey of Dreams design rather than the Into Dreams version. That is understandable, but like both games and both designs a lot, so I would have been just as happy with either version. But now that I have this, I will see if I can find something with NiGHTS' original design to put in my room with this statue. :3

Official or high quality NiGHTS merchandise is a rarity despite the popularity, love and legacy of this series. But I suppose the nature of licensed NiGHTS merchandise is much like the series itself. Few installments, but each is something truly beautiful.

Thank you for reading this review. I plan to start my review of First4Figure's Sonic and Shadow soon. item #105281 item #132088

SegaMan (10 months ago) #9458963Great review! This is such a gorgeous statue. As someone who loves NiGHTS to pieces, I regret not pre-ordering it. Plus I really don't have that kind of money to spend. It is still available at a few stoes for reasonable prices. So you still have a chance to have it someday perhaps. :D

ChocolateSpider (11 months ago) #8878798What's this about trading figures? Can I see a pic or link? I MUST HAVE MORE NiGHTS!!! O3O

we actually got both of ours from a reputable seller on ebay-- they do a lot of trading figs and stuff. i haven't seen another one on there since a year or so ago when i bought mine, but mine was ~$13 with shipping, no box. i already own the wii port, so i'm fine with that.

sorry for potato lighting, it's night and there's no light coming in through the adjacent window.

collectorCherri (11 months ago) #8842590Awesome review. It must be nice to have a statue of a character that means a lot to you. I'd feel ecstatic for a Gex or Spyro one.
Good luck on your DIY project. I'm looking forward to it since your idea will improve upon the statue.-I agree that they put the moon at a really inconvenient angle.
I would kill for a Spyro statue too. Maybe we can convince Gaming Heads to make one. They already did one for Ratchet & Clank, which is also by Insomniac Games. :3

Lucidream (11 months ago) #8821444Nice review! I'd definitely love to get Nights. They looks so elegant here and I love the game so much. Sad I don't have time to play games anymore...
I really want a F4F figure (especially metal sonic) but they're so expensive and hard to find at a good price...
Thank you. And I agree about the prices. The main reason I almost never buy from F4F directly is because of their massive shipping fees. To buy this from them directly comes with a shipping fee of $38. The full price of $209.99 is not that bad, but this make the difference between them and what I paid for this at eKnight Media $64.95 saved + a fair amount of discount points. That is a huge freaking difference in price.

If F4F would at least offer some less expensive shipping methods, I might actually be able to afford an exclusive edition someday. :|
