iTaito Pochaco "Winter"7.5/10    Readers' selection (2017-04-12)

It's been a while since I've reviewed any prize figures, and so I figured why not take a look at a figure that's really grown on me, a Taito prize figure of the one and only Super Pochaco. If you know Pochaco, you know there's a lot of her to love, and she's donning a bikini top in this figure, so if that sounds NSFW to you, then it's not too late...

About the character: Super Pochaco is a character designed by Tsuji Santa, meant to serve as a sidekick to the well-known Super Sonico. Pochaco is something of a divisive character in the figure community because of her unconventional plus-sized physique, with three sizes of 107-79-94 cm (42-31-37 inches). Pochaco also makes a few cameo appearances during Super Sonico: The Animation.

Packaging----------8/10

As is the norm for most prize figures these days, Taito uses a windowless box.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474941641.jpeg

One side panel features a large shot of Pochaco.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474941643.jpeg

The other side feature features little highlight shots of Pochaco's cute face and some of her best assets :).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474941645.jpeg

Appropriately enough, the back of the box features a shot of Pochaco's back.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474941647.jpeg

Inside the box, Pochaco was wrapped in bubble wrap and taped to a slab of cardboard as is increasingly the norm with prize figures. The box measures 25 by 13 by 10 cm, and the package weighs right around 250 grams, so shipping won't break the bank.

Posing----------8.5/10

Pochaco's pose is quite simple, but it suits her character. She's generally depicted as pretty perky and cheerful, and so the way the way she's leaning over with her arm extended definitely gives off such a vibe.

Let's have a look at her.

The pose is in character for Pochaco, and it also provides some opportunities to show off her bountiful body, so there are no complaints on this front.

*---these ratings take into account the fact this is an inexpensive prize figure and represent ratings relative to other prize figures.

Pochaco has her share of flaws which is the norm for prize figures, a couple of which are potentially distracting, but she also has some very neat features and so I'd say that her overall quality is about average for a prize figure. This also takes into account that prize figures have drastically increased in quality during the last few years.

One of the things I like about Pochaco is her cute face, and Taito did just fine there. Her eyes are quite lively, and her smile makes her look so happy! Also, this figure is supposed to depict Pochaco in winter mode, and while I don't know how many people run around in a bikini top in the middle of the winter, the little snowflakes on her top reinforce this motif and are quite cute.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474941732.jpeg

This is of course an inexpensive prize figure, and so you can see various spots in Pochaco's hair where there are little rough patches. Also, her hair is a very flat yellow, without much in the way of any highlighting but there are plenty of non-prize blonde figures with that same flaw...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474941734.jpeg

The painting where her pigtail meets her head is a little messy.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474941736.jpeg

Like her friend Sonico, Pochaco is always shown wearing headphones, and the earpieces are supposed to look soft and puffy (not unlike Pochaco herself ;) ), and Taito executes this detail reasonably well.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474941738.jpeg

Of course, one can not ignore the fact that Pochaco has a 107 cm (42 inch) bust, and the way she's leaning over further accentuates that fact. I like how her breasts aren't just spherical in shape, and I also like how you can see a little daylight there in her cleavage, as opposed to having the material in her top wedge between her breasts.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474944131.jpeg

Pochaco's back is extremely detailed! She is of course supposed to be slightly chubby, and I think Taito conveys this pretty effectively. I like the detail on her shoulder blades, and while I'm not generally a big fan of butt dimples, with Pochaco's physique, that feature makes sense. Those jean shorts are obviously snug-fitting, and I like how you can see them grabbing into her butt cheeks :). The scarf is appropriately detailed, and it is a funny accessory. After all, if you're going to wear a bikini and shorts in the winter, you still need to stay warm :).

Being a bit more critical, you can see some gaps where various pieces of Pochaco's body meet, and the tie on the bikini top is really, really small!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474944133.jpeg

Consistent with her character design, Pochaco has a nontrivial stomach, and I like how her bikini bottom peeks out from underneath her shorts. Compared to some of the Pochaco figures out there, I like how Taito didn't get carried away with the size of her stomach or her proportions in general.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474944135.jpeg

Without a doubt, the biggest defect to be found is these horrible seam/mold lines! Granted, such things are pretty common on cheap prize figures, but these really stand out.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474944137.jpeg

I like how Taito sculpted teeth into the zipper on Pochaco's shorts, but there's a great big gap where her leg attaches to the rest of her body.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474944139.jpeg

The little bow on Pochaco's bikini bottom is sufficiently non-chunky, and I like how her jean shorts have pockets.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474944175.jpeg

Low-angle shot. Note how once again you can see a gap where Pochaco's leg attaches.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474944177.jpeg

Pochaco's thighs are appropriately sized considering her body type. I also like how the backs of her knees are sculpted, but I'm not too sure how that brown paint ended up on her calf...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474944179.jpeg

Pochaco's boots are sort of...there. They're OK but nothing really special.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474944181.jpeg

Base----------6/10

The base. Let's see, it's round and it's white, and that's all I can think of to say about it.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474944183.jpeg

Scale Comparison

Pochaco is about 7 inches (17.75 cm) at her tallest point, and because she's leaning over, I estimate that if she was standing upright, she would be about 7.5 inches (19 cm) tall. That would make this particular figure pretty close to 1/8 scale.

Pochaco with one of my favorite figures, Alter's Muse of Range Murata item #186018. We need more figures with the bikini+scarf combination :). Muse-san is 1/6 scale, and you can see how she and Pochaco compare.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474946506.jpeg

Pochaco with another of my favorite figures, Orchid Seed's 1/7 scale Leviathan item #195472. They look good together with the similarity in their poses.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474946632.jpeg

I guess I must be partial to this type of leaning over pose, as Sasara Kusugawa item #4654 also has a similar pose. Sasara is 1/7 scale.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474946704.jpeg

Yet another figure with a similar pose. Kotobukiya's Mizuki Takase item #1715 is an ancient figure (released in 2004-that was just the other day :) ), and when I took this photo I had a close look at both Mizuki and Pochaco. It turns out these two figures are very similar in terms of overall finish, which goes to show how, despite their flaws, prize figures have come a long way in the last few years!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491869484.jpeg

Alter's Sanya and Eila item #315078 pair is 1/8 scale and you can see that Pochaco is similar in scale.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474946741.jpeg

Pochaco: Those ice cream sodas look yummy!

The theme of this figure is "winter", and so here is Pochaco with a character from a wintery anime, Max Factory's Makoto Sawatari item #11. The characters in Kanon are often out and about in the cold and the snow, and Makoto's choice of outfit seems a little better suited for that purpose :). Makoto is 1/8 scale, and you can see how Pochaco is similarly sized.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1474946820.jpeg

Pochaco with another Taito Pochaco item #183168. A common complaint about swimsuit figures is that they all are the same, but I think the winter theme makes this figure more than just another bikini figure!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491869295.jpeg

I am extremely vulnerable to the blonde+bikini combination, and while Yami item #137123 and Pochaco have drastically different physiques, they are two of my favorite characters and I really like both of these figures. Yami is 1/7 scale for comparison.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491869340.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

Arguments for: The "bikini and short shorts in winter" concept is quite neat, the bikini+scarf combination makes this more than just another plain ol' bikini figure, Taito does a great job realizing Pochaco's cute face, and Taito also does a good job making Pochaco appear slightly chubby without going crazy with her proportions.

Arguments against: Blah base, a couple of very distracting quality control issues (those seams on her side and the gaps between her leg and her shorts).

Overall, however, I'd say the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, as I really like this particular Pochaco. Pocahco's cuteness is her best feature, and Taito did a great job on that front. A little better quality control, and this would have been a truly outstanding figure! As is, it is still a very good figure at a reasonable price point and it's one of my favorites.

Availability (as of this writing)

Not too hard too find.

I wouldn't foresee too much difficulty if you'd like this Pochaco in your collection, and about 2000 yen ought to be sufficient to make one of these figures the newest unit in your Pochaco army. Quite a bargain, really.

victorviper (1 month ago) #20760016Pochaco's happy expression is definitely one of the best things about this figure. That's one of my favorite things about her character in general; she seems more than ease than her friend Sonico :).
All three of the Taito Pochacos came out really nice, so I wish they'd make some more. There's certainly plenty of source material to work from, after all.

Talking about it like this, really makes me wish they would pick up making merch/figures from Taruco encyclopedia #94564 , as she looks very cheerful (and a slightly bit shy) in her artworks! I'm actually surprised that more than a year after her announcement and first artworks there is no prepainted figure of her yet.

Taito seemed to have slowed down on making both Sonico's and Pochacos' in general! Maybe they oversaturated the market a bit with the high amount they made in a short time...? ;)

Maakie (1 month ago) #20755183A nice review again! I like how this Pochacho is more proportional than others, some have such tiny heads!! It's a bit of nitpicking, but I would have liked her to have a bit more of a 'belly' on this figure, though. To make her body build seem more accurate to a real person.
Still, this one is veryyy nice, especially for a prize figure. She looks so cute and cheerful! That face makes me smile. :)

jesmagicchild (2 months ago) #19769020Fun fact about this figure; you can "technically" make her a castoff.
You can remove her shorts and just leave her in the bikini.
I wouldn't do that myself, but someone on the site did.
In either case, thanks for another great review. :)

I didn't know that was possible. With the gaps my Pochaco had where the legs meet the body, I would be very hesitant to go that route. For that matter, I usually don't attempt any kind of casting off unless the figure was designed for that purpose.

Thanks for the nice comment!

Limited (2 months ago) #19779886She's a real cutie for sure, and what I feel is one of the best figure depictions of her despite being a prize figure. It's just that combination of cute and energetic, while not being too in-your-face.
Though sometimes I am a bit tempted to pull her apart and try to clean off those seam lines... but that's probably too much work for a prize figure, heh.

Given how pronounced those seams are, I couldn't imagine the cost-benefit calculation is right for trying to clean them up.

I agree that among all the Pochacos out there, this figure possibly does the best job of capturing her true character. The candidates would probably be either this one or this Vertex offering item #235623 .

Dribz (2 months ago) #19736286Great review! I don't get into a lot of the Pochaco figures, mainly because of her proportions. Often they sculpt her breasts and torso so large, her head looks ridiculously tiny in comparison, and aesthetically, I just don't care for it. These Taito prize figures, however, always look reasonable to me! They achieve making her look heftier, without sacrificing realistic proportions, and I've been very tempted to start picking some of them up (to go with my always-growing Sonico collection). Thanks for a nice review to help seal the deal!

You make a very good point. One thing all the Taito Pochacos (this one, item #199359, and item #183168) have in common is that they keep her chubby and busty look intact *without* making her breasts bigger than her head. For example, if you compare Taito's item #183168 and FREEing's item #176424, I actually prefer the Taito offering. IMO, the FREEing figure just makes her head way too small relative to the rest of her body!

If you're tempted to start a Pochaco army, you really can't go wrong with any of the Taito Pochacos. Personally, I'm looking forward to item #397160 !

supreme_tyrant (2 months ago) #19734553Well done review!
I owned it some time ago and she is beautiful!
