Alter 1/7 Scale Nishikino Maki Love Live School Idol Festival

______________________________________________________________________

Hi folks, and welcome to my review! Today, in the spirit of all that is spooky and Halloween-ish, I will be looking at Alter's latest scale figure from the Love Live School Idol Festival series, Nishikino Maki! Yes, it may still be too early to call it Halloween but to me, once the pumpkin spice lattes and other pumpkin flavoured things roll in, the entirety of October is Halloween.

I don't even drink coffee.

I'm just glad she made it on time. Anyway, enough fooling around and on to the review.

Here is Maki in her box! Standard box except the theme colour is red, like her hair! Still loving the music notes littered all over the boxes! Her signature on the back is like, illegible. Reminds me of my doctor's handwriting, can't read a thing. Her box is actually a lot narrower and taller than the other girls so far.

♬ ♪ ♫ Base ♬ ♪ ♫

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474934.jpeg

Same pearlescent base as the other girls but with a red colour scheme. The design is very nice but I still feel like the base is the weakest part of these figures, might have to add something like pumpkins to Maki's base. Maki's base is also much smaller than some of the other girls I have, which is good. Saves space.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474762.jpeg

Only one metal peg but still very sturdy!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475665238.jpeg

Maki's figure got a very mature and sophisticated feeling to it. She looks like she knows something and it's a secret!

I love how her skirt flares up, especially at the back and it makes her look very curvy. The ribbons attached to the bat at the base of her back flow follows her gait and adds dynamic.

Maki!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475475265.jpeg

Close up of Maki's face! I love her expression and how they did her eyes.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474726.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475475121.jpeg

Her outfit reminds me of goth lolita.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475475164.jpeg

The translucent black material of her top is also really nicely sculpted.

Maki's got a very nice stomach and her hip bones are subtle. Her skirt defies gravity. It pretty much just sticks out.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475475261.jpeg

The same translucent material on the upper part of her chest has like a button down pattern on it.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474760.jpeg

The lacy pattern on her skirt! There's some paint lines missing on the tiny patterns on the underskirt but that doesn't really bother me. I hope I was able to capture this on camera but the the skirt is shaded darker where it folds, and the underskirt is also shaded a bit darker nearer to the edge.

The underskirt plastic is actually flexible at the edge; you can bend the material at the very edges. The top skirt is solid.

Because her skirt is dark, it'll be easier to see lint and dust on it.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475475166.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475475168.jpeg

The stockings are printed on her legs perfectly, and the same goes for the ones on her arms. The thicker lines are sculpted so if you run your finger over them, you can feel a slight bump. Her boots are also very glossy.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475475263.jpeg

Arm stockings????

Can also see her back under the translucent cloth curving.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474720.jpeg

Her boots also have little silver bats on the dark pink bows, which are really cute.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474789.jpeg

The point where she attaches to the base. I'm not sure if it's obvious but the silver part of her boots are shaded!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475475259.jpeg

Maki's hat. I think it's called a bowler hat? The roses on her hat is the same as the ones on her skirt and top. The hat also has a magnet in it that attaches to her head. Unlike Nico's huge Christmas hat, this one is very stable and won't be easily knocked off.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474756.jpeg

Her veil taken off. The outside is really glossy. I think I might've preferred it matte but when you display her with the veil, it won't be super obvious from the front. The bat and crosses are printed on the glossy outside.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474754.jpeg

The veil on the inside is matte. The same pattern as her stockings and arms are printed on the inside.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474797.jpeg

The contrast between matte and gloss? I like running my finger along the lace border of her veil it feels really nice haha.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474793.jpeg

Maki without her veil or hat.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474791.jpeg

Even though her hair is mostly covered by the veil, it's still somewhat detailed. Some seam lines are visible though.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474940.jpeg

Her back without the veil covering it. You can see the shoulder blades through the translucent black stuff, and the frills at her shoulder and the bottom edge is really cool.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474938.jpeg

Her skirt is huge and makes her back look really curved.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474758.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475474728.jpeg

The ribbon/belt thingies have studded metal diamond things in them.

The unique and coolest feature of this figure would have to be the light up lantern. When I first preordered her, I didn't know about this feature. I don't recall Alter ever mentioning it either but I did remember thinking that if the lantern could light up, that it would complete this figure. So I was delighted when I found out this feature!

The actual light bit is found in a small plastic bag taped to the blister. Very easy to lose if not careful.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475475172.jpeg

The lantern uses TWO button cell batteries (SR521SW, also apparently known as 379). It actually didn't take me that long to find a shop selling these batteries. If you rock up to a battery or watch repair shop, they should have these in stock. Whether they'll be at a reasonable price might be another thing though that may be just the city I live in because everything is expensive here, no joke.

If you're willing to wait for delivery, I'd recommend searching and buying them from Amazon or Ebay, like I did. The instruction sheet will tell you how to set up the lantern and its circuit properly. It doesn't sting or anything when lit up so it's ok to touch! The batteries will last at least a couple of hours depending on quality.

You make her hold her lantern by sliding the handle through her left hand.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/LovelyIdiot1475664944.jpeg
Sorry about the slightly less than sharp photo, I took this photo in a darker setting so the lantern is a bit more obvious.

Ta-da!

♬ ♪ ♫ Conclusion ♬ ♪ ♫

Despite being a fan of Halloween, I initially did not like Alter's choice in Maki's outfit because I felt like there could be much nicer outfits for her. But when I got to see her in person, I decided that I was wrong and this figure is the bomb!

Her light up lantern is definitely a first for me, a neat gimmick I've never seen it in any other figure except the Yuzuruha 1/8 scale, also by alter. Another quality figure by a top notch company! She's definitely a worthy addition to anyone's collection and I'm very happy with my purchase!

Thanks for reading my humble review, I hope y'all enjoyed!

mintea (1 year ago) #15205660Making me wish I got her, but that seam on the back of her hair is quite... unfortunate looking. Still, the light up lantern, that's such a cute and fun idea.

Yes the seam line is unfortunate but I don't really mind, I personally like using her veil. I can see its off-putting for those who don't though.

Yes it's a really nice touch. The lantern is reason I think that Maki sold out so quickly honestly. She was for sale at normal discounted price right up until a few days after release, when people started posting reviews online about her lantern. It's a good kind of surprise!

Since I see you're from Europe too, where did you get her for a reasonable price?

I managed to get her for basic RRP from Nippon-Yasan, they restocked a few Friday's ago and I spotted it and ordered. Come Monday they activated my 'notify when in stock' reminder but they'd also jacked up the price by another few thousand so I managed to evade their price hike by being vigilant.

Melly123 (1 year ago) #15193751This is a great review of a figure I'm really interested in. I wasn't sure how all that paint detailing would look up close. Your photos show how good it looks. I definitely want to get her now.

Thank you! I'm glad it helped you come to a decision about her! The paintjob is very good, as expected of Alter!

Gandalf (1 year ago) #15193841I resisted picking her up initially despite really liking the design. After the initial few users reported the lamp worked it was enough to tip me into ordering, and luckily I managed to snag one at a reasonable price. Really fantastic looking figure, just working on buying some batteries now.

Haha gave in to temptation? Good. Yes the lamp is a really nice feature, was very pleasantly surprised. The batteries aren't too hard to come by, should be available in electronics stores or watch repair stores.

YuRiPa (1 year ago) #15195104Still debating on whether to get this figure... Never seen any Love Life or anything, but I've got more figures that I don't know the anime/manga/game they're from of. Pity she's so damn expensive in Europe (easily 200+ euros)...
She's so tempting to get though, love her outfit and since the lantern can actually be switched on, that's totally amazing. :-) Maybe I should just pre-order her at some of the EU stores where she's expected to arrive in December.

Well, as a person who never had an interest in idols, I was swept away by the LL figures Alter put out. Honestly, if you like Halloween then this figure is still good to get! Plus, looks like she's going up in price so if you don't like her afterwards, it shouldn't be too hard to sell. Good luck!

sailormatlac (1 year ago) #15195260Thanks for the excellent review... I'm still waiting getting mine (that's the price t opay for choosing lame shipping options!)

I had the same train of thoughts. I felt she looked like a widow and it didn't fit LL, then the design grew up on me and she's certainly as good as the other Alter's LL girls.

You're welcome and thanks for checking it out! Ahh I hope yours comes soon too!

Yes it seems like a lot of people, even if they weren't fans of Halloween, ended up liking her a lot. Widow's a pretty interesting way to describe her, though I can see why people would think that. To me she's like a cross between goth lolita and Halloween.

secretly-otaku (1 year ago) #15193702Thank you for this review. I see what you did there by saying Maki's signature reminding you of a doctor's writing

Anyway, this is just one of those figures I saw over and over for months and felt nothing for it but then out of nowhere, you have this sudden urge to get it no matter what. Luckily, even when I got late in the game, I was able to find a place where to pre-order her; however, she is expected to be in stock until December, which I'm fine with as long as they can guarantee I'll get this beauty.
Although I am fond of everything tsundere, I'm not really a Maki fan, hence my initial lack of interest. But after I saw her painted, I was super impressed. I mean, I do appreciate the amazing job done by Alter. The only thing it bothers me a bit is the veil, since I believe the glossy finish was unnecesary and they should have used the matte finish both in the inside and outside, but other than that, this is a superb figure in every level. I can't wait to get her!

You're welcome! Thanks for checking it out!

Hehe! Yes! I was like "omg that's just so like Maki cos she comes from a family of doctors" I know what you mean when you suddenly get this urge to buy a figure you didn't like before. Can't say I felt that for Maki though, I like her as a character so I was like ehhh WHY NOT. Oh it'll be like Halloween in December for you... Halloween during Christmas??? I think I agree with you on the glossy coating, but I can see why they'd do it. It's more protective than a matte covering, and it looks cleaner than matte finishes.
