Racing Miku Designs

EDIT: Apparently I need to clarify that this is my opinion and I don't think anyone has to agree with me. There is no 'best' Racing Miku design, only individual favorites.

So many people have been saying they hate the 2016 Racing Miku design because it's "uninspired" or something similar... This is just my opinion, but I feel like 2016 is one of the best- if not the best- Racing Miku designs yet. It's very different from the previous designs in a lot of ways...

For one, it makes use of complimenting colors. The last time a design prominently used orange and red, the compliments of Miku's palette, was... 2010. 2015 made a little use of them, but they were still little more than minor accents. Now it's big! It's important! It really brings out the other colors in the design.

Just look at the designs from 2011-2014. Their color schemes are almost formulaic... Black. White. Hair color. Maybe pink. Red from the Goodsmile logo Not to mention they're all swimsuit-like one pieces. Sure, they're charming, but they hardly actually deviate from each other.

Also, have you guys ever seen the 2009 and 2013 designs? I can't knock 2009 too hard since she was the first one, but that one was wicked bland.

2013 was just regular Miku but ramped up, which I think is just as bad as being bland.

(Before you crucify me for being critical of the 2014 design, just take a look at how simple it actually is. It's just the wheels and hair that make her look complicated. No hate to 2014. It's one of my favorites.)

This year's edition keeps the elements that prevent it from just being a new design altogether while being able to set itself aside from the rest.

It utilizes the main body being largely white and she still has the Goodsmile Racing logo on her chest and those ballroom gloves and thigh highs. She has (colorful!!!) hair that gives the impression of motion. And the speedy flame motif... Not to mention the rainbow scattering on her hair reminds me of how different light wavelengths travel at different speeds. She's traveling at the speed of light! And while 2015 was the first real dress in the series(2011 and 2012 do not count since the skirt is see-through), having 2016's dress is still refreshing. We get shorts underneath too! When did we last get shorts? 2010.

People also complain that her faceplates look smushed, mostly the open-mouthed Figma faceplate. While there is a crowding issue, do you remember the 2013 Nendoroid? There was hardly any room for a face under those bangs.

TL;DR- In my opinion, 2016 Racing Miku is a thing of beauty because it is so different from previous generations.

2017 update- Okay, I might be biased because I don't like Tony Taka's """art style""" (Same Face Syndrome is not an art style), but I can't knock the design. Actually, it's pretty cute. I'm a real sucker for frills and flowers...

We're back to only a little use of complimenting colors, but I like the range of shades from pale yellow to spring green to sky blue. It's got a much more gentle appearance than 2016. It's still got all the right elements (white body, GSR logo on the chest, thigh highs, ballroom gloves...) and it's another dress!!

I'm happy to see this trend of GSR expanding Racing Miku designs beyond 2011 knockoffs and feel the design is an appropriate followup to the energetic, warm design from 2016.

Also thank God they changed the eyes on the Nendoroid holy cripes.

Not at all meaning any harm but I think your article would benefit from linking and specifying which designs are which and maybe including pictures (like including links to official ones if you don't have personal ones) for reference.
I'm sorry if that sounds lazy of me but while I don't follow Miku news at all this sort of article is still interesting and makes me curious...but it's a bit of uncertain search for me trying to sift through all the Mikus to find which you might mean ;; (and on mobile it's hard to do searches and read an article at the same time ;v;)

I think I found some of them but I'm confused by the EV MIRAI (?) figma versions (ITEM #236262 and ITEM #198415) as well sharing years with other designs? But those designs are pretty cute, Miku looks sporty and out of the norm and I actually like her. The princess-knight design for 2015 ITEM #272970 ? is neat and I like the use of white and gold in the outfit - I'm not sure I'm too keen on the 2016 design if I'm looking at the right one but I can understand where you're coming from with your points. I guess just a difference of taste ^^

Still don't like the 2016 version, haha. Using complementary doesn't automatically make it good. Take away the colors, and it's as "uninspired" as the others, or more. I also don't like the saturated red they used.

The same way using complementary doesn't make it good, having a less colorful palette doesn't make it bad. Imo, the 2014 design ITEM #198541 was the best one – it's simple, it's elegant. I love how it has just some accents in pink to make it pop.

In the end, it's all up to each person's preference.

i've seen a lot of people disliking this years' version... I think its because of the colour... well, all the other 5 has blues and greens and this year has warm colour... for me is one of the best design so far. I loved everything on her. The hair coming from a cold colour and ending in a warm colour became very pleasant for the eyes. I loved her FP as well :D the cheering expression is the cutest one :D in fact, the 2012 and 2016 designs looks more miku's age, 16 years old :)

I have 3 versions of her. the 2012, 2013 Mirai and 2015 :) i love the 2015 so far, but im sure when i get the 2016, she will be the one i love the most :) if the contest opens in 2017 for the next Racing miku, i will create a design too :)

I'm somewhat agreed.
I personally like GSC Racing Miku 2014, not as a Miku figure, but as a figure in general. The pose is dynamic, the expression captivating and the execution/sculpt stellar. However- it's just not Miku-esque, and other Racing Miku designs (2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016) do this much better. If I had to choose between getting one and not the others though, GSC's 2014 would eek its way to the front.

MaritimeBlue (1 year ago) #15623365I mean, I mostly appreciate how different the clothes are from any of the other editions. Simple didn't necessarily mean bad. I can definitely see where you're coming from, though! 10, 14 and 15 are my favorites other than 16.
The EV Mirai versions are really cool! She looks more like an actual racer in those.

Yes, she is certainly different from previous designs. 16 isn't a personal favourite, but I do appreciate the design. But I don't really like how bulky they made her hair in some of the figures. I do wish they'd go more into the racer/mechanic direction rather than just race queens, so I'm glad there's at least the mirai versions.

Josine (1 year ago) #15623372I really like Racing Miku's due to their futuristic look, it just appeals to me. I especially like ITEM #236204 (the only Miku I own) - she looks really cool with the boots and the jacket and the helmet! I also like ITEM #144414 - nice futuristic design and I really dig the shiny paint and the metallic parts ^^ The 2016 design I think is quite nice as well, the complementary colours look really good and I really like what they did with her hair :) I'm curious how ITEM #321897 will turn out!
Yeah, I'm really excited to see the scale all painted too. She's going to be so prettyyy!

Glueblade (1 year ago) #15623307I'm sort of so-so on the 2016 design. I definitely agree with you about the colours. The colours are well-matched and lively, but I find the design of the clothing itself really bland. It's cute, but there's very little motion and few details. I also agree about the older Racing Mikus being pretty boring. my favourites are 2010, 2014 and 2015. For 2014, I think the concept of the turbines is very original and was executed very well. For 2015, I love the theme and all the figures of her turned out really adorable. I'm also a fan of the ones that look more sporty and less like a swimsuit, like ITEM #396897

SerpentyleTorc (1 year ago) #15623355I agree with you, it's a very lovely design. My main problem is it has almost nothing to do with racing. Well maybe Race Queen. (also the price...)
My fav were the two Ev Mirai designs because they had a kind of in the middle of the action look to them. (hoping for a rugged, tired, mechanic Miku, with dirt and oil streaks, swapping out tires on the track.)
The 2016 face tho. uuu so cute and squishable. Round cheek Miku is best Miku.

Absolutely! A tire-pit related design would be awesome. We got kind of a mechanic thing in 2010, but it didn't have any kind of roughed up feel to it. 2010 is honestly still one of my favorites

Her face is SOOOO CUUUUTE! Lookat those cheeks! Lookat those eyes! She looks so energetic and friendly!
