iFirst 4 Figures: Breath of the Wild Link9.67/10    Readers' selection (2017-03-05)

Friends, fellow collectors, Internet strangers, today I share with you a review for a statue many of us have been anticipating to receive as much as the game it is based on. Today I review this 10 inch PVC statue of Link from "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" by First 4 Figures! This is the part where you cheer and cry with joy.

For people living in North America like myself, this statue is exclusively sold at Best Buy. Only the United States branch of Best Buy has this item open for order at the moment, but Canada's branch will be opening orders for the statue fairly soon.

As you can see, this is a very lovely box clearly made for those that prefer to display their collectables inside the box. There is a spacious window showing the contents inside along with a pretty wild lands background. Let's take a closer look at the box before I take the statue out.

There is a nicely styled logo print in the lower left corner.

If you missed that F4F logo, there is another one in the form of a shiny holographic sticker in the upright corner. I point these out because several stores that listed this product did not include F4F in the product description during the early stages of pre-orders. A lot of people were annoyed by that.

On the lower right, we have a finely cut and printed visual of the official illustration the statue is based on.

On the back, you have a brief synopsis of the game along with the staff of F4F behind the production of this statue. If you are a member of the F4F Official Collector's Club on Facebook, you may notice some familiar names on here.

Nico:
"Stop stalling and take the statue out! I want a good look at it now!"

"Ooooh yes! This is the sexiest version of Link yet! I just found my future husband!"

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488626393.jpeg

Me:
"Wow! I had no idea you had the hots for Link."

Nico:
"How can I not? Look at him! That thick golden hair. That manly chiseled chin. Those eyes blue like sapphires! That tight toned body! This is a premium slice of beefcake!"

"AND THAT BOOTY!
That's a hero's booty, right there! A booty that just won't quit!"

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488626397.jpeg

"There is nothing I wouldn't let Link do to me! NOTHING!"

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488626395.jpeg

Me:
"Ok! Ok! Calm down, Nico. Geez."

Nico:
"You know what? I'm taking this statue. A statue of Link this sexy is only good enough for the #1 idol in the universe. Me!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488626399.jpeg

Me:
"Hey! Come back here with that statue! I still need to finish this review!"

Nico:
"Ok. Fine. But I'm taking it when you're done and you can't stop me."

Well.... Now that we got whatever the heck just happened out of the way, let's take a closer look at the statue.

First we have a vibrant base with a Sheikah Technology theme. You see the Sheikah symbol with what looks like circuit lines around it. On the rim, there are some mystical runes.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488630757.jpeg

This is a nice balance between the mystic and technological elements of the game's theme. This does not have an LED feature like most F4F statues do, but I bet the would look amazing if the blue parts would light up.

Link is perched on this black piece of plastic. I was concerned about the statue leaning, but Link seems to be mounted solidly in place.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488632235.jpeg

I do have one small criticism about this though. I would have preferred this piece of plastic be clear instead of a solid color. The pose illustrates him preparing to launch his arrow while he is midair after a jump. This mount being a solid color detracts away from that and gives the impression of balancing on one foot rather than being in mid-jump. But this a minor thing. It doesn't make the statue any less enjoyable.

Link's boots and pants are painted nicely. They have some excellent shading done to give them a natural leather and cloth appearance.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488592891.jpeg

I really like the detail in his weapons. This is a good angle to display him in because you get a clear view of the various weapons he has equipped. Bow & arrow, arrow quiver, sword and a shield. He is armed to the teeth and ready for anything.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488637533.jpeg

He also comes equipped with the Sheikah Slate, one of the signature items of the new game.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488632233.jpeg

I am really looking forward to exploring the ancient technology lore of this game. It seriously gives me some optimism we might see a title based in a more technologically advanced world in the future. Although I am not sure how that would work out. That was actually one of the original elements scrapped from Breath of the Wild in its early development. There were even some sketches done with Link standing in front of an alien spaceship.

When you zoom in on the statue with a macro lens, you can see how detailed its parts are. Take a look at these close ups of the bow and arrows.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488592893.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488592651.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488592653.jpeg

The patterns and lines on this statue are amazingly clean and even considering how thin and small they are in person.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488592889.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488592655.jpeg

As you can see in the last picture, the string of the bow and arrow is an actual fabric rope, not a long piece of PVC. That adds extra realism to the statue. I imagine it would also make it easier to repair should something happen to the string.

I am very impressed with the face. They sculpted the face with a realistic skin texture, which looks even more realistic when zoomed in. The eyes are cleanly crafted and even have some of those lines at the bottom of the sclera like you would see in an actual eye. Or maybe that's the paint cracking. I can't really tell. But whatever; it works for the design. :D

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488630755.jpeg

I'll admit that the hair looks pretty ugly zoomed in by 250%. With this much zoom, it has a weird sponge-like look to it. But the hair looks like a pretty standard level sculpt in person. Not amazing, but certainly not bad either. This is a lesson I learned recently. a macro lens has an uncanny ability to make a figure look uglier than it really is because you can see all kinds of details the human eye can't see on its own. (>.>)

So here are my overall thoughts about this figure. This is an excellent statue and I would say easily one of the top 10 best TLOZ figures on the market today. It is also considerably more affordable compared to the company's usual 1/4 scale polystone statues. Speaking of which, you get more than just the statue when you purchase this product.

You also get this little leaflet. Inside is a code you can redeem on the F4F website to get 500 store credit points. I will use mine for my payment of Amaterasu Exclusive Edition in a few days.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/ChocolateSpider1488630759.jpeg

My final verdict? Buy this statue right flipping now! This statue is an absolute must have for any Nintendo fan. Its price is quite a bargain for the quality and size of the product. Plus everyone loves $5 off a purchase.

Whatever your budget may be right now, ignore it and buy this statue. Don't hesitate. Just give F4F your money and be happy like I am. But before you make your purchase, check to see if any discount promotions are being offered by Visa Checkout. I purchased mine with a $25 off discount for using that as the checkout method at the time.

Thanks for the review. This Link looks very well and love the details on them. I'm impressed by the high resolution shots of the smaller parts of this figure. I think the price is indeed fair if you look to the scale and details.

Carrotina (3 months ago) #18725657I'm sorry but this is no where near Alter or GSC quality, not that you said that, but 10/10 for some of those categories just shows your either a fanboy of Nintendo, F4F or both.
Agreed. It's not a bad piece, but for that price; I'd rather get a Kotobukiya figure.

Stalgonoff (3 months ago) #18725527Thanks, that's a good tip. Hopefully they do that in Canada too. However, I'm on disability wage compensation right now due to an "impressive" amount/severity of fractures in my ankle. I find it rather disconcerting that 3-4 medical professionals have all said it's impressive to me ;_;. So I'm bed ridden for at least another month before I can even start physio. Right now I'm just saving all my money with the one preorder I already had (and had saved the money for) and the new releases of the English translations of light novels / manga I have ordered since quite frankly being in bed 24/7 is very boring.
The plus side is I get to look at my collection whenever I want since it's right in front of my bed.

Ouch. I hope you feel better soon. And yes, that does sound nice. It also gives you more time to play video games that you need to catch up on. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. :D

Just because some companies have products more complex and refined does not mean other products are not good. Also, I am pretty sure I have never denied being a Nintendo fanboy. :3

But in hindsight, you may have a point on the scores. After reading through my article again, I think I was in fact a tad too generous with some of my scores due to the hype. I have lowered painting and sculpt to 9/10. :3
