iApril Loot---Better Late than Never!n/a    Readers' selection (2017-05-01)

April's loot contains a diverse mix of offerings-a unique Native figure, an artbook, a prize figure, an impulse buy, and a figure I decided to pick up after one of my April preorders got bumped back to May. Sounds interesting, right?

With the arrival of an AmiAmi box yesterday, April's loot is complete. We've got three figures, a book, and a little flat packet containing something...

It just wouldn't be a new month without a new AmiAmi postcard, and this month's entry features a guest artist. I'm a little ashamed to admit that I didn't know too much about the artist bkub encyclopedia #27840, but seeing how well-received his Pop Team Epic manga seems to be, I might have to check it out!

The first item in this loot is an old artbook which must have got a reprinting, 100 Masters of Bishojo Painting item #43583. I'd long wanted a copy of this book, but it appeared to be out of print. However, one day Amazon reported it as back in stock, so I figured I'd better grab one.

This artbook was first published way back in 2009, and back then some of the artists in this book were sort of unknown to me. However, figure collecting has gotten me much better acquainted with many of the artists, including Misaki Kurehito and Oyari Ashito.

It's also neat to see some older Tsuji Santa artworks!

And of course, one of my favorite artists makes an appearance, too.

That little packet contains a postcard set item #527073 of my favorite Senran Kagura character, the charmingly pervy onee-chan Katsuragi.

This was a impulse buy and throw-in with my April AmiAmi order, as the postcard set was only 1200 yen. Now, I just need to figure out some creative way to display these postcards.

Now, on to the figure loot. First up is a figure of one of my favorite characters, Pulchra's Mikan Yuuki item #331830. I did not preorder Mikan, as I've never bought a Pulchra figure before and didn't know what to expect. But after Kotobukiya's Sakura-chan item #455586 got delayed to May, my April figure budget gained some maneuvering room, and a bunch of these Mikans showed up on AmiAmi, so I figured what the heck.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1493417851.jpeg

Looking at her in person, Mikan has some definite QC issues, and so I can see why there have been so many of these figures showing up pre-owned less than a month after release. However, there really aren't that many Mikan figures to be had and this one does have some interesting features, so I don't have any regrets about getting her.

My current Mikan sub-collection. Hopefully, this item #464638 Mikan won't be delayed and will be joining them at the end of the summer!

Next up is a FuRyu prize figure from one of my very favorite anime, Sakura Kinomoto in her getup from the second season's opening animation item #289068.

One thing I like about these FuRyu Sakuras is that most of the boxes feature large panels of character art!

I initially did not get this figure since I already had a Plum figure item #270949 of Sakura in this same outfit, and at the time FuRyu was really churning out Sakura figures. However, they haven't produced too many new Sakuras lately, so I figured I might as well see if I can cobble together a compete set. I also like how the FuRyu Sakura gives the outfit a little more variation in color; the orangish-yellow parts of the outfit just makes the FuRyu figure pop a little more IMO.

I've been very happy with all these FuRyu Sakuras, and in some ways I like this Sakura better than the (more expensive!) Plum offering. The way she's holding that cherry blossom petal in her hand is cute, too :).

Finally, this post was titled "Better Late than Never", and that describes the final item in this loot, which in retrospect I should have gotten a long, long time ago, an old Native figure of Nana Chigusa item #42096. I thought about getting this figure when it was first released, but the dollar/yen exchange rate was terrible back then and so I ultimately passed on her. I remember Nana being listed at a US shop for $139, and I thought that price was outrageously expensive. However, fast forward to 2017, and $139 for a 1/6 scale figure no longer seems so outlandish. Funny how times change...

Anyway, I was browsing AmiAmi one morning while they were doing their daily update, and there she was! Nana was B/B, but I knew she wouldn't last long, and sometimes in this hobby you just have to click the add to cart button now and worry about it later. Plus, I've never had a problem with B-grade items from AmiAmi, anyway.

Seeing Nana in person, I don't know what possessed me to not get this figure a long time ago!

This was a B/B figure, and the reason for the B-grade was that Nana had a little spot where paint had transferred from somewhere onto her hip. She'd clearly been unboxed, so I guess a part of some other figure must have been in contact with that spot for a long time! Fortunately, the magic eraser treatment worked like a charm, and that transfer cleaned up easily.

I like the sweet+sexy combination of the hair bow and the thong. Also, once item #464891 and item #520673 get released, I might need a dedicated red latex shelf :).

This is a rather unique Native figure, as this figure along with her black color variant item #62024 and Native's other Nana offering item #78681 are to my knowledge the only figures made by that company that have no cast-off features. I wouldn't mind seeing Native make more such figures that don't fully cross that line into 18+ territory.

So that's it for April's loot, and as always...

THANKS FOR READING!

POLL TIME!

Nana Chigusa is sort of a unique Native figure, and so the question is this:

Should Native make more figures that don't fully go into 18+ territory?

  • 76.64%
Sure, they should mix it up a little now and then!
  • 23.36%
Nah. That sort of defeats the whole point of having a Native figure...

10 bucks for all those postcards was a pretty good deal. Now I just have to figure out some way to display them.

TomTheCat (2 months ago) #20575041I saw that red Nana a couple of years ago in a German online shop for 80 Euros. Even then that would have been outrageously cheap, but I had just bought the black version, so I let this opportunity pass. It's now sold out of course >_<

Wow, that is a good deal (this one set me back 12000 yen). I had the black version on my wishlist for a long time, but over time I started to favor this red one and fortunately that's the one that showed up on AmiAmi.

solluxcaptor (2 months ago) #20553850Nice loot! I love the artworks in that book that you got and admittedly I don't know who Mikan is but I LOVE the figures you have of her, so cute! I'll have to check out her origins a little :D

Mikan is what I would call a "modern imouto" character. She's cute, smart, and independent and she has a little bit of a brother complex. Kirino would approve, I think.

halfnote (2 months ago) #20541597This is full of great stuff, but that Nana figure is top notch!

Even back in 2011, Native was definitely putting out great figures, and Nana is pretty awesome.

Yarrowia (2 months ago) #20547503Sakura, Mikan and Katsuragi... I see you are a man of great taste! Nice loot!

It's funny, as I'm not a huge To Love Ru fan, but I like many of the characters from that series (Mikan, Yami, and Haruna in particular). I guess I just like Yabuki Kentarou's character designs.

Card Captor Sakura has long been one of my favorite anime, and Katsuragi checks a lot of my moe boxes. I like busty blonde characters (Sena Kashiwazaki, Sasara Kusugawa, Pochaco), and I always liked Katsuragi's good-natured yet lecherous personality :).
