Hello everyone, I'm Shashin and I collect dakimakura covers. I've been in the hobby for about three years now and my love for it continues to grow. Unfortunately, it's a largely misunderstood and hard to get into hobby outside of Japan, for a multitude of reasons. Mostly, even among anime fans, there seems to be a stigma when it comes to dakimakura covers; they're seen a something that only the creepiest of otaku would collect. While I must admit that it can be the case, such as the man who married a Fate dakimakura cover, it isn't like that for most collectors. I personally just enjoy collecting them for the beautiful art they have; I haven't regularly slept with a dakimakura cover in about two years.
I think the other major factor that keeps people from the hobby would be the price. It's a sad reality that the vast majority of dakimakura covers tend to retail for a good deal over $100. Not many people are willing to spend that kind of money on one, much less start an entire collection.
It's unlikely this post will change the opinions someone already has about dakimakura covers or their users, but I'm just here to share some beautiful artwork and maybe shed some light on dakimakura covers as someone on the other side of the line.
I recently started a series like this over at figure.fm, where I talk a bit about a specific dakimakura circle/artist and then post some of their work. I decided to try my luck here, in the hope that I'd spread some dakimakura love to more people. Today I've chosen two covers done by Sayori under the circle Neko Works. I don't know much about Sayori personally, just that she is the creator of two original characters, Chocolate and Vanilla, and that she has done a few doujinshi using them. Her art is beautiful, with a lot of attention to detail and I hope that it shows here today.
Both of these covers were done by Sayori/Neko Works, and sold by Moejinja. I believe they were first released in 2009 but have since be resold several times. The material is Toray Industries 2way-tricot.
