iHow to present your hobbyn/a

Hey there!
As we all share the same hobby, I thought this would be the good place to ask such a question.
Here's a part of my life to explain what I mean.

So, I have, like everyone single one of you, friends. Family too. Sometimes, we have different ways of seeing things, and different passions. My passion is, of course, figure collecting and everything anime and manga related.
I have recently bought Inori ( item #78618 ) and as soon as I received her, put her in my detolf. Then I invited on of my friend to sleepover.
She has often stated how my figures looked like prostitute (because of their short skirts) ,she was half kidding by the way, but still, she wasn't the only one to say so unfortunately...
This case was different. She said that my figure was really indecent and that she was discouraged that I bought such a thing.
I can't see anything wrong with my figure, but it caused me great discomfort.

She is one of my most opened minded friend in terms of my hobby, so I can't imagine what my other friends will say about it.
And I won't ever bother to talk about my family.

I'm a little bit stressed by it to be honest.
I love my figures and will never stop doing so, but how to make people understand?
How to present your hobby in a way that all that money spend on figures will look good and actually interesting?
How to make understand my friends and family that I'm not a pervert ... (not even joking lol)

Thanks!

I feel the same way...actually only one of my friends knows about my hobby and the others don't. My friend is really open about it, she lived in Japan for half her life so we're pretty much on the same page. My family thinks of anime and manga more of a distraction then a hobby. It's hard to explain what my hobby is to other people...so I really just don't. But some people do know a lot -about it, so I just talk to those people about my hobby. If anyone complains that my figure is let's say, "inappropriate" or that I'm a "pervert" because I like figures even if they have short skirts than I just tell them to look at the amazing quality rather then the outfit

If you can't deal with them verbally...

Like most already said, who cares what they think.

That article was right down my alley. Thanks for the share because that's a total boost in confidence over here in the land of Shirt. I know my ego can be worn on my chest sometimes and I gotta stop that.. but lol it's fun as I don't know what to lay it on people when they do stupid stuff. loool! Much gratitude to you for the compliments too.

Arie (6 months ago) #1210392Omg I just loved your reply! Thank you so much for your support! I wish I could be more like you haha!
You made it sound like I was going to war or something "read your opponent" LOL
but yeah I totally agree with you, if they've got nothing better to do than complain and give you weird looks when you're opening awesome figures, then their lives are truly miserable!

And thank you again!

No way, honorable mention? Hahaha that's great! But sometimes you really have to let 'em know just like in that article.
"Don't care n' swear." (Totally just made that up. XD)
I'm telling you. If you do what that article states, you'll have no problem dealing with people on a verbal and mental level. I kinda learned on my own like the author did.

In a way, it is a little like war since you are defending not only your hobby, but your pride, self image, projected image in their heads, and your dignity. :]

I bet they're trying to discourage me because I have that great hobby and they don't lol.

That's what I'm talking about.

SpaceDyeVest (6 months ago) #1210674I am not sure why anyone would make an assumption that someone who collects figurines is a "pervert." Like iTheShirt said, anyone who makes that assumption is the one who probably has some perverted thoughts, not you. Further, why does anyone care what someone else does for fun, as long as that person isn't hurting anyone or hurting him/herself? I so don't care what anyone does, nor do I even have an opinion on it. As long as this person isn't hurting anyone else, I wouldn't even question it. I know a dude who rescued two baby pigeons and they grew up in his apartment and he ended up keeping them. They fly around and fetch plastic forks in their little beaks and bring them to this man (I thought that was hilarious). They sound like some cool ass pigeons. He loves them and that's his business. Why should I, or anyone, give a shit about this? He has to clean up their poop and their feathers, not me. No one should have an opinion on what people do. And we're talking about collecting art here....something that is usually considered to be high-brow and cultured. If anything, such a hobby should be revered and respected, not mocked and degraded.
Oh my, that pigeon story is so cute! What a great guy he is! Rescuing them and after letting them live with him, that's so nice! <3
And yeah after all why would they care?

iTheShirt (6 months ago) #1209484Ahh.. this seems to be so much more common than I thought. I go through this all the time. Nobody really liked my hobby until they saw that they're words really didn't stop me from collecting them. Check this out.

To answer your three questions directly:
  • You don't need them to understand. You need them to learn when to keep their mouth shut when they don't have anything constructive to say. lmao They will warm up to the hobby soon enough.
  • Read your opponent. If you pay attention to who you are presenting to, go with something more their flavor to draw them in, and then lightly reveal some of the "variation" in your collection to surprise them a little. My friend who plays Skyrim all day but likes Persona a little. I sent him the all official shots of the new Labrys figma
  • [item #117923] and he said:
"I have to admit, these are really cool. The third pose is really dynamic. Far less rapey than the stuff you send me normally, lmao. I can dig it." <-I love this guy. So honest.
Lmao I send him lots of pictures of the lolis and stuff. He knows I'm straight but I'm a little "out there" but still coolbeans with me because I'm not some weirdo. I just have my preferences. (He don't know everything doe~ :3 Petanko ftw)
  • Tell them you aren't a pervert. If they don't believe you, tell them they are perverts for thinking naughty things as soon as they saw it. Reverse psychology. "I'm completely innocent. Why you gotta be all nasty and think like that? You should be ashamed of yourself!", I'd say. LOL! I'm full of 'em.

Well there you have it. All in a nutshell, this is me when my co-workers are leading miserable lives while I'm opening figures on the table:

Great article! I have this dilemma but I have a few things going for me. A few friends who actually collect also, a mother and sister who appreciate great art (since we all draw), and a potty mouth. XD LOL
Good Luck!

why bother? if theyre true friends they wont mind they might not ''like'' it but they go like ok w/e :P like my bestie did she doesnt like them and made fun of one but we had lots of fun neverthless (like I played along with a spanking sticker on her face of the nana bondage figure had 10 stickers anyways)
I always tell ppl in my eyes it is art, may it be nude art ( no one complains about a painting hanging on the wall with a naked woman or man on it either right?) or just regular a lot of work has been put into it ! so it is a piece of art

and familiy usually doesnt understand well mine does accept it and they like it (except for some of my native figures they consider that childporn lol like shoujo S ) or else if youre so stuck on their opinions find a proper place to stall them that way no one immediatluy spots them but youre able to see them!

like I hae with my native figs theyre next to my bed while the first thing you see is my big closet with my regular figs and not the detolf next to my bed :) but im able to look and admire them
