iMF, Alter and GSC - disappointmentn/a

I've posted this in the Q&A club, but only Aeonblue answered. I want more opinions/views/replies so here we go...

We have the top 3 manufacturing companies - Max Factory, Alter and GSC. (where do I base that? they mostly dominates the top100) And we all know that prototypes and released product have a few discrepancies. With that, I would like to ask - 3 questions this time:

1. What figure among the BIG 3 is a disappointment where release is different/inferior to the prototype?

2. What figure among the BIG 3 is OK/can be passed even though it has discrepancies? (where most people think that they are just minor even though there's change from the prototype - not an improvement but a change)

3. Have you ever encountered a figure you got that is different from the figure that your friend got (like sculpt of hair etc? Basically, no-2-figures-are-the-same situation and how did that made you feel?

For question 1: I can name a few like GSC's Rin Tohsaka - due to glossiness and hair color along with GSC's Inori - due to facial expression and coloring.

I can't answer Q2 and Q3 as I only have a few figs though haha

Any other opinions?

Seasonreaper (1 year ago) #1550084I can't say I've had any disappointments myself. I probably would've done with Alter's Chua Churam due to her being tiny, but I picked her up in a shop so could see her size firsthand before purchasing so it didn't bother me, plus she's gorgeous anyway. GSC's Kyouko (item #97172) was a slight disappointment due to some messy painting on the ruffles at the back of her dress, but the rest of the figure was lovely and her posing and expression are great, despite some people moaning about her fang.
Alter have been pretty much perfect from what I've seen. I still regard them as the best company around, although their tendency to delay everything for months on end is starting to get a little crazy. Still, I'd rather have 3 months of delay for a fantastic product than have something released on time with painting discrepancies or flawed sculpting.
I can't really say about #3. As far as I'm aware, the only figures I share with friends are the Kaiji, BRS and Sayaka Miki figmas, plus I've only seen the first two in person. In both cases there's very little difference between them.
I also share the Cure Black and Cure White S.H. Figuarts with a friend, but those aren't from the big 3.
Personally I'd rank Kotobukiya up with the big 3 these days too. They're getting pretty damn good, plus their cu-poche line is looking very promising from what I've seen, although my Madoka hasn't arrived yet to confirm.

A... yes, Kotobukiya should also be part of it but I heard from a friend that it's a hit or miss one...

Max Factory and GSC belong to the same company. There is no difference.

But to answer your questions, in my experiences:
1) I actually didn't not have an issue with GSC's Inori. She's one of my more liked figures from GSC (though I did sell her to my friend in the end). I tend to be picky to begin with, so I'm not faced with disappointment often (or ever really). If I had to choose a figure, I would have to say GSC's Madokami. I think mine is without (noticeable) QC defects, but something about her was extremely underwhelming when I received her. She was incredibly frustrating to put together (her wings) and over time, I have found myself falling out of love with the figure. Probably isn't GSC's fault really (except the assembly process), but those are my feelings.

2) All the figures I own, quality-wise, are within that range of accepted perfection, but if I had to pick the figures that I would still keep even with issues, it would be: Max Factory's Seragaki Aoba, Alter's Clalaclan, and GSC's Saber Motored Cuirassier. But that comes down more to characters/designs I'm attached to rather than company....

3) Hmmm my roommate and I both have owned Alter's Dizzy and we saw slight shading paint differences, but with sprayed paint, that's pretty normal. There's also some spray paint/shading differences on our Madokamis as well, but within an acceptable range. My roommate's Madokami was a LOT easier to assemble (which I cursed him and GSC for). Difference in sculpt or completely off painting (like on Rin's beads) is where I would really have an issue. I would be beyond annoyed for one thing, that I paid over $100 for a figure that was not properly QC'd, and then I'd probably get rid of it. It would certainly tarnish my opinion of a company and I would become wary of buying from them again. Luckily for the Big 3, it hasn't happened to me yet.

1. I bought GSC's Inori for my boyfriend, but when I received her I was even slightly ashamed of gifting her. Her face just looked so different and I was afraid he wouldn't like it.. Gladly he did it.
Nendoroid-wise only the huge delay of Snow Miku 2012 and how different the twintails looked.. Never had any other problems with their scaled figures (I don't have many though) or their nendoroids.

Max Factory: I only own figma Ultimate Madoka, and she's beautiful, although one sad thing was that one part of her hair just snapped off. I ordered the Madoka PSP game with figma school uniform Madoka, but when I received her, her colours were so ugly and flat, that I sold her again right away.

Alter: Only have one figure of them, and it's over 6 years old, but that one was a disappointment (flat colours, different face, horrible base). Whenever I see user pics of their newer products though, they look amazing, so I'm sure they improved much! Now just waiting for Suzuha..

2. The hair colour of GSC's 1/8 Sayaka. I actually liked it much better, even though many people raged about it!

3. Only encountered the same nendoroids, but they always looked equal..

From Alter.. no, not they can delay a lot but when you receive what is see is definitely what you get.. best company ^^

GSC... bitch please, the company is making a lot of mistakes in my opinion a lot of their real products are different from the proto, Inori is one of their worst, Godoka is kind different also although I still think is a very beautiful scale

MF... hum.. nothing to complain about

1. I've yet to be disappointed by Max Factory. I don't have enough GSC scales to make a certain judgement, but what I have from them is good (I love my Godoka). Alter is where I get disappointed. Their older figures (anywhere from 2 or more years old) are so fantastic. (My Kud and Vivio are gorgeous, and pictures of others I've seen are great.) Menma and Ohana? Not so much. The sculpt isn't as good, and overall it's just underwhelming.

2. I don't know, Godoka had a couple complainers. Can't really think of anything else.

3. I don't have any friends that collect expensive figures, just prize and trading figures.

Rin Tohsaka was a fantastic figure. The first release is actually sought after more.

1. Has to be GSC. Not even going into scales, just things like Figmas and Nendoroids, I've had to contact GSC numerous times for replacement parts for limited/exclusive figures. It's amazing all the standards I get are fine, but as soon as I get a limited or exclusive, I'm mailing the same day usually to the point where I expect to be mailing them when I hear a package of GSC is being shipped to me. Moving onto scales, I personally haven't had any problems with scales I've had since I don't really buy many, but I've seen the complaints from others on this site, and I've seen some of the figures in person and I feel honestly that some of the older figures were executed better in terms of painting (e.g. I saw a Godoka in person and I saw noticeable paint defects but I have a 2010 Racing Miku and she is perfect). I'm only going to get into the painting though; other than that I personally have nothing to say ^^;;;

2. The one MF figure and few Alters I have are all perfect. ^^;;;

3. Not from personal experience but obviously there might be painting differences between figures just because...I mean they all can't be exactly the same this way down to a T.
