Rei Ayanami Customa P

DaevaDaeva4 years agoReview
This time I'll entertain you guys with a brief review on one of my last acquired action figures of Rei Ayanami, the Customa P released by Volks.

Scuplted by Misaki Serika, a Volks' big name who signed a good number of "regular" figures too, this ode to moe in posable and painted PVC came in nothing but her box (no extra parts, no pedestal, nothing XD) for 6800 yen back in 2006.
I managed to get this used for less than 2400 yen (extra fees, commissions and local shipping included) at an auction and I still felt as if I was robbed XD
Yet, playing with her, I somehow managed to revalue her worth.

But let's go in order!

Here's a clear close-up of her face.
I found this moe look quite interesting, and also if I'm not a fan of the genre, I thought that it would have been fun to get a Rei in this version.

Somehow her face is quite rounder than it looked in promotional pics.
It's also worth to mention that the painting is less than perfect (but that's a given with industrial products), and the parts don't look perfectly assembled, expecially her hair... But since I bought this as used item (even if still packed and sealed in its box) I can't really complain about it...
I liked the contrast between opaque (hair, face) and glossy (plug-suit) painting, though. It's a nice, realistic contrast, and the hair painting is quite suggestive and soft.

The body-type of this figure is quite intriguing.

Faithful to a moe philosophy, the sculptor presents us the body of an Asian pre-teen girl, with her big head, tiny torso and short legs.
The overall feel is that of a lightly "plump" yet tiny female figure, a rendition of the character that intrigued me.

Of course, the main feature of this figure are her MAJESTIC ball-joints, that in this picture you can savour in all their prominence:

Many people complain about this kind of "visible" joint, way too "attention-seeking" in their mechanicism, but to be honest, I think that they constitute the actual "charm" of the figure.
Exposed ball-joints, after all, were a trademark of Volks dolls back in the days, and what made them so popular between otakus--

The extreme posability and "softness" of this system, allows you a huge range of poses that always manage to get rendered naturally:

Unfortunately, the "assembling" vibe is still part of this figure, as her limbs and joints came off quite easily when trying to force her in certain poses. In my own figure, the joint on her right leg got quite loose in a very short time...

Long story short, here you have a niche product for the expert collector, that doesn't really satisfy them fully also if it leaves with a pleasant taste in the mouth...

I still consider this an interesting piece and a cute interpretation of the character fun to play with, but I recommend its purchase only if, as me, you happen to find her at a more than decent bargain.

Well, she has a random moe/shoujo visage, and the head is really big compared to the rest of the body XD --So yeah, there are MANY weird things about her face, but that's the style of this line of dolls.yuebing (4 years ago) #1571681The face is weird but in a good way, I don't know, maybe because her eyebrows look a bit uhm bigger than usual? I really like her **

Well, that's the style of this line of dolls... They all have the same face, befitting the recent standards of moe: huge eyes, fluffy hair and tiny nose and mouth.
about the durability, consider that practically her right leg came off as soon as I took her off her box x'DD It's easy to put back in place, but it's still quite loose...Moro (4 years ago) #1570658Her face is so odd, I think her features are placed too low on the face. How durable is she?

Her face is so odd, I think her features are placed too low on the face. Such a strange version of Rei, almost like a little kid's head on a more teenage body.
