Detolf alternatives

Good morning Viet… Wait that’s not right, Good morning MFC !!!

Like many of you I love to display my collection. As time has gone by thought I have found myself with not only a collection of Figurines but also a collection of Detolf stands. I still have 22 new figurines on pre-order and my Detolf are just packed.

I do not like dust like most people so alternatives recommended should keep that in mind. I have seen a few DIY tutorials that were very cool to look at and I Could potentially do as well. I can be very handy at doing things like that. Of course a ready made solution is always nice as well, leaves me time to do other projects.

So I call on you DIY folk and people that have great design idea’s to shoot some my way. Detolfs are cool and all but when you have 6 in a row on a wall already it get to be a little much. If people have pics of there display solutions would be great to see them as well.

I will post a new pic on the figurine wall when I get home. Re did the display again to make room.

A bit of blog necromancy here, but I'm planning on doing something no one here has brought up yet!

I've had an Expedit for a while and honestly have yet to use it to its full potential, but in a couple weeks I'm road tripping to the THIRD CLOSEST IKEA TO ME to pick up a few of these shelf inserts: (ext link) (They're out of stock anywhere closer to me, wah)

I think it's going to be a success judging from the way it looks - I'll probably post pictures once I get things set up!

A glass display is preferred as it allows viewing in any angle and show the highlights of a figure without changing its position. Even though we all place our Detolfs against the wall standing next to another Detolf, further limiting it's spectating option. I'd say we like the extra choice of it either way :P

Wooden shelve or bookshelf often has boards on all three sides which obscure the figure and limiting it to one direction for viewing. A lot of it has also to do with your collector's preference. Say I liked modern/glass style or cabin in the woods style, they both differ so greatly that we can only go for one without making a disaster room make over. Which is why the Detolf is the king of display and the common of all the poor.

suzy223 (9 months ago) #1600325I don't know about anyone else here, but I'm not very picky about display cabinets. I like detolfs and detolf-like display cabinets, but I'm also cool with mahogany/oak/wood display cabinets (example). I like antique furniture, and I feel it makes the figures look dignified. XD Almost everyone displays their figures in glass-only cabinets, which I think gets boring after a while.
Hey, if we can keep expensive porcelain figures and whatnot on display in nice mahogany cabinets, we can keep our expensive figures in them as well. They're both art. Some people may feel that keeping figures in antique/mahogany cabinets makes them look tacky. Alright, that's your opinion. But I personally think item #98665 would look fabulous in an antique display cabinet.
A lot of people on Kijiji/craigslist give away old antique displays for free/sell them for $50 or less as long as you're willing to pick the item up yourself. Since I don't have a car, I haven't been able to. D: I hope to acquire one soon. The mahogany display cabinet in my house holds all of my figures quite nicely (it's got glass panels in addition to glass frames), and item #78405 looks really cool in it. Plus they're built well (it's wood after all) so they won't topple over easily. Just my two cents.

I agree, displaying figures in wooden bookshelves somehow makes the whole thing looks more appealing and solid. Glass cases look too common and flimsy. Just my 2 cents.

Personally I think detolf is the best for displaying scaled figures since they allow for varying setups utilising risers etc. I was lucky to pick up 3 of these large frameless glass displays picture #530394 for $500 AUD on eBay (normally these are $500 just for one!) so keep an eye out for local classifieds or commercial clear outs :)

InoueRen (9 months ago) #1599614Are yours from the BILLY series? Thought I saw something like it in the catalogue. Yours would look even awesome if square sliding windows with wooden frame and glass pane can be attached to it.

No, it's from the Expedit series, not Billy.

Orannis (9 months ago) #1599599I really like my Expedit: picture #580494
You would probably need to attach glass doors if you wanted to avoid dusting though.
Or just don't dust, like me. XD
