chobittsu (2 months ago) #2632574Apparently it is the illustration on the cover of that latest C87 artbook; it can be seen at this YahooJapan auction: (ext link)

Thank you! It's a beautiful illustration, I even prefer it over Daisy and Annabelle's ones.

Hi!
Does someone know from which illustration comes this Dakimakura: (ext link) (Comiket 87)

I somehow get the feeling that Tony's inspiration for doujinshi art is drying up a bit; item #242063 contains several re-used illustrations and the latest book from Comiket (which I saw at Toranoana today) seems to be a collection of previous work. I couldn't confirm it, but on the back were several older doujinshi covers...

Rejean235 (3 months ago) #2503850Ho well, no Tony Calendar this year. It took me a long time to choose a replacement. I decided on To Love-Ru Darkness item #238432. Since it came out in Nov I already received it.
And that's exactly what I did as well. An advantage of that calendar is that it is a flip-over type, so unlike a Tony calendar it stays in one piece when you use it.

That's what I decided to go with too. You have excellent taste, good sir.

Maronn (3 months ago) #2493602Hmm interesting. I always had the feeling that Koto captures Tony's girls the best. Alphamax in comparison also does a good sculpting and paintjob but they don't look like Tony Taka figures to me. I always have the feeling that they can't really capture his style but Koto almost always did an excellent job doing so. But yeah, of course that's just personal opinion.^^I moved your post here as it's not really Annabel subject. kevinlowl wanted more on my views so here was my reply to him. It's a long post so you may not want to read it...

Rejean235 (4 months ago) #2484637Many companies made figures from Tony's art, most are linked in MFC. I generall buy one of each character. Here are two photos I took from past displays: (mfc link) and (ext link).

Figures from Giga Pulse are not linked (first photo second shelf on the right), Tony's art: (mfc link), item #19880 (which is surprizing coming from them), The other character in the art is on the 1st shelf. Uroyasu Kanchi is their best sculptor.

I've also got one of Griffon Enterprises, they are the only one who made a Shannon Milfy from Shining Ark. 2nd photo 4th from the left front row (mfc link) (mfc link). It's an excellent figure for Griffon, but it was sculpted by Anima who worked for Good Smile Company.

Clayz' (1st photo first shelf middle) (mfc link) item #129777. They did one in 2008 (artwork reprinted in 2014 calendar october) which was horrible item #4114 (I've got her but not on the photos). They are both by Uroyasu Kanchi, I guess he improved with time. His Neko Mimi Maids is his best work imho (1st photo 3rd shelf middle. (mfc link) item #18775 selling for ¥14095 in 2010 by Clays!

Toranoana did two figures. their best (1st photo 3rd shelf left) item #29810 was sculped by Miyagawa Takeshi and is
very close to the original drawing. Their second one (1st photo bottom left) item #1302 was done by someone who stopped sculpting shortly after, and I understand why.

Not on the photos, I've got the Xiao Mei by Yamato sculpted by G.O. (not Koto's or the one by Max Factory you mentioned which wasn't even planned when Yamato's came out) (mfc link) item #84647 which I prefer and goes well besides Alphamax's 2% sculpt item #161261.

Dragon Toy's sculptor Hagii Shunji pushed the likeness to the liquid of the artwork (1st photo right on the top shelf) (mfc link) item #183964. He's been around for a number of years, his first Tony was Max Factory's Kureha (see below).

Native (excellent manufacturer although they sometimes lack in their QA): (1st photo bottom shelf right; I display her cast-off): (mfc link) item #13819. Chieri has done a few of Tony's including the two Vocaloid for Max Factory. They are having horrible problems with item #144438 because they decided to use fabric and it stains the figure. They are trying to solved it and are failing. Native has never pushed for so long, they are pretty good at planning. I'm excited about item #198624, it's my favorite Tony's artwork. I took that photo as a break putting together my new display cabinets in my bedroom (bed cover) (mfc link). Since I display cast-off figures as such, I'll make an exception and buy two so I can have one dressed.

Alphamax (1st photo second shelf left) (mfc link), Tony's sad face hentai drawing, the one I used for her in my display. AGG is doing Tony's hentai sculpt for them, I think he does a great job and also makes the two expressions that Tony often draws in his art books.

I've got Max Factory Tony's Vocaloids (not shown in the two photos) but I remember when receiving Touka Kureha one of the top figure in 2007, which shows how figures have progressed since then. She's on the left (mfc link) besides other Shining series archers: Koto's Elwing and Altina Mel Syphis when I received Milfy.

And of course Alter which has the best quality for figures imho today, GSC can produre better color mix but sometimes has QA problems and of course for me, the final product depends a lot on the sculpt as well as the starting art. Shitoo Futatsu did their Mistral Nereis (2nd photo right back row, I have her in a much better place today) and their Houmei (not on my photos, I have her besides Nereis) (mfc link). Both of them are fantastic figures and a royal pain in the... to put together and have a tendency to fall apart every time I move them. I didn't like Melfy sitting on the cone, nor the one by Koto's so I have the Max Factory sculpted by Nanako who did their Tony's drawing showing Shining characters in swimsuit. He also did the Xiao Mei that you linked in your post.

Orchid Seed only did two figures from Tony. Seena Kanon (2nd photo on the left) (mfc link) item #6293 from 2009 by Arai Kyousuke, it's still one of my favorites. He also did their other one, Blanc Neige which came out in 2012. I don't have her since I bought the 2008 by Koto (3rd from thwe left on the second photo). I also have the Seena by Ice Cream (2nd photo 2nd row right) an horrible figure by an unknown artist that I got free (I already had my OS one so I would never have bought her).

Volks has made only one from Tony: Yukihime (second photo front row second from the right) (mfc link) item #94913. Misaki Serika has sculpted for them for about 15 years!

I won't cover Kotobukiya. They have the most in the Shining series of which I have a few as you can see on my second picture.

I don't know if you read all this long post, but to conclude, for me a figure has a company, a sculptor and in this case a drawing by Tony Taka. I expect Alter and Max Factory to produce better figures than Kotobukiya and Griffon Enterprises, but a good artist will help a lot in the final product. The sculptor always has the choice of staying close to Tony's work, which may not be the best option as it's 2D. Some of Kotobukiya's artist like to add a big smile to Tony's artwork. Migizou is most guilty of this, it was a big mistake (at least for me) on "Peace Keeper" Daisy item #153069 although it worked on item #61403 given the pose. Tony's drawing tend to have their subjects posing for a photo, so they are not very dynamic. Shitoo Futatsu from Alter will inspire his sculp by Tony's art but will not produce one of his drawing.
