As for differentiating fake from original. Usual qualities of fakes include:
a. Hair is muddy.
b. Face looks far from the looks of the authentic figure
c. Paint job has bleeds or over-glossy. The authentic has a somewhat soft rubbery feel on them.
d. Broken parts. The only authentic Play Arts figure known to have such factory defects is the infamous FFX Auron.
e. Some figures with keychain attachments may not include them.
f. Eyes are badly painted
g. Skin is less-fleshy and more plastic in look.
h. Tends to be smaller in size (FFVIII ones)

You need to be extra careful on buying those figures above. You need to find a really reputable seller if you cannot order via Square-Enix store.
I cannot order via Square-Enix store myself so I could not help anyhow with regards to ordering there.

I will be very careful, and I think I'm not gonna be the only one waitingo for the comparison images.

That E-bay auction is using deceptively authentic images of the Dissidia Trading Arts.
I posted a pic of the Fake Dissidia Trading arts here:
(ext link)
I think the most noticeable tell-tale sign of being a bootleg is Warrior of Light's horn being bent and the poor paint job on Zidane whose very crisply painted as an authentic.
For Hi-res pics (well, apparently) and detail shots of the authentics, please consult my reviews. :) (ext link)
As for the bootleg items themselves, they haven't reached our country so we are unable to make any complete reports about it. Sorry about that. Even the authentic Dissidia TA's are sold out in our country at the moment. :( Waaah...my Cloud! :(

I found that my Squall trading arts looked rather shabby but when I got him he included the box and plastic..

The Entire FFX Play Arts are very much defective to begin with due to the transparent pin joints used. However, Square-Enix did learned and never used such joints again. :)

how do I know that a Selphie Play arts is no bootleg?
I've ordered her and now I'm not sure if she's real.
The face and everything look ok, she has some paint bleeds (esp. on her right boot and one on her dress). In the pictures I've seen there are also
Her skin looks ok, just her upper body looks a bit darker than the rest. But it's not glossy or something.
Actually I wouldn't think that she's a bootleg
BUT, what makes me doubt that she's real is the box. It's taped with normal tape and not with round stickers.
I've read that bootlegs can be smaller in size. But well, I can't open the box when I don't know if I have to send it back~.
I hope someone can help me soon~!
Thank you. ^^

In the Selphie figure I got, the box is also taped with normal tape, not the circular ones. Maybe it's just the FFVIII Play Arts?
Though the upper body of the skin on my figure seems to be universally the same as the bottom - that my eye can distinguish anyway.
Hope this helps! I really can't imagine bootleggers counterfeiting Selphie - she isn't exactly the most popular FF character; their resources would probably be better spent elsewhere.
I think I'll open her box, she seems quite ok to me. I was just worried because of the tape.
But now there's another problem.
We also bought a new Auron figure because ours often fell from the shelf an his legs, his arms and the chain where his bottle was attached to broke.
The new Auron seems slightly different - his hair is different in the front, his skin looks a bit darker and somewhat diferrent. And - his box is most conspicious.
Take a look at these pictures:
picture #71944 picture #71945 picture #71946 picture #71947 picture #71948 picture #71949
Could you, or someone else, tell me if one of them is a bootleg?
I personally think the "old" Auron looks better, but his box does look more fake.
Thank you! ^_^""
Figure: search for SE's mark on sole of foot (some figures this mark comes in different places, likes Tiffa FFVII AC). The plastic in bootlegs figures is more translucent and eye's print is more bright. And figure is more weightless.
I wish to help... Sorry for my bad english :-(
I have Sora Normal, Roxas, and a bootlegged Sora Final Form (after I thought about it, I shouldn't have been surprised) Though I think my Sora Normal and Roxas ones are legit... 80% sure anyway.
I bought FFVIII Play arts Squall and Rinoa a while ago now from ebay (I did few checks beforehand to be confident) but have since struggled to conclude whether or not they are bootlegs.
I'm pretty good at spotting bootlegs by now. The box printing, material and paint quality of these look legit.
The only problem is that I don't like their eyes (since I couldn't really tell in the photos when I bought them, and still can't tell in photos from current sellers), and I've checked photos everywhere without much help in solving this matter. So maybe someone here can set me straight.
These two pics show what I mean:
Rinoa 1
Rinoa 2
Could it be a difference between Japanese and American releases? If so, which is which?
The eyes of the figures I have are similar to Rinoa 1, but it's in a Japanese box like the Rinoa 2 (taken from this review).
I want to buy a set of figures with eyes like Rinoa 2, but I don't want to risk getting the same figures again if they are all like this or risk getting the wrong release.
Which Rinoa figure do you guys have and which release was it?
Thanks a lot!

Hello! I have Rinoa Play Arts and she looks like Rinoa 2. In the first picture, I thought it strange her neckchain: the rings are big! Those of my Rinoa are very small, like neckchain of Squall. My figure is Japanese, come in original box in Japanese. I don't know if Rinoa had a American version; the Advent Children's line has versions in American printed boxes, but I believe the quality of the figures are the same...

Thank you very much about that observation on the neck chain! I didn't notice it before, but now that you have mentioned it, the neckchains on my Squall and Rinoa are very big indeed!
Recently, I bought the Selphie figure on sale to complete the set. Her eyes are the 'good' version, and her neckchain is small too. This makes me believe that the Squall and Rinoa I have may be counterfeit. Although comparing the printing quality of the boxes, there's no difference whatsoever!
