A club about dakimakura and cushions! XD With all the other club about other anime related items popping up, why not?

So, yeah, here's a club for those who like anime pillows of any sort, be them dakimakura, square cushions, stick cushions or even normal pillows with anime characters printed on them or the case.

How bad am I as a person to get a custom Marge/Homer daki?
Sorry for being alive and human.

Klarerwind (7 months ago) #1185350Are goose down pillows any good for dakis, or are they too squishy?

I think down pillows would be too heavy for a daki, but I don't really like down pillows at all, so YMMV I suppose. If you like a heavier, denser pillow, go for it. (can you get 50x150 down pillows?)

AurorionWing (9 months ago) #1066370Hi guys, probably a very newbie question but here it goes:

1. which online shops sell non-bootlegged dakis? (including for example licensed Taiwan ones)
2. which online sources are the best to keep track of the latest dakis (esp. "original artist" ones, e.g. Cospa, Chara-Ani, Surfer's Paradise?)
3. Looking for (ext link) but I heard xfancy ones are bootlegged. Looking for the licensed Taiwan ones (the Japanese ones are ridiculously overpriced I heard).

Thanks!

There's a post that a friend created that probably has most of this information. However, I don't have a link to it right now since the one I know is posted on a NSFW forum (I can't access it right now lol).

So from my experiences

1. I guess it depends what you mean by non-bootleg. You mention licensed ones, but it expands way more than just licensed ones. Most of the doujin ones are not licensed. They are, however, official meaning they are the original artists. But if you get deep down, I don't think they don't pay the rights to make a cover for that character. It is just that law doesn't really enforce it.

So typical places that sell mainly licensed and may have doujin ones would be the non-bootleg typical shops such as Hobby Search, Hobby Link Japan, or Amiami. Then you can expand to other stores such as Otacute and the like. Most shops that sell anime goods normally have some covers available.

If expanding to doujin ones, a great place is Mandarake. They have all types, but I mainly see covers from doujin circles much more often since there is a lot more of those types available.

Now if you want to get serious with doujin ones (most of those covers are more adult), then there are a lot more shops. You will normally need proxies to purchase them. However, there are some shops that will sell internationally. Most will be in Japanese or Chinese, so you'll need to translate the pages if you can't already read them. Not sure if you're interested in these, but the ones that ship internationally include NSFW shops just to name a few and give you an example of what I'm talking about.

2. There are a few Japanese and Chinese blog sites that is great for what you are asking. You'll have to once again translate the page (like google translate) to at least get an idea of what they are saying. But there are pictures. One especially is good that most hardcore collectors seem to use. NSFW

3. Yes Xfancy is bootleg. I'm not sure where you live, but just note, typical normal licensed covers will cost at least $100-130 USD without shipping. Then of course, many places you'll need to use a proxy, so you have to add additional bank service fees, domestic shipping, along with the proxy fee. You're looking at about $160+ easily for those. But if you keep up with it, you may find a good deal on an auction or something.

Now for a lot of discontinued covers, you're looking at a higher rate most of the time. I think that cover you want will be difficult to find for a good price. Even the Taiwan version. I think they (either Japanese or Taiwan) go for roughly 20-30k yen if I'm not mistaken. But your best bet would be to monitor YJA (Yahoo Japan Auctions), or similar auction sites unfortunately. If you hardcore monitor a place like Mandrake, you may possibly get a steal of a deal. But that cover hardly pops up on there.

Although what is your limit for that cover? For the Japan release, it is 10k yen retail. So it was roughly $140-150 after shipping. Pretty much double the amount for the one you linked. So unless you're super lucky, you'll need to pay more than that.

I do know of 3 possible people that have the Japanese one they may be willing to sell though.

If you have any other questions or want to know more (links, shops, etc), feel free to PM me or post.

edit: added links.

Here is the dakimakura guide my friend made. Again NSFW.

kilani (11 months ago) #987162Hey guys, I wanted some advice. What is the best way to hang your daki as a tapestry without damaging it? I really don't want to use thumbtacks or something like that.

I hang mine with wooden clothes pegs (3 of them) connected to the wall by bluetac. It's probably the least damaging way possible. If you're using quite small pegs, I guess you could just use more of them to support the weight.

If you use clothespins put some extra cloth between the pins and the daki so the pins don't leave marks on your daki.

Or if you want an easier and slightly less damaging way than using nails (and if you have drywall), I used push pins and clips (bought bulldog clips at Walmart). You can use any combination like that, but make sure the push pin can go through the wall all the way. You don't want to use thick clips where the pin can't cleanly hold the clip to the wall since the weight of the daki will pull it off. Then you can either put some paper or something between the clips for extra protection.

Nailed some 50cm cords to the wall and hang the dakimakura with clothespins to the cord... exept for one wall, the only option there was thumbtacks :/
