Grell Sutcliff is the Barnett family butler, who currently serves Angelina Durless (aka Madame Red). Meek and clumsy as a butler, his entire personality changes when his real identity is revealed - he is a death god (shinigami), who are in charge of bringing death to people after viewing their cinematic record, which is revealed after he touched someone with his Death Scythe (which is modified to look and function like a chainsaw).

Grell has an obsession with the colour red, and has some affectionate feelings towards Sebastian Michaelis, who rejects him with disgust. His personality is flamboyant and has no qualms in speaking his mind. He also often refers to himself with female connotations, reflecting his hope of one day bearing children.
