Saw her at AX last week and all I can say is, "Wow." If that's the actual size of the figure, 1/8 seems like an understatement.

I don't see why so many people are concerned with judging the project backers who were upset about the situation.

TOM has a store and could have sold the figure as just another pre-order. However, they made a "project" and asked people to back it. They listened to feedback and revised the figure. That's cool stuff and many backers are happy with their purchase and thank TOM for having done it.

However, it was advertised as a made to order exclusive. As soon as the backing period was over, it was suddenly not exclusive any more. I think that's reason enough for TOM to provide an explanation. Then there was speculation about why it wasn't really exclusive and questions about the authenticity of this figure sold through these other vendors. It should be quite clear now why TOM needed to explain. They have since explained it.

Now people want to know what happened and why people were upset and to tell them they shouldn't be upset and that they're apparent outrage is unjustified except for their own ignorance. I just don't get why the figure collecting community is so obsessed about that aspect of it. It was explained, so unless there are more questions that serve a good purpose, let's try to move on. Let's leave the Holo Wedding Dress figure full of comments about the figure and not about how stupid we find each other's comments to be.

I guess we should be annoyed with Myethos and/or the Chinese distributor(s) who probably shouldn't have been selling to US vendors ;P

it was labeled as made to order, it's now labeled pre-order, you can check the Internet archives for reference.
You can read the about page for the TOM project, it's kind of explicit.

There's also the answer from TOM staff in the comment at the bottom that further point to intended exclusivity

The February 19th update was like you said easy to make a lot believe it would only be available there,

Dunno, I guess you're right, though it would mostly depends on the definition of assumption you want to take.

Hadn't seen the overall TOM Project page, as I had been looking at the page for the project itself. The wording there is definitely such that I'd understand why people would assume exclusivity.

I still stand by my previous assertions that the people who are expressing outrage are being kind of obtuse... The explanation TOM has provided is entirely reasonable and valid. Being pissed at them because of the situation is pretty unreasonable. They had no reason to believe it'd be sold elsewhere. The fact that Ultra Tokyo Connection went to third party Chinese distributors to buy their stock, which they redistributed to US Vendors is beyond the realm of reasonable foresight... TOM didn't anticipate it, and frankly nobody would have reasonably anticipated it without the benefit of hindsight...

JessicaWe also would like to offer our apologies that we were not able to make a more public statement regarding this situation at an earlier time.
The truth was that TOM was not aware that this figure would be appearing through other retailers outside of China, and when we first received reports of this from users, we were not sure ourselves what type of information users were receiving from other retailers or where the figure was popping up to begin to formulate a response to address the situation. We had not wanted to careless or too haste with our reply if it would turn out that the situation was not how we understood it.

WeevilUnderwood (29 days ago) #22725548You feel "sorry"? You shouldn't there's many different kinds of collectors, there's nothing wrong with someone wanting a collection with rare items it makes the collection that much better. It's not much of a collection when anyone can buy the very same items with a simple google search.

It's not much of a collection if someone else can buy whatever too? That's probably the most ridiculous thing I've read today.

beatriceforlife (1 month ago) #22673593Umm... Just going through the comments section of that backing site, I put in "exclusi" into CTRL+F and I see quite a few matches, across several posts. So I'm not sure what part of the chasm between "what they said and what ended up happening" people were dissatisfied with, but I feel like the exclusivity was indeed a large portion of it...

Some random backer talking about exclusivity is very different from an actual statement from TOM. TOM never directly claimed exclusivity. People just made assumptions... Not saying that they were unreasonable assumptions, but they were assumptions nonetheless.
