jerokI'd say it's quite different... For starters the people you speak of tend to at least keep the gender of the character true to the person it's based on. xP

I think the "miniskirt George Washington" someone mentioned made a clear point. You really don't think it's even a liiitle bit awkward to have one of your favorite historic male heroes shown in female form?
The closest similarity I can find somewhere else are the female american Super Heroines that are based on the male Super Heroes. Like Super Girl, She-Hulk, etc. But those female characters have their own features, names, personality and background.

iNinja said it best.

iNinjaYeah but Saber is so popular and she's just the female version of King Arthur..
If they can take King Arthur and genderflip him to become one of the most popular female characters in the game/anime world, I don't see how a cute mini-skirted girl based on George Washington or whoever would be all that bad. I haven't heard of any Fate/Stay Night fans from the UK saying stuff like "OMG THEY DESECRATED KING ARTHUR!" If Japanese fans can have some harmless fun and enjoy this stuff, there's no reason why any non-Japanese people should get their panties in a bunch over it.

I personally don't care seeing historical American males in female form in comics because they're just characters and if the character is cute and likeable, who gives a damn? It worked for Saber, so chances are it could work for someone else.

shinhawkHow's that any different directors, video game makers, etc of any nationality creating fictional characters who are obviously based off real life people?

I was thinking after reading too much manga, anime etc...that japanese people have respected dead gracifully it's just bugging me.

Hmmm America should do that too. Miniskirt George Washington, anyone?

But on a serious note, yeah that's odd. I wouldn't want my legacy ruined like the that...
