I do tend to buy only characters I like, but it doesn't spoil my fun if I don't have a complete collection of everything based on a certain character! So if the item is shoddy or waaay too expensive, I just skip it. I've got some Kyouko and Mami figures so far, along with favorite characters from Ao no Exorcist, Fate/Stay Night + Zero, and Touhou Project.
Usually I don't mind if I don't have a full set. I don't have any Ao no Exorcist figures currently (but that'll change in December when MegaHouse's Rin is released ^^)
I agree with you in terms of bad quality figures. Some prize ones (and even some non-prize ones) are awful in terms of quality so I always skip those too and wait for something else.
So far I've never bought a character I don't know or like. I hope for things to stay that way (because whats the point in getting a figure of a character you don't like, the design would have to be spectacular or something...)
