Naruto Uzumaki Sage Mode: 1/10 X-tra Scale Figure by Tsume
After a long, rigorous 7-8 month wait since preorders, Tsume's 1/10 Sage Naruto X-tra has arrived! Note that this figure is my own personal Holy Grail as of today. (I've kept a very possessive eye on it ever since prototypes were revealed)

I pre-ordered him on January 30 2013, which I think was the afternoon that the preorders opened. I couldn't resist this piece. I paid a total of €64.90 (approx. $85.00 AUD at the time) for the single figure and UPS shipping. The order was made directly from the Tsume-Art website.

Introductions?Perhaps not?I don't think an overly large introduction is needed for this fella, since who doesn't know the name of the #1 Hyperactive, Knucklehead Ninja Naruto Uzumaki!

In the case that you're either no fan of the series or have lived in a cave for the past decade (I joke, dattebayo!):

❂❂WARNING:❂❂ MILD SPOILERS BELOW

Naruto Uzumaki (うずまきナルト, Uzumaki Naruto) is the title character and main protagonist of the series: Naruto. He is a genin-level shinobi from Konohagakure, and a member of Team Kakashi. A maternal descendant of the Uzumaki clan, Naruto is the jinchūriki of the Yang half of Kurama — the Nine-Tails. Despite once being ostracised by the majority of the village, he is now regarded as a hero, worthy of inheriting the position his own father once held.

Though it would've been nice to have a numbered serial plate like Tsume's HQS releases, the fact that this piece is limited kept me on the edge of my seat knowing I'd finally have a reasonably limited piece. Anyway, let's move on!

: Decently packed in a small box, but UPS' shipping was still pretty hefty for a figure that weighed around 500g.

OUTER PACKAGING 7/10
The outer packaging has both its ups and downs. At first though, the box didn't seem all too appealing. The colour scheme used is the same as Naruto's preorder flier which I thought to be a rather simple way of pasting one concept to another. I would've appreciated a window display as well - this packaging makes it akin to prize figures. However I'm pleased at how compact it is and has just enough room to fit all of Naruto's components.

❂ Front:
The front features a side-view dynamic angle of Sage Mode Naruto ready to let that Rasenshuriken loose! The ViZ Media (North American) Naruto Shippuuden logo is used and features additional logos such as Kyodai, Naruto 10th Anniversary and the Tsume-Art logo.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380259140.jpeg

❂ Top:
The top makes utilisation of a tear-off strip (I recommend not using it to open the box) and features the development team's personal signatures provided you have one of the 200 signed pieces. The black Tsume-Art logo contrasts well with the orange background, much like Naruto himself.
ImagesClose Spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380259782.jpeg

❂ Sides:
Both sides are identical and feature both Xtra 01 Sage Naruto and Xtra 02 Pain "Tendo". I think it's a bit of a tease image, telling you to BUY THE OTHER ONE TOO to complete the set... and well... maybe one day?
ImagesClose Spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380259142.jpeg

❂ Back:
Nothing all that special from the back view. Has the figure's barcode as well as an age warning. I can't read French so I'll stick it into a translator at some other point in time.

❂ Bottom:
Blank white. I recommend opening the figure from this end, however it takes some tearing (that is some REALLY STRONG GLUE).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380260516.jpeg

INNER PACKAGING 7/10
The inner packaging isn't all that great either. The figure is packed in individual components in a plastic bag (the Rasenshuriken utilises a bag within a bag). Also, with no blister tray present, the pointy bits of the figure (e.g. Naruto's hair) can puncture the box. Some extra cardboard was also placed inside, though not quite as functional as I'd hoped.

❂ Upon Opening Box:
Why hello there Naruto! I can already see that mine has a disappointing factory error on his headband. Though I believe that part was hand-drawn/painted so I guess it's somewhat excusable.
ImagesClose Spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380259786.jpeg

❂ Layout:
The plastic bag is separated into compartments for each individual piece of the figure. Thankfully functional as a way to prevent paint-transfer.
ImagesClose Spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380259788.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380259874.jpeg

SCULPT 9/10
I love the sculpt! When the prototype was released, I believed this figure had the most accurate face sculpt of Naruto that had ever currently existed. I wasn't disappointed at all and got exactly what I paid for in terms of sculpt.

❂ Rasenshuriken:
The shape of the Rasenshuriken is true to the anime and manga. Though it would've been nice to have a few ridges or outward-pointing waves near the edges, I think it's still great and outstanding the way it is.
ImagesClose Spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380259880.jpeg

❂ Face and Head Sculpt:
Perfection. In comparison to my other Naruto figures, this face outdoes the rest. The gritted teeth, the determined eyes, the creases on his brow. Simply amazing. His hair had a few factory-errors but I can excuse them. The hair sways - imitating the notion of him running through the barren land to launch the attack on Pain!
ImagesClose Spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380259972.jpeg

❂ General Figure:
The whole sculpt is outstanding visually. But functionally, the way the pieces fit together I didn't quite like. The head is loosely attached and can be removed with too much ease. The connection between the torso and the legs are unnecessarily painted orange and is tight to fit. The scroll is not fixed to anything, which causes problems for physically angled photoshoots. The Rasenshuriken is rather unstable on his hand with the hand-peg having a strange angle. This causes the Rasenshuriken to make direct contact with the cloak and risks paint transfer. However, I still love the moving-feel of the whole figure when not having to worry about parts becoming detached.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380259968.jpeg

PAINTING 8.5/10
The paint applications are very much in Tsume's unique style - imitating cell shaded graphics and solid colours. Tsume have always had a "chalky" feel to their figures in their HQS, HQF and X-tra lines.

❂ Rasenshuriken:
Beautiful gradient. Portrays just enough dynamicism for a depiction of movement.
ImagesClose Spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380259882.jpeg

❂ Skin:
This is where he loses a bit of love. The skin is not painted. The colour of the PVC itself is the skin tone portrayed. As such, some people have commented him to have a prize-figure-like feel due to the lack of skin paint, though I still tend to disagree with that exaggerated statement. The prototype however, seemed to have painted skin judging by the chalky texture in promotional images.
ImagesClose Spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380259974.jpeg

❂ Face and Head:
Decals for the facial features such as eyes and eyebrows. His scar-whiskers are a little thicker than I expected and aren't as smoothly lined. An odd thing I noticed was that the decals had been applied with a bit of excess. A transparent film near the eyes has "leaked" onto the surrounding area of skin, though not very noticeable (though very noticeable in flash photography and high areas of light: ImagesClose Spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380277608.jpeg
). The most notable thing I noticed was the factory error on his headband - a scribbly Konoha insignia. I was disappointed by the look of the insignia and will sadly deter the future photos I intend to take.
ImagesClose Spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380259972.jpeg

❂ Cloak:
Perfect shade of crimson red. Not as glossy as portrayed in prototypes which is good. The black flames on the edge of the cloak have no paint leaking beyond the lines (or at least mine was fine). The scroll was painted well in conjunction. Underneath the cloak is a gradient of red and black which adds a nice touch in contrast of colour.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380259989.jpeg

❂ His trademark orange-ness!
Who's Naruto Uzumaki without orange? The chalky texture of the paint is more evident on his orange clothing than it is anywhere else on the figure. The orange paint greatly reflects on Tsume's style of painting. In the areas of the jacket and pants, this was executed very nicely. Additionally, his zipper was also quite detailed in both paint and sculpt.
ImagesClose Spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/MobiusX1380259948.jpeg

POSING 11/10 See what I did there?
The pose is more than I could have ever asked for. It is absolutely breathtaking and is currently the most dynamically posed figure in my entire collection. Despite being a static figure, I can assure myself that I will be staring at it endlessly with the Will of Fire burning inside me with awe.

❂ Absolutely dynamic!
What can I say? It's just the best. 360 view in the images below.

BASE 10/10
Tsume-ArtAll our X-tra by Tsume figures have a sober and classy black base. Naruto's posing is an invitation to display him facing Pain.
Indeed, it is very classy and I love it for its solid, circular design.

❂ Simplicity is good, ya?
The texture is different to that of the boring black bases of prize figures. This base has CLASS. The inner-carved bevel in the circle makes for an even more impressive display. It does its job very well.

COMPANY SERVICE 6/10
Sorry Tsume, this is where I can't be all too generous with a score. As highlighted at the beginning of this article, this figure took 241 days from the opening of preorders until now to finally arrive. Numerous delays were announced and explicit reasoning wasn't handed out unless we searched specific minutes of YouTube videos ourselves. However they were nice to notify us somewhat vaguely through email.

In regard to shipping, UPS had a delay of their own (5 extra days), though this is not included with my assessed score.

Nonetheless, I'm still willing to purchase another X-tra from the Tsume-Art website in order to display it alongside Naruto.

ENJOYMENT 9.5/10
❂ No other Naruto figure like it!
Well, he IS my grail after all! (unless some figure company comes out with a Kiba Inuzuka figure then I'm sold!)
I imagine that owners of both Naruto and Pain will enjoy re-enacting the Pain Invasion Arc scene of absolute badassery. I intend to take Naruto with me on numerous photoshoots in the future to truly pay gratitude for Tsume's sculpt and posing.

If only there wasn't that really annoying Konoha insignia error, this'd be a 10/10!

Size Comparison with other Naruto Figures
Some customers weren't pleased with the size, despite being clearly labelled as 1/10. Honestly I was expecting something smaller, so when I opened him up he was pretty damn huge. After all, most of the current Naruto figures in the market are practically 1/10 or smaller. He'd look awkwardly small if not displayed with his own series' figures though.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
MY MONEY WENT TO A BETTER WELL-DESERVED PLACE. Thank you so much Tsume-Art! What more can I say? Or maybe I'm just too happy to even consider words now. I am one happy owner of this amazing figure.

*note that the scores on the side have been rounded up (or down in the case of 11/10 Posing).

Now, I can't possibly leave Naruto to be displayed on his own. I have also ordered Taka ver. Sasuke 1/10 X-tra from the Tsume-Art website as well and am eagerly waiting for him... patiently enough. I've also contacted a local store and they've told me they will eventually stock Sage Naruto and Pain. I intend to get Pain one day, but I am in no rush, though it saddens me that it may not have the signatures on it.

Til' next time!

pogie143 (5 years ago) #1759166Nice review man! First review I ever read here I think. I particularly like the naruto line of comparisons too. When I first saw the box, I thought he was going to be really small lol until I took him out that is. The rasenshuriken gives him some height too.
On another note, in regards to the posing of the rasenshuriken, you can position it on naruto's hand so that it is perfectly straight just like the item pic. I like it that way for some reason (^.^)

Thanks, there's a bunch of great reviews out there for you to read :) I intend to write more than just this one too, so I'll get ready for the next one... in... probably 2-3 weeks.

Regarding the rasenshuriken, my Naruto's cloak is quite... elevated. Not sure if it's an inconsistency with the others (mine has some quite noticeable differences from the remainder of the pieces sold) and the rasenshuriken touches the cloak. I have to angle mine this way, but I prefer the angle :)

But then again, inconsistency isn't always bad. I'm actually glad they were inconsistent with my Naruto's eyes. They're closer together on mine than they are on others, making him look much more serious :D Side-view photos are especially more effective thanks to this :) None of the figures ended up being perfect, but I guess that counts for each of us having a relatively unique piece :D

Wario54 (5 years ago) #1755636Congrats on the limited figure! I actually got one of my grails from Tsume, too: Gajeel, my favorite character from my favorite shounen Fairy Tail. The price was pretty reasonable besides the shipping...Shipping from Europe is expensive. Had to pay $30 extra just to get it here. ._.'
Figure talk aside, this review is pretty great and I'm wondering why you haven't done more. I especially love the size comparisons, I always find those useful. I will admit that I'm super jelly of your organization skills. Anyway, hope you do another one of these. One for Sasuke, maybe? :3

I intend to write reviews hopefully for GEM Kakashi and then Xtra Sasuke. Thank you for your feedback!

DonkeyBlonkey (5 years ago) #1755167Personally I wouldn't say I'm a fan of that figure but the review you made was well made, well organized, and well executed.
Good job done.

I'm glad I could appeal to non-fans as well! Thank you!

CIN (5 years ago) #1755105Nice read!. Really liked the comparison shots with other figures. Tsume's Naruto is kinda disappointing for me, especially his skin. It looks so red and cheap! There's this prize figure feel all over him, his inner packaging only adds to it. I do like the sculpt as well but the promo pics did look better. An easy pass for me unless I find him somewhere for 20-30$ tops.

When I put him side by side with prize figures, theres a huge noticeable difference in quality. The skin may not be painted but the colour of the PVC looks correct to me. $30 dollars eh? If I found him at that price I'd start an army! Aha.
