Dead or Alive - Hitomi - HGIF Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach VolleybDead or Alive - Hitomi - HGIF Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyb

MaakieMaakie5 years agoReview
! This is a review from a swimsuit figure, this can be considered NSFW !

Welcome to my review of ITEM #11752 ! Today I will be talking about a figure of Hitomi ENCYCLOPEDIA #3503 from the game-series Dead or Alive ENCYCLOPEDIA #433 ! This figure is made by Bandai ENCYCLOPEDIA #7624 and shows Hitomi in a bikini, which she wears in Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball ENCYCLOPEDIA #432 .

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

The Dead or Alive (DOA) games are 3D-fighters that are mainly known for their speed and very big environments to fight in. Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball (DOAX) is a spin-off of this series and is about all the female members from the fighting game, going to Zack Island. They think there will be an fighting tournament, but when they reach the island it turns out they have been tricked. The game works in time slots for each day, and you can go on "holiday" with each of the (female) cast members from Dead or Alive. The gameplay consists of playing volleyball as a main goal, gives you the option to socialize with other Dead or Alive fighters and has a lot of small mini-games to earn extra money. Money can be spend on items for your character or presents for other characters. Also a very important part in the game is to become friends with another girl on the island, so you can become good volleyball-partners. DOAX is mainly known for it's fanservice, but I have to admit I enjoyed the gameplay also a lot, the volleyball system works very well. It did become very repetitive after a while, though. It's a fun game, but I only recommend to play it as short sessions. Luckily the game system (with the time slots in the day) is very good for this!

This figure is from Hitomi, she is a half-Japanese, half-German girl who is a karate expert. Her first appereance was in Dead or Alive 3. Shortly after her introduction, she became quite a favorite with the players of the game for being a more modest and optimistic girl compared to the other female DOA cast members. Personally, I really enjoy her fighting style and think it's one of the easier characters to play with in the game.

The reason why and how I got her

In the past, I have bought a few figures from this set as a gift for a friend (I ended up receiving ITEM #11745 and ITEM #11747 for her). When I received them, I was quite impressed with their quality for the price they go for and wanted to buy a few for myself too! Unfortunately for me, they were sold out at that specific shop. A few years later I had the opportunity to buy them again, when a local shop acquired quite a big batch of these in unopened state. I bought one at random and received this Hitomi. I would have liked to have bought more, but he was asking quite a high price for them, so I kept it to one.

Original art

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uExEfcik2uw/UwZuaNBEXdI/AAAAAAAAF0U/vxgSZIPLuZU/s912/Moe_Hitomi_Bikini.jpg

The exact posing of this figure was recreated from the pre-rendered shot from Hitomi which we see on the box-art of "Dead or Alive Xtreme" for the original Xbox. I couldn't find an in-game shot of the exact bikini she wears, but I know for sure it's one she can wear in the game (the game has 300+ swimsuits which can by worn by each character making a lot of possibilities).

Small notes before starting the review

Keep in mind before starting to read this review that this figure is a gashapon originally retailing for only 200 yen and scoring is keeping this in mind! Also, my camera is not made for macro-shots, so the picture quality is a bit lower than you are used from me.

The Box

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-xm9E046KBI0/UwUTJQA3H7I/AAAAAAAAFxY/4rPbMCKKGA8/s720/IMG_9193.JPG

Hitomi comes in the "standard" gashapon packaging, which exist of a randomly selected color gashapon-ball where the figure is inside. View spoilerHide spoilerI own quite a lot of gashapon and the gashapon ball colors I have seen most were blue, yellow and red. Those seem to be the most common colors to get your gashapon figures in.

First Look

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-KCldggnmKnk/UwUTPpPFFNI/AAAAAAAAFx0/6Do6mutLFII/s912/IMG_9194.JPG

Once opened, the gashapon ball contains a bag of parts and a small booklet. The booklet shows the pictures and names of all the different figures in the set. search.php?vers...

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-nYwLuia41bA/UwUTLL_KozI/AAAAAAAAFxg/qXDXXGGfIoA/s912/IMG_9195.JPG

The parts are all in one big bag...

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-izWY8ctxmxU/UwUTQcNLwJI/AAAAAAAAFyE/-NTn7VI05t4/s912/IMG_9196.JPG

...and when opened the legs, base and flower are also in their own protective plastic. I'm not completely sure why they did this, since all the parts are already sealed seperately from each other to make sure no paint transfers occur.

I want to mention before starting to review the full figure, that I decided to glue the small flower into her hair (every figure of this set comes with a small, loose flower). I wanted to put it on her base, but I was afraid of losing it...and in the DOAX games there is the possibility to buy flowers for your girls, which can be put in their hair, so I thought it was fitting!

The Figure

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-JOO2SW60D3g/UwUTS7chLVI/AAAAAAAAFyU/0tzB0bGP0p4/s720/IMG_9201.JPG

The first thing I noticed was the high amount of detail in her hair! After that, I noticed she is already quite a leaner, although just set up from her packaging. Not much of this is to be seen when looking at her from the front. A nice detail I didn't expect is the small bear on her behind. Hitomi has quite a shiny skin, which was to be expected, but still a bit of a downside.

Looking at all the details!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Q7wCREbVMSw/UwUTOgx9_VI/AAAAAAAAFxo/oLFLCY5kJrs/s912/IMG_9197.JPG

One of the really big eye-catchers is the extensive base this small figure comes with. The top shows the logo and name of the game, the bottom shows disclaimers. It's maybe not very visible on the picture, but the base looks very smooth and is great compared to a lot of other gashapon bases, who mostly are small stands that just keep the feet apart: View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-BW5OhdTNtMI/UwZ8P5ngqPI/AAAAAAAAF0w/A6XTg4EwSCw/s192/stand2.jpg Or even worse, only give support to one foot and just expect the figure to be stable that way: View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2jOHEnlPggo/UwZ8P3PlMXI/AAAAAAAAF0s/zbpFyGcesGw/s406/stand1.jpg

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-p_KD65cL30M/UwUTVCMXh8I/AAAAAAAAFys/YmnxjZzI_C0/s720/IMG_9203.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-khSBixghYCo/UwUTWCiBDYI/AAAAAAAAFyw/WH7vAfulk7E/s720/IMG_9204.JPG

Hitomi's hair is definitely also very good sculpted. It has a lot of detail coming in seperately sculpted strands. The paint on it is a very metallic finish brown. You would expect a color like this to look cheap on a figure, but I think that because of the sculpting it all turns out very well.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-HtZkDtIW0WA/UwUTXMxnU6I/AAAAAAAAFzA/uUQXD_huDSE/s720/IMG_9205.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ur1wFyKsl-Y/UwUTUuRT7EI/AAAAAAAAFyk/hL7t7pBwaC8/s912/IMG_9202.JPG

Hitomi's face...it confuses me a bit. The roughness in her eyes and eyebrows make it look like they were handpainted, but that seems to me very unlikely for gashapon figures. On the other hand, her eyes also don't look like decals. Overall the painting detailing in her face is quite nice for her size. What's more interesting are the sculpting details she has. Hitomi's nose and lips are very nicely sculpted, but what impresses me the most are her collarbones and neck.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/--7-p77VNYEw/UwUTXfY953I/AAAAAAAAFzE/KgpYecYZ6rA/s720/IMG_9206.JPG

Hitomi has a very nice stomache, which is also to be seen on this small trading figure, she looks quite a bit thinner here than she looks in the game though!

Hitomi's bikini top has a small pink detail, from a distance this looks like an unpainted part, but from up close you can see it's a different shade of pink that runs over the bikini top. Something that is also very noticeable here is the sculpting of her breasts, they made it so that you see two individual breasts (and a little bit of her nipple) through the fabric. A very intricate detail.

Her bikini bottom has a small, laced up part. It looks very rough and I actually had to look at it for quite a while before seeing what it actually is. The painting was done quite neatly looking at the size of this figure, it's mainly the small sculpt that makes this part a bit vague. As you can also notice in this picture, there is a big hole between her right leg and the bikini bottom. Unfortunately this is a part that was already glued in the factory and I can't put it further in, unless I would break it off and replace and -glue it.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wPfN4vCVBNs/UwUTXggXJlI/AAAAAAAAFzI/vgezaaQnSwg/s720/IMG_9207.JPG

Her back shows some more detailing and her behind was also shaped very well. Her bikini bottom shows a teddy bear which I personally think is very cute and fitting for Hitomi.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-tUOIvl2bFZY/UwUTZJhCIoI/AAAAAAAAFzY/Z2ilGnKLLLI/s720/IMG_9209.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-EM7g5xJzwvg/UwUTZWkmfrI/AAAAAAAAFzc/HEFsJmICvew/s720/IMG_9208.JPG

Hitomi is holding a volleyball with the DOAX-logo. The details are done quite well, since you can see the texture of the ball. The way Hitomi holds the ball is a bit awkward, it makes the hand look too small. The silver bracelet is painted okay, but has no detailing.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-imkvK60QjXw/UwUTZ-y7EOI/AAAAAAAAFzg/Y_GYDdV4X7c/s720/IMG_9210.JPG

Hitomi has very nicely sculpted fingers. I was quite impressed with this part, since with small (and sometimes also with bigger figures) the fingers look "glued" together, which is here not the case.

As you can see here on her arm and also on some other small parts on this figure, there are some rough points in the skin of this figure. I think they are leftovers scraped off from the mold this figure was made in.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-XvtpmA7lduw/UwUTeg-oqfI/AAAAAAAAFz4/NdLdsZ3eBBE/s912/IMG_9213.JPG

Her toes have been sculpted the same as the hands. Also very nicely done.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-39s-20gcO0I/UwUTdogHyEI/AAAAAAAAFzs/_tJCP7ut-1k/s912/IMG_9214.JPG

Even small details like her ankles have been sculpted. The pegs on her feet don't go completely into the base, but it gives enough sturdiness to the figure and is not very noticeable.

Summary or tl;dr

Positive
- Very high level in detail of the sculpt (hair, collarbones, stomache).
- Very intricate design on the base.

Neutral
- Painting is not very even on all parts, but overall very acceptable.
- Shiny skin (but was to be expected)

Negative
- Quite a big hole inbetween her right leg and her bikini bottom. This was a part glued in the factory and can be different on each copy of this figure.
- Already a bit of a leaner just out of the box.

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
Very high detail in sculpt. I was impressed looking at her release price!

Painting 7/10
Not very neatly painted at all parts, but overall very acceptable.

Posing 7/10
Very simple, gives a good look at her body.

Base 8/10
Very nicely detailed and unexpected from a gashapon figure! Only downside is that the pegs of her feet don't completely fit into the base.

Packaging -/10
No rating, since it's the standard gashapon packaging (ball + small booklet), so there is not much special to mention and it's hard for me to come up with a fair score.

Enjoyment 8/10
Very good quality gashapon figure and a nice addition for my collection!

Conclusion
As a DOA fan I own, have owned and have seen a lot of different trading figures from this game-series. By far, the best set is the one this figure in the review is from, the HGIF Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball Capsule Toy Vol. 1 set search.php?vers... If you are a DOA fan liking small figures I highly recommend buying from this set. If you like small figures and gashapon in general I would also recommend to buy at least one from this set, and be amazed by their quality for their size and price!

Availability
I have seen (partial) sets and loose figures from this set a lot of times on Yahoo Auctions. Most biddings for them end up quite low, but keep in mind the proxy fees and shipping fees that apply, they could make the total amount quite high (unless you combine with other items). A quick search also brought me to European webshop Archonia, where you can buy a randomised unopened one for 2,50 euros each: www.archonia.co... If you as an European buy there, there is a fixed shipping cost of 5 euros, no matter the size and weight of the package. It is a lot more expensive to ship from there to outside of Europe, so as a non-European maybe you would be better off with a proxy service.

And to finish it!

Here is how she stands in my current collection! Together with Ayane in one of my favorite outfits from the game!

Kuuga (5 years ago) #2027462I hope someday Bandai or GSC make her 1/12 figures (SHF or Figma)

That would be nice! :D

But actually I haven't seen any new DOA figures in quite some years. :/ Even when DOA5 came out no new figures (quite a lot of new merchandise though)!

victorviper (5 years ago) #2013854Did you ever play Dead or Alive Paradise for the PSP? It's basically a cross between DOAX and DOAX2, with some elements of both games. In addition, it's a little more forgiving than the other DOAX games in certain respects. For instance, in DOAX it was so tedious to get certain characters to accept some of the swimsuits (like the Venus), but in Paradise the characters seem much less inclined to throw gifts away so it's a lot easier to get a complete "wardrobe" for your preferred characters. The tradeoff is that the graphics aren't nearly as good as the other DOAX games.
Sadly, it seems like there's not too much interest in Dead or Alive here on MFC...

Nope, not yet! Dead or Alive Paradise is still on my wishlist to buy for my PSP! I don't see the game much for sale locally and when I do, it's for quite an high amount. >.< So I'm still on the lookout for an affordable copy! Your description sounds good, so I'm still interested in it! I have seen some clips from the gameplay in the past and I didn't expect really good graphics, haha! I mean, the PSP is great with what it can do, but even the first DOAX has an really high amount of details, so I wouldn't expect it to look as good as that! :P

I noticed the same! Also at your review, but also when it comes to discussion of DOA(X) and it's figures on database pages and in clubs. So far I only found you and one other person on here that really like DOA(X).

VioFitz (5 years ago) #2017046Wow! I really admired that hair sculpt! It's far better than most of my figmas... The hair sculpt is pretty close to my Play Arts Kai collections.

Yeah, her hair is great! :D Really love it myself too! Such high details for something so small! ^w^

Maakie (5 years ago) #2013804I think the same! People just see it as a fanservice-game and already disapprove of it because of that, but the game has quite a lot to offer! The relationship part is very fun too, but I thought it was very hard!

victorviper (5 years ago) #2012839I always thought DOAX got bashed unfairly. It's really quite fun, especially the relationship aspect of the game, and it had a good soundtrack to boot. Being able to have Ayane and Kasumi team up, be friends, and hang out together is pretty hilarious, IMO.
Anyway, I considered getting this set of trading figures a long time ago, but ultimately I never did. The details look good enough for cheap prize figures though.
Thanks for the shout-out as well :)

The relationship part is very fun too, but I thought it was very hard! The soundtrack wasn't my personal taste, but what I liked a lot is the possibility with the xbox and the game to rip music directly from a CD to the xbox and then put it in the track list of DOAX. :)

I still really recommend these small figures if you find them for a good price! :D Since you are a DOA(X) fan, you won't regret it! ;)

And no problem, I thought it was fun to do since you reviewed a very likewise figure! :3
