Komaeda Nagito School Physical Examination (Algernon)

aeonblue3 years agoReview
Format inspired by BEANI and WAYFINDER and their 2P reviews. Thanks you guys!

WARNING: Spoilers ahead! I’ve put the most spoilerific parts in spoiler tags but basically, if you haven’t played SDR2 yet and would like to go into it blind (which is an excellent choice) then I suggest skipping this until you finish the game. I am not responsible for any damage, shocks, deaths, tears or despair from being spoiled.

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p522/jforjenius/DSC00942.jpgBut I am! Upupupupu~

Why hello dear viewers! I’m Monokuma! Here at Hope’s Peak Academy we seek to support and maintain not only the talents of our students but also their health and wellbeing. Deaths are only permitted through mutual killing! Upupupu. So we’d like to take our precious students temporarily away from their field trip of mutual killing to make sure they’re in tip top shape! We’re also broadcasting this all to you to show exactly that. Even while they’re on their school field trip. Aren’t I such a caring bear? That’s what headmasters are for after all!

Now then, up first is none other than our Super High School Level Lucky student (or Ultimate Lucky Student) Komaeda Nagito! Come out you bastard! Gyahahaa!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420041.jpeg
Eh? What’s this?
Unfortunately Komaeda couldn’t join us today so instead we have his 1/8 scale figure from Algernon ITEM #167001.

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p522/jforjenius/DSC00950.jpg

What!? Where is he!?

I’m not too sure myself. Tsumiki says he’s caught some type of fever and she’s nursing him though apparently Komaeda himself says he’s never felt better in his life.

Nursing? Never felt better in his life?? Kyaaa! Have the students forgotten the rules about indecency? Have they become lost, perverted sheep without the lead and guidance of their shepherd of a headmaster? I need to teach them a lesson with my bear hands!
Y…Yeah… Anyway, what shall we do with this figure?

Well we’re still on air…so just review it or something.
What a shocking turn of events!

Komaeda Nagito School Physical Examination 1/8 Scale Figure Review (Brought to you by Algernon)

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p522/jforjenius/DSC00941.jpg

Why hello dear viewers! I’m Monokuma!

And I’m aeon. A SHSL Procrastinator who was not good enough to make it into Hope’s Peak so I’m working as Monokuma’s lackey and filling the void by collecting figures of the students and headmasters on the side.

What kind of talent is procrastinating? Absurd! Though if you really do have the will and desire to become a SHSL student then there’s a certain ex—and without further ado, the figure! Let’s start with the box.

Box

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394421271.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394421277.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394421273.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394421275.jpeg

It's a nice box. Follows the design of the first figure in the series, Junko's, box except for the front. I like it better than Junko’s though not just for the new and slightly more appealing design but also that it’s non-corrugated so it doesn’t leave those corrugated marks like they do on Junko’s box. The box was bigger than I expected and I should be right to be so because the blister is unnecessarily big at the back to make the box a square shape from above. An almost fluent English description was even kept. I don’t mind some cute broken English but fluency is good too.

Just like on Junko’s box I found it interesting that they translated the SHSL title to exactly that: Super High School Level. Chou Koukoukyuu isn’t exactly an English friendly phrase and as far as I know, SHSL was orenronen’s (SA Forum LPer of the games) translation. Coincidence or influence?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420853.jpeg
He comes with alternative parts! A crazy face and an extended right arm. There’s also an instruction sheet included. Now you have no excuse to be bored of your Komaeda!

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p522/jforjenius/DSC00943.jpg

Hold on! Aren’t you forgetting a very important piece!?

…Okay, he comes with one extra part. It’s a spoiler so it was carefully hidden in the blister near the base. We will get to that, don’t worry you awful bear.

What was that?
We’ll get to it you wonderful bear.

Sculpt

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420043.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420045.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420047.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420049.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420051.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420053.jpeg

He is 23cm tall and his actual height is 180cm so if we do the math then he’s off by 0.5cm which is a pretty faithful scaled replication anyway. This is what seems to be Algernon’s 3rd scale figure release and looking at the other works in the db by the sculptor, Shichibee (七兵衛), it seems their forte lies in chibi figures from Nendoroids to other trading figures and Komaeda here is among their only or even first commercial scale figure. So there’s a lot of risk involved already. However the sculpt itself is pretty good, just not amazing. Overall details are good down to the wrinkles in his clothes, chain and skull accessory, crazy hair (which would’ve been perfect if they managed to procure thinner tips) and the slight smile he always wears. Though it’s sometimes really hard to see his mouth at all so the sculpting may have been a little too light there. The movement in the figure suggests that there’s wind blowing diagonally across him and hitting the left half of his body. I can barely notice this though so it’s not exactly an exciting display of wind and movement in a figure.

The only ‘issue’ I had with this figure was with the chain part. Since it’s flexible, it kind of drooped thanks to the lovely blast of Australian summer. I managed to fix it but using (invisible) tape to hold it under his coat (no sticky residue was left) until summer was over but who knows when it’ll wilt again. You can’t trust Australian weather. Also yes, the chain is meant to end like that and not loop back into his pocket. My only gripes about the sculpt itself are actually in the alternative parts. So let’s have a look.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420855.jpeg
Firstly, the default arm is a pain to remove. As you can see they’re fitted in a way that the part goes straight into the hole and it’s tight.

How tight?
Really tight.

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p522/jforjenius/DSC00942.jpg

Upupupupu…

What..? Anyway, since it’s so tight you have to wriggle it out and I was gentle at first but after going at it for long enough I started to get rough and that’s when it happened.

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p522/jforjenius/DSC00941.jpg

It came out! It came all out…gobs of thick, white stuffing!

What he means kids, is that I ended up leaving a light scratch mark on his coat. You know, the scratch on matte surface kind. This could have been avoided if they made the parts fit in diagonally like Alter’s Izaya. Though Alter’s Shizuo was a straight peg too and it had no problem. But there’s a first for everything right, headmaster?

The lesson is to be gentle, especially if it’s your first time.
Take it heart kids. From my own experience you might need to apply a bit more force towards the end for it to come out but be really careful!

Upupupu.
We’re still talking about the figure…right?

Default head + extended right arm:
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/aeonblue1394420859.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/aeonblue1394420861.jpeg

So this pose was likely based off this image/sprite:

http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130703064016/danganronpa/images/b/b7/Komaeda_%2816%29.png
To me, the pose looks a tiny bit odd coupled with his default face because it gives me a little mix between being amidst an explanation and just shrugging. I definitely think it was made with the other head in mind. Before we get to that though, the problem!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420949.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420851.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420947.jpeg

Do you see it? While the front fits okay despite the obvious difference between his left and right shoulder as seen in the middle image, there’s a rather big gap left from the back. Good thing it’s out of display sight but it’s still a flaw nonetheless.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394421073.jpeg
The seams of his hair are hidden quite well though his style of thick locks of slightly wavy hair does help since you can’t see it from the front view.

As mentioned before I think this pose was mainly intended for the alternative head, otherwise known as the crazy face.

Alternative head + extended right arm:
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420959.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420961.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420963.jpeg
Hello ladies.

It’s based on two different pieces. The pose is based off the sprite from before and even though they have a crazed version of that too I think the face itself is based on this CG: View spoilerHide spoilerhttp://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130710131704/danganronpa/images/5/5a/Event_50_%281%29.png

As much as I love crazy boys, this face failed to sweep me off my feet with its beautiful insanity. It does look crazy but it leans more towards the demonic/possessed portion of the pie and freaks me out at certain angles. I think this could’ve been improved with some more work on the mouth and some shading on his forehead just like in the CG. Overall though I’m glad that they included this as an option.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420957.jpeg
I found the way they designed to switch the heads a bit interesting since I’ve only ever seen heads switchable by the neck rather than to the shirt line/collarbone. To swap the heads you’ll need to remove the whole head piece (which is super easy and so much better than his right arm) and remove the front piece of hair like a Nendoroid and then swap the parts.

It’s coming, it’s coming!

Again!?

Your indecent mind is why you’re not allowed to be a student in the academy!
I don’t want to hear this from you!

Open your eyes wide you bastards, the super secret part! Upupupu~

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p522/jforjenius/DSC00950.jpg

Are you in despair yet? Gyahahaha! As anticipated by many it is none other than the left hand of ultimate despair of which Komaeda voraciously obtained from the queen of despair herself. Just seeing it is making my heart thump like crazy. As if it started to rain salmon!

It still wows me how someone as in love with hope as Komaeda is managed to fall into despair.

Being in love with hope and having hope are two very different things. Upupupu.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

The secret part wasn’t officially revealed before the release of the figure but in early images of the unpainted prototype, you could see the long nails of Junko’s hand clearly sculpted. There’s not much I can say about the sculpt other than that it’s faithful and even includes the bandage wrapped around his wrist.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394421085.jpeg

Paint

To sum it up, the paint isn’t spectacular. His colour palette isn’t very eye-catching to begin with and the prototype images show a lack of depth and shading in the paint too. In real life you can see the shading more easily but it’s still very light and flat overall. Now for a deeper analysis, let’s do it from head to toe.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420055.jpeg
I couldn’t capture it in photos but his hair is sparkly. Is this canon? Who knows? Is it cool? To be honest, heck yeah. It’s unnoticeable in most circumstances so you don’t need to worry about being blinded by his hair if the sun shines on it. As for the colour, I’d say they were pretty spot on with the shade though little to no attempt was made for the light pink tips of his hair which to me is forgivable since they can get away with shadow.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420951.jpeg
I’ve never been sure of what his eye colour is but whatever they did here is good. In my view, his eye colour is a grey with the slightest touch of green in it. They even included his cat eyes though I think they’re a tad too long. About the skin tone, you might be thinking that the manufacturers were too lazy or something but this shade of pale ghost is Komaeda’s actual skin tone View spoilerHide spoilerdue to his illness I presume.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/aeonblue1394420851.jpeg

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p522/jforjenius/aeonblue1386348847.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/aeonblue1394420057.jpeg

One thing I’m really happy about is that the symbol on his shirt came out perfect and without the obvious sticker mark that was on the prototype (on right).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420059.jpeg
I’m impressed at the level of detail they maintained for the chain and skull accessory. Probably the most intricately painted thing on this figure.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420849.jpeg
For the ladies.

He has a flat ass but what I wanted to show was how the chain ends. It just curls under the coat and hangs there rather than connecting to his pants. Not too sure whether this is faithful to the design and according to the official design notes it might be but anyway, it’s not too big of a deal.

The physical examination would have offered much more than this!
I'll say.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420847.jpeg
Official pictures may look quite right but in reality Komaeda’s coat is coloured a bit darker than its true colour. You can still see the green in his coat but it can look just black at times. Let’s take a closer look at the details on his coat.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420949.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394421263.jpeg

The zipper doesn’t have the cleanest application of paint but who are we kidding?
As for the ’55’ symbol on the back of his coat did you notice that the paint looks damaged, dirty or stained? Well rest assured, it’s intentional! Though probably not the most accurate since the desired effect is a faded one rather than a dirty one. I still commend them on their effort to actually remember to include it though. Also even with the default arm in, the seam is still quite noticeable compared to the opposite side.

I did have some, I suppose, paint problems though they are only minor.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420857.jpeg
This is of course all hard to see from afar but it’s still there. Just slight gashes here and there and nothing to make a fuss about but I just wanted to make sure you don’t go in expecting a flawless finish. And on his shirt…

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394421075.jpeg
Just below the red symbol there are some black marks on the two creases in his shirt. Though I think this maybe just poor application of shading since the other creases in his shirt are lightly shaded.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420843.jpeg
Zips are tiny bit sloppy on the shoes too but the paint is good with noticeable shading and everything.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394420963.jpeg
You slay me with your smile.

The right side of his bottom lip on the crazy face isn’t painted and it makes it look a bit odd.

View spoilerHide spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394421087.jpeg
The painted nails on the alternative hand are the slightest bit sloppy but overall a very good job (I’ve seen worse, a lot worse). Now if the skin tone of the hand was a bit more pink and healthy like Junko’s then it would have been perfect.

That about sums up the paint.

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p522/jforjenius/DSC00943.jpg

I thought you would never finish! When is it my turn? Characters like me weren’t made to be sidelined I’ll have you know!

Oh geez, okay, I guess you can cover the next section then.

All by myself, without interruption?
Of course.

Gyahahaha! Watch and learn. I’ll show you how reviews are really done!

In short, practical, stable, adequately sized and appropriate.

In long, is green Komaeda’s favourite colour? Favourite or not the bottle green goes hand in hand with him like a bear paw in a honey pot. Transparent and fully brandishing the crest of the academy, the base is a true tribute to Hope’s Peak. It’s nice and all but don’t you think a plump and juicy trout would look much more appealing? Upupupu better yet, the face of their handsome headmaster! Or was having a star guest appearance in the previous figure enough for them?

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p522/jforjenius/DSC00950.jpg

That’s all! Wait…that’s all!? That was bearly even an introduction!

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p522/jforjenius/DSC00944.jpg

.....Sometimes I feel like no one will really appreciate me unless I start wearing clothes and starring in children’s shows…

Pose

No need to feel bad for Monokuma, he loves despair.

Upupupu such cruelty. Maybe you do have what it takes to joi—second lastly, the pose.
His standard pose is of course the one with his left arm out and right arm down by his side. Instead of just leaving him standing straight they had him cocking his hips to the side, giving the sculpt a bit more character. It’s kind of a sassy stance of which I can say is not necessarily characteristic of Komaeda but fitting, or suitable. To be honest I can’t really see a more expressive pose on him without having a crazy or distressed face as the default. Even the Kotobukiya one (assuming they make it based on the artwork) has a pose very similar to this.

I’m not forgetting the alternative parts and they are indeed a plus in any ‘pose’ criteria. As it matches the crazy face quite nicely it’s a firm plus.

Something about the standard pose though, I can’t really seem to decide what it is he’s actually doing with his left hand. Is he reaching out his hand? No… Is it a gesture he’s making while explaining something? Hmm probably not… Is he beckoning me to come closer? Heheheh…no… Well anyway, I can’t help but be overcome with the need to place something in his hand since it really does looks like a ‘holding something’ pose to me. Maybe even a flame! But sadly I don’t have any flames lying around. It’s no longer summer in Australia.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394421265.jpeg
Heheheh. It’s relevant! And well, I did say that Monokuma loves despair.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/aeonblue1394421267.jpeg

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p522/jforjenius/DSC00943.jpg

Gyahahaha! Look at the distress in Naegi’s face! Look, I even made a cameo appearance. You might have just earned the title of Lackey of the Month!

Oh boy…yay… Maybe the despair on Naegi wasn’t worth it after all.

And isn’t that such a despairing fact?
…….

Enjoyment

What? My favourite character in SDR2 got a figure? And on top of that he happens to be a boy and surprisingly not a pretty dancing, singing or swimming one? He also retailed for 8,000円? Yes, my enjoyment is high. Very high. The alternative parts are also enjoyable. Did you see that last part with Naegi? Much enjoyment indeed. So now…

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p522/jforjenius/DSC00948-1.jpg

It’s judgement time! Everyone, put in your votes! …oops, force of habit, upupu. Everyone, pay attention to our votes!

Box: 8/10
Sculpt: 8/10
Paint: 6/10
Base: 7/10
Pose: 8/10
Enjoyment: 9/10

Overall: …..7.5/10!

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p522/jforjenius/DSC00946.jpg

That's a fair score for a company's seemingly third figure. Was the final score influenced by your creepy biases?

I like to think the ‘Enjoyment’ segment is a little bit of your biases thrown into the score. Maybe it shouldn’t be included but hey, this is about what we thought of the figure. I do think Algernon did a good job on Komaeda though and he came out cleaner than the prototype. Compared to the previous figure I think there are indeed improvements.

It was kind of hard for me to judge due to your awful pictures.
…If only Koizumi was here to help us….

Upupupu~

Well dear viewers, I’m sad to say but it’s time to say our goodbyes. We hope you enjoyed our impromptu broadcast and hope to see you again soon. But I’m sure you all know by now, I’m not a very hopeful bear. Upupupupupu.

Thanks for watching everyone and please Algernon, make more characters. _:(´□`」 ∠):_

Thanks and I'm glad you enjoyed them :P Are you waiting for Kotobukiya's to come out before making a decision? If not I would recommend doing that anyway especially if you're not into having two figures of one character.

Thanks for reading ^^ He does seem less 'sloppy' overall than Junko but I think it might be because his design has less detail than her. He's currently floating around for about 5,500 yen but it's possible that he might get cheaper.

Seriously though, good review! I actually wrote a program to help insert all the markup and so on for avatars, 4-up pictures etc. I can pass it along to you if you plan on doing more; it makes a difficult format a little less tedious to do.

It was Monokuna! It was all him! Spare this innocent and pure soul kind sir D;

Thank you! And yes please! That would be soooo helpful. The formatting was hands down the most difficult thing about this review...

My friend and I were discussing the other day whether the hand would be connected to Komaeda's nerves, or if it was supposed to just flop around...
I think by the way he's holding it up, it seems he has control over it lol

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it :3 Haha I had to grab bits from here and there but I hope I did Monokuma justice.

View spoilerHide spoilerWhen I first saw this image PICTURE #804099 it was from afar so I thought he'd come with a spear too. Which would've been awesome and really sad at the same time ;u; In the game he does actually say that he can't control it but it looks like he can doesn't it? Both on the figure and in the game. The thought of it just flopping around is admittedly quite funny x3
