Aquarion Evol - Suzushiro Mikono - Figuarts ZERO (Bandai)Aquarion Evol - Suzushiro Mikono - Figuarts ZERO (Bandai)

MaakieMaakie4 years agoReview
! This is a review will have a few panty shots !

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Suzushiro Mikono ENCYCLOPEDIA #35850 from Aquarion Evol ENCYCLOPEDIA #32777 ! This figure ITEM #103862 is made by Bandai ENCYCLOPEDIA #7624 and from the Figuarts ZERO ENCYCLOPEDIA #23596 line.

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

Aquarion Evol is an anime, manga and light novel series and is the sequel to Genesis of Aquarion. It is about an alternate future where mankind lives on a new planet, but is soon threathened by aliens. They fight back with multiple mecha's, including one called Aquarion.

Mikono is the main female protagonist, she is a very kind person, but can sometimes come off as bad-tempered and jealous. She starts off as a weak looking character, but later on in the series it turns out she has some special powers...

The reason why and how I got her

She was very cheaply on sale on HLJ, so I ended up buying her there. I thought the character design was cute (and purple is my favorite color) and I was overall interested in seeing a figure from the Figuarts ZERO line from up close. Since the price of Figuarts ZERO are inbetween that of a scaled and a prize figure, I was wondering if the quality was also something like that!

Original art

Since there isn't any artwork with the same posing, I decided to compare her with the character design.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-qU6ABRa66j0/U2T_iVMosyI/AAAAAAAAAoM/d8viCl3SyXA/s500/CI_59785_1332318889.jpg

Although the original art lacks a bit of detail, especially the coloring looks spot on when compared to the figure!

The Box

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-VJ8KiC8FeVI/U2FnxUgYV3I/AAAAAAAAAjg/iYLqQ4prJdg/s720/IMG_0713.JPG

The box design of Mikono is very cute with a lot of nice colors! The box has one huge window at the front and on one side, the rest shows pictures of the figure itself. The box size is also very nice, it doesn't take up too much space. I would have loved to see a bit of artwork also on the box, but this is not something to complain about, because the rest of the box looks so good!

First Look

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-btfGCNl5idY/U2FnyoyiEPI/AAAAAAAAAjs/ploVzf8v8kY/s720/IMG_0715.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-MfDVslugU3M/U2FnzwdvrlI/AAAAAAAAAj4/ND8eDq_XvuY/s720/IMG_0716.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-EhKSij_7N2k/U2Fn1BFgmKI/AAAAAAAAAkI/P3swJOCJMsk/s720/IMG_0718.JPG

Mikono has a small amount of blisters around her, but it protects her enough for sure! It's a bit of a downside to me that the base doesn't have a specific place in the box, but was put behind her.

Assembly

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RDKkT4vD68A/U2FnyuefQgI/AAAAAAAAAjw/OLwzXEASjjA/s720/IMG_0714.JPG

A small assembly/instruction sheet is provided. It shows how to place Mikono on her base and how to change between the two different hairpieces. These are all very simple steps, but I think it's nice that a manual is provided!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-UqXVrHwQ1Tw/U2Fn3i9OULI/AAAAAAAAAkU/zeRvXgogwJo/s912/IMG_0719.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-FrqIq4P1AYU/U2Fn4ULaQ4I/AAAAAAAAAks/IW6TS3uNRNU/s912/IMG_0720.JPG

Mikono's base needs a little bit of assembly. A small black peg is provided to push through the bottom of the base. I'm not completely sure why it's a seperate part and not already on the base itself. Mikono really needs it, because otherwise she can't stand! A small extra base is provided for her little pet, her bunny cat. Her pet has a bit of rough seamlines, but the painting is pretty clean for something so small!

Personally, I really like the style of the base with the shapes and the colors. It is a bit too big for the figure, though.

The Figure

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-U4X6XTL0IbA/U2Fn6rABs7I/AAAAAAAAAk0/BI7jYrW-GuA/s720/IMG_0724.JPG

My first impression of this figure was very good! The painting and detailing looked very clean and what a cutie!

Looking at all the details!

For the details, I'll start off with her face. There was something I quickly noticed when I was photographing her.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-t2apCgPoewc/U2Fn69xYYkI/AAAAAAAAAk8/NfPW5OItsEM/s720/IMG_0725.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-YRUajJc6sCU/U2Fn9fJFyQI/AAAAAAAAAlI/SjtG3eKKE2g/s912/IMG_0726.JPG

From quite a lot of angles, Mikono has a "derpy" face. Only when looked at from the front directly you will see the cute face she is advertised with! View spoilerHide spoilerFrom the side it actually looks like she's sticking her tongue out, now I can't unsee it.

Mikono has a small blush across her face. Judging from the prototype pictures I would have expected more, but I'm already glad at them being present! Her eyes are nicely put on decals and show a lot of color and depth. Her mouth was sculpted in a bit too deep in my opinion, but it's still looking good!

Something that goes wrong a lot with especially cheaper figures (but sometimes also seen on more expensive figures) are the bangs. Mikono luckily, has very smooth bangs when it comes to sculpting and painting.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-uYBwNLGMCKE/U2Fn-nqYJAI/AAAAAAAAAlg/T9qSrEyAfwQ/s912/IMG_0727.JPG

A lot of shading was used on her hair, giving it multiple shades of purple. Unfortunately for my copy of this figure, somebody was a bit too enthusiastic when painting her, since there is some dripping paint to be seen in her neck. I have to give some bonuspoints for how nicely the seamline from her front bangs is being hidden by the paint!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-rxyo_n15okA/U2Fn_E2zFgI/AAAAAAAAAlc/LcbmcjOQBM4/s720/IMG_0728.JPG

And now onto Mikono's hairbun, which is actually her pet! The painting on the ears sticking out of the hairbun is unfortunately very rough. Which is quite a shame, since on the cat itself the ears look very clean.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HxbPeMPLWxk/U2Fn_EkpogI/AAAAAAAAAlo/N4E4AoM91ew/s720/IMG_0729.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-IEQg9v2az-E/U2Fn_3E8y3I/AAAAAAAAAlk/b33q2nEnxpA/s720/IMG_0730.JPG

Removing the bun and replacing it for the other one is very easy. I like that they added this feature for accuracy, because if her pet is out, then she can't wear it in her hair. Personally I like her way more with her "hair accesory" in!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-GyoPcM5umqc/U2FoDJ1proI/AAAAAAAAAmI/19CQnkCqF7k/s912/IMG_0733.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-FCB3wVjPE6U/U2FoDGHr1PI/AAAAAAAAAmM/SMvNRmWMByg/s720/IMG_0735.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Q5htTF1MKtE/U2FoDuxxTOI/AAAAAAAAAmQ/IICwIOUozjo/s720/IMG_0734.JPG

Both of Mikono's hands have cute peachy nailpolish. From up-close you can see the nail polish on quite some fingers is off, with some fingers having way too much and others having not enough. Luckily here, the posing of both hands were done very well.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xAkE6liE_RI/U2FoEsbDRuI/AAAAAAAAAmY/dn0ZVTsNRR0/s720/IMG_0736.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Q0PsU8OEZSg/U2FoBJrjXjI/AAAAAAAAAl0/kAMMnsDtO44/s720/IMG_0731.JPG

The detailing on Mikono's outfit is amazing! Lots of colors and nice details! The paint is slightly off at some parts, but overall it looks amazing!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-suaUHzVuT_g/U2FoBCB9XmI/AAAAAAAAAl4/JyMxNMpQynA/s720/IMG_0732.JPG

Something inbetween I want to point out is that this figure's seamline are hidden very well. In this picture you can see one around her armpit. It looks like a bit of extra PVC was sculpted so that it would "cover" the seamlines a bit! A lot of scaled figures I own have quite obvious seamlines, I wish more manufacturers would do something like this!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ANL1uCNB7mQ/U2FoG64asWI/AAAAAAAAAmg/wXKj_1UsZ4o/s912/IMG_0737.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-cHKA7i1T15M/U2FoI0xY-_I/AAAAAAAAAmw/9XsFYzbEdsE/s912/IMG_0738.JPG

Her skirt has very nice movement and ruffles. The semi-transparant layer is a nice touch. And yes...we will also take a peek underneath that short skirt!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-7_ZUqRufbGQ/U2FoIb262yI/AAAAAAAAAms/Da8olOhFxBw/s912/IMG_0739.JPG

I was actually quite surprised at seeing Mikono wearing striped panties! Looking at her outfit I would have expected a pink panty (with maybe a small ribbon) or her wearing simple white ones. The panties themselves are quite nicely painted for such small details, some small errors are to be seen, but I also own multiple figures with striped panties where the stripes are crooked! Also shortly I have to add here: Mikono's behind is also looking good with it's overall cute shape!

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-qjH4V6hF3-Q/U2FoKbeB5MI/AAAAAAAAAnA/0pIDTUGCrlY/s720/IMG_0741.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1rehI5n8hsY/U2FoK9_nuXI/AAAAAAAAAnI/NUv3W2KWRYE/s720/IMG_0742.JPG

Last, but not least are her shoes! A lot of shading is going on here, making them really stand out! On her heels are small wings added as a detail. The shoes themselves have a high heel, making it overall look very feminine. Personally, I think the shoes are one of the best things in Mikono's design! From up-close you can see a bit of seamlines on them, the most visible seamlines on this figure so far, but everything looks very acceptable!

Summary or tl;dr

Positive
- Very cute packaging that is also not unnecessarily big!
- The sculpting details are amazing for her price!
- Display options for her hair! (More for accuracy than that it makes a big difference, but hey, it's there!)

Neutral
- Nice design on the base, but it is a bit too big for the figure.
- Small painting letdowns.

Negative
- She has quite a "derpy" face from a lot of angles.

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
The sculpting details are really good on this figure, especially for her price! I was very close to giving her a 9, but the face looking weird from a lot of angles took down the score a bit...

Painting 7/10
Not perfect, but on most places very clean looking!

Posing 8/10
Cute and bubbly, although very simple.

Base 8/10
Nice design, but a bit too big.

Packaging 8/10
Cute packaging in a good size! Only downside is that there is no specific place in the box for her base.

Enjoyment 8/10
My enjoyment with this figure is pretty high! She was a very low price and looks amazing! Although I don't know much about the series she is from View spoilerHide spoilerand to be honest reading synopsises and reviews from it also doesn't make me really interested in seeing it, I really love her character design!

Conclusion
With her price being inbetween a prize figure and a scaled figure, what you would expect is a figure looking like that. Well, Mikono is that for sure and she is maybe leaning even more towards being the quality of a scaled figure! I definitely recommend this figure to people enjoying her design or liking the Aquarion series! If you can find her for retail price or lower (secondhand), you won't regret it for sure!

Availability
A while ago this figure was on sale at a lot of places, this made a lot of collectors buy her. Now it's a bit harder to find her, so the best chance is probably buying her second hand. At the moment of writing she is inbetween 1200 (for an opened/damaged one) and 3500 (for a new/unopened one) on Mandarake and I know that in the past she was on AmiAmi pre-owned for around 2 to 2,5K yen. All prices she definitely is worth!

And to finish it!

Here is how she stands in my collection!

VioFitz (4 years ago) #2152055Whoa... She looks nice! The paintjob, the details are pretty acceptable, the products looked pretty much the same like the boxart photo shown. I love her hands because they looked so cute & her face too but, yeah... Her eyes was kinda derpy.. Call me pervy but, that detail on her blue striped panty isn't something I can expect from a girl figure with skirt...
Nice review as usual!

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised myself too! For the price she goes for (just a bit more than your average prize figure), she is great!!!

I actually have quite some figures from girls with shimapan! Although I didn't expect Mikono to be the type to wear them! :P

Thank you very much! ^w^

raptorx (4 years ago) #2131323I had yet to see the actual figure, but a quick google search is enough.. That thing really looks horrific -_- I'd rather spend those 80 euros on the average anime figure from Japanese companies XD
To think the Tales of Symphonia figures actually look gorgeous :/

Well, I think the Tales of Symphonia figures that come with the special editions of the game are actually prize figures from Japan, right? So those are already higher quality than this...thing. xD

Maakie (4 years ago) #2131272Yeah, her eyes are great! :D
With the example you give, for me it sometimes feel like they can "just get away with it" in Western countries to produce items with way lower quality, since most or at least a lot of the people here are not known to the quality of other countries/companies. A perfect example of that is the figure that came with the collector's edition of Bravely Default: ITEM #180746 A lot of collectors think she looks even worse than a bootleg, but multiple game-reviews (from Europeans) I read about this Collector's Edition, the reviewers thought it was a great thing to own the figure and admired it... o.O
Heheheh, shimapan. Aren't reviews great? ;D

raptorx (4 years ago) #2131234I like the detailing in her eyes. To think they would bother with all those different colors ;) I personally see huge differences in detailing among dinosaur figures as well. In the west we have huge figures which barely have detail at all and then we have companies like Kaiyodo with dinotales and stuff (which are really small figs) that have all detailing you could wish for. Yet the prices for the better figures seem to be lower. I never understood that *eye roll*
