Similarities in Anime IntroSimilarities in Anime Intro

How many of you have ever tried playing another anime's intro over the current intro of the anime you are watching?

https://24.media.tumblr.com/244f7753aa9d8ec86b20154c87b7ae35/tumblr_n62bu03fxR1snilr4o1_500.gifIT'S FUN TO SEE WHAT YOUR FAVORITE OP OF THE SEASON WOULD SOUND/LOOK LIKE OVER ANOTHER FAVORITE SHOW YOU LIKE TO WATCH. I DO THIS QUITE OFTEN.

AFTER SOME TIME OF DOING THIS, I DID NOTICE A PATTERN IN A LOT OF ANIME OPENINGS. THERE ARE MANY SIMILAR POINTS IN THE INTRO WHEN THE ACTION PICKS UP, POINTS WHERE CHARACTERS ARE INTRODUCED, THE PEAKS AND DOWNHILL SLIDES.. THESE THINGS ARE PLACED IN VERY SIMILAR LOCATIONS IN THE OPENING SEQUENCES OF COUNTLESS ANIME. IT MAKES ME WONDER IF THERE IS A STANDARD FOR THESE KINDS OF THINGS.

HERE'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. BELOW IS BLACK BULLET'S OP CROSSED WITH CAPTAIN EARTH'S OP BY FLUMPOOL "BELIEVER'S HIGH".

YOU'LL SEE WHAT I MEAN. ASIDE FROM THE IMMEDIATE FUN OF THIS AND WANTED TO DO THIS WITH ALL THE ANIME I WATCH, I STILL CAN'T HELP BUT WONDER WHY THEY ALL FIT SO PERFECTLY WITH ONE ANOTHER EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE MADE BY COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BANDS AND COMPANIES. I MEAN I LITERALLY DID NOTHING BUT OVERLAY THOSE TWO FILES.

IF YOU DO THIS ALSO, GOT ANY VIDEOS TO SHARE? I'D LOVE TO SEE SOME COOL MEMBER-MADE AMVS OR OPENING SWAPS.

It's probably not your imagination. It probably is largely interchangeable.

How this happens is driven by the industry practices and by the idea that once something is a hit or success, you might have another success by copying it. For some reason smartphone companies sue each other over this but entertainment companies consider it flattering. Go figure.

OPs have been driven and dictated by the song pace and moments (I am sure there is a musical term for when things happen in a song; I don't know music theory) going back to the 70s. And really before that.

Modern pop songs became a driving force in the 80s when the record labels began investing heavily in the show production and provided the songs to be used, or in some cases, actually forced them upon the producers -i.e. we'll give you the money to help make the show, but you will use THIS song/singer. Make it so! Companies like King Records, VAP, AVEX, Victor, Sony, Pony Canyon, Toshiba/EMI, Pioneer, and other music companies were all deeply involved in supplying cash and music. Many still are. Sometimes, but not always, they also ended up with the home video rights. This was once a big deal.

So the point is the music companies have been fairly involved in making the anime. And the OPs are crafted around the song, almost universally. Sometimes the anime company does contract for the song on their own. There's no rule.

But no matter who provides the song, they want it to be a hit. If a particular song is a hit, it will be copied at least in style and spirit, and the OP constructed over it will also look similar and feel similar. And so, the OPs end up looking and sounding somewhat interchangeable.

Everybody in the industry is looking at what has been successful to help guide them into finding the next success. This tends to feed-back where things become almost formulaic. Some genres have this more than others.

In my opinion, the only bad OP is one where they give away the entire show plot all the way to the end IN the opening. Sometimes this isn't obvious until the show has ended and suddenly it becomes clear the ending was being given away the entire time. Whether this matters I guess depends on whether the show is trying to have a suspenseful ending or not.

I remember someone put the tsuritama op music over mirai nikki's op and it fit so well! In a weird way. The video is on youtube but the music was muted due to copyright. Still, if you're interested you could just play the music at the same time as the video and get the same effect.

It's because all the music is roughly the same tempo to fit into a 1 minute 30 second clip properly.

lol seems I wasn't the only one who watched it. Also what Docoda said. They have stereotypes for these things as well.

Yeah, also noticed that one. And you can almost easily recognize if it's an OP or ED because of the mood of the tune (like kinda fast/upbeat for OPs and slow for ED, but not true to all though). But I guess the most common thing I see on anime OPs (or even ED) are the characters running/walking (like for most non-action anime). XD

Docoda (4 years ago) #2163223That's pretty much because OP's somewhat have a standard. It's somewhat like how music is like almost always the same. Strofe - Verse - Strofe - Verse - Bridge - Verse.
It's somewhat a weird comparison. But that kinda is how it is. My brain is working only half to explain/think about it more though.
I GET THE GIST OF WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. MUSIC LIKE THAT TENDS TO BE LESS INTERESTING OVER TIME BUT IT IS A STANDARD AFTER ALL. GOING ABOVE THAT STANDARD TAKES CREATIVITY. THE FIRST ANIME THAT COMES TO MIND THAT TOTALLY FALLS ABOVE THAT STANDARD IS MUSHISHI.
