NYCC 2014: Notes & LootNYCC 2014: Notes & Loot

Hello lovely MFC! I'm back from my journey! I decided to post some notes from this year's convention, and anyone else who attended - I welcome you to post your notable experiences as well! I've divided this post into Notes and Loot, so you can pick whichever one caters to your interests ;p

Convention notes:
View spoilerHide spoilerThursday:
First stop was the GSC booth to get my hands on Nendo Kyouko and Sayaka - but they hadn't arrived yet :( I did give Mamitan & co. a bag full of various cookies though!

I was pleased with their display this year, I legit never thought I'd get the chance to see Guts ITEM #231345 in the flesh, let alone Colossal Titan and Femto ITEM #236154. Plus Nendo Batman, Sakura, Rei and Asuka, and the Ninja Turtles... Thank you GSC, seriously, for bringing these over to NY! I FEEL SPECIAL.

Capcom panel - talked about the upcoming Monster Hunter, improving SFIV Ultra, and the Phoenix Wright Trilogy coming Dec. 9th. I tried the demo at the Capcom booth and the graphics are mighty crisp! If you're a Phoenix Wright fan with a 3DS I'd say go for it, it also has 3D support and Japanese option for $30 ($10 per game is way better than what I paid for all 3 cartridges...)

Kotobukiya Preview Panel - This panel actually helped me understand the difference between Koto's various lines. Everything announced has been added to the DB as far as I know... they had a big raffle with over a dozen giveaways, but my brother and I both lost royally (it burns when the winning number is one digit off...)

Speaking of Koto, while I was taking photos at their booth, some guy came and pointed to Nina Williams ITEM #198277 :

Guy: See, didn't we already talk to Marvel about this kind of pose?
Me: Huh? Oh, broken spine syndrome, ha!
Guy: Anyone who buys this probably has some problems and needs to get a girlfriend. <- poor comment
Me: Hmm... anyone who buys that probably already has a waifu! <- poor joke response
Guy: Well if he has a wife that relationship might need some work!
Me: Not wife. WaiFU.
Guy: Well if he has wifi he needs to use it for something other than downloading porn!

Ok, I understand it was a shitty joke but missing twice in a row? OTL OTL OTL

Nintendo - WHY DIDN'T YOU HAVE A BOOTH THIS YEAR?

~
Friday:
Marvel panel: Marvel had a panel made of 5 back-to-back panels. The first one was about X-Men and it was cool, but the second one was so boring IMO, I left afterwards. I spent the time in there cleaning out my StreetPass backlog (NYCC is a boon for streetpassing) and being amused/irritated:
- The guy next to me kept having his phone go off. When I looked at him he looked at me like it wasn't him.
- Little kid behind me kept talking loudly.
- Woman near kid glared at the kid, but then started talking loudly herself.
- They all left, two guys came in and started talking loudly. Phone guy turned around and glared at them. Turn your damn phone off before you give anyone dirty looks! *spits*

Shoujo Kakumei Utena screening: The person manning the door was rude and a little dumb? In any case, I'm sorry but this is not a good dub. The acting is flat and I thought Utena's last name is TenjOH, not TenjUU. The people who actually stuck around to watch were laughing at it mockingly, and then I realized they really stuck around for the Naruto screening afterwards.

I got to meet maggie from here on MFC! But then I got distracted by my Tetris addiction. Sorry T~T

~
Saturday:
Aniplex Panel: DID ANYONE GET IN? Room was maxed out so I gave up :( What did they announce? What did they give away?
Anime News Network: Pure Q&A, I could barely hear anything being said. Audience was rude and talking loudly too. I used the time to work on StreetPassing again.
Capcom booth: I got autographs from the crew from Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist. If you're a SF fan you should definitely watch it... I'm normally not big on such productions but this is pro level stuff. I took pictures with the actors of Ryu, Goki and Akuma, but Goken was busy diligently signing. It seems so in character though, lol! (Ken was not present but I would have loved to meet him!)
Titmouse Animation: A staffer told me the room would not be swept between panels, so I sat for Titmouse while waiting for the Aniplex KLK panel. I actually liked it a lot!
Kill la Kill OVA (Ep 25) and Dub (Ep 7): Awesome screening. They gave out free KLK posters and the dub voice of Mako appeared and did Q&A. Did anyone else go? What did you make of that Nudist Beach Nonon cosplayer? She was spot on and letting it all hang out. I'm not even a big Nonon fan but my heart couldn't take it, MY GOD!

Also lol... why can't anyone pronounce Mankanshoku? The host missed every single time.

~
Sunday:
I took my brother with me. We tried the Sonic BOOM demo. For anyone curious: It's the Sonic version of Ratchet & Clank. If you liked that, then go for Sonic Boom. :p We also got that huge Sonic BOOM bag which I forgot to photograph below.
Street Fighter panel: The aforementioned actors held a panel about Assassin's Fist and talked aout the BD release. I hope to see more from them but I understand these things take time and diligence...
I also wondered what they do to performed the Shouryuken. Trampoline or what? Answer: Harnesses. I'm not sure what's scarier!

Afterwards we went out to EAT. I don't eat convention food, the closest thing is a single McDonald's... I keep light snacks and coffee milk in my purse, and when the con is over I eat!!

Loot:
View spoilerHide spoilerBesides Nendos, I spent a lot less this year than usual. There are some booths I always hit up but this year they didn't have much that interested me. So, I didn't make any purchases on t-shirts or doujinshi, which lowered the final tab a lot.

From Storyofthedoor:
I met this lady Cari Corene at the tail end of last year's con and her paintings are orgasmic. I bought 3 prints from her right then and there. This year I bought two scarves and a print of this Venus painting:

BTW, she's a huge Cardcaptor Sakura fan and her next magical girl painting plans are just that. I'd stay tuned if I were you.

This one is a favorite, it's a nice reminder that this game takes place in a huge forest.

From Capcom: Street Fighter lanyard
Since this year's con lanyard was a plain black string (I collect event lanyards, although the con ones are usually just ugly advert ones).
From some damn booth: Nemuneko!
I skipped on this last year and regretted it. It's sooooo squishy and soft. Not my first color choice but I shopped around for the best price. Love it!

My brother won the Madoka scale poster from the GSC rock/paper/scissors giveaway! We also got balloons from the booth \o/ (*I* had to carry all of those, gao! LOL) When I woke up the balloons stopped floating though :(

And he got some Pokemon prints of Pikachu and Rattata from Storyofthedoor (if you like Pokemon, check her new Arcanine painting... I wanted to cave so bad but I have no space... and I don't even play Pokemon!)

I still have a ton of photos from the con to upload... bear with me!
How did y'all fare at the function? :D

It looks very pretty and it gives me those warm Animal Crossing feelings, haha. Is this weird?

maggie (4 years ago) #2399664ARRRGH!! I REAAALLLLY wanted to see that kill la kill panel but I only had passes for thurs & fri. Not that I'm complaining, I had a stellar time! Plus it's not like I don't have tons of KLK stuff haha!
Glad you had a good time, you got so much stuff done!! Obata stuff took up almost the entirety of my two days, but I got to do everything I prioritized.

It got pretty rowdy, with the panel director asking everyone to take a panorama photo of a Mako pose and to do a recording of chanting "Kill la Kill!" to show fans in Japan!

nyamilks.tumblr... <-- Dub!Mako doing Satsuki's speech, on a chair with a cosplay sword

iTheShirt (4 years ago) #2399758Thanks for the poster shots! It's a shame I couldn't go. Maybe next year? xD The pictures of the loot look great. You should've taken more mate!
Definitely come next year if you can! There are more photos, I just need to work through them. I prioritized figure photos of things not yet released for the little batch I uploaded so far. :p

SpaceDyeVest (4 years ago) #2399771I'm jealous that your brother got a GSC poster...I was trying to get Mamitan to accept my name on a piece of paper, with the word "rock," "paper," or "scissor" on it to enter me into the competition, since I wasn't going to be there on Sunday, but they wouldn't go for it. I wanted to get one of my pass winners to try to win one for me, but that didn't work out either. They had a really nice assortment of posters on the booth walls (but not too much else going on in those glass encasements...nowhere near as good as last year).
I liked this year's figure selection! What figures would you have liked to see? The Sonico Rock 'n' Roll Valentine is tempting me even more now that I've seen her up close ;_;
I think a good balance is "what's unreleased and upcoming" and "what's recent and outstanding" - there was a lot of the former and not too much of the latter, but all the same I'd rather see something new over, say, the Madoka figure set again.

On the flip, Kotobukiya finally stepped their booth game up. I always wondered why their display was lacking in Cu-poche and their anime figure line, so I was happy to see a healthy mix this year.

sarunamirabu (4 years ago) #2399826I got the Devil Homura poster this year :) I had a decently fun time (mostly just taking the photos of things) and it was hilarious to me that mostly guys came up to me about my cosplay which makes me slightly rethink the Free! fan base, especially with one of the guys I swear trying to hit on me or something--
I went over budget though and spent the equivalent to my intended convention budget at the IA PROJECT booth OTL;;;;

So it was YOU! Mamitan did say the Homu poster was given away previously D: That was the one I wanted most, but it's okay. Those posters take up hella wall space. In any case, I was keeping an eye out for you. I figured if anything you'd come to the poster raffle... now I see why you didn't :p
BTW - did I ever send you last year's photos? I'm having a brainfart >.<
I saw that IA booth at the last hours, they had some discounted tote bags down to $20. Tell me you didn't buy those!

Ardenor (4 years ago) #2399954It sounds like you had an amazing time! After four straight days(!) of NYCC and everything it had to offer from merchandise to panels to weird people at the booths, are you content with everything? Or are you experiencing con withdrawals? I'm usually exhausted after these sort of events, but sometimes it's difficult letting the experience go. It feels all so fleeting.
Hey, did you see any impressive cosplayers over the weekend?

I used to get that 'con withdrawal' feeling at the end of NYCC. I think what helped me bypass that this year is the familiarity that's building. This is year 6 for me, and even though every year they change some things up some things really stay the same. The exhibition floor, for example, for the past few years has had the same layout and many booths end up with the same spot. So it sort-of builds this feeling of "no need to fret, everything will be as is when I get back a year from now."

I am tired though, lol!

I didn't do much cosplay photography... again. Sigh.
I was hoping to see an Akuma Homura.... no dice. I saw a couple of Ultimate Madokas though. Also, this year's 'common cosplay' was Bob's Burgers characters.

I finally thought of a cosplay I'd like to do... not telling who. I can't sew though.... :(
