Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters - Malik Ishtar - ARTFX J (Kotobukiya)Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters - Malik Ishtar - ARTFX J (Kotobukiya)

MaakieMaakie3 years agoReview
! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

! This is a review of a male figure that has a bare torso-option, that maybe can be considered NSFW by some !

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Malik Ishtar ENCYCLOPEDIA #9014 from Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters ENCYCLOPEDIA #22169 ! This figure ITEM #166660 is made by Kotobukiya ENCYCLOPEDIA #7621 .

I will start off with telling some more about his background.

Background

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a manga series created by Kazuki Takahashi. It tells the story of the young boy Yuugi Mutou who lives together with his grandfather that owns a game shop. From a young age Yuugi has always been playing games by himself, since he gets bullied a lot at school. One day he solves an puzzle that turns out to be an ancient artifact from Egypt! The artifact, called the Sennnen (Millenium) Puzzle, gives him a wish. Yuugi being a lonely boy, wishes that he would get friends. The artifact makes his wish come true, but in exchange a spirit can take over his body whenever he wants! This spirit is called "the other Yuugi" or "the dark side of Yuugi" and is the complete opposite from the Yuugi that has solved the puzzle. The other Yuugi loves to play Shadow Games, which makes the losing player in the game lose something that is very important to them... Later on in the series, Yuugi gets on better terms with the spirit inside him and they can talk together or change the host of the body at will.

The original series (manga 1-7 and the first televion anime) is about a lot of different games, mainly played as "Shadow Games" by "the other Yuugi". The second adaption of the series (manga volume 8 and further and the anime called Duel Monsters) almost completely focusses on an extended version of the cardgame that gets introduced in the beginning of the series.

Malik is first seen in the anime when he enters as a new bad guy in season 2 of the Duel Monsters series. Telling too much about his past would give a lot of spoilers, so I'll keep it at this: Malik has a past related to Yami Yuugi ENCYCLOPEDIA #16245 and goes very far in trying to gain more power to defeat him. He also has a split personality that's his pure evil side called Yami Malik ENCYCLOPEDIA #19220 , whose figure ITEM #119377 was released a few months before this one. Yami Malik's figure I have also reviewed here: BLOG #16783 Before I continue with the review I think it's a good thing to mention that Malik was one of my first anime-crushes when I started watching anime in my teens, so maybe at some points I will swoon a bit too much about him!

The reason why and how I got him

I have been a huge Yu-Gi-Oh!-fan from the first moment I saw Duel Monsters dubbed on local television. After only airing 2 seasons they stopped showing it here, making me interested in more! During that time I already started watching anime in Japanese, so I decided to also watch Duel Monsters in Japanese. Later on, I found out about the original series before Duel Monsters and watched that also, and I ended up really liking the originality in all the Shadow Games that were made. During my teens I collected quite some "toys" that were sold locally from Yu-Gi-Oh (and yes, I know, I should really make some time soon to upload all those to the database). When they announced the trading figures and the first scaleds in the One Coin Grande and ARTFX J line from Kotobukiya, I was so amazed and happy! I never expected a series I loved to get figures after the airing stopped 6-7 years ago! As excited as I was I decided for myself to pre-order all the items they were making from Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. Now with even more recent announcements such as two figma's and a new scaled Black Magician Girl and very unexpectedly Yami Bakura going up for pre-order, this part of my collection keeps growing and growing!

Original art

From what I could find, there is no specific artwork the figure is made after.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-20bJ05R5fVk/VFEoN54giDI/AAAAAAAACH0/grEk7KJkwRc/s428/malik.jpg

Comparing him to his anime-counterpiece, most of the details look spot-on! The only main differences are the color of his shirt (it's a lot lighter on the figure) and his skin color (which also seems to be lighter on the figure).

Malik or Marik?

As same of you have maybe noticed, the name Malik is sometimes written down as Marik. Is there a difference, and is there a good or wrong? Well, simply put, the original Egyptian name he has is Malik. But because in Japan the "l" sound is nonexistent, it gets replaced a lot bij the "r" sound. Making the Japanese writing and pronounciation of the name: Marik. When the series was sold to the US, where an English dub was made, either they weren't paying attention, or they though Marik would sound a lot cooler, so the dubbed version of the anime also uses the name Marik. Fans of the series in general tend to call his evil personality "Malik", while calling good one "Marik", to make it more distinctive (this was also used when the figure was added to the database here). For me personally I always use the name Malik for the good side and Yami Malik for the bad side, since the original Egyptian name is Malik.

The Box

Big in Japan shipped the figure in a box where it just fit!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-NMsqx3MWQmg/VFEh0JHk88I/AAAAAAAACAI/pX5nRDAKhP0/s720/IMG_2240.JPG

Luckily the figure arrived in perfect condition and it's especially thanks to the shipping that nothing went wrong!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-0mKOp5kUTTk/VFEh3YeeVDI/AAAAAAAACAk/AkaCfVjZLsA/s720/IMG_2249.JPG

The box design is quite similar to the other Yu-Gi-Oh! Kotobukiya figures. The front has a big window that also shows the alternative torso he comes with. The side- and backwindows are shaped after his Sennen Rod (Millenium Rod). Especially the back window gives you a good look at the back of this figure! The side window doesn't show much and I think both are more meant as decorative. On the left-side is a nice Photoshop with multiple angles of the figure.

First Look

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YxHX9AFZXd0/VFEh4ACVElI/AAAAAAAACAw/9a1I4xZdYeU/s720/IMG_2250.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1UB3L9R9lC4/VFEh6SSS9OI/AAAAAAAACBE/LzRAzUE60TI/s720/IMG_2251.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-JWb4sCGxCmY/VFEh5wXYbiI/AAAAAAAACA8/oB2JJVcpfIw/s720/IMG_2252.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-YJLsrD1gUYU/VFEh6mpNcdI/AAAAAAAACBI/hmXpn1QzJaA/s720/IMG_2253.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-q4hiTuDr498/VFEh7rMimXI/AAAAAAAACBQ/A3sciDCtulM/s912/IMG_2254.JPG

There is lots of space inbetween each part and I love how they made the part around his face open (you can take a good look at him)! In the blisters you can also see that he comes with a complete extra torso instead of a cast-off function that was expected by many. They also give you te possibility to display him with and without duel disk and with and without Sennen Rod.

Wait...wait...no first release pre-order bonus in there?

Unfortunately no. This is the first figure from this line to not have a first release pre-order bonus (it is not known for Yami Bakura (the next one up), but he probably will also come without one). My personal guess is that the extra torso added a lot of costs, so they decided to skip on the bonus. Also there isn't much room left in the blisters, so they probably would have to make the box a lot bigger to hold it. Which increases shipping costs and could make the shops and buyers unhappy. Also in general a small bonus like that could have made the price of the figure 1-2K yen more, which I think most collectors wouldn't find it worth that amount. Those are the possible reasons I can think of. From what I could find, no official reason was ever given.

The Figure

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-EPhbPmhGIIo/VFEh8dUv35I/AAAAAAAACBY/y_Te3SUy3Hw/s1024/IMG_2256.JPG

Malik comes with probably the biggest instruction sheet I've ever gotten! It explains everything very well.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-0zZUs4buTec/VFEh9IcPQoI/AAAAAAAACBo/QFodIdv8KHI/s912/IMG_2257.JPG

Just as with the others from the set, he comes screwed in his base. It makes the figure very sturdy though, so I'm not complaining.

First impression - Clothed and with duel disk.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-mqtvcKOQmv8/VFEh98f-YJI/AAAAAAAACBs/VivVLSIg4mM/s720/IMG_2258.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vXYoL5rSLNU/VFEh-JAFrgI/AAAAAAAACBw/X4Wt1BgNcRA/s720/IMG_2259.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-om04g8rKhuc/VFEh-oDaNvI/AAAAAAAACB8/U08v0_Mx8sk/s720/IMG_2260.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-wWHrb9Iqk7E/VFEh_f02W2I/AAAAAAAACCE/Ic_eeo8Bj6g/s720/IMG_2261.JPG

My first impression of Malik was very good. I especially liked the shine-effect Kotobikya made on his eyes. His bright colored shirt grabbed my attention quickly, after which I slowly also started inspected smaller details, with all the gold jewelry standing out most.

Looking at all the details! - Clothed and with duel disk.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nCJTEg8E9AY/VFEh_xzOxHI/AAAAAAAACCI/0Iebz791BZ0/s720/IMG_2262.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-nevEO32dF-w/VFEiBvM1IXI/AAAAAAAACCc/diyXeVGdCss/s800/IMG_2264.JPG

Malik's hands are really delicately sculpted. All of his fingernails have a small gloss.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Ej0YvOIY9Sk/VFEiApRCZkI/AAAAAAAACCQ/Eg6Kj_EOvSw/s800/IMG_2263.JPG

Unfortunately Kotobikya keeps continuing to not paint anything on the front of the trading cards. I have been thinking of this as bothersome since the first figures in this line and it's still happening even with more more recent figures! Even if was just a simple decal with a low-res picture of a monster and not even text on it, I would be happy! I really hope with the Yami Bakura ITEM #119376 that went up for pre-order recently, that they decide to finally paint the backside of the cards!!!

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-W7PQiNTrM_8/VFEiBkwEETI/AAAAAAAACCo/elBbNOpmZfQ/s720/IMG_2265.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-v1aQbHalCQw/VFEiCQWiNyI/AAAAAAAACC8/zBt2CNFtLzU/s720/IMG_2267.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-PHiNqLXnFMU/VFEiCkQQvEI/AAAAAAAACC4/GcaBoS-Za7E/s720/IMG_2268.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-hPDil-_wVJs/VFEiBz5j77I/AAAAAAAACCw/m_GYZF8ekjo/s720/IMG_2266.JPG

Malik's Duel Disk looks amazing! With every figure in this line I have seen the Duel Disk slightly getting better! I think here that especially with the paint, they did a great job! The Duel Disk now also has more sculpted parts, such as the discard pile being more open. Just looking at this makes me want to grab my own Duel Disk ITEM #46564 again, although mine isn't this pretty!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rGqjKm9Gtkc/VFEiDGzpxjI/AAAAAAAACDE/cTBv4WG4g2Q/s720/IMG_2270.JPG

The transition of his duel disk to his bracelet is a bit sloppy, especially at the bottom. With silver paint being on the jewellry and gold paint being on the Duel Disk.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-X1Za3gk43q0/VFEiDl9qNkI/AAAAAAAACDI/dMsswFwBedc/s720/IMG_2271.JPG

Now, onto his shirt! They made the purple a lot lighter than his anime-counterpart, but it doesn't bother me much, as I like here how it stands out compared to his skin color!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-mVvRepLqYD4/VFEiETPndEI/AAAAAAAACDU/1NL_Bkw6h0c/s912/IMG_2272.JPG

Already judging from when he was inside the box, I was afraid of the chains being rough again just like with Yami Malik...and I was right. It are very intricate details and I can understand them being hard to make, but I own a lot of figures with real chains, so I think that would already be better instead of trying to make these small details in PVC...

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ydnWtZmDynA/VFEiEsgZCOI/AAAAAAAACDY/zajr3k7AUy0/s720/IMG_2273.JPG

No shading on his shirt, just some wrinkles. The hood of his shirt is a bit weird, as it doesn't look like one that can be put over your head.

And now, for changing his looks!

To go from the fully clothed version to the bare-top version, you first need to switch his hairpiece.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Ypc5RSNhRow/VFEiGIEcXEI/AAAAAAAACDs/EleOZ1dbf3g/s800/IMG_2275.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-_xA-eecQnHM/VFEiFUhtDBI/AAAAAAAACDg/zwCXvMLEQsE/s800/IMG_2274.JPG

The hairpieces look almost identical, but when you put them on his face, you will notice that one of them forces his head to look sideways. This is really important, since his back will be one of the focus points of his alternate look.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6QQVo82N8NA/VFEiGdUDrzI/AAAAAAAACD0/f-_7DmwOJpY/s720/IMG_2276.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Udq7ACzjLEQ/VFEiGyx2x9I/AAAAAAAACD8/agLkT1ip9bs/s912/IMG_2277.JPG

The second torso has a big "B" written on his neck and inside the second hairpiece is also a "B" (it's a bit hard to see on the picture).

First impression - Bare chest with Sennen Rod.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-FrFw5XqBUr0/VFEiHmVmGcI/AAAAAAAACEE/QcAz5UHLOjk/s720/IMG_2278.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-grxxtddOBis/VFEiIMPYJQI/AAAAAAAACEM/Wi0KcCgWwwc/s720/IMG_2279.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KAFeAEEu9t0/VFEiIvmPeHI/AAAAAAAACEU/ohPqsLfHtu0/s720/IMG_2280.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-tbzLy6U5W78/VFEiJFPCJ8I/AAAAAAAACEc/6Xgt9eTOcCo/s720/IMG_2281.JPG

"Unfff. He looks so good!" was my first thought when I had him set up with his alternate torso!

Looking at all the details! - Bare chest with Sennen Rod.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-OnwihrZDOiY/VFEiJkWszKI/AAAAAAAACEg/1ABd1xwnsAY/s720/IMG_2282.JPG

His face is just so beautiful and I love his eye decals! I really like how Kotobukiya stayed true to the original art-style of the series with the "Egyptian" eyes!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6-tsExbWHqw/VFEiKReU1gI/AAAAAAAACEo/pA5TEbzavp0/s912/IMG_2283.JPG

The connection from his neck to his torso is a bit awkward, though. Especially looking from a bit lower at him you can see how they are seperate pieces. This is something common with figures with removeable heads (although I also saw it a few times on figures without it too).

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Fhaj9bUYwn4/VFEiLNm0Q3I/AAAAAAAACFM/7o_QwIcZKtU/s912/IMG_2284.JPG

Malik has a typical Yu-Gi-Oh! hairstyle! The movement and layers in it are very nice, but there are some small defects that look like scratches/damages in the PVC that happened before painting the figure.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-SU35YoPpE_U/VFEiLay3FHI/AAAAAAAACE8/zdN4bqSXdQU/s720/IMG_2285.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-7vKDHfvIeBk/VFEiLif8HII/AAAAAAAACFI/5VX0BwGCsaI/s720/IMG_2286.JPG

Inbetween the spikes in his hair you can see a few seamlines, but there are no big flaws. The spikes could have been a bit more pointy for me, as they now are quite crude.

The shading of Malik's hair is very nice and ends with some darker tips at the bottom.

And now we move a bit below and...

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ArecNXX5JLA/VFEiMFR3xQI/AAAAAAAACFE/ry-Vj7yoURA/s720/IMG_2287.JPG

Okay I'm back. Let's just say he is good looking! His muscles are very defined and I like the shape of his chest. Something interesting to mention are the nipples. Unfortunately they don't have much detail or paint, but in general nipples are a lot of times skipped to sculpt on male figures, so it's a very good sign that Malik has them (makes the overall look of his chest more masculine for me too)!

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-5p213R7uTxg/VFEiMUZZWMI/AAAAAAAACFQ/9EbnpSW43EU/s720/IMG_2291.JPG

From the side you can also see how he's really slim, but still with a lot of muscle. I'm not an expert on male anatomy, but I think in real life it couldn't be possible for someone with such a ripped stomach to be so slim.

I like how some more details were sculpted, such as more muscles showing next to his chest and his armpits. There are a lot more details on his bare torso than I expected!

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-feZbiah_nXQ/VFEiNUxB_aI/AAAAAAAACFY/j1LthM0CtFw/s912/IMG_2292.JPG

Malik also has quite some muscle in his arms (although not as extreme as his stomach). I like how the golden jewellry tightly fits around it.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-hqXX8umzsdw/VFEiOOt_d-I/AAAAAAAACFk/IeNlEGxPw_s/s720/IMG_2293.JPG

The Sennen Rod is pretty simple when it comes to sculpt, the painting is only one type of golden color. There is one big seamline at the bottom part of the staff that is a bit distracting.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-gI3Wci4JFPY/VFEiPLIer9I/AAAAAAAACF4/elNlOciS8TU/s912/IMG_2296.JPG

Also here his hands were sculpted very nicely and the paint on his fingernails is done very well.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-RrXtfOIOD-I/VFEiPjy11fI/AAAAAAAACF8/KVD3Yk76nks/s720/IMG_2297.JPG

And now his gorgeous back! I love it so much! View spoilerHide spoilerThis is a spoiler about this characters' past: View spoilerHide spoilerI really love how they sculpted the details in his back, as in the series he gets these markings carved into him (it's not a tattoo, it's scarification). I'm so glad they didn't do it the lazy way and just slapped a decal on there! A little bit of shading was used inside the sculpt (they forgot a few small spots, but it still looks great)! All the details are very small, but they look very crisp. This is defenitely the most detailed part of this figure!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-3DSqKFffSyA/VFEiP7wY3PI/AAAAAAAACGA/7CfFnSVUSSU/s720/IMG_2300.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-JzeKMM9k5dM/VFEiQCG0T1I/AAAAAAAACGI/4LZ1a6wN72k/s720/IMG_2301.JPG

Malik has very nice, long legs. His pants are simple in detail, but the creases make it stand out more!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-aW9kygm1t6M/VFEiRD4PWxI/AAAAAAAACGQ/ctUQIGL1A_w/s912/IMG_2302.JPG

It looks like his behind is a bit bigger than the behinds of other Yu-Gi-Oh! characters from this line. I always expected that of you, Malik! View spoilerHide spoilerhttp://images.rapgenius.com/f34d9d9a9e99cc5d96715a3f97d7907a.500x333x1.jpg

Something that is a bit of a letdown, but also specific to my copy of this figure I think, are some painting errors on and near his belt.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K4h99_F9Y80/VFEiSL3NCbI/AAAAAAAACGc/ZRvC3ElIWmo/s912/IMG_2303.JPG

Also when looking at the front of his belt here and in general the crotch-area, it seems like here the most mistakes were made. There is either a glue-spot or a mistake in shading-error directly next to his crotch View spoilerHide spoileror Malik was very happy to see me, directly underneath his belt buckle I can see a line of glue and also the blue of the belt itself is quite messy. I can't believe I was just looking at his amazingly detailed back, to directly after that see so many small flaws on his belt/crotch!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--WWVDwwDfnk/VFEiScy6nnI/AAAAAAAACGg/hF5_BTtjqxM/s720/IMG_2304.JPG

Luckily on the pants themselves there are not much errors. The details on his pants look completely the same to me as the pants of Yami Malik and I'm pretty sure they used the same sculpt and only changed the color of his pants. For comparison: View spoilerHide spoiler

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-mqtvcKOQmv8/VFEh98f-YJI/AAAAAAAACBs/VivVLSIg4mM/s720/IMG_2258.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hbz8C0UkiB4/VBYBR5EE7mI/AAAAAAAABXs/9dvycwDSr70/s720/IMG_1803.JPG

Yami Maliks' belt and crotch weren't this messed up, though.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-U_mJGhn2n5o/VFEiTPy2BUI/AAAAAAAACGo/Bydbwsohzcw/s912/IMG_2305.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kg6Heyy0TVo/VFEiUU-mV2I/AAAAAAAACGw/OOJdYggGwo0/s912/IMG_2306.JPG

The shoes were also re-used from Yami Malik's sculpt, but this time they have gotten a glossy finish. The details are minimal, but I like them!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-k-pExXeXqQI/VFEiVixr-BI/AAAAAAAACHA/8jnwWeVq6rw/s912/IMG_2308.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-5He2csLp6Ys/VFEiVVuBasI/AAAAAAAACG8/z-DQsVzIejk/s912/IMG_2307.JPG

Malik's base follows the rest of this line and is a piece of concrete with cracks and rubble. This base is also a direct re-use of Yami Malik's base (comparison: View spoilerHide spoiler

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-nfuT_YAkMa0/VBYBmvTPN0I/AAAAAAAABbo/P4gsHCyj9XI/s912/IMG_1841.JPG
), but this time they have heavily improved the base. Which is very visible! The amount of shading and detail in texture has increased a lot! It is a huge improvement, but unfortunately because all the figures of this line have such likewise bases, I can't go completely lyrical about it. But I have to give a small applause to Kotobukiya for improving the same sculpt so drastically by adding the shading!

Summary or tl;dr

Positive
- Nice packaging, just like the others from the set.
- Comes with a complete seperate torso that changes a lot to his looks!
- Very good detailing, especially in the face and on his bare torso.
- He's so good looking, just wow! Even for people not fan of Yu-Gi-Oh!, they must at least think he's handsome?
- There are in general not much figures of male characters with a bare chest, so this can only be encouraged!
- Improved base details compared to the others of this line!

Neutral
- Bit of paint let-downs.
- A bit lazy to use the same leg sculpt for Malik and Yami Malik, but it was to be expected.
- No first release pre-order bonus.

Negative
- Still no front images on the trading cards!!!
- Some details are a bit too rough, such as the chains on his shirt and some seamlines. Also what is going on around his belt/crotch?!

The Scores

Sculpting 9/10
I am really impressed with his sculpt! There are lots of improvements compared to earlier releases of this line!

Painting 7/10
There are no big flaws, but there are quite a lot of small errors, which I think is very unexpected. I'm also having a slight hunch for Kotobikya to decide to still not paint the front of the cards, I hope to see that improved when Yami Bakura will be released!

Posing 7/10
Maybe a bit too simple and minus points for re-using the exact same legs and shoes from Yami Malik's figure.

Base 8/10
It is the usual base from this set, but big improvements have been made in the painting and shading of it!

Packaging 8/10
Nice design packaging overall. The box is not too big and not too small.

Enjoyment 10/10
Malik was one of my first anime crushes and to have a figure from him that looks so good and also shows off his incredibly detailed back is like a dream come true! He is not perfect, but I couldn't be happier!

Conclusion

As a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh or a fan of the character Malik, this figure is one you shouldn't miss! If you are into pretty looky guys in general, this is also a figure you should really think about owning! Keep in mind this figure is not perfect, but he is very acceptable if you look at his price (which is lower than the average scaled figure). His alternate torso is a great addition!

Availability

Just like the others from this set, this figure is not that easy to find second hand. If it pops up, his price is also close to his release price. I have seen him varying from 6000-8000 yen. For my own pre-order I paid 6795 yen (7975 including shipping unregistered SAL). In general I recommend fans of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters series to pre-order the figures of the characters you like, as they go for a good price and it can become quite a hunt if you want to find them afterwards (and you'll probably end up paying just as much for a second hand copy as you could have bought it new)!

And to finish it!

Currently I have my figures in storage, but here is how I used to display him in my collection!

VioFitz (3 years ago) #2485139I see... I guess he's meant to be like that afterall...
Well, maybe it's just me because when I saw several shots of his closeup hands, I feel like they're kinda girlish since they looked so delicate.
U welcome! No worries, take your time there! :)

Hehe, no problem. The guys in Yu-Gi-Oh!, well not all, but a lot of them are quite drawn like supermodels. xD Long legs, big hairdo's and pretty stylish clothes. A lot of them wear quite some jewellry too!

Haha yeah I'm taking even more time now since I recently got a new job and I also try to work on cosplay more. Busy as always. xD

Maakie (3 years ago) #2476122Haha, yeah I'm really happy with this figure! One of my favorite characters of the series and he got a figure! Thank you, Kotobukiya! <3
And yeah, in YGODM the drawing style makes everyone (and especially guys) have really long legs and a very slim build. Example of Malik in the manga:

Oh, that's actually really interesting, because I think his hands are pretty big in comparison to his overall slim body. Even though his nails are colored a bit, the size of the hands feels quite manly for me. The rest of his body is indeed quite like a pretty boy (muscled, but not too wide).
And thank you! :D I'm very busy currently, but I hope to have a new review up in not very long! ^^

VioFitz (3 years ago) #2472860This is another hell of a crazyass figure ever made! I was surprised to see that intense details on him, I also think that his face was accurate enough. They really did awesome job on him, I can clearly see you're so overjoyed on him.
I agree with you that he looks kinda slim but, maybe that's how his proportions supposed to be in the show? Atleast for me this isn't my kind of male figure that I'm interested. It's not about his design but, his slim proportions was like too much shown like pretty boy/girly size. Frankly, When I see his hands, I thought that's a girl's hands since they looked so delicate.
Nice Review as usual there, I always liked the way you review the meticulous spots of the figure.

Chloe-tsundere (3 years ago) #2464947Nah i agree, she looks redbrown to me as well, ive seen redheads.. Doesnt look like it..
I googled redbrown and pretty much resembles that pic.
Actually it all has to do with chromosones being recessive.. And brown is more dominant :) red is recessive
Thats also why you wont see a redhead with brown eyes ^^ if there is anything dominant in the chromosones, no redhead

When I think of a real life (not anime) redhead I think of the more orange-ish red and the person also having freckles etc. But yeah also the "old" series has Asuka with less bright red. For comparison: View spoilerHide spoiler

Version that I watched:

DBZfantomStrikR (3 years ago) #2465069Awesome review!!! XD, love how you got all the little details too and your own opinions. Right now, I have on my wishlist both Dark Magicians and Dark Magician Girl but after reading your review, i'm considering getting the duelist figures. They just look sooo good XD. An awesome job by Kotobukiya indeed. Also, very nice that you got all those Yu-Gi-Oh figs

Thank you! ^^

Black Magician and Black Magician Girl are also great, but personally I have more attachment to most of the human members of the cast. ;)

Yeah~ I'm proud of my collection and can't wait for new releases to add to my shelves! :3

Maakie (3 years ago) #2464643Okay, then I'm just colorblind or we call colors in a different way, because I'm not English-speaking myself. xD (Or it could also be because of a combination of the old quality screenshots + difference in language :P).
View spoilerHide spoilerIt's pretty cool that tattoos are so accepted there! Here it also isn't really seen as related to crime and not a problem to show your tattoos off in your free time, but on the workplace it's not okay at all. A funny thing is that I know someone that is completely covered in tattoos except for his face, neck, hands and feet. He has a high-end office job and is in suit every day. Nobody would ever expect him to look like that underneath the suit. And it's quite a funny thing as I know him as the person without the suit, but the few times I saw him in his suit...I would have never guessed him to be covered in tattoos! Anyway if it would be 100% accepted and everyone could just show piercings/tattoos that could be great! Here the only job where you are allowed to show them off is if you work in a tattoo shop!
Oh my, if I did that I probably couldn't think about anything else and would be so afraid of hurting the other person or myself! >.<
Ah, Shinji isn't a pussy at all. Just a highly misunderstood teenager that gets way too much responsibilites thrown at him. Count on top of that his dad being not nice to him and I can completely understand! Although he still annoyed me at points, I just can't get myself to like him. Although if I would only look at the Shinji from the last 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 movies, he's pretty okay. ;)

Gohan (3 years ago) #2464762Very thorough review! Kotobukiya has really done a good job with the Yu-Gi-Oh! figures.

Thank you very much for the nice comment! :)

Kotobukiya picked up a franchise I would never expect to get recognition again and they are also making figures of a mainly male cast, something that is also rarely seen! It is great! :D
