Popin' Cookin' Sushi Set review and experiences

MaakieMaakie2 years agoReview
As promised in my earlier Candysan Loot Post blog/18658 , today I will be talking about my first experience with a Popin' Cookin' set! For the people wondering what that is: Popin' Cookin' are small Do-It-Yourself sets where you make small candy of existing food!

The set I bought was the Sushi Set, with the main reason I bought it, was that it looked really cute and the only time I tried to make real sushi I failed miserably...so would I be better in making sushi candy?

Packaging

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-r2dANAtzYsU/VIXQtDkNDCI/AAAAAAAACcg/fC_rb7Q6n5U/s912/IMG_3127.JPG

The packaging is really cute! The front shows the sushi you can create and some cute mascots!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--lWf-C90SlQ/VIXQtFX4h5I/AAAAAAAACck/LeC6jsgxzFw/s800/IMG_3128.JPG

The back are actually the instructions of how to make it. My Japanese is really bad, but the pictures are very clear on how everything works.

What's inside?

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RVXzNpDFaGA/VIYELZ1zNyI/AAAAAAAACfI/X3tGDHb7WSg/s720/IMG_3139.JPG

After the unboxing I saw that all the parts were in a plastic wrapper, this one I cut open...

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-NtuWBCIzwnw/VIYEMzcI03I/AAAAAAAACdw/ueNdZc48ueM/s1440/IMG_3142.JPG

...and it reveals these "dining plates" for the creations that you are about to make! It also shows more instructions and size layouts.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-0to1qdJRjq4/VIYELEpZe5I/AAAAAAAACdg/Lo-kJgzO7Vc/s800/IMG_3140.JPG

Inside you are greeted by a huge amount of small parts. It are 6 different packages with powder, one small block (that represents the seaweed), a square spoon and a pipette.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BTKKT92VaiQ/VIYELsKWNpI/AAAAAAAACdo/1WXV77Xbwl4/s800/IMG_3141.JPG

The set also comes with this plastic tray that shows the measurements of the amount of water that you need to put in and has small "workstations" for each part.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-qFtGUWtzpcs/VIYENS1zk_I/AAAAAAAACec/Mf2Z3UjpMMo/s720/IMG_3143.JPG

I started off with the part of the rice...

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-xJfqvWyC0VM/VIYENWjZitI/AAAAAAAACeA/k5-EScC89TY/s720/IMG_3144.JPG

...and I screwed up. I thought it felt too stiff, so I added some more water and then I accidentally added way too much so the rice was now one big puddle of goo. I tried to remove the superfluous water as much as I could, but it was already too late. The fake rice couldn't be saved anymore.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-y_g3MmgcEjw/VIYENpw3tKI/AAAAAAAACeI/1IZt2dHUvIU/s720/IMG_3145.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--NP1skW8_hc/VIYEOe2W7UI/AAAAAAAACeU/EBLf_GXLTPU/s912/IMG_3146.JPG

The fake omelette and fake tuna were going well so far. Both of them where pretty liquid, but the instructions let me know that they needed to "dry" for a while so it would get a more jello-like structure.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gRylo2ujYoY/VIYEOgm69qI/AAAAAAAACeY/JjitCDytwPM/s720/IMG_3147.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-U8Xjm_3hnXk/VIYEPGgo0pI/AAAAAAAACeg/4RYVm87H_z0/s720/IMG_3148.JPG

Now, this part was the most fun! The ikura is made by putting a bit of the lemonade-like liquid from the bottom part in your pippette and then carefully let drops fall out in the part with water. View spoilerHide spoilerPlease ignore that I accidentally dripped some of the lemonade in the omelette. :P

Putting everything together!

With all the seperate parts being finished, it was time to make it look like sushi!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KRECdogLY5k/VIYEQCNIQZI/AAAAAAAACeo/kaU-Q51w2RM/s912/IMG_3149.JPG

I was already afraid of the rice looking like a hot mess and I was right. Luckily the omelette- and tuna-jello turned out fine!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-92TGF2mbof0/VIYEQ4tD1xI/AAAAAAAACe0/Fdb-eg06V7Q/s912/IMG_3150.JPG

The patterns in the tuna and omelette really stand out on the small candy!

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-NWjEVdH-EEU/VIYERGwZeiI/AAAAAAAACe4/aJ6vOVhiKkk/s720/IMG_3153.JPG

The ikura was pretty hard to make, because the fake seaweed (no idea what type of candy/material that was) was really hard to bend!

The set also came with a package of seasoning and when I tried to open it...

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-9pFmAohFSmo/VIYERt_x6JI/AAAAAAAACfA/fx7ZSR_UmpM/s1152/IMG_3155.JPG

...it completely exploded making my desk and all the sushi messy. This just wasn't my lucky day I guess. What was interesting about the seasoning is when it got wet, it slowly changed to a more liquid structure. I think it's supposed to look like soy-sauce, looking at the packaging. On the sushi that is most on the right you can see the "soy sauce effect" the best. I think the more wet the sushi is, the better it looks like soy sauce.

Time to taste!

Of course these candies needed to be tasted! So I took a bite off the first one (the tamago/omelette sushi) and my exact reaction was:

http://i3.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/685/864/249.jpg

It was horrible, absolutely horrible. The fake rice was immensely sweet, it hurt my teeth. The jello top didn't have any taste at all. Even if I didn't screw up the structure of the rice, it would have tasted the same.

After that I tried the ikura and I wasn't sure how to feel. The fake seaweed was really tough to chew and it stuck to my teeth really bad. The ikura itself was pretty good, though! The taste of it reminded me of the fruity bubbles you get in bubble tea. The outside was squishy and the inside was like lemonade! This was really the only part from this set that tasted good!

The seasoning that was on top of it all had a strange taste too, personally I expected it to be a bit sweet-and-sour, but it was more bittersweet. I didn't like it that much, but it wasn't that bad. If I could do it over again, I probably wouldn't have put it on my sushi View spoilerHide spoileror let it explode over my desk.

Conclusion

The set was really fun to make, but most of the flavors were horrible. I would recommend this set if you're up to some fun and being creative with candy/food, but I wouldn't buy this just for taste. I think there are DIY-sets out there that taste better than this one.

Thank you for reading this review and I hope you enjoyed! Next up will be another small, likewise food review, this time from the Crayon Shin Chan Fake Beer Namaiki (Cheeky) Drink!

I hope you guys are looking forward to it! :)

VioFitz (2 years ago) #2611170Both... I like sushi but, not in this one lol... The fake rice, omelette, & tuna looks grossed. I lost my appetite when I see this for the 1st time.

Haha the omelette and tuna looked too much like jelly/candy! The rice is my own fault, because I screwed up, haha!

Kuuga (2 years ago) #2614626you really make me want to buy these items

I would recommend the Shin Chan cup more, but this one is also nice! :D

Dr_Oru (2 years ago) #2584678Doesn't taste like candy at all! Most stuff, except the octo bits, taste like real sauces and condiments. After you heat it up a little in the microwave it tastes quite nice. Definitely a more realistic approach, you should definitely try it! :>

Oh, nice nice! I'll be getting one of those with my next order! ^w^

xueren (2 years ago) #2585891Hahaha! Oh dear! It actually still looks quite good even though you screwed up! This is one of the few things I'd want to try making but would never want in my mouth. My friends bought a box for their project last year and I got a little taste and it definitely wasn't pleasant. The Ikura looks really cool though.

T-t-thanks! It's fun to try this set out, even if it ends up in the trash because it tastes so horrible. xD

The ikura was both in taste and in the way it was made, defenitely the most interesting from this set! :)

VioFitz (2 years ago) #2591830UGH... I can't believe what I'm seeing though... Nice food review anyway. :D

I haven't tried the Takoyaki set, but I've seen it for sale! :D Is that one also sweet candy or does it taste like the real thing? ^^

But oh, man that sucks. I've heard a few other people who hated the taste too, for the same reasons you said. Disgustingly sweet is a real thing!
At least you had fun making it and they turned out looking nice~ Thanks for sharing and being bold enduring the taste.

And from what I actually just read a few minutes ago on another site is that it's supposed to have no sweeteners? But...how? :P

Y-y-you think they look nice? Thanks! I think I pretty much screwed up, especially with the rice and the mess the soy sauce powder made. :P And no problem! ^^

victorviper (2 years ago) #2582712It's too bad the finished product was borderline inedible, as it looks like the items were fun to assemble.

It was a huge fun to assemble everything! Considering these sell on average for 300-500 yen, they're worth it for an evening of fun! And you can try a small taste of it...if you dare. :P

dymitr (2 years ago) #2582716Maybe you should try making real sushi again. It can't get any worse than this fiasco ;)
Who knows you might actually nail it this time =3

Haha, maybe making this set trained me for the real deal! :P When I made real sushi the main problem I had was with the sticky rice sticking to my hands everything in the kitchen, instead of sticking to each other. :P

helloredpanda (2 years ago) #2582736I have no real issues with the tastes of this one (I actually like the "nori" since it's just sticky grape flavored candy iirc) as much as the textures
Having it in my mouth literally made me gag

Ohhhh, so it was grape flavored! I really couldn't place the taste and was just munching on it while having a frown on my face. :P

I was almost gagging with the rice, but mine was also very gooey, because I added too much water. :P

Katto (2 years ago) #2582746My partner's brother said the exact same thing about the taste when he made this set! I believe most of the Popin' Cookin' sets are like this unfortunately. I recommend trying Happy Kitchen if you like these kinds of kits! I tried the donut set which was awesome, not to sweet and everything worked and then I tried the burger and fries set and freaked the hell out over the fact that they managed to match the taste as well as they did...

Ah yes, I bought a few sets from Happy Kitchen! I didn't have time to try them out yet, but they were recommend to me by a friend (especially the pizza and hamburger ones). :)

Naelyth (2 years ago) #2582811Honestly I was shocked by how many people DIDN'T like it! I do have a major sweet tooth though, so that's probably why tehehe.
This is the only kit I've ever made by them, so if you ever get any others please review them! :D Your reviews/articles in general are always so entertaining to read!

Hrmm, I think it also depends on where people come from. Maybe in Japan they are more used to or like sweet things more? Because I guess it's popular there, otherwise they wouldn't keep n producing it? :P

Well, I don't have anymore from Popin' Cookin', but in the future I will review some from Happy Kitchen (a likewise brand)! ^^

And aww, thank you! ^w^

Yavimaya (2 years ago) #2582873ohhh I have war flashbacks because of this set. I bought it once to make with my friend. she took a pic of me before I tried it - I was all happy, and she took one after I tasted it - I think my face was similar to your "absolutely disgusting" pic. hilarious. I think you were supposed to add watter to that "soy souce powder" and then pour it on the sushi? or something. whatever, it wouldn't have changed the fact that it tasted super bad lmao
I remember we ruined the jellies and they were all watery even if we let it "dry" for some time. meh. I think the worst thing about this set is the rice :x the structure of it is disgusting, the taste is even worse. but I do admit that preparing it was fun! (super fun when I spilled water all over my desk)
I also bought the donut set, it was definitely better but the 'structure' of this candy is just not for me, chewing it almost makes me throw up.
I think there is also a set that doesn't taste sweet but is supposed to taste like the real food it resembles? (can't remember which set it was) I'm quite tempted to buy it but I'm afraid it'll be a waste of money again lol

The only thing I could think of when you said that was: View spoilerHide spoiler
http://www.gifbin.com/bin/052009/1243594993_cupcakedog-war-flashbacks.gif

And ooooooooooooooooooooooh, maybe that's why it tasted so weird. I couldn't find anything on the back side about that soy powder, and because it smelled a bit sweet and had a sugary structure, I expected it to be edible right away. The only thing is...even if I did find out on time, the package was completely wasted on my desk, lol.

The jellies took a really long time with me, but I'm not that sure about how much...I guess 20 mins or something?

And that last part you're talking about is Happy Kitchen! I will make and review a few of those in the future! :)

FreezerBurn (2 years ago) #2582908Great review, had me laughing at some parts lol.

It seems like multiple people found it funny while that was not exactly my intention (except for the otter). :P

redxmaverick (2 years ago) #2582918The rice candy looks so weird.
I laughed at your seasoning everywhere on the table because I thought you did it on purpose to give it that chef's touch but went "awww" after I read the bag exploded when you tried to open it.

Ehm yeah, but I accidentally added too much water so ehmm...it's actually not supposed to look like that. xD

Oh man, I just shouldn't have said that it was an accident, then people would have thought it was artistic or something! xD

Dr_Oru (2 years ago) #2583670Your image reaction was pretty spot on. I had both these at Christmas week and they tasted pretty poopy ;; The beer was like soap-y water.
Have you tried the Popin Cookin Kuru Kuru Takoyaki set yet? That one was probably one of the better flavoured for me so far :>

I knew it was worth it to save that image somewhere on my computer! 8B

I tried the fake beer in the meantime (will try to upload the blog later this week!), and to me it tasted like this very sugary traditional Dutch candy. Still burned away my teeth, though. :P

I haven't tried the Takoyaki set, but I've seen it for sale! :D Is that one also sweet candy or does it taste like the real thing? ^^

allenia (2 years ago) #2583974This is the few reviews that actually disliked it! I was so happy to find someone that shared the same view on the taste!
It was fun while it lasted tho. Hahaha.

Well, I didn't dislike the set, but the taste...lol. I had an evening of fun and it was worth it's price! ^^
