"What're you looking at, punk?!"

Hello MFC! I'm back with my second review and this time I will be taking a look at Real Action Heroes #696 - Ryuko Matoi from Kill La Kill! She's actually my first RAH so this was a new experience for me and I was excited when she finally arrived. I actually meant to write this review a little while back, but I got so darn busy I just wasn't able to! But here it is and I hope you find it to be very informative.

As I've never reviewed a poseable figure before, I am going to try and be as thorough as possible with my review. I will take into account her poseablity and other factors that may come as a result of her being a "doll" of sorts.

Warning: This review is very picture heavy and may contain some slightly NSFW pictures. The picture quality is not very superb either, so I apologize in advance for any blurriness.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

First things first: The box is pretty large, which is not unusual for RAH's since they are 1/6th scale. On the front is a standard closeup of Ryuko as well as text for "Kill La Kill" and "Real Action Heroes". The sides of the box are pretty similar, featuring another pose for Ryuko in which she is wearing her shouting face and wielding her Scissor Blade. The back of the box is yet another closeup with Ryuko in a third pose, along with some more Japanese text.

The inside of the box features a cutout window on the right that displays Ryuko and her accessories in all of their glory! The left panel is just a collage of pictures of Ryuko's various poses and expressions. The flap is magnetized via a little magnet glued inside of the packaging so it will stay closed without trouble.

Packaging: 8/10 - While the box is pretty typical of a RAH and rather large, it gets the job done. It features a plethora of pictures showcasing the many ways in which Ryuko can be posed. The magnetized flap is a nice touch as it allows for easy opening and closing of the front section.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Next up: the stand. I'm not going to lie... I'm not a fan of these RAH stands. It comes in 3 pieces and it's not hard to put together, but it feels very flimsy and cheap. It's not a very interesting stand either: it's just a clear plastic arm and base. It gets the job done, though.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Yuinna1426402207.jpeg

Base: 7/10 - The base is not the most awful thing in the world, but it wears an uninspired clear plastic design and feels like it could break if not handled properly. It seems to hold Ryuko in place, though, so it appears to be reliable.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ryuko comes with a fair amount of accessories, including: hands, eyes, face plates, her Scissor Blade, and her large carrying case.

View spoilerHide spoiler
Including her default fists, Ryuko comes with 4 pairs of hands: balled fists, spread palms, slightly curled, and grasping. The great thing about the hands is that they are very easy to change out. You simply pull the hands out of the wrist hole and plug in a different pair! I found this to be to my liking simply because I changed her hands a lot during the course of this review and I know it would be the one thing I may change a lot in general when putting her into various poses on my shelf. You can mix and match the hands as well.

View spoilerHide spoilerRyuko also comes with 3 different face plates and 3 different pairs of eyes. Alone, there doesn't appear to be much difference in the eyes, but once they are set into any of the face plates, the difference becomes much clearer. As for the faces, she can rock the default smile, a pouty blush, or a shouting expression. There isn't as much variation in the eyes as Ryuko only has a choice of looking forward, to the left, or to the right.

Oddly enough, one of the pairs of eyes got stuck in one of the face plates! I had to apply a little pressure to get it in and apply even more pressure when attempting to pull it out. A minor annoyance aside, the eyes are pretty easy to swap out on the go.

The other accessories such as Ryuko's Scissor Blade and carrying case are pretty well sculpted. The Scissor Blade has a nice metallic red paint applied to it and is fairly large in size. The carrying case is a matte gray with the appropriate graphics applied all over it. Ryuko can wear it on her back via a strap.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Yuinna1426401901.jpeg

The Scissor Blade does not come apart. You need to slip it into one of her grasping hands by fitting the thinnest part of the hilt between her fingers. Then, you can maneuver it however you need in order to fully slip it into her grasp. I kind of wish it just came apart, but in all honesty, I didn't have trouble getting it into her hand.

Now, let's look at Ryuko herself!

Let's giver 'er a little twirl, ey?

Cool! She can stand on her own, but I wouldn't suggest leaving her like that. The reason I love this specific Ryuko so much is because she's wearing her varsity jacket! I love her casual outfit so much - it just screams badassery (okay, not a word, but stay with me!) and attitude. The clothes are made pretty nicely.

Here are just a few closeup shots of the material her outfit is made from.

None of it feels cheap - it's really soft, works well, and is very pose-friendly! There's no pesky "leathery" plastic parts either like ITEM #198531 so there's no need to fear anything ripping or flaking when posing her.

And, of course, she is wearing her signature panties. Very cute. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Taking a closer peek at some of the details...

View spoilerHide spoiler
Personally, I really love her sculpt. I didn't notice any particular sculpting flaws or paint flaws. She's a much simpler Ryuko when compared to the complex and transformed Ms. Matoi, but she's beautiful nonetheless. Her red hair streak is a lovely and solid shade of red and the hair sculpt in general is just really awesome.

Sculpting: 10/10 - This version of Ryuko is simple, but the sculpt is executed very well with nary a flaw in sight. The clothes are sewn excellently as well and are very sturdy! The details on each of her face plates are super crisp and match well with the expressions she wears in the anime.

Painting: 10/10 - Again, I did not notice any flaws in her paint job. She's painted very well and each detail is crisp and clear to the eye.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ready... set... stretch!

View spoilerHide spoiler
She's pretty flexible! I tried to stretch her limbs within reason and as much as possible. She seems pretty fit to be posed in any sort of way you might have in mind. Again, her clothes aren't a hindrance, so there are a lot of possibilities here.

One of her arms did pop out of its socket when I turned it a certain way, but it popped back in with relative ease.

Posing: 9/10 - Ryuko seems to pose very well. Her clothes are not a problem and are very flexible. I had one of her arms pop out during the course of my review, but it was easy to pop back into its socket. The joints are not too loose, either, allowing for Ryuko to hold poses really well.

Finally, Ryuko posing!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Yuinna1426402552.jpeg
Hint: if you want to stuff Ryuko's hands fully into her jacket's pockets, you need to detach both of her hands and stuff the stumps inside! Otherwise, they will not fit.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

That does it for this review! I hope you've enjoyed reading it and have found it to be informative. In conclusion, I love this version of RAH Ryuko. I don't usually buy RAH's (due to how expensive and large they are), but this one in particular was worth every penny. The fact that this one also features Ryuko in her varsity jacket makes it even better. This might be the only RAH I purchase, but I have no regrets. I love her!

Enjoyment: 10/10 - This RAH Ryuko Matoi is something special and looks great in every aspect. Absolutely worth the money!

I love this Ryuko, I caved and bought her when medicom had her for sale and there was a bonus 3000Y shipping coupon. I don't usually pay so much for RAHs (usually aim for $90-150, but she was just a bit more than that so...) and even though I haven't opened her yet, I can tell she's just perfect. Her sculpt is wonderful from hair to toe and I can tell they took the sourse art into heavy consideration. LOVE the blushing face, which is what put me over the edge with her. Looking forward to untransformed Senketsu RAH too!! Too bad this RAH was a WF exclusive, I saw Mandarake list one today for 40,000Y, ridiculous. Enjoy her!!!

Also, just to mention it, if this is your first RAH sometimes they come with a paper that shows how their joints are and how to navigate them (RAH Link did). If not, I'm sure you could look up the resource online (or if you can't, PM me and I'll take a picture of mine for you). It is important not to force the joints too much because they can break, many times since RAH are so posable I find if you twist the arm and shoulder blade certain ways, you need to move the joint back to starting to pose it another way in a different direction.

StephieHerbert (3 years ago) #2817871Very awesome review! The RAHs tempt me so much! I'm just afraid if I get one, I'll end up with an army of them and no money! She looks really nice. I wish the figma had been in the school uniform.
Thank you! It would be absolutely fantastic if they made a Figma version of Ryuko in her varsity jacket. <3

Rinnzlerr (3 years ago) #2818052Nice review! I've been eye balling the Senketsu version of her but have been holding off. I have an AmiAmi order coming in and depending on if there's any last minute delays I might pick her up soon. I am a fan of the school uniform though :D
Thanks! Ryuko looks good in every outfit! (;

a short question, have u ever tried posing her like in the cover box (hands in pocket). if you have, I just want to make sure that you need remove her hands in order for the arms to fit in the pocket right?

Unfortunately, I haven't tried posing her in the box.

As far as I can tell, though, yes you need to fully remove both hands so they will fit in the pockets. I tried for a good 10 minutes to fit her hands into the pockets of the jacket until I suddenly realized - derp - you have to remove them. Or, an alternative is to nestle her thumbs in the pockets like I've done in one of the pictures. (:

M-Linfa (3 years ago) #2817263She doesn t look like she has that awful seam line like on the side of the other ryuuko RAH s leg, I m desperately looking for a rah that can have her clothes taken off to change them, but I ve heard that some have their clothes sewn on, so is this one completely cast offable? what about her shoes ?

I didn't try to fully undress her (this is something I'd have to go back and look into), but I did have to remove her jacket and open her shirt to fit her arm back into its socket. As for the shoes - no, they don't come off. ):

ZoidsFanatic (3 years ago) #2817274Neat review. The RAH line has always appealed to my interest. Sadly the price and the fact my 1/6 G.I. Joes are not ones to like outsiders I may have to avoid them for the time being.
Great review!

Thank you! ^^
