Detolf Update & LightingDetolf Update & LightingDiary

This past weekend/last night I was able to update my Detolf setup for my anime figs :D. I added a second, Detolf will custom lighting, as well as redone lighting on my first Detolf.

Before: Samurai Girls Detolf! Another will be joining these ladies once my March AmiAmi order gets in.

Okay, now that we got the before out of the way I want to mention that the LED lighting I used on the first was really cheap and half the time the colors were all haywire/off. Meaning one side might be blue while the other is white like it was supposed to be. I'm a perfectionist at heart so something like that would drive me nuts... Which it did. Upon getting my second set of LED strips for my second Detolf I noticed that where I buy them from changed the strip layout and they seemed better quality as well. I immediately ordered another set so I could redo my first display and I'm glad I did, they look a thousand times better and work with out any issues. I have also developed a method to my madness so that could be part of it as well lol.

*I'm still working on getting a good camera* lol so sorry.

My "mostly wireless" lighting was done using aluminum mounting channels, with a white washed covering. (pictured below). These channels run up each side of the Detolf facing inward, sitting behind the metal bracket of the case it's self. The wiring here is just a standard connector I got of of Amazon for LED strips. They get the job done, I didn't roll them, not wanting to put too much strain on the strips. I found having them sit like this was the least resistant. I know you can't really see it in this picture but, the covering on the top channel is cut longer. The cover helps hold the LED connectors on the top flat and in line. Works quite well actually, I was happy with the out come.

On the opening side of the Detolf I installed a foam weather strip. This runs from top to bottom and is applied directly to the side glass on the inside. Having it line up just a bit in from the edge of the glass works perfectly. This helps keep any dust levels down as well as a tight fit when door is closed. (as it should be lol).

This is just a quick update, I really want to to a full on tutorial at some point on how to do the lighting. I think from start to finish could really help fellow collectors out who are looking to light their Detolfs. As for price per Detolf on the lighting it runs about $90-ish. Not to bad for a full colored, "mostly wireless" solution that looks pretty damn good!

BlackUsagi20135 years ago#2838627I need all the help I can get. I'm clueless. I bought a light as a "tester" to see if I'd like it.
I like the lighting but not the light itself.
Whatever advice you wanna give, I'll use. It won't be "wasted" =)
I asked a friend of mine for advice but he said "it'll be wasted on you"
Bummed me out. He knows I'll use it, think he was just being a jerk.
He never wants to help me but I'm expected too.....

It's all good, I always have some good advice to offer. Best advice for detolf lighting, stick with LEDs (strips), not spotlights or anything like that. I've seen a few spotlight setups that aren't to bad but they don't hold a candle to the LEDs. I'll make sure my tutorial is really easy to follow for everyone as well. I want fellow MFC-ers to feel comfortable in making there own lighting and hopefully not have any issues with them.

It will be the best damn tutorial out there! My creative brain is fired up over here haha

Rinnzlerr5 years ago#2837520Thanks!! I'm pretty pumped for ITEM #190595, though she got delayed again. As long as Alter is flawless and makes her perfect I'm ok with that :)

Tiamat265 years ago#2837265Well lets hope you do a DIY on those lights at some point.
And yes Samurai girls for the win.. in your case... In mine, its

Rosario + Vampire

Niiice, I wouldn't mind some Sekirei figures, mainly Kazehana and her sake, and of course Musubi. Unfortunately there's not much for Sekirei figure wise, at least from the manufacturers I'd go for. Plus the long lost season three that'll most likely never happen plays into no new figures in the future -__-

hmmm that goes to show you just how much I folowed the Samurai bride collection. Maybe if I would have started to collect earlier and I would have the rest of the series compared to what I have now I may have said oh look a new figurine. but I missed the pre-order for her and I doupt thta she will be high on my priority list.
