Shinji’s Super Special Summary
A 1st of April Figure Review special!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427984596.jpeg

I know i am a day late with this, but better late then never.

To Celebrate Neon Genesis Evangelion’s 20th Anniversary this year I will be reviewing a Shinji Ikari Figure. For the record I try and post a review for laughs every April the 1st so don’t take this too serious. However it the figure in all seriousness is assessed against this guide. blog/2410&b...

Since I am short on time Anyway I hope everyone knows what Neon Genesis and who Shinji Ikari is. In Summary is pilot of Evangelion Unit 1, for ever is trying to earn his father’s approval & seems to attract other Evangelion pilots. Interestingly compared to his peers he hasn’t been popular enough to score a scale pre-painted figure. ITEM #1153 you say? Well one where he wearing his plug suit which is the important one. So I would be reviewing this figure is Shinji as he appears in the 3rd of the Rebuild Evangelion Movie, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo.

Disclosure: This review has been written for a laugh in a satirical kind of way since it is April the 1st so it pokes fun at anything and everything if you feel strongly about crude humour, the character, the figure or figure collecting in general you may be offended if you read on however I hope that you aren’t. For the record I have been pretty successful with meeting 3 out of 4 years.

Disclosure 2: Kind of Spoilers from the first 3 of the Re-build of Evangelion movies so if you intend to watch and haven’t intend to watch and haven’t read at your own risk

Shinji Ikari has finally been captured in form as a Sega PM figure, which means that it is around the size of a 1/8 figures. He was made available over the internet for about 1500 yen in December of 2013. Otherwise you just needed skill to win him in the arcades in Japan. Surprisingly this was just over one year after the movie was released in Japan. And exactly one day after Christmas so he couldn’t be given as a present to anyone. Now unlike half of the figures produced by Sega the sculpting of this Shinji has been credited to one Kana search.php?arti....

Here is where Shinji is rotated 360 degrees, which would be most pleasant for your eyes!

As you can see would expect with Shinji been a Cheap Prize figure he comes with no accessories. However one which would have been a blast is if they added an equitable collar.

Pose: 10/10

I really love the pose of this figure as to me it truly expresses personality /mind set which he holds for most of the series/movies. This is a mindset of uncertainty with oneself which is seeking the assurance of acceptance from everyone above all else. This is seen as the figure is cautiously extended his left hand seeking to greet someone. However his body langue says to me that he is also preparing for the worst case scenario, rejection, and is poised to instantly retract his hand as if nothing happed in case this scenario is fitted. Why does he reach out with his left hand as aren’t supposed to shake with your right?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427984713.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427984596.jpeg

In his Right hand he holds his trusty S-Dat player if this would have further meaning who knows? I mean it must be very important as it survived 3rd impact and more importantly thrown against the wall after a tantrum. With what I believed was a total rewrite of the initial script for the 3rd Evangelion Movie we will see if the S-Dat becomes truly important.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427984602.jpeg

Other than this Shinji is looking like he is trying to do the right thing by his self-confidence. He is standing up tall and straight and trying to although his feet are at different levels and is genuinely trying to look you in the eye, not as a special Evanglion pilot but as equals. If a Scale figure of him ever gets made I hope it uses a similar pose.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427985206.jpeg

Sculpt: 6/10

Unfortunately if I did like the pose of this figure its Sculpting has let I down

The Good:

His body has the right proportions so as not to make his pose unnatural. And the skin tightness of the body suit is well emphasized here. Special attention is drawn to how the sculpting emphasises his long legs and buttocks. I will refuse to comment around his crotch area but it seems to be inline the movie.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427984600.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427984598.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427984604.jpeg

The sculpting of Shinji’s face, which is wearing a smiling yet worried expression, is accurate to his depiction of in the movie to me so that is good.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427984717.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427984715.jpeg

This Kinda Good and Kinda Bad:

The Detail on his suit could have used more defined edges imo. However it might just be the paint this scores a pass.

The Bad & Ugly:

Seamlines ahoy! Shinji has many seamlines and it is quite distracting. Starting with his head still has the stereotypical one on his head but behind it he also has excess flash seam line which where it hasn’t been sanded down properly after the head is snapped out of its mold. This flash then extends right through Shinji starting at his shoulders then running down his arms, sides and legs. This really detracts from the smoothness and seamless effect of a plug suit.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983569.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983565.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983571.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983567.jpeg

Now for his scale which is now where I am going to rant. From Head to base Shinji is 23.5 cm tall while toe to head is 21.5cm. This puts him 2 centimetres above where I would expect him as a 15 year old to be if he was 1/8 Scale but it is liveable. Now SEGA has been pumping out PM Figures, with the majority was Evangelion, since 2012. My gripe with this whole series of these is that that they can’t even get ones from the same series to match one another in height. Since Shinji isn’t popular using Rei as an example you have Rei’s varying in height from 24 cm to 20 cm all under the PM figure line. The question which would I ask of Sega is wouldn’t it have been too hard at the start to say this is Rei Asuka and Shinji, when you make a PM Figure of them you make it 19 cm tall so they are in scale to 1/8 the most popular scale. Not hard, and unless a character is exceptionally tall or short or is an adult this could be applied across their whole PM figure range.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983766.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983733.jpeg
I was going to include a PM figure of Rei here who they are not in scale with, at least they are in scale with Malibu Asuka.

Painting: 5/10

Now Shinji has been riding on high for the first part of the review. Unfortunately it is time to demolish that now as he is now judged on the same painting standards as normal scale figures 5 times more expensive then him.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427984232.jpeg

From afar Shinji’s painting scheme of his Unit 13 plug suit as that is all which is covering his body is a good reflection of the movie. If anything they could have been done in a slightly brighter tone of paint. The decals on his face and the painting of his hair are pretty well.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427984236.jpeg

Poor Shinji is covered in Red Circles of paint defects

On closer inspection it becomes apparent that he is well and a 1500 yen prize figure. There is paint transfer all on the plug suit especially around the areas of complex details. The paint appears to be overly thickly and with many air bubbles. Even when it is not a complex area, ie his hair there seems to be sloppy paint splotches and ir bubbles, this is especially present around his head seamline, which instead of filling in the gap instead seem to emphasis it and how sloppy the paint QC is. This close inspection really detracts from the skin tight feel and seamless nature of the plug suit and I think really hurts the figure as a whole. Sorry Shinji but your only a prize figure playing in a Scale figure world.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427984234.jpeg

Just to add icing on the cake they use stickers for decaling on the hand part of his plug suits. I can honestly say I have never seen something like that done before.

Package: 6/10

Shinji’s box is what you would expect from a Sega Prize figure. To cut down on production costs it doesn’t have a window where you can look into to see the figure. You would just have to take Sega’s word for by viewing the single photo of the immaculate prototype of him provided on only one of the sides of the box and your final product would be the same. Other sides of the box have 2 futuristic Nerve logo, a Seele logo and a disclaimer on top of the funky deep red back ground pattern.

Inside he is protected by plastic blisters and plastic wrapping to avoid paint transfer. To test out the effectiveness I put Shinji into my checked in luggage on a plane flight and he came out without a scratch although his box and blisters were distorted since they are doing their job.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427982851.jpeg

He comes with no windows for him to look out of so

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427982724.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427982849.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427982728.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427982726.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427982732.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427982730.jpeg

In contrast to his slender figure Shinji’s box is fairly large what I think a modern day prize figure is supposed to come in.
Weight: 307 g
Height: 29 cm
Width: 14.5 cm
Depth: 16 cm

Base: 8/10

Well Shinji’s base is certainly quite complex for a prize figure and even trumps some scale figures *Cough* Griffon *Cough*, who have given me low expectations of the base. It is a plastic square, with what appears to be ruins which Shinji is standing on. They avoid having to paint the detail of the ruin by painting everything dark red, why red well it must be to remind Shinji of his past screw up’s. As part of the base he will definitely fall over as the soles of his feet are glued to the ruins which In turn are screwed into the base.

Enjoyment: 9/10

Overall I am quite really happy that now there is an accurate to character and easily accessible figure of the not so quintessential Shinji to add to my 1/8 figure collection.

However the real enjoyment is felt by posing him with his co-pilot of Evangelion unit 13 and best buddy ever Kaworu. Who was released in as a matching figure at the same time and simular price. Well I take back that statement. Kaworu had a figure released for the second film and then had his plug suit changed to that of Evangelion unit 13’s and to be rereleased with Shinji who was also in the same plug suit.

I really like how Kaworu’s body language of total confidence is contrasted against Shinji’s who is much less sure of himself when posed together. Just like in the 3rd movie you could say that Kaworu was just showing him the way. Also being next to a guy who can breathe in space must do that to a guy.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983049.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983051.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983099.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983053.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983055.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983101.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983103.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983105.jpeg

Now using a riser to adjust them at different heights fun and exploration can truly begin.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Sazako1427983047.jpeg

I will leave the rest to your imagination.

Overall

Shinji receives 7.3 overall and 7.5 for the average of the important categories of Pose, Sculpt, Paint Job and Enjoyment. Well I am pretty happy to give him a home in my collection where he can mingle with my other figures in his plug suit…. As long as he is positioned in a hard to place so you only look at him from a distance. But for the love of a loving father wouldn’t it be too hard to ask if he could have a scale figure many of the stupid things which detracted from this figure’s overall appearance of this figure could be fixed in the 20th anniversary year of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Maakie (3 years ago) #2860004Oh man, the seam on his head! But everything else is really nice, especially considering his prize, so still worth it imo! :) Nice review ^^

Thanks Maakie, Yeah that seam is bad I position Shinji on the top of my Deltof so I don't have to look down on it.

Glitchymoo (3 years ago) #2859345Nice review ^.^
I lol'd at the pic where Shinji is atop the books.
Also nice commentary~~

Thanks Glitchy. Haha I had more of those book shots but somehow decided against using them or I thought the review may have gone a bit too far.

Jumblebelle (3 years ago) #2858296I love this Kawoshin prize fig set, it's supper cute that you can join their hands. ^o^
Mine's hair seam isn't nearly as bad as your's and the paintwork's a bit better. Everything else I'm fine with from a prize fig.

Glad to hear yours turned out good. I must have just got the Unlucky Shinji.....

allenia (3 years ago) #2858295i would love to get an shinji figure. but only if it can be paired with kaowru.
after what bij did to the prize figure, i doubt it

I would like that too. With all the scale figures of Kawrou all ready released I would hope to find one which matches Shinji.

meowcenarie (3 years ago) #2858109I love reading your April 1st reviews, they're so fun. (honestly surprised no Gundam Seed jokes were made like on your first one since Gundam Seed is such a joke). Having more figures of Shinji would be nice tbh.

Thank you so much Meowcenarie, It means a lot. I had fun writing it as well. I will endeavour to go full circle next year and put in a Gundam Seed joke.

ChunChun (3 years ago) #2858022I also own this Shinji figure and I have to say that I agree with most of your commentary,
although mine does not have such bad seamlines and paint job.
To be honest, I think he's pretty cute and I love my Shinji figure, but I do agree with you, I would love to have a proper Shinji scale figure.

Thanks Im glad that you aggree on the commentary and glad that we aggree that Shinji needs a scale figure.

Ose_93 (3 years ago) #2857821I really would love to have a nice, scale figure set of both Shinji and Kaworu... The plugsuit would be nice, but I wouldn't mind the school outfit either. So long as his face suits him and the figure is well done, I would be happy.

Yep thats right, if you make him with an off looking face no one would by his figure....... I am glad his face did suit him on this figure.

MarionEtx (3 years ago) #2857637Haha what a great way tot start the morning; that was a fun read! All I can think of when I see the base is chocolate bars.

Haha Glad to make your morning enjoyable. Chocolate bars hahaha!

Moro (3 years ago) #2857442*snort* Nice commentary.
I have this figure and I think you just got a bit unlucky as yours does seem to have a lot of paint spillage and a particularly messy head seam, mine isn't nearly this bad.
Though for paint problems on prize figures, I just fix them myself with acrylic paint.
I'd love a proper scale of Shinji (from Kotobukiya, their Eva figures are great and they already made Kaworu and did make a Shinji in the past.) Prefer plugsuit, of course (more iconic, more interesting, and more delicious, skintight outfits are irresistable.)

Thats a great idea fixing him with hobby paint I will do that. Yes Skin tight plugsuits are the way to go.. Koto are you listening to this?
