Suruga-Ya Loot - 2nd purchaseSuruga-Ya Loot - 2nd purchaseLoot

This is going to be LOOOOONG.

SAL came through for me exactly two weeks after shipment, haha. I did things a bit differently this time around, though. Wanted to test out different ways of ordering, so I had three shipments total. First one was a bulk order that I forwarded to Big in Japan and had re-packaged. Same as my first order. (mfc link)
Second order I forwarded to BiJ as well, but didn't ask for repackaging.
Third was a proxy purchase using Treasure Japan for a single Figma.

The package that arrived first:
Forwarder: Big In Japan
Purchase Cost: 8,240 Yen
Total Cost after shipping/service fees: 10,530 Yen = $87.93

I splurged … Managed to catch the mailman on my way out just as he was pulling up, and like before with Big in Japan the box was nice and compact, neat, and packaged well.

(Forgive the weird angle - I was too excited to wait until I got back home that I just opened it in the car.

For my second purchase with Suruga-Ya I got a mix of Natsume’s Book of Friends, Defense Club LOVE!!!, and Hetalia merchandise, as well as one or two items from other series and doujinshi.

All the loose keychains and smaller things were packed snug in its own large plastic bag, while the rest that had boxes + doujin and stationary sat at the bottom.

Like before every item had a sale sticker from Suru’s store, and thankfully the items that didn’t have wrapping were easy to remove and left no residue.

After getting home I unpacked everything. The merchandise loot:

First is all the Hetalia straps. I got a bit into collecting them after buying Russia on my first Suruga-Ya purchase /shame One even came with the box! Fun stuff. Also a One-Coin of Greece, and some bookmarks that I actually bought from a user on Livejournal, but they came on the same day so I figured I'd include them.

Next is Natsume's Book of Friends:
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/10/19/1396385.jpeg

Got some figures and keychains, the Natsume one already hanging on my phone. I'm always bummed when the cat gets all the glory of this series over the main character, so I wanted some official merchandise of Natsume because I love him. Natori went along for the ride because he was cheap, lol.
Some close-ups of the figures:

The rest was a mix of different series I enjoyed at the time they aired. Big fan of all of them and am bummed they aren't as popular (Mawaru Penguindrum being the exception because of Princess Crystal).

Poyo Poyo is the cat, although I couldn't find it in the database. Love the charm.
Princess Crystal charm is cute as well, and she was new! Opened, but the charm itself was still sealed in its plastic.

Atsushi has all my love so I had to get this squishy of him since I've always wanted one.

Also got a keychain but like ? ? I didn't realize it was SO BIG.

Can't imagine ever using this for practical reasons for fear of cracking it - happened to a bunch of shrinky dinks I made.

Also not pictured because I forgot about them - some Kimi to Boku bookmarks! Looove them, and the series.

Last but not least was some Hetalia doujinshi and a notepad:
View spoilerHide spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/10/19/1396390.jpegThe notepad was the best part, as it had really cute art inside.
And that concludes part 1!

The next day more packages came with the rest of the Suruga-Ya loot:

From Treasure Japan (TOP):
Purchase Cost: 2,980 Yen
Total cost after shipping/proxy fees: 5,065 Yen

From Big in Japan (BOTTOM):
Total cost of purchase: 2,360 Yen
Total cost after shipping/forwarding fee: 4,031 Yen

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/10/19/1396397.jpeg

I wanted to see the infamous Suruga-Ya packages since I've heard stories about overly large boxes, as well as how they pack things just in case I ever have to do a straight forward without repackaging in the future.

Honestly, this wasn't that bad? The box for the figure got a bit dented and the plastic has a rip, but the items were safe and sound. They were wrapped onto a piece of cardboard and glued to the top of the box. Opening it was a bit of a hassle, but it did well to protect it for overseas shipping.
Overall I'd say it's good for things like doujin and some small keychains. Definitely not bigger, expensive, nor fragile figures.

A comparison for anyone interested:
View spoilerHide spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/10/19/1396406.jpeg
The Suru box weighed around 12.7 oz.

On to the loot!

Treasure Japan packaged to perfection, although the peanuts left a mess after I was done getting the figure out.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/10/19/1396401.jpeg

My first Figma! Kuroneko from Oreimo. I already unpackaged her and will be doing a diary entry on her later.

Suru Loot (kind of NSFW?):

A mix of Hetalia doujinshi, bookmarks, plus clear files. I've never had clear files before and assumed they were folders, but they're similar to file folders except the bottom is sealed. Art = gorgeous. Not sure how I'm going to be using them, though. Still pretty to look at!

And finally was a gift for a friend who is a HUGE fan of Higurashi. Got him his favorite crazy girl, Rena. The lack of legitimately crazy figures for her is a sin, so I got the best (and cheapest) one I could find.

She was marked used so the original packaging inside the box was missing, but Suru packed it well that it made it through two weeks of international shipment.

I met my friend that day for a club thing so he got to put her together.

Kinda wanted to keep her

Again, a successful Suruga-Ya purchase!
Don't think I'll be using Treasure Japan in the future, though. Forwarding is so much cheaper. All those extra fees were not cost-effective for me.

Haha, I also have multiple keychains that turned out to be way bigger thane expected. I have no clue what to do with those except for hanging them in a display, because they're not good to use at all!

solluxcaptor4 years ago#4107835Very interesting to see the price comparisons, and your loot is lovely! May I ask which option out of these three you tested that you would recommend?Price is important to a cheapskate like me, haha. I always recommend forwarding, especially with Big in Japan. Their cost is 500 yen, and 500 more yen to repackage everything in case the box doesn't fit SAL.
It really depends on what you're buying, though.
For repacking I try to order multiple things. Suru is really good at getting me to buy something right after I made a purchase because my stock waiting list is erratic, and that works out for the repacking fee as it depletes the cost overall. For a couple of items, assuming they send a small enough box and the items aren't fragile, I recommend the straight forward if you trust your country's post office not to manhandle the box.

I've only used a proxy once so I'm not the best judge, but all those extra fees just don't work for me so I stick to forwarding so long as I can purchase items myself.Seiidaishougun4 years ago#4107840snip
Oh, lol. That must have seemed odd. I haven't watched the series in a while but I think the characters had to play stand-in for a show at some point, and that's why they dressed like that.

I won't deny Suru is notoriously slow, though. I'm very patient so it never bothers me, but it can see how it would be nerve racking to others having to wait 1 week for things to ship to a proxy. I've never had to deal with their customer service, thankfully.

VioMariner4 years ago#4107893snipHappy to help, and thank you! Can't deny the cat merch is really cute - it's why I bought some, lol. But Natsume definitely needs more love.

Awesome loot, and thanks for also giving a comparison of the different proxy service shipping and costs! Love the Penguindrum, Binan Koukou, and Natsume merch, especially Natsume himself haha. I agree with you, love Nyanko-sensei but the characters need more love. Best girl Kuroneko is always ♥ too~

You're a great friend, that Rena figure is gorgeous!

Yeah, I think I've spent over 300 dollars on there and it's only my second time. D: My doujinshi colllection doubled after the first purchase they're so cheap can you blame me? I buy exclusively in bulk and that probably doesn't help. The second I make one purchase, something on my waiting list goes in stock so there I go making another one. Rinse, repeat.

I want to try and forward other stuff as well but haven't figured out if I can yet. Trying for Animate's store but also want to save my wallet by avoiding making an account lol.

When it comes to bulk orders I definitely would go for the repackaging. This box in particular just happened to be late, so BiJ had already shipped out the rest and I didn't want to pay another 500 yen for some cheap, flat objects and - what I assumed at the time - a small figure. (Rena turned out bigger than I thought haha.) For EMS since you're already putting in extra cost (I ship SAL most of the time) it's definitely smarter to go with the repack.

Suruga-ya is a terrible thing to know how to use, if only because they make is super easy to find old/rare merch in almost perfect condition for cheap. *A* I'm exceptionally fond of them, since I grabbed ITEM #172302 , ITEM #95262 , and ITEM #99116 from them for ¥1k, ~¥600, and ¥2k respectively, and all three were major 'must haves' so I was elated to find them for so cheap in new/opened but not used/sealed condition.
So I've spent a pretty penny, grabbing misc straps from boxes I didn't want to split or old ones I missed the release for. Also doujins, they like my credit card so that's a thing I've done

I kind of regret learning how to forward because of Suru, tho. It was so painless and easy that I've since created accounts with a number of other sites that aren't as cheap.
I don't even bat an eye at the 'Exclusive' designation on straps, since I probably already have an account so it's just a couple clicks away. orz

EDIT: Also on the boxes, I've found that I'd rather pay the extra ¥500 to have them repack (partially because multiple shipments anyway) but mainly because I've rarely had a box they've packed full with paper get damaged, but the boxes from Suru have so much empty space that they've always sustained damage.
If I'm paying for ems shipping either way, I'd rather have at least have the paper for shipping other things instead of just air, haahaa........

LovelyIdiot4 years ago#4084485Awesome loot! I love the small POTC figure, best anime ever!
I feel like Suruga-ya's packaging can be a hit or miss, once ordered 5 thin ass doujinshi + 1 clear file and had them forwarded via BIJ without repacking. The box was so big it had to be EMSed and I was so confused as to why they needed to EMS 5 small books and a file? Turns out that Suru had just shrinkwrapped the books to the bottom of a huge ass box and shipped it off like that. I could even sit in the box.
Now I just have all my stuff proxied since I like ordering from Animate and Movic so I can ship them together.
Thank you!
I've heard the habit is more of using whatever box is available because domestically it doesn't matter, so generally how small of a thing you buy wont give you better chances of getting a small box.
My interest was more into seeing what the smallest box Suru probably sends out would cost as far as shipping, so if I ever get the OK from a forwarder about SAL i'll know what to expect for the shipping cost. I was going to have that purchase repacked as well until BiJ just went ahead and sent me the invoice for it, so I took the opportunity.

FatalReticence4 years ago#4084395Aah, thanks for the link! The post is very helpful, maybe I'll try ordering next time.
(Also, there's a bracket in the link so it leads to a 404 page but I deleted it and got to the blog post.)
No problem! Oh sorry about the link, i fixed it on the original post.
