Review: Nendoroid Kogitsunemaru!

Hi MFC! I decided to cross post a review I put on tumblr--I actually write figure reviews pretty often, I just never put them up here ^^; maybe i should get in the habit of posting here too; there's a way wider audience to reach here

I don't know if there's a set "style" for reviews; I usually just do my own thing haha.... But if you're here for the scoring system that most people seem to use, that'll be down at the bottom under all the pictures.

Anyway, today I'll be taking a look at
Nendoroid Kogitsunemaru!
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Magusfigures1449273559.jpeg
“Although I might be big, my name is Kogitsunemaru. No, I’m not joking. I’m certainly not a fake, either. I’m small! Even though I’m big!”

The wait is over! Kogits came home! He's actually my twelfth nendoroid; I never expected to own this many! They're so small, it's easy for them to pile up without you noticing...

Nendo Kogits actually has a bit of a story behind him, too. A friend of mine preordered him but ended up not wanting him a couple months later, and when she asked if anyone wanted to buy the preorder i put my name down. Even though I didn’t know jack about Touken Ranbu at the time, I rly liked Kogitsunemaru’s design (and hey, another prettyboy on my shelf, what could be bad?). Since going to Japan, getting Mikazuki and becoming slightly more knowledgeable about Touken Ranbu, I’m really glad I ended up snagging Kogits too. Mikazuki looked so lonely on my shelf!!

Anyway, on to what you're all here for: the review!

One thing I did notice right out of the box was that Kogits has a small ding on his bangs--you can see it in a lot of these pictures; it catches the light differently. Since it's such a small QC error, I'm not sure I mind all that much. It's easy enough to photoshop away.

Here's how he looks from the side! His fox-like hair has been carefully sculpted to look both fluffy and flowing! And unlike Mikazuki, Kogits’ sword attached to his side without any problem.

One thing I noticed immediately was that Kogits’ bangs are pointy–you could take your eye out with them! I haven’t had a figure with hair this pointy since figma Labrys, so it came as a bit of a surprise.

Two longer locks of hair–the ones that fall in front of his shoulders–are also made of a flexible pvc to allow for more freedom in posing, which also surprised me. I’m not used to nendoroids having flexible parts (where were you when Nendoroid Aoba needed a flexible hood?!?!) so it was a nice change of pace.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Magusfigures1449273563.jpeg
Closeup of the sword hilt–the little tassel is actually a separate part, so you can angle it however you want, or even detach it!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Magusfigures1449273567.jpeg
Interestingly, Kogitsunemaru has a completely different base from any nendoroid I’ve seen. You slip the inner pant legs of his hakama into the clear plastic part, which anchors him firmly to the stand. This way he didn’t have to have a hole in his hair, nor did you have to maneuver a stand arm under his hair like with N (ITEM #327207). I was a little wary at first considering how bad Masamune (ITEM #13758) and Yukimura’s (ITEM #13757) stands were, but this stand actually didn’t give me any trouble at all! It was quite a relief.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Magusfigures1449273565.jpeg
From the back! Extra care was taken to give Kogits’ hair the appearance of layering. Also, the tiny ponytail at the bottom has a small joint, so you can angle it different ways.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Magusfigures1449273754.jpeg
Here’s what he came with! Two extra faces, several different arms, a drawn sword, and Konnosuke! Interestingly, the drawn sword also came with a removable tassel. I wonder why they felt the need to include more than one?

Konnosuke is not very balanced. His head weighs much more than his body, and you have to angle his tail a certain way to get him to stand on his own. Both his head and tail have joints, but his head has a much more limited range of motion.

And now, let's make use of those alternate parts!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Magusfigures1449273760.jpeg
“Well now… shall we dance?”

The “battle pose” seen in official pictures (or something approximating it… i wasn’t looking at reference). This pose makes use of both extra arm parts, the drawn sword, and the smirking expression. It was very easy to make a natural looking battle pose, as opposed to Mikazuki, whom I had to struggle with for a while. However, Kogits’ hair made it hard to change out his arms, so I had to do a bit of deconstruction to get each piece snug in place.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Magusfigures1449273762.jpeg
“Come! Dance with this little fox!”

Aah, the smirking expression is too much…!!! He really looks like he’s about to get himself in trouble!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Magusfigures1449275718.jpeg
“Master says my fur is shiny!”

And now, the pleased face! With a special appearance by the GSC exclusive strap that came with him. i really am in my friend's debt haha....

This pose also makes use of the third right arm/hand part, which were meant for re-creating the original illustration. They can be easily repurposed for other needs, though!

And speaking of the original illustration…

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Magusfigures1449044544.jpeg
Ta-da! I’ve been using my Kogitsunemaru washi file as a background the whole time!

I think the nendoroid ended up being a rather faithful reproduction…!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Magusfigures1449044546.jpeg
“The big Kogitsunemaru… supposedly. I’ve certainly become small now!”

Ahh, I'm having too much fun with this!! >u<

You can see the small ding on his bangs more clearly in this picture, though. Luckily, it doesn't show up in all the photos.

YELLS

they look so nice together!!! I’m really glad I have them both now ;u; it looks like they’re looking at each other end me

i initially started shipping this as a joke because i thought “foxy grandpa” was too perfect a ship name to pass up but here i am, kogimika garbage, with figures, a physical copy of a doujinshi, and like twelve pages of wip fanfiction to back it up

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Magusfigures1449044548.jpeg
congratulations on your marriage

It's nice to have two figures from the same series who are on good terms with each other lmao. Nendoroids look great on their own, but I think they look cutest with a friend!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Magusfigures1449273889.jpeg
Kogitsunemaru with another fox friend!! no items, fox only, final destination

Usually when I write reviews I come up with silly interactions between the new nendo and ones I already have, but I couldn't think of many this time... too busy fangirling about him and mikazuki together. I did come up with this one though:

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Magusfigures1449273885.jpeg
N: Hm… what kind of Pokemon is that??
Konnosuke: can i help you

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Magusfigures1449273887.jpeg
Here’s how I’m displaying them haha… right smack in the middle of the Ship Shelf

Final Thoughts:

Sculpting: 10/10 - Honestly, I'm so amazed at the sculpting on him!! They made his hair look so fluffy, and the soft plastic parts were a really good idea. Not to mention the detail on his clothes and armor... For something so small, he really has a lot of presence!
Painting: 8/10 - His color scheme and clothing doesn't lend itself to fancy painting as much as Mikazuki's did, but his clothes still look relatively flat... however, the fine details on his armor more than make up for it. I didn't notice any painting errors, either
Posing: 9/10 - He came with a variety of alternate parts, and I was able to recreate the poses from the sample pictures with ease. His alternate parts also leave considerable room for making your own poses! I had more fun posing him than most other nendoroids i have haha...
Base: 8/10 - I like the round crest stands that Touken Ranbu nendoroids all have, but I kind of wish they were made of frosted plastic like regular nendo stands haha... However, I really liked the creative stand arm. It anchors him quite firmly, and I'm glad Kogits doesn't need to have a hole in his back because of it. I wonder if they'll keep this strategy for hakama-wearing nendos in the future? or just ones with long hair...?
Packaging: 6/10? - I uh, didn't have any thoughts about the packaging? Nendoroids have pretty unified box designs nowadays, and his didn't come with any sort of inset to use as a background (hence why I used my washi file instead). I kind of wish more nendoroids came with fun box insets; I used Aoba's for three reviews in a row once haha...
Enjoyment: 10/10!!! honestly!!! I was a little wary at first because I didn't think his sample pictures looked as nice as Mikazuki's, but he came out way better than expected! I'm so in love haha... He's fun to pose, nice to look at, and he just looks stunning next to Mikazuki.

Overall, I’m very satisfied with this purchase!! Even still not knowing much about touken ranbu and in a constant state of denial about whether or not i go here, I’m still really glad to have both Kogitsunemaru and Mikazuki on my shelf. Mikazuki was beautiful enough on his own, but the playful Kogitsunemaru makes a nice contrast to Mikazuki’s gentle aura. Even on his own Kogits has a lot of presence, so I can’t wait to work with him more in the future!

Anyway, thanks for reading!!! Maybe I'll post more reviews here in the future... I've definitely got one more figure on the way!

Also, if you're interested in some of my previous reviews, you can find them in my "anime toys" tumblr tag. They won't have the standard scoring bc it's mostly just me messing around with them haha

caneton (2 years ago) #5238561i know NOTHING about touken ranbu, but this guy's design is legitimately killing me... i want to order him so much, but i'm about to get the N nendo, too, and i am quickly falling into a pattern that will destroy my wallet, especially since i also like to have my nendos hang out with friends from their series.
edit bc i somehow pressed submit while i was typing. incredible.

Haha, even with all the merch I own I still feel like I know nothing about Touken Ranbu, so I feel you there! :'D

Kogitsunemaru and N coming out at the same time was definitely unfair to my wallet orz... luckily my friend and I had arranged a figure trade (i bought her a nendoroid she actually wanted in exchange for kogits), so my wallet didn't get hit too hard. I hope the figures I want in the future don't all come out at once again orz

If you're on the fence about ordering him, I definitely recommend him! Even without any prior knowledge of the series, he's just lovely. (But, I would do the responsible thing and wait until your wallet can take it haha :'D)

A really enjoyable review! Thank you for sharing! *///q///* Seeing him and his lovely hair makes me wonder why did I choose sal small packet for shipping. orz He won't be here for a while. *looks up and locks eye contact with Jiji on shelf* o-oh no, he heard me.
I love how you used his washi file (I wanted to ask what is it before I got to the photo where you switched the side~) for background and the lighting is pleasantly soft yellow that goes perfectly with his colours.
And N, aawww, that gave me a laugh~ I had to see if you reviewed him on your blog and you did! I can't wait to get mine, he's at the post office but here they don't deliver on weekends so I'll have him on Monday. He's so precious. And yes we need Touko aaghhh

Aaah thank you for your long comment! ;u; Hopfully your Kogi will reach you before too long!!

I had to take the washi file out of the plastic i bought it in so the price tags wouldn't be in the pictures haha... i can't hang it on my wall anymore bc the plastic got destroyed but it was definitely worth it for the nice background :'D

My desk is so cluttered nowadays that I've started using backgrounds for my reviews (and/or doing them at the windowsill where the lighting is better). I was lucky I had things that went with Kogits and N but I don't know what I'm going to do going forward haha...

And godspeed getting your N!! He'll be worth the wait I hope ;u;
