Real Art Project 1/7 Mars Mukai-SanReal Art Project 1/7 Mars Mukai-San

This article is not suitable for people under 18.
I'm over 18
Today we'll be reviewing a figure that I'd had my eye on for quite some time, Real Art Project's Mars Mukai-San. If you're reading this, you clicked past the NSFW disclaimer, but this figure can be cast off and additionally she has some shall we say "mature" accessories. You've been warned...

About the figure: Mars Mukai-San is an original character designed by Maya Miyazaki. I did not realize this before buying this figure, but apparently Maya Miyazaki has been a fairly prolific producer of ecchi and hentai manga, and I can't think of too many other female mangaka right offhand with this specialty. For the North American anime fans, I could find exactly one anime which has seen a physical media release with Miyazaki's name attached to it-the two episode Holy Knight OVA, based on an ecchi manga of the same name.

Packaging----------8/10

The box front is fairly plain. The 18+ nature of this figure is clearly proclaimed, and the box is designed in a way so that innocent onlookers will not see some of Mars-san's more interesting accessories.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/01/1426300.jpeg

One side of the box features an illustration of Mars-san by illustrator Maya Miyazaki. I didn't know too much about Miyazaki before buying this figure and doing a little research but she has a pretty distinctive art style. The autograph is an interesting flourish.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/01/1426301.jpeg

The other side shows how that illustration translates into figure form.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/01/1426302.jpeg

As we'll see in a moment, the back of the box might be the most interesting part of the packaging.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/01/1426303.jpeg

Mars-san is an original character, and I like the little biography. Apparently, she's a juice salesperson by day and sex-ed educator by night. The little bullet points at the bottom are kind of funny, too. In fact, it is possible to cast her off all the way "to her sexy naked attire" :). I have to wonder if the reference to the character only visiting males who have lost all hope of losing their virginity is not some sort of little dig at some subgroup of otaku-dom as well...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/01/1426304.jpeg

Mars-san in the blister. Since she's cast off, there will be lots of plastic sheeting to unwrap.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429757.jpeg

I initially wondered how that little table was kept in place and I was pleased to see there's a small peg to keep it stationary.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429758.jpeg

This is a decent sized figure, and while the box is quite thin, it is kind of heavy. The box measures 33 by 24 by 11 cm, and figure plus box weigh approximately 630 grams.

Posing----------9/10

Mars-san's pose is very interesting. It duplicates the box illustration nicely, and she gives off a very confident and assertive vibe the way she's got one knee perched on that little table. I guess if your second job is sex ed teacher, then you have to be pretty self-confident!

Let's have a look at her.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429766.jpeg

As we'll see, this is quite the sexy figure, and I like how she does not appear to be meek or submissive in any way, so I have to give some kudos to the design of her pose!

Sculpting----------9/10
Painting-----------8/10
Accessories--------8/10

Overall, this figure turned out quite well in terms of paint and sculpt. She has some really interesting features, and the only real issue on the sculpting front concerns how she appears when not displayed with some of her accessories, as some additional optional parts would have been appreciated on that front. Generally, the paint work is good, but we'll see that there are some concerns about paint transfer, and there is one area where the painting is, well, strange.

I like Mars' red eyes, and since she is supposed to be an alien, she does have a very exotic beauty about her.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429767.jpeg

The asymmetrical design of her hair is an interesting feature. If you like to photograph your figures, that huge lock of hair presents some challenges in trying to light her properly, however!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429768.jpeg

The spherical hair buns do reinforce the slightly-otherworldly feel of her character design.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429769.jpeg

She does have a few rough patches in her hair, the transition to her bangs is pretty abrupt, and the fact that those whatever-they-are surrounding her hair buns seem to plug directly into her head bugs me a little bit...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429770.jpeg

The spiky hair is another eye-catching feature.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429771.jpeg

Sometimes a simple feature can give a figure that extra little something, and I think Mars' necktie is such a feature. The way the necktie hangs between her breasts is pretty damn sexy, if you ask me.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429772.jpeg

All the round features in her outfit bring to mind Range Murata, who also likes to use regular geometric patterns in his designs. I wonder if Murata inspired Maya Miyazaki in any way in the creation of this character?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429774.jpeg

Her arms come off to facilitate the cast-off process, and that band around her bicep serves to hide the attachment point.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429775.jpeg

Her fingers are nicely differentiated.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429777.jpeg

The little round portholes in her panties remind me of a similar feature on Alter's Muse of Range Murata ITEM #186018. The "cat ears" on the top trim of her panties is kind of an interesting feature, too.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429779.jpeg

Thongs are one of my moe points, and I will not deny that element of Mars' design was part of the appeal of the figure.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429780.jpeg

One of the lines of text on the back of the box was "very pretty and sexy back side!", and I'd have to agree with that assessment :).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429781.jpeg

I like how she wears a stocking on one leg, and she's got that huge brace on her other leg, as that continues the asymmetrical theme of the character's design.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429782.jpeg

I guess that brace would be made of rubber or silicone, but it's so wide that such a thing would surely be really hard to get on and off! In terms of practicality, the brace hides a point where Mars' leg will detach. In fact, it does so sufficiently well that I did not initially realize that her leg could be removed.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429783.jpeg

Her heavy rubber boots are yet another feature that reminds me of Range Murata, and the zipper on the side is decently executed.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429784.jpeg

The heavy tread on the bottom of the boots is an interesting feature.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429785.jpeg

Now, let's up the ecchi factor by casting her off. To do so, her head and arms must be removed. If you look closely, you can see some paint transfer where her arms attach to her body. Additionally, I noticed that wherever her clothes were in contact with skin, there was a little bit of paint transfer. Generally, it cleaned up with a magic eraser, but that's something to keep in mind if you're thinking about buying this figure.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429786.jpeg

Removing her clothes is quite simple, as large pegs hold them closed.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429787.jpeg

In addition to their aesthetic value, those large round discs on her outfit make it very easy to clothe and unclothe the figure. To put her top back on, you slide that big tab under the disc, press down slightly, and that's it! The ease in which it's possible to switch between her clothed and cast-off states is a big plus in my book!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429788.jpeg

At first, I couldn't quite figure out how to get her panties removed, but her leg detaches.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429798.jpeg

Cast off and ready!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429799.jpeg

Here's a quick look at her in cast-off mode.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429801.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429802.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429803.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429804.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429805.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429806.jpeg

In case you were wondering, it is possible to remove her collar and necktie...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429807.jpeg

...but not really, as removing the collar and tie leaves a huge visible gap. This also brings me to the biggest flaws with this figure. For starters, you may have noticed that there's not a lot of detail on her nipples.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429808.jpeg

The shot below illustrates what is probably the most obvious flaw with this figure. It's also a crotch shot, so you could skip this if you want...

View spoilerHide spoiler
The painting on her crotch area is really, really strange. She's not barbie-doll down there, but I don't know what's going on with that long pink line down there!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/08/1430270.jpeg

Normally, I'm not a fan of butt-dimples, but they aren't overly obtrusive.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/08/1430271.jpeg

Now, let's ramp up the ecchi factor even more by setting up Mars' accessories, a vibrator and some tissues which I can only assume are supposed to look like they've been...used...in some way.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429809.jpeg

Her toy fits in one hand, and the controller goes in her other hand.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429810.jpeg

I do like how she's eyeing her toy! Her backstory says she visits virginal men, so you have to wonder what she plans on teaching them with this...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429811.jpeg

The controller has some interesting little details.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429812.jpeg

The tissue box is certainly an interesting accessory. The box appears to be made of cardboard, but the tissue in there as well as the used tissues are plastic. This is another feature of this figure that almost seems to be a subtle gibe...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429813.jpeg

Mars back in her clothed state with all the accessories in place.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429815.jpeg

If I could change one thing about this figure, I would have included some alternate arm parts. When she's not displayed with her toy, it just looks like something is missing. It would have been perfect if they would have included some alternate parts so she'd look a little more natural sans toy, like Skytube did with Matsuri Togetsu ITEM #209601.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429814.jpeg

Base----------9/10

The hot pink base is consistent with the color scheme on other parts of the figure, and I like the 1970's font.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429816.jpeg

The table is another very interesting accessory. The little "planet" in the middle is a nice nod to Mars' alien nature, and the table is very retro-art deco, almost like the kind of thing that you might have seen in someone's house in the 1950's.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429817.jpeg

So, the base has some neat features, and it complements the figure without distracting from the figure. That's about as good as it gets, right?

Scale Comparison

Mars-san is listed at 1/7 scale, and I measure her at right about 9 inches (23 cm) in height, which would make her about 5'3" (160 cm), which seems consistent with her appearance. Since you need to know these things, her toy is about 1.25" (3.2 cm) in length and about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in circumference. At 1/7 scale, that would make it about 8.5 inches (21.5 cm) in length and about 2.2 inches (5.6 cm) in diameter. Not a trivial toy, that's for sure...

My biggest issue with the figure is her appearance when not wielding that toy, but with some creativity, accessories from other figures could be swapped in for when mom drops by for a visit.

Spear-wielding Mars.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429818.jpeg

The spear is borrowed from Megahouse's Elina ITEM #1000, who is 1/8 scale for comparison.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429819.jpeg

Megaphone Mars...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429820.jpeg

...borrowing Sonico's ITEM #219518 prop. That Sonico is a smallish 1/8 scale.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429821.jpeg

What's at the other end of that chain?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429823.jpeg

It's the lovely submissive Brenda ITEM #1717 .

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429827.jpeg

Two of my favorite naughty figures having a girls-only party. Matsuri Togetsu ITEM #209601 is 1/6 scale and I think you can see how she's a little larger than Mars.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429828.jpeg

What do you suppose is about to happen here? Silfietta Lashia ITEM #1202 is 1/6 scale, and you can see how she compares to Mars-san in scale.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/12/07/1429829.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

Arguments for: Lots of neat features (her asymmetrical design, exotic beauty, and Range Murata-esque elements in her design), easy cast-offability, confident and assertive pose, interesting accessories, attractive and functional base, and there's almost certainly some commentary about fandom rooted in the design of the figure.

Arguments against: The figure ends up looking a little bit different compared to the original artwork, some concerns about paint transfer, and Mars-san could really use some optional arm parts to give a more natural appearance when she's not wielding her toy.

All in all however, this is quite a neat (if slightly naughty) figure, and I'm glad to have added her to my collection. Highly recommended if you're in the market for an ecchi figure that doesn't feel particularly exploitative.

Availability (as of this writing)

Not common.

Only 36 people on MFC claim to own her, and I've seen her on various preowned sites every now and then, but you'll likely have to do some hunting if you want to make Mars-san part of your collection. I managed to find one out in the wild at a US store for about 60 bucks a while back, but it looks like I got the last one they had. If you go hunting for this figure, I'd guess you'll pay 6000-8000 yen for one secondhand. Happy hunting!

victorviper (3 years ago) #12440223I never really thought of this figure as being all that Yamashita-like before, but you might be onto something :). I had Mars on a different shelf, but maybe I should see what she looks like next to ITEM #752 and ITEM #559.

Yes! Exactly those 2 I used to own and thought she was very fitting with them! :)

Maakie (3 years ago) #12422382Oh man, I really like this figure! I once almost bought her, because I thought her design would look well with the Shunya collection I had back then. Right now I barely own any Shunya figures anymore and lost interest in this one... But it was nice to see so much up-close pictures and a review of her! ^^
Also I thought she first looked okay by herself, but after I saw her with the toy in her hand and looked back at the not-holding-any-items-pictures, her hand just looks so weird empty!

DelicateThunder (3 years ago) #11815116This is a great review! Liked the pictures and the way you've done the comparison between Mars and other figures. I agree with you about that pink line though, looks strange. (Maybe she's used her toy too much and the paint is wearing off? XD)

Thanks for the comment. The painting on the crotch area is certainly one of the stranger things I've seen. They would have been better off just leaving it unpainted...

gundamuk (3 years ago) #11742307Hilda Reiko! I had her but she fell off during an earthquake a couple years ago... She broke part of her skirt/top and some of the hat. So sad but polystone breaks easily. Anyway, I kept her head and some of the props and base but tossed the rest. If you're looking I think Mandarake should have her as I saw her at their Nagoya store last weekend.
I never got the other Reiko. I saw her a couple times but only the white version which I wasn't interested in.

I like blonde figures, so the blonde Reiko *should* really be the one, but I agree with you that the other variant is the best one, as the black outfit stands out so much more than does the white outfit. It's the kind of figure that would be cool to show off to open-minded friends but it's so scarce and with the elaborate base, the polystone, and the large scale, it would probably cost a small fortune to ship to boot.

victorviper (3 years ago) #11742269It sure does look like RAP is focusing on their 1/3 dolls. It's too bad because they've made some neat figures; I'd like to have ITEM #114027 and ITEM #78282 although that latter figure is pretty much impossible to find.

gundamuk (3 years ago) #11737981Awesome review and pics to boot. I have seen her in Mandarake when browsing before but never thought about picking her up... Now I may have second thoughts.
By the way, congrats also for what I think is the first review of a RAP figure on MFC. RAP doesn't make too many figures so I guess that makes sense. Coincidentally, I was talking to RAP's main designer at the Ikebukuro doll show yesterday and asked if there were any new figure plans coming up but it sounds like the main focus remains their 1/3 scale Pink Drops dolls. No complaints from me about that but it would be neat to see some new figure designs from them.
Thanks again for the professional review.
