Nendoroid DIY face (updated)Nendoroid DIY face (updated)

Hello MFC,

Today I'll be talking about the DIY Nendoroid face plates sold exclusively in conventions GSC attend, these face plates are really hard to get online, being rare is one thing people would sell for a very high price but these particular items were not even sold anywhere, I searched a lot but it didn't pay off, to the point where I was considering to buy the hidamari no sketch nendoroids just for the faceplate that was similar, while you can definitely take a faceplate you already have but didn't like much, thin it then modify it but because the faceplates have facial expressions sculpted on which limits the customization possibilities, only a smooth noseless faceplate can let you draw whatever your wild imagination might come up with.
Then one day my boyfriend told me he was attending an anime convention in taiwan, the first thing I thought about were the faceplates, so I told him to buy me 3 if the GSC stand was there, well he ended up buying like 10 of them and the swimsuit nendoroid body set, cuz they were cheap he said lol.

Since I didn't need that much I put some for sale online, a couple of collectors were hesitating before buying , one of them because of the skin tone not matching the nendoroid he or she owns. As you can see in the pictures below, the skin color matches like 60 percent of the nendoroids I own, some were not very far from the tone like madoka araragi etc but some others were just too pale that the mismatch become too obvious like for mikasa, nothern princess, that guy from touken ranbu wearing white (srr forgot his name) etc

the second person who was serious about purchasing was hesitating because he didn't know how to draw so I made a deal with him and told him I would draw whatever he wants. What he requested was not easy for me to draw, as I am more used to drawing anime style. He asked me to draw two realistic smiley expressions... I did my best and the final result might not have been extactly like what he wanted it but he was pretty satisfied with it in the end.

And this one is a customization of my boyfriend based of an illustration I drew for him a couple of years ago as a birthday present (for this nendoroid of him I bought for the first time two copies of the same nendoroid which is patchouli, I'm not the type of people who can afford to have many copies of a single figure when I can't afford all of the figure I want out there haha):

Last time I saw a blog about these faceplates, people using paint, markers and stuff, however I'd personnally advice using a sharpened watercolour pencil and soft pastel for gradients, because it is very hard to get small details with a paint brush especially if you've never painted anything before, another advantage of drawing with colored pencils is that you can erase it with a precision eraser until you get it right, then you seal it with a sealant sometimes you won't get the right pigmentation right with one layer so you have to apply two or three layers of sealant and darken the lines after each layer before being done.

And this last picture is an ahegao faceplate I am working on as a friend of mine requested lol

Updated first try ,but not as neat as I wanted it to be, so I will just redo it later :

I have two of the con exclusive blank faceplates that I drew on with their supplies (like, sharpies and stuff) and the color has bled out and turned purple/etc. What do you suggest I use to remove the crappy faces? And/or if I sent them to you would you customize them? :P

M-Linfa (2 years ago) #8831324Yes I do, if your wanted expression does not requiere a noseless faceplate (because I ran out of those)

How much do you reckon it would be to do this Nico face: blog-imgs-51.fc... or this Nozomi face: i.imgur.com/p2B... and ship it to the UK? I'm saving up for Alter's Nozomi right now but I'm really interested in these so if the price isn't too bad I might have to set aside some money for one :)

LilAtomicX10 (2 years ago) #7906566All good to know. XD I have copics, would those work? I know it won't work for white, but I think I found an acrylic marker that does puts on white pretty good. lol

I just uploaded the tutorial you requested, I found that sakura roller white gel works pretty well for white details, now that you talk about white markers I have one too from the same Sakura company that makes pigma microns white roller gels, I'll definitely try it on my next tutorial.

M-Linfa (2 years ago) #7791691It's hard to get a pure color with water color unless u spray a thick layer of sealant. So I also use paint when doing white parts, oh and for other colors I just use alcohol based markers instead of paint.

LilAtomicX10 (2 years ago) #7781155This is all good info. I've only ever painted on eyes on one custom and I barely got that to look right. lol but I have some projects that I wanna do, but the face plates are my main problem because I don't know how to approach first making them. lol my main problem is getting the white to actually show up on the face using a watercolor pencil. lol

M-Linfa (2 years ago) #7777133I don't mind , though it is mostly the same as drawing on paper, I can give more tips on which materials to use first to avoid smudge or ruining the layer below, but that'll take a bit of time, as I am a bit busy lately. But to put it simply it is just a series of drawing with a pencil erasing until satisfied then seal the layer, move on to the next layer without worrying about ruining the first, though if you're inking or painting colors then you gotta be extra careful as you can't erase it without damaging the layer below and if you don't have more blank faces you can still use your old ones if you thin them unless you are satisfied with those and don't wanna change them. You can also use faceplates from regular nendoroids you don't like and modify them.

LilAtomicX10 (2 years ago) #7771849This is amazing. xD I hate to ask, but can you maybe show a step by step of you drawing a face plate? I don't know if you still have blank face plates to spare though. lol
