Today we’re taking a look at Erina from Shokugeki no Souma (AKA Food Wars). I’d have to say that Erina is my favourite girl in the show and that is saying something, because all of the girls in that series are incredible. So let’s find out if this figure is worthy of the one and only, Erina-sama.
It seems to me that Good Smile Company have put some effort into this box. I don’t think it’s anything revolutionary. The packaging itself is about as standard as you can get, but they’ve tried to give it a regal flair with a nice pattern and gold text.
Some of you may recall this figure is based on the Eggs Benedict scene from episode 13 of the series. As far as the concept for this figure goes, it’s perfect. Because not only is it based off a scene from the show, but it also encompasses everything about Erina. For some reason they’ve change the dark purple(?) on her outfit to a red, but I kind of like it more.
The first thing you’ll probably notice is the fact that Erina sits atop a base with a red, carpet like material. Its purpose is to elevate Erina, but, if you don’t want this base and just want Erina and her throne, then that’s totally an option!
And I’m not sure if it’s technically part of the base or the figure, but then you have the throne on which Erina reigns supreme. It’s nicely detailed with some lovely engravings and you can even see the buttons on the cushion. Speaking of the cushion, it looks really soft, but is actually quite hard. Even though it would have been great if GSC used a softer material, I imagine that it would have upped the price by quite a bit so I applaud them for finding a nice great compromise. Something that looks good, but is also affordable. A magnet would’ve been nice though since I’m always a bit nervous about figures in a sitting position when there is nothing to keep them in place. It should also be noted that the chair is quite heavy, so not only does it look great, but it doesn’t feel hollow or cheap.
Erina herself, is flawless. I’ve noticed that with the last few Good Smile Company figures I have received that the skin tone was ever so slightly off, but that’s certainly not the case here. It’s a beautiful, natural colour and looks very smooth.
Her outfit compliments the rest of the figure. Or does the rest of the figure compliment her? either way, all the aspects come together beautifully. I particularly like the creases in her dress and the various bits of jewellery such as her necklace and crown. Not to mention you can see her bellybutton through her clothing.
They’ve nailed her hair. There’s plenty of strands and I’m impressed with the colour in particular. There was the risk they could have made it too orange, but Erina’s hair is a gorgeous honey blonde.
Words can not describe how perfect her expression is. I would go as far to say that it's my favourite aspect of the figure! She has that real conceited, superior, “I’m royalty, you’re a peasant” look. It’s totally hot.
And with those gorgeous purple eyes her gaze is all that more mesmerising. It also adds a splash of a different colour, because as much as I love this figure, there’s not much in the way of colours other than red, gold and white.
Speaking of hot, those are some fine legs!
And that’s some gobsmacking cleavage! And those curves!
Interestingly, there’s an additional part to this figure. Some sort of disembodied translucent hand. I like what they were going for and it does add that little extra flair to a fairly plain figure, but It does look a little strange. Still, it is optional so I’m certainly not going to fault them.
Overall, I think the big danger with this figure, or any other figure that goes for a regal, luxury or premium look is that if it’s not done well, the final product can feel cheap or hollow. Thankfully, this is a very competent and solid effort from GSC.
It’s far from the most dynamic figure out there, so this figure is lacking a bit of that “Wow” factor present in other figures, but it’s very hard to complain about this one. To put it simply, GSC nailed it. I see no reason not to recommend this figure. This is the figure that Erina deserves and that’s the highest praise I can give.
