2016: My Year in Loot

Welcome to the fifth annual installment of my looking back on the past year of Monthly Loot Pics. As with previous years, I spent too much money. This past month was especially bad for that due to the USD/JPY exchange rate and a pretty decent holiday sale at HLJ (though I managed not to pick up too much during this year's Right Stuf holiday sale for a change!). All that HLJ loot, along with a huge pile of manga preorders that have come in and some other stuff, will show up in the January 2017 pic. As for 2016, let's get started!

------------

January

The year started off modestly, with a few figures, goods, and manga. The GBFT trading figures were disappointingly small blog/27088, but this was a pretty decent month otherwise.

February

...and now for something completely different XD February's loot haul is so big largely because I finally got my share of splits from CLUB #350, a now-defuct club founded by KILANI. This club was where I met most of my best Tsuki-board/MFC friends, and getting this parcel was a bittersweet closure on that era of my internet life. I also bought a few items from kilani's MFC shop, which were included in that shipment; one of these was ITEM #60973, which I use all the time and is now my favorite mug. To see the split loot on its own, check out PICTURE #1466892.

Rounding out the rest of February is some stuff from group orders hosted at CLUB #618 (including my very last Animate USA GO), a few things from Blizzard Gear (unfortunately, the Pylon USB Hubs were pretty disappointing), and a some other stuff. No manga, surprisingly...

WHEW, that's better. A fair amount of manga and Western graphic novels make up the bulk of this month's loot. My personal highlight for this month is a collection I had long awaited: Evan Dorkin's The Eltingville Club! If you've never heard of it, it's a funny and frequently scathing look at geek fandom. Dark Horse has some sample pages from this collection on their site.

I was also one of the lucky ones who managed to get ITEM #388627 on the earlier side. I usually double-dip for exclusive Nendos, but given the size and price of this set, opted not to for a change.

April

The manga multiplies! Included in this batch are the rest of Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer and the first omnibus volumes of two of my favorite 2016 English-language debuts: Orange and Princess Jellyfish. There's also a couple of old Ranma 1/2 volumes that I picked up via CLUB #29's "User Giveaway/Freebies" thread. Figure-wise, the highlight for me were my first ever Mechatro WeGos, which I reviewed here: blog/28710.

I also went to one of Miku Expo's San Francisco shows! The tickets were an early birthday present from my husband, and I loved the performance. However, I picked up the Miku Expo-related items shown here from Kinokuniya shortly before the show (the pin badge was a store exclusive, too). The Bravely Second CE, a Neko Atsume book, and a couple small goods round out this month.

May

A little bit of everything, including another Eurovision CD! And a snarky and informative Eurovision book! Um, anyway...

Amongst the rest are a couple items which I wrote reviews for later on (blog/28756 and blog/29609), some of my very last Nintendo DS pickups, and my second Parfom.

June

Back to the big loot! As a birthday present to myself, I placed a largish Amazon.co.jp order consisting of jigsaw puzzles, Vocaloid CDs, and a few other things. There's also the usual manga and a CDJapan order.

One of the things I got from Amazon JP was Puyo Puyo Tetris, which many gamers, including myself, had long given up hope of a North American release for (also note that I haven't played my copy yet). However, English-language PS4 trophies have recently been spotted online twitter.com/R_K..., so perhaps a localization is incoming. If it comes out on platforms I don't own, I'm cool with it, but if it also shows up on platforms I do, then I have mixed feelings...

July

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1470099423.jpeg
The usual Christmas in July hits with Snow Mikus, though this year, I opted for just the figma. Since I tend not to like fabric on figures, I skipped the Nendoroid, and the figma looked better to me anyway.

Overall, this is yet another month with a little bit of everything, including my favorite artbook release of the year, Akira Toriyama Dragon Quest Illustrations (ITEM #434013)! This artbook is magnificent and comprehensive, and a must-have for Toriyama and/or DQ fans.

------------

August

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1472681981.jpeg
My only doujinshi and static scaled figure pickups of the year join yet more manga and other items for August. Also acquired this year is a Holy Grail, Necoconeco, as recounted here: blog/29906.

Another notable part of this month's loot is what I consider to be the best deal I got this past year: the aforementioned scaled figure, ITEM #287701, from a Hobby Search sale for 50% off! MitchieM is currently one of my favorite Vocaloid composers, and Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is one of my all-time fave illustrators, so I was happy to get such a good deal on her. The guitar/keytar is a pain to pose, though, what with those individual stings.

------------

September

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1476562155.jpeg
PAX Prime was in September this year, and my only paid pickups from that were a Firewatch art card set and the IndieBox edition of The Stanley Parable (2016's PAX-specific loot pic is here: PICTURE #1636286). There's also a handful of straps and such brought from Seattle's Kinokuniya on our last day in that city.

As for all the manga this month, I have a good excuse for much of it: they're Kickstarter add-ons and/or rewards. The BL stuff is from DMP's massive SAKIRA Kickstarter, and I Saw It came via Last Gasp's Barefoot Gen for Schools and Libraries KS. The rest of the manga came from Right Stuf, as usual, and Kinokuniya Seattle/SF.

------------

October

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1478104468.jpeg
Still more manga! I won't go into talking about that too much, save that it came from Right Stuf (the Viz 30th anniversary coin, too), Akadot, and June. There's also the odd video game-- seems to have been a lot of those for me this year-- and ITEM #484772 with its store-exclusive bonus clear file from CDJapan.

The rest of this batch came from Surugaya via FromJapan. I originally went there to search for a certain jigsaw puzzle and ended up with a different one, three of my most-wanted game music albums, and a few other things. Such is shopping ^^;

November

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1483646319.jpeg
Here's a month featuring something that doesn't happen too often: orders from AmiAmi, Hobby Search, and HLJ. I rarely buy from AmiAmi anymore, but ended up doing so to get certain items for my husband's Christmas present that other shops didn't have, and threw in a few things for myself while I was at it. One of these was ITEM #1610, my first ever preowned item from AmiAmi, which I believe had its condition labeled as A/B. It arrived in perfect condition and I couldn't even spot anything wrong with the box.

I also picked up some more Multi-Plates. After reading ILLAMASQUA's blog post about them blog/29221, I picked up a couple sets, which you can see in my July pic above. I liked them so much that I bought four more, two black and two clear. They're especially great for group-posing figmas and S.H.Figuarts :D

Other than those things, there's a few Black Friday pickups, some books, and a few other things. The Kit-Kats and gum were from my first ever Candysan order, which was also originally placed to buy gifts for people.

------------

December

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1483646321.jpeg
A reasonably light month here, with a few select Christmas presents thrown in: Corel Painter 2015 and How May We Hate You?: Notes from the Concierge Desk from my husband and a custom-made pillow of the Judge from the Ace Attorney series from METALY (my husband got one of Charles Lee from Assassin's Creed III. As for why these pillows came about in the first place... it's a long story).

My few pickups from this year's Right Stuf holiday sale are here as well, including the DVD box set for Oreimo 2. I hated the ending of that series, but there were several great episodes on the way, so I figured why not :P Rounding out this month are more books; the Halcyon 6 IndieBox, which I got thanks to a special voucher which I picked up for a little extra when I bought The Stanley Parable's box; some exclusives from the Goodsmile Online Shop; and a cute cat calendar I picked up at Maido in SF's Japantown.

------------

Some notes:

Grails, near-grails, and other long-coveted items I finally obtained in 2015:
- Alphonse Elric DX Figure: B Deformation ver. (ITEM #12043)
- Necoconeco plush (ITEM #40466)
- Depachika Cakeshop Uniform Collection (ITEM #341221)
- Kou Yoneda English-language reprinted manga
- Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA Original Soundtrack

My favorite 2016 figure, etc. releases:
- Nendoroid Pokemon Trainer Red, Champion Ver. (ITEM #388627)
- Akira Toriyama Dragon Quest Illustrations (ITEM #434013)
- Hatsune Miku Greatest Idol ver. (ITEM #287701)
- This was a digital purchase, but I want to include the new Doom, my favorite game release of 2016

Other favorite pickups:
- Snow Miku mug (ITEM #60973)
- Seven Seas' Orange omnibus editions, vols. 1 and 2
- All those Multi-Plates (ITEM #456498 and ITEM #456371)
- Fit's Slime and Metal Slime gum! I haven't tried any yet, though; hope it's good

Goals for 2017:
- Cut back on video game purchases. Between the DS, 3DS, and PS3 pickups shown here and the many games I bought on Steam last year, my backlog is unwieldy again. Fortunately, I don't have any pending preorders right now, with the very important exception of Persona 5 ;)
- Cut back on BL manga. I'm set for awhile and honestly can't see myself buying much in 2017, save for a new release or two.
- Assemble more plamo. This goal was also on my 2016 list and I utterly failed at it, having finished the year without putting together a single model kit. I hope to do better this time around.

That about wraps things up for this year's edition. Have a great 2017 everyone; here's hoping it's less stressful than the previous year and at the very least, I wish you good luck in your figure and other geek-related shopping!

R_Kasahara (11 months ago) #17344061According to my Backloggery, I got over fifty new games and DLC in 2016. A lot of that was during the Steam Winter Sale, too. Aside from P5, there's a few Kickstarted games I'm waiting on, but in the meantime, I'm hoping no real must-haves come out until at least June (though I'm curious as to whether or not Etrian Odyssey V will finally get announced for North America). Good luck with your own backlog; it does sound like we're in similar situations there ^^;

Oh jeeze, I haven't even started using backloggery despite setting up an account last year and I fear what my count is at if I include games bought from the Steam sales as I picked up a lot of the Final Fantasy PC ports as I seemingly can never own the games enough. I've got Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and the 1.5/2.5 ports for PS4 as well as Persona 5. I'm genuinely hoping that there won't be that many games that I am after this year so I can start chipping away at my enormous backlog.

_thricegreat (11 months ago) #17334585Just saw your goals for this year and can completely sympathise with the need to cut back on video game purchases. I must've bought 40ish games last year, this year I'm trying to cut back but not sure if I'll manage as I already have three games on preorder and bought another three yesterday. Then again, it does kinda makes sense to take advantage of sales whilst they're on, right?

Eren3950 (11 months ago) #17342624Cutting back on video games huh. Not for me lol the Nintendo Switch is coming and I need it along with Nintendo's games.
OMGGGGG, don't remind me! Whether or not I get a Switch at launch is entirely dependent on the games, but I definitely want one as well.

About this blog

I don't write blog posts here as often as I should, but at least I'm writing at all!

Posts here generally concern figures and other collectables. For reviews, I often like to highlight items which may have gone overlooked, or are otherwise interesting. In general, I strive for high-quality posts above all else.

I also maintain a blog here which is mostly about video games, and sometimes about manga and anime.
