Decorations and Nudity

This blog post is not suitable for people under 18.
I'm over 18
Greetings, friends, and a happy new year.

As usual, please allow me to warn you. As I ramble a lot and, at times, just enjoy putting whatever I’m thinking on paper, this entry will feature a lot of text before I get to my actual point. Actual loot appears down there at the picture in the spoiler. Everything before that is probably just a lot of fluff and insight into what many people would perceive as uninteresting, so please don’t feel forced to read if you don’t enjoy it.

First of all, despite what the title of this blog entry in consideration of certain genres predominantly featured in my collection might suggest, there will be no overabundance of nudity here - fortunately, if I might add.

Now, moving on and to give a little perspective as to why I’m even bothering writing this, please allow me to clear any uncertainty - I enjoy nudity in arts (not exactly a plot twist, I know), whether we’re talking about pornography or erotica.

I love erotica and I love the female body as much as I love my own (healthy self-esteem, my friends), however, I strongly believe that there is a time and place for everything and, for the most part, I think erotic works belong either into bedrooms or pornography, which is part of the reason why I dislike, for instance, fanservice so much.
To explain - assuming the goal of fanservice is to cause arousal, it becomes kind of a moot point, as there is little point in arousal if you cannot go the full way and if you were to go the full way, it would make the rest of whatever you’re watching pointless.

Essentially, if I want to use media for my arousal, I’ll stick with porn - simple.

However, I am not here to talk about fanservice; this is, indeed, about an exception, a single event in which I realized that my view does not apply in every situation.
As I said, I like to keep erotic things out of non-sexual areas of my life, which also include my immediate surroundings, namely my living space.

Despite the, let’s say, slightly extensive collection of works on all kinds of paraphilia at my immediate disposal, everything is safely stored away in shelves, which, on top of looking pretty damn good, has the additional benefit of allowing people to enter my room without feeling the urge to ask me what in god’s name is wrong with me (well, at least not stronger an urge than they already have). And, to return to my remark about fanservice, I don’t feel a need to spend my days in constant arousal.

To move on, this desire for a neutral space also extends to decorations, of course. Namely, tapestries, wallscrolls, figures etc. – anything that is openly displayed in my room. While I think there are great tapestries out there, there are a few that, as I feel, delve a little too far into the pornographic end of the spectrum to be openly displayed. As such, I’ve always steered clear of such works.

However! Everything changed about 1 ½ months ago. I was checking new items added to the websites of the stores I frequent for maybe the fourth or fifth time that day, when something caught my eye. It was a wallscroll by one of my favourite artists, one I had never seen at that, which was weird enough as it is.

Usually, I would have tossed it into my cart and finished the ordering process in 1 ½ minutes at most, but there was a slight problem. Though it was stunningly beautiful, depicted was a frontal nudity-shot of a character, which, as I begrudgingly decided that day, was sufficient cause for me to refrain from a purchase.

However, I could not simply move on after being presented with the chance to own such an exceptional piece of art. The thought of a purchase remained in my mind, but fortunately, the matter was settled five minutes later when the one wallscroll they had sold, giving it an uptime of perhaps 15 to 20 minutes. I convinced myself that everything was as it should be and moved on, at least until it appeared again about two weeks later, two weeks in which I had continued thinking about this one wallscroll.

However, this time, I was too late! By the time I saw it, it was already sold out, which constituted a loss for me, even though I hadn’t decided yet as to whether I would purchase it or not. Nonetheless, a few days later I finally decided. I would buy it and I would do everything in my power to obtain it.

This moment which could have only been more uplifting with an 80’s training montage, however, was followed by a good month of precisely nothing happening. Four years with no sales and then two in two weeks, I suppose it was to be expected. Fortunately, I am a patient man who takes it very, very personally to be beaten to purchases.
On December 24th, however, it happened. If I recall correctly, it was my second check during breakfast on that morning, when it appeared, probably wasn’t up for more than five minutes at that point. It wasn’t even listed yet for those who didn’t have it on their alert list, however, my decision was swift and my movement precise. Not a minute later I had bought it. I had won, my shameful loss the month before corrected, my very own miracle on Christmas Eve.

Not much later, it arrived, and, quite admittedly, seeing it here, I regret nothing. There are exceptions to some rules, and this is one of them. This is much too great an artistic work to be condemned to exclusion; probably one of the most important distinctions between regular pornography and erotica that I’ve had to make so far (though, personally, I consider everything I own works of art, to be honest).
So, what caused this headache? With this build-up, it probably cannot possibly match the expectations, but here it is:

No sunflowers by van Gogh, but I think I like this more.

By the way, I delayed this blog entry until now because I was waiting for an order confirmation for another item – another wallscroll by the same artist.

Unless I horribly missed something, the first one to be sold on Mandarake. This time around, it took surprisingly long for it to appear, I was starting to get worried, but at least I’ve got all relevant C91 releases by the circle now.

On that day, I was very glad that I have my alarm set to about an hour before I actually do get up just so I can quickly check whether anything of interest has been added already.

The thing is, most Mandarake stores start adding their items for the day around the same time I get up at about 6AM, give or take an hour or two. Because of that, I’ve made it a habit to set an additional alarm an hour earlier to do a quick check and get up to place an order if something urgent has been added – which paid off tremendously.

Anyway, with that, this little anecdote from my everyday life is concluded. Assuming you were expecting a moral of some sort, I can only advise you to never give up.

Ah, actually, because now I’ve got nothing but works by ke-ta around my library, an updated shot:

I’m happy.

By the way, feel free to discuss if there's anything of interest to you - would love some insight from other people.

Eh, I don't see how nudity alone is already considered erotica. I see myself naked every day. If I were to display a (partially) naked figure that does nothing but stand there, without any sexual undertones, then I'd display it for others to see. It's a naked person, whoopsie how bad.

But then again I also think fanservice, whilst clearly sexual in some situations, can be much more than just that. If I see naked breasts in a situation were a person literally just stands there, like your wallscroll, then I wouldn't consider it erotica in the slightest. If I look at the Venus de Milo then I am looking at art that so happens to have exposed breasts. Same with this wallscroll, just a different art style. Then again I am asexual and can't get behind the mindset of sexual people in some situations. ^^'

LeviathanX (11 months ago) #17532904I really like that new one!
Oh and it reminded me to dig in my card boxes... www.dropbox.com... <- this the only one I possess. One day I try to find the other ones... (once I have more money to spend, that is)

Ah, I remember that one, I think it's the first one by ke-ta I saw, but I had no room whatsoever left on my walls back then. It certainly is quite nice, so best of luck finding the other ones, I'm sure they'd go well together.

darkfader (11 months ago) #17380437Nice wall scrolls (really artistic) and great library!
Do you use your library much? I wish mine weren't all in plastic boxes.

Thanks! Depends on what you consider using. I use it to store Doujinshi, so while I'm adding new entries to the database, it's definitely getting a lot of active use. Outside of those times, I suppose it simply looks good with all the books stored in the shelves.

Which reminds me, you have no room for shelves?

I think it fits in nicely to the display!

Thank you! For all the headaches it's caused, I'm really glad to see that it's fitting in so well myself.

Josine (11 months ago) #17358874You have nice wall scrolls! I would love to have a few nice wall scrolls like these but I already papered my room with ordinary paper movie and anime posters :')

Thanks! When I had less room available for posters etc., I would make it a habit to swap a few out every month to rotate them, though that's obviously much easier with wallscrolls since you don't wind up wasting poster strips every few weeks.

yurirainbowz (11 months ago) #17363281where did you get the wallscroll with the two girls (pink hair and silver hair)? I love it *u*

That one was drawn by ke-ta (Pixiv, NSFW), and I ordered it from Mandarake about a year ago when it was released during C89.

Not sure if it's available anywhere else right now, though it probably can't hurt to keep an eye open as they pop up every now and then.

That's a good point, actually. Generally, that would probably depend on the person, but I think for most people it's much easier to draw the line at famous and respected artworks instead of various artworks by unknown artists; at least I assume most people would have an easier time pointing at a generic poster depicting Anime characters and claiming that it's porn, given the required genre, of course.

Nonetheless, you are quite right in assuming that, at least for some people, it's not that easy to completely disregard the sexual context. For instance, even if something were to be considered strictly artistic, on a personal basis I still wouldn't be entirely comfortable openly displaying artistic works depicting nudity, minus very few exceptions. However, that would probably depend on quite a few factors such as religion, upbringing etc., so in the end, it probably boils down to values, making it all the more refreshing (and encouraging as well) to hear opinions that differ from mine.
