Japan Post's New Export Clearance Fee

R_KasaharaR_Kasahara 8 months agoNews
First off, credit where it's due: I initially saw this news via a post TITAN_SCIENTIST made in the Mandarake thread, and most of my info comes from there: club/72/discuss.... I got an email about it today via From Japan, which is when I noticed that this won't affect just one store.

Anyway, the news is that Japan Post will add a 2,800 yen "Export Clearance Fee" to all international packages (EMS, SAL, Airmail, and Surface Mail) valued at 200,000 yen or more, starting April 1st.

It looks like this might increase shipping times for such packages, but it's not clear by how much. Given the high value threshold, this won't affect most of us, though it's worth keeping in mind if you're after a big-ticket item.

Japan Post's English-language explanation of this new fee is here: www.post.japanp...

¥200,000 = $1775 at current conversion rates, I almost got scared and thought they meant ¥20,000 which would be alot of 1/4 scale figures and big book orders from Japan but I never have single shipments that costs over ¥100,000

R_Kasahara (7 months ago) #20095383I don't think it does, since it's the package's contents that have to be valued at 200k yen or more. Given that customs declarations typically don't include the cost of shipping, you should be safe.Oh thank goodness. Thank you!

Macavy (8 months ago) #20065120So does this include the cost of shipping? I just remembered I had an Azone doll on pre-order that is being combined with some other stuff worth around 50k yen In total the result is 20k yen under 200k. I'f I have to I'll split the order, but it makes me curious because I don't see a notice about this change on AmiAmi.

While as other's have said it only likely to impact buyers of BJD (and I guess those 1/1 scale figs), it's yet again a new postal rule where no-one is explaining why it's coming into place. (Did some searching but came up with nothing beyond numerous 'this is happening'.) I'd rather have had them put out an explanation doc in Jp that we had to mangle thru google-san than an english one which basically tells us nothing.

pafy6285 (8 months ago) #19256664It's most probably a new JP Customs procedure as per the JP Post PDF document, and if you want to know the rationale, then it's best to refer to JP customs. As for the 2800 Yen again as per diagram, it seems that the sender (the stores) can directly handle the clearing process or they can use Japan post as the broker/proxy to clear it. The 2800 is most probably the fee for that. The sender (stores) might be able to handle it themselves however, this might be time consuming so I would assume that they would still ask additional fees to cover the effort/time to do that. It's kind of obvious it's a new customs procedure. It wasn't there before and it is now. I would have liked to know the "why" for a simple reason, it might just be a first step.

The 2800 yen fee isn't mentionned in the JP Post document so dunno (only saw it in FJ email), it seems like a fee to get the procedure done and if that's just FJ fees, others could charge higher, or lower and even FJ might adjust after experience of the procedure.

About this blog

I don't write blog posts here as often as I should, but at least I'm writing at all!

Posts here generally concern figures and other collectables. For reviews, I often like to highlight items which may have gone overlooked, or are otherwise interesting. In general, I strive for high-quality posts above all else.

I also maintain a blog here which is mostly about video games, and sometimes about manga and anime.
